Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

The finished cat measures about 10 in tall from the bottom of the boots to the top of the ears when made with DK yarn and 2.75 mm needles. The head is intentionally large and rounded, the body is short and soft, and the legs are slightly chunky to match the photographed woodland doll style.

  • Cat height: about 10 in tall.
  • Head width: about 4 in across after stuffing.
  • Sweater width: about 4.25 in across the chest when laid flat.
  • Skill level: confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Construction: small pieces knitted mostly in the round, then stuffed and sewn together.

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in black for the cat head, body, ears, upper legs, and tail.
  • DK weight yarn in white for paws, tail tip, mushroom stems, and small white details.
  • DK weight yarn in deep forest green for the sweater.
  • DK weight yarn in cream or oatmeal for the sweater motifs, pants stripes, bag, and hat.
  • DK weight yarn in olive green for pants stripes and leaf embroidery.
  • DK weight yarn in rust brown and chestnut brown for mushroom caps, boots, acorns, and sweater motifs.
  • Small amount of pink yarn or embroidery floss for the heart-shaped nose and mouth line.
  • Small amount of yellow yarn, yellow felt, or two 18 mm yellow cat safety eyes with black pupils.
  • White embroidery thread, thin cotton, or nylon whisker thread.
  • Two tiny tan buttons for the boots.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • 2.75 mm double-pointed needles or circular needles for magic loop.
  • 2.5 mm needles for firm cuffs and small accessories.
  • Tapestry needle, stitch markers, pins, scissors, and a row counter.

Gauge

Work tightly so the stuffing does not show through the fabric. The toy in the photo has compact stitches with a smooth stockinette surface, so do not use loose tension. If your fabric looks open, go down a needle size before beginning the main cat pieces.

  • Gauge in stockinette: 28 sts and 38 rounds equal 4 in.
  • Gauge for small colorwork: 30 sts and 40 rounds equal 4 in.
  • Recommended needle: 2.75 mm for the cat and clothes.
  • Smaller detail needle: 2.5 mm for acorn, bag strap, boot straps, and hat ribbing.

Important Construction Notes

This cat is built as a soft doll with separate knitted clothes. The base cat uses black yarn for the head, body, ears, and tail. The sweater and pants are made separately, then dressed onto the body before final arm placement. This gives the outfit the layered look shown in the photo.

Stuff the head firmly, because the large round face needs structure. Stuff the body and limbs moderately so the cat can sit flat on the wooden surface style shown in the image. Overstuffing the legs can make the pants and boots difficult to fit.

  • Join rounds without twisting when knitting in the round.
  • Use a removable marker to mark the center front of the face and body.
  • Keep all yarn tails long enough for seaming.
  • For a child-safe version, embroider the eyes instead of using plastic safety eyes or buttons.
  • When working colorwork, keep floats relaxed so the sweater does not pucker.

Black Cat Body and Legs

The lower body is knitted from two separate legs joined at the crotch. These legs are mostly hidden by the striped pants and boots, but the black ankles must show slightly above the boots, just like the image. Knit both legs firmly and stuff them before joining.

Round Black Cat Head

The head is the largest visual feature of this doll. It should be round, smooth, and slightly wider than the body. The ears sit high on the head at a gentle outward angle. The eyes are placed wide apart to create the cute woodland cat expression.

  20. Rnd 34: K2tog around. 8 sts.
  21. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull closed, and weave in securely.

Pointed Cat Ears

The ears are triangular, black, and slightly thick. They are not floppy; they stand upright with a small outward tilt. For the most accurate look, make each ear from two knitted triangles sewn together, then lightly stuff only the lower half.

Make Four Ear Triangles

  1. With color A and 2.75 mm needles, CO 18 sts.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: P all sts.

White Paws and Green Sleeves

The arms show white rounded paws at the ends and green sweater sleeves above them. The sleeve should look like it belongs to the mushroom sweater, so use the same forest green yarn and add small rust and cream stitches after knitting.

  1. With color B, CO 8 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts. 8 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in every st around. 16 sts.

  12. Rnds 18-22: K all sts in color C.
  13. Rnd 23: K7, k2tog, repeat once more. 16 sts.
  14. Rnds 24-26: K all sts.
  15. Stuff the paw and sleeve lightly.
  16. BO all sts, leaving a long tail for sewing.
  17. Make a second arm the same.

Black Tail With White Tip

The tail sits behind the body on the right side when viewed from the front. It curves gently outward and has a bright white tip. Do not stuff the tail too firmly; a softly stuffed tail is easier to curve into the same relaxed shape as the photo.

  1. With color B, CO 8 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in every st around. 16 sts.

Mushroom Fair Isle Sweater

The sweater is the main clothing piece. It is deep green with cream borders, rust mushroom caps, white stems, and small woodland flecks. The body is worked in the round with arm openings. The sleeves are already made as part of the arms, so this sweater is a fitted vest-style top with visible sleeve join lines.

Sweater Body

  1. With color C and 2.75 mm needles, CO 66 sts. Join in the round and PM at center back.
  2. Rnds 1-4: K1, P1 rib around.
  3. Rnd 5: K all sts in color C.
  4. Rnd 6: K1 color D, K2 color C, repeat around.
  5. Rnd 7: K all sts in color C.
  6. Rnd 8: K2 color E, K1 color D, K8 color C, repeat 6 times.
  7. Rnd 9: K all sts in color C.

Large Mushroom Motif Over 11 Stitches

Work the following 11-st repeat 6 times around the sweater. Carry the unused yarn loosely behind the work. If a float is longer than 5 sts, catch it behind the center stitch so the inside remains neat.

  1. Rnd 10: For each repeat, K5 color C, K1 color B, K5 color C.
  2. Rnd 11: For each repeat, K4 color C, K3 color B, K4 color C.
  3. Rnd 12: For each repeat, K4 color C, K3 color B, K4 color C.
  4. Rnd 13: For each repeat, K4 color C, K3 color B, K4 color C.

  6. Rnd 15: For each repeat, K2 color C, K7 color F, K2 color C.
  7. Rnd 16: For each repeat, K2 color C, K7 color F, K2 color C.
  8. Rnd 17: For each repeat, K3 color C, K5 color F, K3 color C.
  9. Rnd 18: K all sts in color C.
  10. Rnd 19: K1 color D, K1 color C, K1 color E, K8 color C, repeat 6 times.
  11. Rnd 20: K all sts in color C.

After the sweater is finished, add tiny white duplicate-stitch dots on each rust mushroom cap. Place three dots on each large cap: one near the left top, one at center, and one near the right lower side. This creates the spotted mushroom look from the photo.

Arm Openings and Neck

  1. Rnd 21: K13, BO 8 sts for first armhole, K24, BO 8 sts for second armhole, K13. 50 live sts remain.
  2. Rnd 22: K13, CO 8 sts over first armhole, K24, CO 8 sts over second armhole, K13. 66 sts.
  3. Rnds 23-25: K all sts in color C.

  7. Rnd 29: K all sts in color C.
  8. Rnd 30: K8, k2tog, repeat around. 54 sts.
  9. Rnd 31: K all sts in color C.
  10. Rnds 32-36: K1, P1 rib in color C for the high neck.
  11. BO loosely in rib.

Block the sweater lightly with steam held above the fabric, not pressed onto it. Slide the sweater over the body before attaching the arms, then pull the arm openings into position at each side. The lower hem should sit just above the striped pants.

Facial Features

The face is simple but very expressive. The eyes are large, round, yellow, and placed wide apart. The nose is a small pink heart shape with one short vertical mouth stitch. The whiskers are thin, bright, and extend outward across the black face.

  1. Mark the center front of the head. The eyes sit between Rnds 16 and 17 of the head.
  2. Place the eyes about 10 sts apart, measuring from the inner edge of one eye to the inner edge of the other.
  3. If using 18 mm yellow safety eyes, insert them before the head is fully closed. Make sure the washers are secure.
  4. If making knitted or felt eyes, sew two yellow circles in place, then add smaller black circles or black embroidery pupils.
  5. With pink yarn, embroider a heart-shaped nose centered 3 rounds below the eyes.
  6. Use one vertical pink stitch below the nose for the small mouth line.
  7. Cut six white whisker strands, each about 4 in long.
  8. Thread three whiskers through each cheek, about 2 rounds below the eyes. Knot inside or secure with tiny stitches.
  9. Trim whiskers evenly so they extend about 1.5 in from each side of the face.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Dress the body in the striped pants first, then slide the mushroom sweater over the torso. Sew the head to the body with the face centered over the sweater front. Use small ladder stitches around the neck twice so the large head stays stable.

  1. Sew the ears to the head at a slight outward angle.
  2. Sew the acorn accessory between the ears, slightly toward the cat’s right side.
  3. Sew the arms to the side body through the sweater armholes, with white paws pointing downward.
  4. Sew the tail to the back right side of the body, curving it outward so the white tip is visible.
  5. Slip the boots onto the feet and tack them in place with hidden stitches.
  6. Position the bag strap diagonally over the sweater and tack the strap near the shoulder and side hip.

Care Notes

This knitted cat is best used as a decorative handmade doll. Because it includes small eyes, buttons, embroidery, and loose whiskers, keep it away from babies, pets, and children who may pull at small parts. For a child-safe version, embroider all features securely and skip buttons.

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if using safety eyes, buttons, or pom-poms.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Dry flat on a towel, reshaping the head, ears, sweater, and tail while damp.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • There are three white whiskers on each side.
  • The green sweater has rust mushroom caps and white stems across the front.
  • The striped pants show below the sweater hem.
  • The brown boots have straps, black lace marks, and tiny side buttons.
  • The cream bag crosses the chest diagonally and includes leaf embroidery.
  • The black tail has a white tip and is visible on one side.
  • The acorn sits securely on top of the head.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, store the cat upright or lying flat with the ears protected. Avoid compressing the head, tail, bag, or hat under heavy objects. If dust collects on the black yarn, gently lift it away with a soft lint brush or a clean dry cloth.

For long-term display, keep the doll away from direct sunlight so the green sweater, rust mushrooms, and yellow eyes stay bright. If the whiskers bend, smooth them gently between your fingers. Do not pull them, because thin whisker strands can loosen from the face.

If the sweater or pants shift over time, adjust them by hand and add one or two hidden stitches at the side seams. This keeps the outfit looking tidy while still preserving the layered handmade appearance of the black woodland cat in its mushroom sweater.
