Knitting Tutorial: White Bull Terrier in Denim Garden Overalls – Free Knitting Pattern.

This friendly knit bull terrier has a soft white body, upright pink-lined ears, a gray eye patch, a sweet pink nose and tongue, red garden boots, denim short overalls with stitched red details, a pale blue cardigan with tiny white cloud motifs, a flower crown, a woven shoulder bag full of fruit, a straw sun hat with a bee, a picnic blanket, and a tiny cupcake.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size and Construction Style

The finished bull terrier is about 13 inches tall from the bottom of the red boots to the tips of the ears when made with DK weight yarn and firm stuffing. The toy is knitted mostly in the round, with small flat pieces added for clothing, facial features, flowers, picnic props, and decorative stitching.

The body is built from two booted legs joined into a rounded torso. The head is worked separately with shaping that gives the long bull terrier face, soft cheeks, and high upright ears. The cardigan, overalls, satchel, hat, blanket, fruit, bee, and cupcake are made as removable-style decorative pieces, though you may tack them in place for display.

Materials

  • Yarn weight: DK or light worsted yarn. Use smooth wool or acrylic for clear stitches, and a slightly fuzzy wool blend if you want the soft plush look shown in the image.
  • Main color: Warm white, about 110 yd.
  • Denim overalls: Medium denim blue, about 70 yd.
  • Cardigan: Pale sky blue, about 55 yd.
  • Boots: Bright red, about 30 yd.
  • Boot soles and satchel: Tan or straw beige, about 45 yd.
  • Ear lining, nose, tongue, cupcake frosting: Soft pink, about 25 yd total.
  • Eye patch: Charcoal gray, about 12 yd.
  • Small decorations: Yellow, black, green, raspberry red, white, lilac, peach, pale yellow, and light blue scraps.
  • Needles: US 3 / 3.25 mm double-pointed needles or circular needles for magic loop.
  • Flat pieces: US 3 / 3.25 mm straight or circular needles.
  • Stuffing: Polyester fiberfill.
  • Eyes: Two 6 mm black safety eyes, or black yarn for embroidery.
  • Notions: Tapestry needle, removable stitch markers, small buttons, sewing pins, row counter, scissors.

Gauge

Gauge: 6 stitches and 8 rows = 1 inch in stockinette stitch on US 3 needles. Exact gauge is less important than firm fabric. The stuffing should not show through. If your stitches look loose, use a smaller needle.

Keep the knitting firm for the head, body, legs, arms, boots, fruit, and cupcake. The cardigan and overalls can be slightly softer, but they should still hold their shape neatly on the toy.

Helpful Notes Before You Start

Use a long yarn tail on every small piece so you can sew it in place cleanly. Stuff the head and body firmly but gradually. The bull terrier shape depends on a smooth oval head, a defined long muzzle, rounded cheeks, and a slightly proud upright posture.

For the image-accurate look, place the cardigan over the denim overalls, keep the red boots bright and rounded, add red topstitching to the overalls, and sew the shoulder bag strap diagonally from the left shoulder to the right hip.

Muzzle Shaping

Thread a long white yarn tail onto a tapestry needle. Insert at the lower back of the head and come out at the front center, about 8 rounds above the closing point. Pull gently to create the long downward bull terrier nose bridge. Stitch from the front center to each cheek twice, pulling just enough to form rounded jowls.

Make a shallow vertical groove below the nose by taking two small tightening stitches from the nose point down toward the mouth. Do not pull too tightly. The face should stay soft, with a rounded white muzzle and a calm, friendly expression.

Pink Nose

  1. With pink yarn, CO 6 sts and work flat.
  2. Row 1: p all sts.
  3. Row 2: kfb, k4, kfb. 8 sts.
  4. Row 3: p all sts.
  5. Row 4: kfb, k6, kfb. 10 sts.
  6. Row 5: p all sts.
  7. Row 6: k2tog, k6, ssk. 8 sts.
  8. Row 7: p all sts.
  9. Row 8: k2tog, k4, ssk. 6 sts.
  10. BO, leaving a long tail.

Sew the nose to the front tip of the muzzle. Use small stitches around the edge, then embroider 3 short vertical pink lines downward from the lower center of the nose to match the soft triangular nose in the image.

Open Pink Tongue

  1. With pink yarn, CO 8 sts.
  2. Rows 1-5: work in st st, beginning with a knit row.
  3. Row 6: k2tog, k4, ssk. 6 sts.

  5. Row 8: k2tog, k2, ssk. 4 sts.
  6. Row 9: p all sts.

Gray Eye Patch

  1. With charcoal gray yarn, CO 6 sts.
  2. Row 1: p all sts.
  3. Row 2: kfb, k4, kfb. 8 sts.

  10. Row 12: k2tog, k6, ssk. 8 sts.
  11. Row 13: p2tog, p4, p2tog. 6 sts.
  12. BO loosely.

Sew the patch on the dog’s right side of the face, angled slightly from the top toward the cheek. The patch should cover the eye area and sit close to the top of the muzzle, just like the image.

Eyes

  • Place one black eye through the gray patch before fully sewing the patch down, or embroider a glossy black oval with black yarn.

Facial Embroidery and Expression

  • Use white yarn to shape the cheeks with two small tightening stitches from the lower muzzle to the sides of the face.
  • Use pink yarn to add a short mouth line above the tongue.
  • Use black yarn to outline the lower edge of the gray patch only if your patch blends too softly into the face.
  • Do not over-tighten the face. The image has a soft, handmade expression, not a sharp sculpted look.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Sew the head securely to the white neck. Angle the head slightly forward so the dog appears friendly and seated.
  2. Attach the ears high and symmetrical. The inner pink sections should face forward.
  3. Sew the arms to the shoulders with the cardigan sleeves facing outward.
  4. Fit the overalls around the body. Sew the shorts and bib in place, then attach straps and buttons.
  5. Place the cardigan over the shoulders. Tack only at the neckline, side seams, and sleeve tops so the front stays open.
  6. Sew on the nose, tongue, eye patch, eyes, and flower crown.
  7. Add the satchel strap diagonally across the chest and secure the bag at the right hip.
  8. Arrange the picnic blanket, hat, bee, and cupcake beside the toy for the full garden picnic scene.

Care Notes

Spot clean the finished toy with cool water and a small amount of mild soap. Blot gently with a towel and let the piece air dry completely. Avoid soaking if you used buttons, safety eyes, or glued decorations.

Keep the toy away from rough play if it includes small stitched flowers, buttons, fruit, or the bee. For a child-safe version, embroider all eyes and buttons instead of using plastic or separate hard pieces.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The white head is smooth, oval, and slightly long through the muzzle.
  • The pink nose sits at the rounded front tip of the face.
  • The gray eye patch is on one side and holds one black eye.
  • The ears stand tall with pink centers showing.
  • The denim overalls have red stitch details, straps, bib, and small buttons.
  • The pale blue cardigan is open and decorated with small white clouds.
  • The red boots are rounded, bright, and finished with tan soles.
  • The flower crown sits between the ears without covering them.
  • The tan shoulder bag hangs diagonally and contains colorful fruit.
  • The straw hat, bee, picnic blanket, and cupcake complete the garden scene.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, support the head and body while cleaning. Never wring the toy. Press moisture out gently between towels and reshape the ears, muzzle, boots, cardigan, and overalls while damp.

Store the bull terrier upright or lying flat in a clean fabric bag. Keep the flower crown, hat, cupcake, and blanket away from direct sunlight for long periods so the colors stay bright. Add a small paper label with yarn information if the piece is a gift.

For long-term display, lightly brush the white yarn with clean fingers to keep the surface soft. Check the stitched fruit, bag strap, bee wings, and cardigan decorations occasionally, and secure any loose ends with a tapestry needle.
