Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Finished doll height: about 13 in / 33 cm from ears to sandals when seated upright.
  • Head width: about 4.75 in / 12 cm across the cheeks.
  • Body height: about 5 in / 12.5 cm from neck to lower body.
  • Leg length: about 4.5 in / 11.5 cm including sandal and paw.
  • Cardigan length: about 4.25 in / 11 cm from shoulder to hem.

Skill Level

This is an intermediate toy knitting pattern. A confident beginner can also make it by working slowly through each small section. The doll is made mostly in stockinette stitch, with simple shaping, seaming, embroidery, and a few small decorative pieces.

Materials

  • Yarn A, medium gray: 70 yd / 64 m for head, outer ears, body, legs, and muzzle base.
  • Yarn B, dark gray: 20 yd / 18 m for inner ears and shading around the muzzle.
  • Yarn C, white: 45 yd / 41 m for paws, hands, eyebrows, beard, and mustache.
  • Yarn D, olive green: 60 yd / 55 m for the embroidered cardigan.
  • Yarn E, cream: 30 yd / 27 m for the shirt front, lower arms, and paw fronts.
  • Yarn F, tan: 35 yd / 32 m for crossbody bag, strap, and sandal soles.
  • Yarn G, brown: 18 yd / 16 m for sandal straps, bag edging, flower center, and buttons if not using real buttons.
  • Small amounts: yellow, orange, red, black, blue, pink, purple, green, and light green for sunflower, carrot, ladybugs, and cardigan embroidery.
  • Needles: US 3 / 3.25 mm double-pointed needles or a long circular needle for magic loop.
  • Needles for flat pieces: US 3 / 3.25 mm straight or circular needles.
  • Safety eyes: two 8 mm black safety eyes, or black yarn for embroidered eyes.
  • Safety nose: one 10 mm black dog nose, or black yarn for an embroidered nose.
  • Buttons: four tiny brown buttons, about 8 mm wide.
  • Stuffing: polyester fiberfill.
  • Other tools: tapestry needle, removable stitch markers, scissors, pins, row counter, and black embroidery thread.

Gauge

Gauge: 24 stitches and 32 rounds = 4 in / 10 cm in stockinette stitch using US 3 / 3.25 mm needles. Gauge is important for this doll because the cardigan, bag, paws, and sandals are all sized to fit the body. If your knitting is loose, move down one needle size so the stuffing does not show through.

Important Construction Notes

The schnauzer is built as a soft seated doll. The legs are made separately, the body is knitted from the bottom up, and the head is made as a rounded shape with a longer snout added afterward. The beard, eyebrows, and mustache are not just embroidered lines; they are built with short yarn strands and stitched down in layers to create the fluffy schnauzer look in the image.

The cardigan is knitted separately as a small open-front garment. It is placed over the finished body and lightly stitched at the shoulders and underarms so it stays neat. The bag, sandals, sunflower, and garden props are separate pieces added at the end.

Legs and White Paws

Make two. Start at the white paw and work upward into the gray leg. The paws are slightly rounded at the front so they look like the soft white feet visible inside the brown sandals.

Cream Shirt Front Panel

This panel creates the cream knitted shirt visible under the open green cardigan. The small beige pattern near the top is added with duplicate stitch after knitting.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 16 sts.
  2. Row 1, RS: k all sts.
  3. Row 2, WS: p all sts.

Using light tan yarn, add a small center pattern on rows 18-26 of the shirt panel. Duplicate stitch 2 tan V shapes, each 3 sts wide and 4 rows tall. Place them side by side so they look like the soft garden-sweater motif visible under the cardigan.

Pin the shirt panel to the front of the gray body, centered from the upper belly to the neck. Sew it down with cream yarn using small invisible stitches around the edges.

Head

The head is rounded and slightly tall, with the cheeks widening under the eyes. The snout and beard will make the lower face larger, giving the doll the classic schnauzer expression seen in the photo.

  1. With medium gray yarn, CO 10 sts and join to work in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts. 10 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in each st around. 20 sts.

  22. Rnd 35: k2tog around. 7 sts.
  23. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull closed, and secure.

Long Schnauzer Snout

The snout is made separately so it can sit forward from the face. The top is gray and the lower section is later covered with white beard strands.

  1. With medium gray yarn, CO 12 sts and join to work in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts. 12 sts.

Stuff the snout lightly. Place it on the lower front of the head, directly below and between the eyes. The top edge should begin about 2 rounds below the eyes. Sew around the snout with gray yarn, shaping it into a soft oval that points forward.

Black Nose and Mouth

  • Attach the 10 mm black safety nose at the center front of the snout, about halfway down the snout piece.
  • If embroidering the nose, use black yarn to satin stitch a rounded triangle, 5 sts wide and 4 rows tall.
  • With black embroidery thread, make one straight vertical stitch from the bottom point of the nose down 4 rows.
  • Add two tiny curved stitches at the bottom to form a gentle “Y” shaped mouth.

White Beard, Mustache, and Eyebrows

This detail gives the doll its schnauzer character. Use white yarn cut into short strands. Work slowly and trim only after all strands are attached.

Beard

  1. Cut 34 strands of white yarn, each 5 in / 12.5 cm long.
  2. Starting under the nose, use a tapestry needle to pull one strand halfway through a knitted stitch, leaving both ends equal.
  3. Make 10 strands in a row directly below the nose.
  4. Add 12 strands across the lower snout, spreading them outward toward the cheeks.
  5. Add 12 more strands along the bottom edge of the snout so the beard hangs below the face.
  6. Comb the strands gently with your fingers.
  7. Trim into a rounded beard that is longest in the center and slightly shorter at the sides.

Mustache

  1. Cut 18 strands of white yarn, each 4 in / 10 cm long.
  2. Attach 9 strands on the left side of the nose and 9 strands on the right side.
  3. Angle the strands outward and downward so the mustache sits over the beard.
  4. Take two tiny stitches with white sewing yarn at the outer edges to hold the mustache shape.

Eyebrows

  1. Cut 16 strands of white yarn, each 2.5 in / 6.5 cm long.
  2. Attach 8 strands above each eye, placing them in a curved row that angles upward toward the outside of the face.
  3. Secure the center of each strand with a tiny stitch if needed.
  4. Trim each eyebrow into a thick, feathery shape that sits over the eye without covering it completely.

Floppy Ears

Make two ears. Each ear has a gray outer piece and a darker gray inner piece. The ears fold outward and down, matching the soft floppy ears in the image.

Outer Ear

  1. With medium gray yarn, CO 14 sts.

  5. Row 19: k1, ssk, k4, k2tog, k1. 8 sts.
  6. Row 20: p all sts.
  7. BO all sts.

Place one inner ear on one outer ear with wrong sides together. Sew around the edges, leaving the cast-on edge open. Repeat for the second ear. Fold the top edge slightly forward and sew each ear to the head between Rnds 9 and 14. The ears should sit high and wide, with the tips drooping beside the face.

Arms and Cream Hands

Make two. The upper arm will be hidden inside the cardigan sleeve. The cream hand shows at the cuff, as in the image.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 8 sts and join to work in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts. 8 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in each st around. 16 sts.

Sew the arms to the sides of the body between the shoulder and upper belly. Angle the arms slightly downward so the cream hands peek below the cardigan sleeves.

Green Cardigan Body

The cardigan is worked flat from the lower back upward, with front panels and back made as one piece to the armholes. It has open fronts, ribbed edges, short sleeves, brown buttons, and embroidered flowers.

  1. With olive green yarn, CO 54 sts.
  2. Row 1, RS: k2, p2 across, ending k2.

  7. Row 31: k7, k2tog, k3. 11 sts.
  8. Rows 32-34: continue in pattern.
  9. BO all sts.

Sew shoulder seams together. Try the cardigan on the body before making sleeves. The front bands should hang open so the cream shirt remains visible.

Cardigan Sleeves

Facial Shaping

To give the face more expression, thread a long needle with gray yarn. Insert the needle at the back of the head, come out at the inner corner of one eye, go back in one stitch away, and return to the back. Pull gently to indent the eye. Repeat for the second eye. Knot securely and hide the tail inside the head.

Do not pull too tightly. The schnauzer should look soft and friendly, with rounded cheeks and a gentle garden-dog expression. The white eyebrows should sit forward enough to be visible, but they should not hide the black eyes.

Embroidery Placement Guide

  • Cardigan flowers: Place most flowers on the lower front panels, between the button band and side seam.
  • Sunflower: Place near the top of the head, slightly to one side, touching the ear base.
  • Bag carrot: Center the carrot on the bag front, with leaves pointing toward the strap.
  • Ladybugs: Place one on the outside front of each sandal, not directly on the toe.
  • Shirt motif: Keep the tan pattern near the upper shirt so it peeks out between cardigan fronts.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check that the head is firmly attached, the ears hang evenly, and the snout sits centered between the eyes. Trim the beard into a soft rounded shape, leaving the center slightly longer. Add a final tiny black stitch under the nose if the mouth needs more definition. Smooth the cardigan and secure any loose embroidered ends inside the garment.

Care Notes

This doll is best used as a decorative handmade toy. If you used safety eyes, safety nose, and small buttons, it is not suitable for children under 3 years old. For a child-safe version, embroider the eyes, nose, and buttons with yarn instead of using hard pieces.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The doll sits upright with legs angled forward.
  • The white paws are visible inside the brown sandals.
  • Each sandal has crossing straps and one ladybug.
  • The green cardigan opens at the front and shows the cream shirt.
  • The cardigan has four brown buttons and colorful flower embroidery.
  • The tan bag crosses the body and includes the orange carrot motif.
  • The snout, beard, mustache, and eyebrows create a clear schnauzer face.
  • The sunflower is attached near one ear.
  • All yarn ends are woven in securely.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Spot clean the doll with cool water and a small amount of gentle soap. Do not soak the doll, because heavy water can shift the stuffing and flatten the beard. Blot with a clean towel and let the doll air dry fully on a flat surface.

To preserve the shape, store the schnauzer away from direct sunlight and moisture. If the beard becomes flattened, gently separate the strands with your fingers and trim only the uneven tips. Keep the garden props in a small fabric pouch so the tiny hat, trowel, and watering can do not get lost.
