Crochet Tutorial: Chick and Bird Floral Wreath – Free Crochet Pattern

This cheerful crochet floral wreath features a thick brown wrapped ring, two round amigurumi birds, curling green vines, layered leaves, bright red and yellow flowers, a small hanging sign that says Flowers, and a rustic loop at the top. The larger yellow chick sits on the left with a cream spiral belly, orange beak, tiny feet, soft wings, and a little head tuft. The smaller blue bird sits beside it with matching details, making the wreath look sweet, spring-like, and handmade.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Finished wreath: about 12 in / 30.5 cm across.
  • Inner opening: about 6.5 to 7 in / 16.5 to 18 cm across.
  • Large yellow chick: about 4.25 in / 11 cm tall.
  • Small blue bird: about 3.25 in / 8.5 cm tall.
  • Oval sign: about 3.25 in / 8.5 cm wide.

The exact size will change if you use thicker or thinner yarn. For a look close to the photo, use worsted weight yarn for the wreath cover and birds, then use the same yarn for the flowers and leaves so all the pieces feel soft, chunky, and balanced.

Skill Level

Confident beginner to intermediate. The wreath uses basic amigurumi shaping, simple flat appliques, spiral rounds, sewing, and surface embroidery. Beginners can complete it slowly by making one section at a time.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in medium brown for the wreath ring and sign.
  • Worsted weight yarn in light yellow for the large chick body and yellow flowers.
  • Worsted weight yarn in cream for the large chick belly.
  • Worsted weight yarn in sky blue for the small bird body and belly.
  • Worsted weight yarn in orange for beaks, feet, and yellow flower centers.
  • Worsted weight yarn in red for the red flowers.
  • Worsted weight yarn in golden yellow for red flower centers and small flower buds.
  • Worsted weight yarn in leaf green for vines, stems, and leaves.
  • Small amount of white yarn for the word Flowers.
  • 12 in / 30.5 cm foam wreath form, round tube style.
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook for amigurumi and appliques.
  • 4 mm crochet hook for the wreath cover, if you crochet tightly.
  • 10 mm black safety eyes, 2 pieces for the yellow chick.
  • 8 mm black safety eyes, 2 pieces for the blue bird.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Sewing pins.
  • Scissors.
  • Hot glue is optional, but sewing is recommended for a softer handmade finish.
  • Jute cord or two strands of tan yarn held together for the hanging loop.

Abbreviations Used

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • inc: increase, 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible decrease over 2 stitches
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • st: stitch
  • sts: stitches
  • FO: fasten off
  • rep: repeat

Gauge

For the birds, work tightly enough that stuffing does not show through. A useful amigurumi gauge is about 6 sc and 6 rounds per 1 in / 2.5 cm using a 3.5 mm hook.

For the wreath cover, gauge is flexible because the cover wraps around a foam form. The brown fabric should stretch slightly around the wreath without large gaps. If your stitches are too loose, use a smaller hook. If the cover will not close around the foam, use a larger hook or add a few chains to the starting length.

Pattern Notes

  • This pattern uses US crochet terms.
  • Work the bird bodies in continuous spiral rounds unless instructed otherwise.
  • Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round.
  • Stuff firmly, but do not overstuff. The birds in the photo are rounded and smooth, not stretched.
  • The wreath cover is crocheted as a long ribbed rectangle, wrapped around the foam wreath, and sewn closed along the back.
  • All flowers, leaves, vines, sign, birds, and small decorations are sewn onto the front after the wreath cover is finished.
  • Leave long yarn tails on appliques when possible. These tails are used for sewing.

Wreath Cover

The wreath in the photo has a thick brown crochet texture with horizontal-looking ridges. To copy this look, make a ribbed strip in rows, wrap it around the foam ring, and seam it along the back. This gives the wreath a full, soft, rope-like appearance.

Brown Ribbed Cover

Use medium brown yarn and a 4 mm hook.

  1. Ch 22.
  2. Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. 21 sc.
  3. Row 2: Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st across. Turn. 21 sc.
  4. Rows 3 to 118: Repeat Row 2, working in BLO every row. Keep checking the strip around your wreath form. The strip should stretch around the full outside circle with a small overlap.
  5. FO, leaving a very long sewing tail.

Wrap the ribbed strip around the foam wreath form so the ridges run around the wreath. Pin the beginning and ending edges together first. Then pin the long edges together along the back side of the wreath.

Using the long brown tail, whipstitch the short ends together. Then seam the long edges closed around the back of the foam form. Keep the seam on the back so the front looks clean and rounded.

If the cover looks slightly twisted, gently rotate the fabric before finishing the seam. The front should show even brown ridges, especially across the top and bottom where the birds and flowers sit.

Large Yellow Chick

The yellow chick is the larger bird on the left side of the wreath. It has a round oval body, a cream circular belly patch, black eyes, orange beak, small orange feet, side wings, and a three-loop head tuft. The shape is cute and plump, with the belly facing forward.

Large Chick Body

Use light yellow yarn and a 3.5 mm hook.

  6. Round 6: Ch 1, sc 4, inc, rep around, sl st to first sc. 36 sts.
  7. FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

To create the visible spiral look in the photo, use the cream starting tail or a separate strand of cream yarn. Surface stitch a gentle spiral from the center outward, following the round shape. Keep the spiral soft and even, not too tight.

Sew the belly patch to the lower front of the yellow chick. The top of the patch should sit just below the beak area, and the bottom should reach close to the feet.

Large Chick Beak

Use orange yarn and a 3.5 mm hook.

  1. Round 1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. Round 2: Sc in each st around. 6 sts.
  3. Round 3: Sc 1, inc, rep around. 9 sts.
  4. Round 4: Sc in each st around. 9 sts.
  5. FO, leaving a long tail.

Flatten the beak slightly into a small oval cone. Sew it between the eyes, centered between Rounds 13 and 15. The beak should point forward, with the widest edge against the face.

Large Chick Wings

Make 2 with light yellow yarn.

  1. Round 1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.

  1. Ch 5, sl st back into the same stitch.
  2. Ch 6, sl st back into the same stitch.
  3. Ch 5, sl st back into the same stitch.
  4. FO and hide the ends inside the head.

The three small loops should stand at the top like soft feathers. Tack them lightly with one hidden stitch if they fall forward too much.

Small Blue Bird

The blue bird is smaller and sits to the right of the chick. It has the same general structure, but the body is shorter, the belly circle is blue, and the head tuft is smaller. The scale difference is important because the photo shows the yellow chick as the larger focal bird.

Small Blue Bird Body

Use sky blue yarn and a 3.5 mm hook.

  5. Round 5: Ch 1, sc 3, inc, rep around, sl st to first sc. 30 sts.
  6. FO, leaving a long sewing tail.

Surface stitch a spiral on top of the belly patch with the same blue yarn or a slightly lighter blue. Sew the patch to the lower front of the bird.

Oval Flowers Sign

The sign is a small brown oval at the top center of the wreath. It hangs from the same area as the loop and has white embroidered lettering across the front. The edge has a slightly raised border.

Brown Oval Sign

Use medium brown yarn and a 3.5 mm hook.

  1. Ch 13.
  2. Round 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 10 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Working on the other side of the chain, sc in next 10 ch, 2 sc in last ch. Sl st to first sc. 26 sts.

  6. Round 5: Ch 1, crab stitch or reverse single crochet around for a raised rim. If you do not know crab stitch, sc in each st around instead.
  7. FO, leaving a tail for sewing.

With white yarn and a yarn needle, embroider the word Flowers across the sign. Use long, smooth backstitches for the main letters and small straight stitches for curves. Keep the lettering centered and slightly playful, like the sign in the photo.

Sew the sign to the top front of the wreath, slightly overlapping the inner curve. The top of the sign should sit just below the hanging loop.

Hanging Loop

Use jute cord, thick twine, or two strands of tan yarn held together.

  1. Cut a 14 in / 35.5 cm length of cord.
  2. Fold it in half to form a loop.
  3. Thread both cut ends through the top center of the wreath from front to back.
  4. Tie a firm knot at the back.
  5. Wrap a short piece of brown yarn around the base of the loop several times to create the gathered look above the sign.
  6. Knot securely and hide the ends behind the sign.

Green Vines

The vines frame the wreath and curve naturally around the lower half and both sides. There are two main leafy vine lines in the photo: one climbing on the left side and one sweeping across the lower front toward the right side.

Main Lower Vine

Use leaf green yarn and a 3.5 mm hook.

  1. Ch 76.
  2. Starting in the 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each ch across.
  3. FO, leaving a long tail.

Pin this vine across the lower front of the wreath in a soft smile shape. It should begin around the lower left side, pass under the birds, and rise toward the lower right side.

Left Climbing Vine

Use leaf green yarn.

  1. Ch 48.
  2. Starting in the 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each ch across.
  3. FO, leaving a long tail.

Pin this vine along the left side of the wreath, beginning near the bottom left and climbing toward the red flower. Curve it gently so the leaves and flowers do not look stiff.

Right Climbing Vine

Use leaf green yarn.

  1. Ch 54.
  2. Starting in the 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each ch across.
  3. FO, leaving a long tail.

Pin this vine along the right side, beginning below the red flower and curving down toward the lower right leaves.

  2. Round 2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. Round 3: Sc in each st around. 12 sts.
  4. FO, leaving a long tail.

Lightly stuff the center or leave it flat. Sew one yellow center to the middle of each red flower. Then sew the red flowers to the wreath, one on the left side around the 9 o’clock position and one on the right side around the 3 o’clock position.

Yellow Flowers

The wreath has two yellow flowers near the upper left and upper right. Each has five soft yellow petals and an orange center. They sit near the top of the brown ring, close to the sign.

Yellow Flower Petals

Make 2 flowers with light yellow yarn.

  1. Round 1: Make 10 sc in MR. Sl st to first sc. 10 sts.
  2. Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 3, skip next st, sc in next st, rep until you have 5 ch-3 spaces. Sl st to first sc.

  2. Round 2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. Round 3: Sc in each st around. 12 sts.
  4. FO, leaving a long tail.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Sew one orange center to each yellow flower. Sew the finished yellow flowers onto the upper left and upper right sides of the wreath, slightly outside the sign area. Add small green leaves behind each flower before final sewing for a layered look.

Small Yellow Buds

The photo includes small yellow round buds on the vines. These add detail and help connect the large flowers to the leafy vine design.

Make 3 small buds with golden yellow yarn.

  1. Round 1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. Round 2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. Round 3: Sc in each st around. 12 sts.
  4. Round 4: Dec around. 6 sts.
  5. Stuff very lightly.
  6. FO, close the hole, and leave a tail for sewing.

Sew one bud near the lower left vine, one near the lower right vine, and one close to the right-side leaves. They should look like small round flower centers sitting on short stems.

Optional Green Flower Stems

Some flowers in the image appear connected by green stems. These stems can be made with simple chains and sewn under the flowers.

  1. For each stem, ch 12 to 18 depending on the distance needed.
  2. Starting in the 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each ch across.
  3. FO, leaving tails at both ends.
  4. Sew one end under the flower and the other end along the vine.

Arranging the Wreath

Before sewing everything permanently, place all pieces on the wreath and pin them. The yellow chick should sit slightly left of center, and the blue bird should sit slightly right of center. Their lower edges should touch or nearly touch the inner bottom of the wreath.

Place the sign at the top center. Add the yellow flowers to the upper left and upper right. Add the red flowers to the left and right sides. Arrange vines and leaves around the outer and inner curves so the brown wreath still shows through.

The wreath in the image feels full but not crowded. Keep the center opening visible above the birds. Let the flowers frame the top and sides, while the leaves sweep around the bottom.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Lay the covered brown wreath flat with the seam facing down.
  2. Sew the hanging loop securely at the top center.
  3. Sew the oval Flowers sign directly below the loop.
  4. Sew the main lower vine across the bottom curve.
  5. Sew the left and right climbing vines along the sides.
  6. Sew leaves along the vines, changing their angles for a natural look.
  7. Sew the yellow flowers near the top left and top right.
  8. Sew the red flowers on the left and right sides.
  9. Sew the yellow chick to the lower left inside curve of the wreath.
  10. Sew the blue bird beside it, slightly lower or equal at the base.
  11. Add the small yellow buds last to fill any open areas.

For the faces, check that both birds look forward. The eyes should sit evenly, and the beaks should be centered. If you want a glossy highlight like the photo, add one tiny white embroidery stitch on the upper side of each black eye.

Use matching yarn tails to anchor the birds strongly to the wreath. Stitch through the lower back of each bird and into the brown wreath cover several times. The birds should not swing when the wreath is lifted.

Helpful Sewing Tips

  • Use sewing pins to test placement before stitching.
  • Sew large pieces first, then smaller decorative pieces.
  • Hide knots behind flowers, leaves, and birds.
  • Use brown yarn when attaching pieces to the wreath base.
  • Use green yarn when attaching leaves and vines.
  • Use small stitches around flower centers so they stay raised and neat.

If your wreath will hang on a door, sew everything very firmly. If it will be displayed indoors on a wall, lighter stitching is fine. For a clean handmade look, avoid visible glue on the front.

Care Notes

This wreath is best used as indoor decor. Hang it on a wall, craft room door, nursery door, spring display hook, or covered porch area away from direct rain.

Because the wreath includes stuffed birds, layered flowers, and embroidered lettering, avoid machine washing. Spot clean only with a damp cloth and mild soap if needed.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The brown wreath cover is evenly wrapped and seamed on the back.
  • The hanging loop is centered above the sign.
  • The sign says Flowers and sits flat against the top of the wreath.
  • The yellow chick is larger than the blue bird.
  • Both birds have round bellies with visible spiral details.
  • The orange beaks and feet are securely sewn.
  • The red flowers have yellow centers.
  • The yellow flowers have orange centers.
  • The vines curve naturally around the lower and side areas.
  • The leaves are angled in different directions for a soft garden look.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To remove dust, gently shake the wreath or use a soft, clean makeup brush around the flowers, leaves, and bird faces. Work slowly around the embroidered sign so the white lettering stays neat.

If a small spot appears, dampen a white cloth with cool water and lightly blot the area. Do not rub hard, because rubbing can fuzz the yarn and flatten the crochet texture.

Store the wreath flat in a box when not in use. Place tissue paper around the flowers and birds so they do not press down. Keep it away from direct sunlight for long periods to help protect the red, yellow, green, and blue yarn colors.

Before displaying again, fluff the leaves and flowers gently with your fingers. Straighten the hanging loop, check the sign, and reshape the birds by lightly pressing the stuffing back into place.
