Knitting Tutorial: Spring Butterfly Fairy in Green Striped Dress – Free Knitting Pattern.

This sweet spring butterfly fairy is a soft knitted doll with a pale pink face, rose-pink cap, green scalloped hairline, two rounded green antennae, pink butterfly wings with green circles, a cream embroidered cardigan, and a green-and-cream striped dress. The set also includes tiny sandals, a mint shoulder bag with a daisy, a straw-style hat, a small cup, and a little garden notebook.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Main fairy doll: about 11 in / 28 cm tall from sandals to antenna tips.
  • Head: about 3.5 in / 9 cm wide.
  • Dress width at hem: about 5.25 in / 13.5 cm across when lightly flattened.
  • Wings: about 6.5 in / 16.5 cm wide across both wings.
  • Shoulder bag: about 2 in / 5 cm tall, plus strap.
  • Hat: about 3.25 in / 8 cm wide across brim.

Skill Level

This pattern is best for confident beginners to intermediate knitters. The shaping uses knit, purl, increases, decreases, short simple color changes, small seams, embroidery, and basic finishing. The doll is worked mostly in the round for a smooth toy-like finish, with some small flat pieces for the cardigan, wings, bag, and accessories.

Yarn and Materials

  • Sport weight or light DK yarn: pale blush pink for face, hands, and legs.
  • Rose pink yarn: head cap, wings, dress accent stripes, flower petals.
  • Soft leaf green yarn: dress stripes, scalloped hairline, antennae, wing circles, bag, sandal straps, leaves.
  • Cream yarn: cardigan, dress stripes, sandal soles, daisy petals.
  • Taupe or straw beige yarn: hat, cup, notebook cover, sandal outer soles.
  • Small amounts: yellow, blue, lavender, deep rose, and white embroidery yarn for flowers.
  • Needles: US 2 / 2.75 mm double-pointed needles or long circular needle for magic loop.
  • Flat knitting needles: US 2 / 2.75 mm for cardigan, wings, bag, and accessories.
  • Optional smaller needles: US 1 / 2.25 mm for tighter straps and flower details.
  • Black safety eyes: 6 mm, or black embroidery yarn if making for a young child.
  • Stuffing: washable polyester fiberfill.
  • Tapestry needle: for seaming and embroidery.
  • One tiny button: 6 mm tan or wood-look button for cardigan.
  • Stitch markers: 4 markers.
  • Blush: pink yarn, fabric-safe pastel, or a tiny amount of cosmetic blush.

Gauge

Gauge: 28 stitches and 38 rounds = 4 in / 10 cm in stockinette stitch on US 2 needles. Gauge is important because a firm fabric keeps stuffing from showing through. If your fabric looks loose, go down one needle size. If your stitches are too stiff to shape neatly, go up one needle size.

Construction Notes

The fairy is made as a soft doll with a round head, a narrow neck, a simple body, separate arms, separate legs, attached wings, a dress, a cardigan, and accessories. Work the main doll firmly and stuff gradually. The face is embroidered after the head is shaped, so you can place the features exactly like the picture.

The clothing is designed to sit on the doll permanently. The striped dress is worked from the waist down, then stitched to the body. The cardigan is worked flat in cream with a textured front band and embroidered flowers. The wings are flat oval pieces shaped in pink, then decorated with green circular patches.

Main Doll Body and Head

Head and Face Base

Using pale blush pink yarn and US 2 needles, work in the round. Stuff firmly but softly as you go. The head should be round and slightly wider than the body, with a smooth front face.

Add stuffing to the head before the neck narrows. Keep the front smooth and round. The face should look softly oval from the front, not pointed. Do not overstuff the lower face because the rose-pink cap will sit over the top and sides.

Neck and Torso

  1. Rnd 36: K1, k2tog; repeat around. 16 sts.
  2. Rnd 37: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 38: K all sts again for a short neck.
  4. Rnd 39: K1, kfb; repeat around. 24 sts.
  5. Rnd 40: K all sts.
  6. Rnd 41: K3, kfb; repeat around. 30 sts.
  7. Rnd 42: K all sts.
  8. Rnd 43: K4, kfb; repeat around. 36 sts.
  9. Rnds 44-55: K all sts for 12 rounds.
  10. Rnd 56: K4, k2tog; repeat around. 30 sts.
  11. Rnd 57: K all sts.

  13. Rnd 59: K all sts.
  14. Rnd 60: K2, k2tog; repeat around. 18 sts.

Stuff the torso firmly enough to hold the cardigan and dress shape. The body should be smaller than the head, with rounded shoulders and a gentle pear shape. Leave the lower opening live or thread the tail through the remaining stitches and draw closed after the legs are attached.

Rose-Pink Head Cap

The image shows a rose-pink knitted cap covering the top and back of the head. The front edge has a soft green scalloped trim that curves across the forehead like little garden leaves.

Pink Cap

Using rose pink yarn, work flat in stockinette stitch.

  1. CO 50 sts.
  2. Row 1, RS: K all sts.
  3. Row 2, WS: P all sts.
  4. Rows 3-18: Continue in St st.
  5. Row 19: K4, k2tog; repeat to last 2 sts, K2. 42 sts.
  6. Row 20: P all sts.
  7. Row 21: K3, k2tog; repeat to last 2 sts, K2. 34 sts.
  8. Row 22: P all sts.
  9. Row 23: K2, k2tog; repeat to last 2 sts, K2. 26 sts.
  10. Row 24: P all sts.
  11. Row 25: K1, k2tog; repeat to last 2 sts, K2. 18 sts.
  12. Row 26: P all sts.
  13. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull tight, and seam back edge.

Place the cap over the upper head. The lower front edge should sit just above the eyes and curve around both sides of the face. Stitch the cap down with small hidden stitches, leaving the lower front ready for the green trim.

Green Scalloped Hairline Trim

Using leaf green yarn and US 2 needles, CO 43 sts.

  1. Row 1: K all sts.
  2. Row 2: K2, BO 3 sts, K3, BO 3 sts, K3, BO 3 sts, K3, BO 3 sts, K3, BO 3 sts, K3, BO 3 sts, K2. When binding off sections, keep the working yarn relaxed.
  3. Row 3: Rejoin as needed and work K across the remaining sts, casting on 3 sts over each bound-off gap to create shallow scallops.
  4. Row 4: K all sts.
  5. BO all sts loosely.

Pin this trim along the front of the pink cap. Let the middle scallop dip slightly at the forehead and the side scallops rise softly toward the temples. Sew with matching green yarn. This creates the leafy curved line seen in the picture.

Antennae

Make 2. Each antenna has a narrow green stem and a rounded oval knob at the top. They lean slightly outward from the top of the head.

  1. Using leaf green yarn, CO 8 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-10: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 11: Kfb in each st around. 16 sts.
  4. Rnds 12-17: K all sts for 6 rounds.
  5. Rnd 18: K2, k2tog; repeat around. 12 sts.
  6. Rnd 19: K1, k2tog; repeat around. 8 sts.
  7. Stuff the rounded top lightly.
  8. Rnd 20: K2tog around. 4 sts.
  9. Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull closed, and weave in.

Insert a small amount of stuffing into the stem only if needed. Sew the antennae to the top of the head, about 1.25 in / 3 cm apart. Angle them outward. Stitch around the base several times so they stand upright.

Small Flowers at Antenna Bases

Make 2 flowers, one with rose petals and one with blue petals, each with a yellow center. These sit at the base of the antennae like tiny spring blossoms.

Petals

  • Using petal color, CO 3 sts.
  • Row 1: Kfb, K1, kfb. 5 sts.
  • Row 2: P all sts.
  • Row 3: K2tog, K1, ssk. 3 sts.
  • Row 4: P all sts.
  • Row 5: Slip 1, k2tog, pass slipped st over. 1 st.
  • Cut yarn and fasten off.
  • Make 5 petals for each flower.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Center

  • Using yellow yarn, CO 6 sts.
  • Work 2 rows in garter st.
  • Cut yarn, gather into a small circle, and sew to the center of the petals.

Sew one flower at the base of each antenna. Add 2 tiny green leaves beside each flower by making 3 straight embroidery stitches in leaf green.

Arms and Hands

Make 2 arms. The image shows cream cardigan sleeves covering most of the arms, with small pale pink hands peeking out.

  1. Using pale blush pink yarn, CO 10 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-4: K all sts for the hand.
  3. Change to cream yarn.
  4. Rnd 5: K all sts through the back loop to create a neat cuff line.
  5. Rnds 6-22: K all sts.
  6. Rnd 23: K3, k2tog, K3, k2tog. 8 sts.
  7. Stuff lightly.
  8. Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull closed, and weave in.

Sew the arms to the sides of the upper torso just below the neck. Angle them slightly downward so the hands rest beside the dress and cardigan, as in the picture.

Legs

Make 2. The legs are slim, pale pink, and visible below the striped skirt.

  1. Using pale blush pink yarn, CO 12 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-24: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 25: K2, k2tog; repeat around. 9 sts.
  4. Rnds 26-28: K all sts.
  5. Stuff lightly from the foot end upward.
  6. Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull closed.

For the foot shape, thread blush yarn across the bottom of each leg and pull gently to flatten the front. Sew the legs to the lower body about 0.5 in / 1.3 cm apart. They should hang straight below the skirt.

Striped Green Dress

The dress has a fitted upper section under the cardigan and a flared skirt with horizontal cream and green stripes. A narrow rose-pink accent stripe appears near the upper center, matching the head cap.

Dress Bodice

Using cream yarn, work flat from the lower chest downward.

  1. CO 32 sts.
  2. Row 1, RS: K all sts.
  3. Row 2, WS: P all sts.

  8. Rows 7-8: Work 2 rows in St st.
  9. Change to cream yarn.
  10. Rows 9-10: Work 2 rows in St st.
  11. BO loosely.

Wrap the bodice around the torso under the arms, with the seam at the back. Sew it in place. The cardigan will cover the front sides, so keep the bodice smooth and centered.

Flared Striped Skirt

Using leaf green yarn, CO 72 sts and join in the round. The skirt is worked from hem to waist.

  1. Rnd 1: P all sts for a firm lower edge.
  2. Rnd 2: K all sts.

Slide the skirt over the legs and lower body. Position the waist at the lower torso, just under the cardigan. Sew the waist edge to the body with small stitches. Let the skirt flare outward gently. Do not pull the hem tight; the pictured skirt is soft and bell-shaped.

Cream Garden Cardigan

The cardigan is short, cream colored, and open at the front. It has a small round button at the top center and floral embroidery on both front panels. The sleeves are already represented on the arms, so this cardigan body is made as a flat jacket piece and stitched around the doll.

Cardigan Body

Using cream yarn, work flat.

  1. CO 54 sts.
  2. Rows 1-4: K all sts for garter hem.
  3. Row 5, RS: K6, P42, K6.
  4. Row 6, WS: K6, K42, K6.
  5. Rows 7-16: Repeat Rows 5-6.
  6. Row 17: K6, P8, BO 8 sts for first arm opening, P14, BO 8 sts for second arm opening, P8, K6.
  7. Row 18: K6, K8, CO 8 sts over gap, K14, CO 8 sts over gap, K8, K6.
  8. Rows 19-24: Continue with K6 front bands, St st center, and K6 front bands.
  9. Row 25: K6, P2tog across center section to shape upper chest where needed, K6. Aim for 44 sts total.
  10. Rows 26-28: Work even, keeping garter bands.
  11. Rows 29-32: K all sts for neckline edging.
  12. BO loosely.

Wrap the cardigan around the shoulders with the garter bands forming the open front. Slip the arms through the arm openings. Sew only the shoulder area, underarm edges, and side edges, leaving the front open. The lower edge should sit over the top of the striped skirt.

Button and Button Loop

  • Sew one tiny tan button at the top of the right front band.
  • On the opposite band, use cream yarn to make a small loop with 6 chain-like blanket stitches.
  • The loop can be decorative or functional. Keep it small so the cardigan closes just at the neck.

Cardigan Floral Embroidery

Embroider flowers on both cardigan fronts. Keep the design vertical, like small garden stems growing up from the lower edge.

  • Use leaf green yarn to stitch 3 thin stems on each front panel.
  • Add blue flowers with 5 tiny lazy-daisy stitches around a yellow center.
  • Add one deep rose flower on each side near the lower edge.
  • Add lavender dots beside the blue flowers for the smaller blossoms.
  • Add 2 or 3 small green leaves along each stem.
  • Keep all embroidery within the front panels so the button band remains clean.

Butterfly Wings

The wings are pink, rounded, and attached behind the cardigan. Each wing has a green circular patch near the outer center. Make four wing lobes: two larger upper wings and two smaller lower wings, or make one shaped wing panel for each side.

Large Upper Wing, Make 2

Using rose pink yarn, work flat.

  1. CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.

  8. Next WS row: P all sts.
  9. Repeat until 8 sts remain.
  10. BO loosely.

Sew one large upper wing and one small lower wing together along a short inner edge to create one side. Repeat for the second side. Lightly steam or block the wings so they lie flat but remain soft.

Green Wing Circles

Make 2 green circles, one for each visible wing side.

  1. Using leaf green yarn, CO 6 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: Kfb in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: K1, kfb; repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: K2, kfb; repeat around. 24 sts.
  5. Rnd 4: K all sts.
  6. BO loosely.

Sew one circle to the center of each outer wing, matching the picture. Attach the wings to the back of the doll from shoulder to waist. The upper wings should peek out beside the head, and the lower wings should sit behind the skirt.

Sandals

The sandals have beige soles, cream trim, green straps, and tiny flowers on the sides. Make 2.

Soles

  1. Using taupe beige yarn, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: Kfb, K to last st, kfb. 10 sts.

  8. Row 20: K all sts.
  9. Row 21: SSK, K to last 2 sts, k2tog. 8 sts.
  10. BO.

Make a second sole in cream for the top layer. Sew the cream sole to the beige sole with the beige layer visible around the edge. This creates the thick handmade sandal look.

Green Strap

  • Using leaf green yarn, CO 18 sts.
  • Work 2 rows in garter st.
  • BO.
  • Place the strap across the front of the foot and sew both ends to the sole.

Side Flowers

  • Use rose pink yarn to stitch 5 tiny petal loops on one side of each sandal.
  • Add a yellow center stitch.
  • Add one small green leaf beside each flower.

Sew or tack the sandals to the feet so they remain in place. The toes should show at the front, with the strap crossing over them.

Mint Shoulder Bag with Daisy

The bag sits beside the fairy in the image and matches the green tones of the dress. It has a long shoulder strap and a white daisy with a yellow center on the front.

Bag Body

  1. Using mint green yarn, CO 18 sts.
  2. Rows 1-4: K all sts for a firm base.
  3. Rows 5-22: Work in St st.
  4. Rows 23-26: K all sts.
  5. BO.
  6. Fold the piece in half, with the garter edges at the top.
  7. Sew side seams, leaving the top open.

Bag Strap

  • Using mint green yarn, CO 55 sts.
  • Work 2 rows in garter st.
  • BO loosely.
  • Sew each end of the strap to the side seams of the bag.

Daisy Decoration

  • Using white yarn, embroider 8 long lazy-daisy petals on the front of the bag.
  • Use yellow yarn to make a small woven center.
  • Add one or two green straight stitches under the flower if desired.

Straw-Style Garden Hat

The hat is a small round straw-look accessory with a wide brim, a soft crown, a pale ribbon, and a flower decoration. It can sit beside the doll or be lightly stitched to the head for display.

Hat Crown

Using taupe beige yarn, work in the round.

  1. CO 8 sts and join.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb around. 16 sts.

  2. Rnd 16: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 17: K2, kfb; repeat around. 64 sts.
  4. Rnds 18-20: K all sts.
  5. Rnd 21: P all sts.
  6. BO loosely.

To create the straw texture, use beige yarn and make long spiral surface stitches from the crown center outward. Add a pale cream or light green ribbon by stitching a narrow band around the crown. Sew a rose-pink flower and two green leaves to one side of the brim.

Tiny Cup

The little cup is cream and beige, with a rounded bowl shape. It is a simple knitted prop for the garden tea scene.

  1. Using cream yarn, CO 18 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-2: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 3: K2, kfb; repeat around. 24 sts.
  4. Rnds 4-8: K all sts.

  6. BO loosely.
  7. For the base, using beige yarn, CO 6 sts and join.
  8. Rnd 1: Kfb around. 12 sts.
  9. Rnd 2: K1, kfb; repeat around. 18 sts.
  10. BO and sew to bottom of cup.

For the handle, CO 10 sts with cream yarn, work 2 rows in garter stitch, BO, and sew into a small curved handle on one side.

Little Garden Notebook

The notebook is a small rectangular beige accessory with a white flower on the cover. It echoes the garden theme and adds detail to the finished display.

  1. Using taupe beige yarn, CO 14 sts.
  2. Rows 1-18: K all sts for garter texture.
  3. BO.
  4. Using cream yarn, pick up and knit 14 sts along one long edge.
  5. Work 2 rows in garter st and BO to create a pale page edge.
  6. Fold very slightly so it looks like a closed booklet.

Embroider a tiny white tulip or bud on the cover with 3 white stitches. Add a short green stem and one small leaf. Keep the detail small and simple, like the picture.

Facial Features

The face is gentle and minimal. The eyes are round black beads or embroidered circles, placed wide apart. The cheeks are soft pink, and the mouth is very subtle or left invisible.

  • Place the eyes between Rnds 21 and 22 of the head, about 12 sts apart.
  • If using safety eyes, insert them before the head is fully closed. If embroidering, use black yarn and satin stitch small circles.
  • Add 3 tiny black eyelash stitches beside each eye, angled outward.
  • For cheeks, lightly brush pink blush below each eye, or embroider 4 soft horizontal stitches with pale rose yarn.
  • Optional mouth: use one tiny pale rose stitch at the center lower face, but keep it very small.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Check that the head is round and the body is centered before sewing accessories in place.
  2. Sew the green scalloped trim firmly along the cap edge.
  3. Attach antennae securely and add flowers at their bases.
  4. Sew the arms under the cardigan shoulder line so the cream sleeves look natural.
  5. Attach the wings to the back after the cardigan is positioned.
  6. Sew the skirt waist to the body, keeping the stripes level around the doll.
  7. Add the sandals last so both feet sit evenly.
  8. Place the bag, hat, cup, and notebook beside the fairy for a full garden display.

When shaping the face, use pins first to test eye placement. The fairy in the picture has a calm, sweet expression, so avoid placing the eyes too close together. A little blush under each eye gives the same soft handmade look.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not soak if safety eyes, buttons, or blush powder are used.
  • Press water out gently with a towel. Do not twist the doll.
  • Reshape the wings, skirt, antennae, and hat while damp.
  • Dry flat in a shaded place with good airflow.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The pink cap is centered and the green scalloped trim curves evenly across the forehead.
  • Both antennae stand upright and lean slightly outward.
  • The flowers at the antenna bases are secure.
  • The cardigan opens neatly at the front and has one small button at the neckline.
  • The embroidery on both cardigan fronts is balanced.
  • The striped skirt flares softly and sits under the cardigan.
  • The wings are even, with green circles placed at matching heights.
  • The sandals show beige soles, cream edging, green straps, and tiny side flowers.
  • The bag has a long strap and a white daisy on the front.
  • The hat, cup, and notebook complete the spring garden scene.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the fairy away from direct sunlight to protect the soft pink, cream, and green yarn colors. If the doll is displayed on a shelf, gently dust it with a clean dry brush. Keep the antennae and wings supported so they do not bend during storage.

For long-term preservation, wrap the doll loosely in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton cloth. Do not compress the wings, hat, or flower details. If the skirt loses shape, lightly mist it with water, smooth the stripes with your fingers, and let it dry flat.

If giving this project as a keepsake, use embroidered eyes instead of plastic safety eyes for extra softness. Check the button, flowers, bag strap, and sandals regularly if the fairy will be handled often. Small details make this design charming, so secure every embellishment with several neat stitches.
