Crochet Tutorial: Sailor Crocodile Amigurumi – Free Crochet Pattern

This sailor crocodile amigurumi is a cheerful green crocodile with a long rounded snout, raised sleepy-cute eyes, a red and white sailor cap, blue denim-style overalls, a blue and white striped sailor shirt, brown sandals, and a red crossbody bag with a tiny sailboat applique. The set also includes a white sailor hat, a small life ring, and a little crochet fish for a playful seaside display.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Using worsted weight cotton yarn and a 2.75 mm hook, the standing crocodile measures about 15.5 to 16.5 inches tall from sandals to the top of the eyes.
  • The head is intentionally oversized and tilted slightly forward, matching the cute character style in the photo.
  • The snout is long, soft, rounded, and slightly wider at the nose than at the base.
  • The sailor hat accessory measures about 4.5 inches across.
  • The life ring measures about 2 inches across.
  • The tiny fish measures about 2.25 inches long.

Skill Level

Intermediate amigurumi. A confident beginner can also complete this project by following the stitch counts carefully. The pattern uses simple stitches, but the shaping, outfit layering, and small decorative pieces require patience.

Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton or cotton-blend yarn in bright crocodile green.
  • Worsted weight yarn in light green for snout highlights and toe details, optional.
  • Worsted weight yarn in white.
  • Worsted weight yarn in royal blue.
  • Worsted weight yarn in denim blue.
  • Worsted weight yarn in red.
  • Worsted weight yarn in brown.
  • Small amount of navy yarn for sailboat base, mouth line, shirt anchor, and hat trim.
  • Small amount of black embroidery thread for smile and nostril detail.
  • Small amount of pale blue yarn for fish body.
  • Small amount of cream yarn for fish head.
  • 2.75 mm crochet hook for firm amigurumi fabric.
  • 3.25 mm crochet hook for removable clothing pieces if your tension is tight.
  • Two 14 mm black safety eyes for the raised eye whites.
  • Two small green embroidered nostril circles, or green yarn knots.
  • Two 10 to 12 mm tan wooden buttons for overall front.
  • Two tiny tan buttons for sandal straps, preferably anchor-style if available.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Long pins for positioning parts.
  • Scissors.

Gauge

Gauge is important for a firm, clean amigurumi shape. With worsted weight cotton and a 2.75 mm hook, 6 single crochet stitches should measure about 1 inch across. The fabric should be tight enough that stuffing does not show through. If holes appear, go down one hook size.

Abbreviations in US Terms

  • MR = magic ring
  • ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • inc = 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec = invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO = back loop only

  • R = round or row

Construction Notes

  • Work most body parts in continuous rounds unless the pattern says otherwise.
  • Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of every round.
  • Stuff firmly, but do not overstuff the snout. The snout should stay long and rounded, not stiff or boxy.
  • The crocodile is built from the feet upward, with separate arms, tail, snout, eyes, clothing, and accessories sewn on later.
  • The shirt is crocheted directly onto the body with alternating blue and white stripes. The overalls are layered over the shirt.
  • The sandals are made separately and sewn under the feet, then decorated with brown straps and buttons.
  • All small accessories should be sewn securely if the finished toy will be handled by children.

Long Crocodile Snout

The snout is the key feature. It should be long, rounded, and slightly wider at the nose end. Work in green and stuff gradually. Do not overstuff the center because the smile line needs to lie smoothly on the side.

  • R1: Ch 10. Starting in the second ch from hook, sc 8, 3 sc in last ch. Working on the other side of the chain, sc 7, inc in last ch. 20 sts.
  • R2: inc, sc 7, inc 3 times, sc 7, inc 2 times. 26 sts.

  • R26: sc in each st around. 26 sts.
  • Stuff the snout, making the nose end rounded and full while keeping the head-end opening slightly flat.
  • FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Nostrils

  • With darker green or black yarn, embroider two small oval nostrils on top of the snout near the nose end.
  • Place them about 5 rounds back from the front edge and about 7 stitches apart.
  • Use 3 short horizontal stitches for each nostril so they look like small raised dots.

Cheek Smile and Teeth Line

  • With black embroidery thread, stitch a curved smile on the right side of the snout, beginning near the snout side seam and curving upward toward the cheek.
  • Add one short lower curve under the smile to imitate the cute tooth line seen in the photo.
  • Use small backstitches and do not pull too tightly.

Raised Eye Whites

  • R5: sc 3, inc, repeat around. 30 sts.
  • R6-R9: sc in each st around. 30 sts.

  • R10: sc 3, dec, repeat around. 24 sts.
  • R11: sc 2, dec, repeat around. 18 sts.
  • Stuff firmly so the eye is round and raised.
  • R12: sc 1, dec, repeat around. 12 sts.
  • FO, leaving a long tail for sewing. Do not fully close the base; leave it slightly flat for attachment.

Arms

The arms are slim green tubes with simple rounded hands. They hang down at the sides, with the right arm partly hidden behind the red bag strap in the photo.

  • R1: With green, 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  • R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  • R3: sc 3, inc, repeat around. 15 sts.

  • R7: sc 3, dec, repeat around. 12 sts.
  • R8-R23: sc in each st around. 12 sts.
  • Stuff the hand and lower arm lightly. Leave the upper arm almost unstuffed so it hangs naturally.
  • Flatten the opening and sc through both layers across. 6 sts.
  • FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Back Spikes

Small green bumps run along the back and tail. They are subtle in the photo, so keep them low and rounded.

  • Make 8 small spikes.
  • R1: With green, 5 sc in MR. 5 sts.
  • R2: sc in each st around. 5 sts.
  • R3: inc in each st around. 10 sts.

  3. Sew the eyes securely around their bases.
  4. Sew the head to the body. Tilt the head forward slightly so the crocodile looks friendly and curious.
  5. Slide the striped sleeves onto the arms. Sew each sleeve top to the shoulder area if needed.
  6. Sew the arms to the body at the upper sides, just under the shoulders.
  7. Put the overall shorts on the body from the legs upward. Adjust the bib to the center front.
  8. Sew the overall bib and straps in place using denim blue yarn.
  9. Sew the tail to the back of the body before closing the back of the overalls completely.
  10. Sew the sandals under the feet, then sew the sandal straps across the toes.
  11. Sew the red crossbody bag strap diagonally across the chest. Position the bag on the lower front left side.
  12. Sew the red and white sailor cap at a tilt over the crocodile’s left eye.
  13. Add the back spikes down the head, back, and tail.
  14. Place the large sailor hat, life ring, and fish beside the crocodile as separate display accessories.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After all main pieces are attached, check the face from the front and side. The snout should sit centered, the eyes should be high and rounded, and the smile should curve gently on the side of the snout. Add a few tiny black stitches near the smile to create the sweet crocodile expression.

Shape the head with your hands after stuffing. Press lightly under the eyes and smooth the snout forward. If the snout droops too much, add two hidden stitches from the underside of the snout into the upper chest to support it.

  • Use black thread for the smile and lower mouth curve.
  • Use green or dark green yarn for the nostrils.
  • Use navy yarn for the tiny anchor on the striped shirt.
  • Keep all knots hidden inside nearby crochet stitches.
  • Trim yarn tails only after you are satisfied with the expression.

Care Notes

This amigurumi has many small handmade details, including buttons, straps, accessories, and embroidered pieces. It is best used as a decorative collectible or gentle-play plush. If making for a young child, replace buttons and safety eyes with embroidery.

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not soak the full toy unless all yarns are colorfast.
  • Gently squeeze with a towel to remove moisture.
  • Air dry flat in a shaded area.
  • Do not tumble dry, because heat may distort stuffing and shaping.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the crisp shape, store the crocodile standing or lying flat without heavy items on top. Keep the sailor cap and eye domes from being pressed for long periods. If the toy becomes flattened, gently reshape it by hand and let it rest in a dry place.

For long-term display, keep the amigurumi away from direct sunlight to protect the bright green, red, and blue yarn colors. If dust collects on the surface, use a soft dry brush and work gently around the buttons, bag strap, and embroidered anchor.

  • Store small accessories in a breathable cotton pouch when not displayed.
  • Avoid plastic bags for long storage because trapped moisture can affect the yarn.
  • Check sewn pieces occasionally and reinforce loose stitches right away.
  • Keep the toy dry before storing it in a box or cabinet.
