Knitting Tutorial: Tabby Cat in Floral Brown Overalls – Free Knitting Pattern.

This sweet knitted tabby cat is dressed exactly like a little garden friend, with a round striped face, large glossy eyes, a blue-and-cream striped sweater, floral brown overalls, blue sandals, a tiny bee crossbody bag, and a white daisy hair clip. The finished scene also includes a yellow sun hat, a woven picnic basket, and a small garden mat for a cozy handmade display.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Main cat doll: about 12 in / 30 cm tall from feet to ear tips when worked with DK yarn and 2.75 mm needles.
  • Head width: about 4.75 in / 12 cm across the cheeks after stuffing.
  • Body in overalls: about 6 in / 15 cm from neck to feet.
  • Sun hat: about 5 in / 12.5 cm wide across the brim.
  • Picnic basket: about 3.25 in / 8 cm wide.
  • Crossbody bag: about 1.75 in / 4.5 cm wide, with a knitted bee patch.

Yarn and Materials

  • DK weight yarn: warm tabby brown, dark chocolate brown, cream, white, denim blue, sky blue, tan, golden yellow, red, pink, green, black, and small amounts of yellow for flower centers.
  • Needles: 2.75 mm double-pointed needles for the doll and clothing details; 3.25 mm needles for the soft accessories if you want them slightly drapier.
  • Safety eyes: two 14 mm glossy black eyes. Use embroidered eyes instead for a child under 3 years old.
  • Stuffing: polyester fiberfill, packed firmly in the head and body, lightly in ears and accessories.
  • Buttons: two tiny brown buttons for the overall straps.
  • Other tools: tapestry needle, stitch markers, removable markers, embroidery needle, black sewing thread, pins, scissors, and optional thin white nylon thread for whiskers.

Gauge

For a firm toy fabric, work at a tight gauge of about 28 stitches and 38 rounds over 4 in / 10 cm in stockinette stitch on 2.75 mm needles. A tight gauge keeps stuffing from showing through and helps the face stay smooth and rounded.

The image shows a smooth knitted surface with clear V-shaped stitches, so avoid loose tension. If your fabric stretches open when stuffed, go down one needle size. If the doll becomes stiff and difficult to shape, go up one needle size.

Construction Notes

The cat is knitted mostly in the round for a smooth plush shape. The head, body, legs, arms, ears, tail, clothes, sandals, bag, hat, basket, and mat are made separately, then assembled. The tabby markings are created with duplicate stitch and embroidery so the face can stay soft and balanced.

The body underneath the clothing is knitted in tabby brown. The sweater is made as a striped upper-body layer with sleeves. The brown floral overalls are knitted as a separate garment and sewn over the body, matching the raised bib, wide legs, shoulder straps, buttons, and tiny red-and-yellow flower embroidery shown in the image.

Main Head

Use warm tabby brown yarn and 2.75 mm double-pointed needles. Work in the round. Place a marker at the beginning of the round. Stuff firmly as you work, especially in the cheeks and forehead, so the head becomes round and slightly wider than the body.

  1. Rnd 1: CO 8 sts and join in the round. Knit 1 round.

Pause before closing. Insert safety eyes between Rnds 25 and 26, about 12 sts apart. The eyes should sit low and wide, giving the cat the same round, curious expression as the image. Add stuffing until the face is full but not stretched.

  1. Rnd 41: k1, k2tog, repeat around. 16 sts.
  2. Rnd 42: k2tog around. 8 sts.
  3. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull tight, and secure.

Cream Muzzle Patch

The muzzle is a soft cream oval split into two puffy cheeks below the nose. Work flat in cream yarn. Make two matching cheek pads.

  1. Row 1: CO 6 sts.
  2. Row 2: purl.
  3. Row 3: kfb, k4, kfb. 8 sts.
  4. Row 4: purl.
  5. Row 5: kfb, k6, kfb. 10 sts.
  6. Rows 6-10: work stockinette stitch, beginning with a purl row.
  7. Row 11: ssk, k6, k2tog. 8 sts.
  8. Row 12: purl.
  9. Row 13: ssk, k4, k2tog. 6 sts.
  10. BO all sts, leaving a long sewing tail.

Pin the two cream cheek pads side by side under the eyes, with their inner edges touching at the center. Sew around the edges using small stitches. Add a tiny amount of stuffing under each cheek before closing the final inch, so the muzzle appears gently raised.

Inner Eye Cream Patches

The image shows narrow cream teardrop patches rising from the inner corners of both eyes. Make two small pieces in cream yarn.

  1. Row 1: CO 4 sts.
  2. Row 2: purl.
  3. Row 3: kfb, k2, kfb. 6 sts.
  4. Row 4: purl.
  5. Row 5: k1, ssk, k1, k2tog. 4 sts.
  6. Row 6: purl.
  7. Row 7: ssk, k2tog. 2 sts.
  8. Row 8: p2tog. 1 st.
  9. Fasten off.

Sew one cream patch above each muzzle side, angled upward toward the forehead. Keep the lower point close to the eye and the upper point narrow. This small shaping is important because it gives the tabby face the bright, alert look shown in the photo.

Tabby Face Markings

Use dark chocolate brown yarn and duplicate stitch. The forehead has a bold central tabby “M” and several narrow vertical stripes. The cheeks and sides of the face have darker curved marks. Work slowly and mirror the markings on both sides.

  • Forehead center stripe: duplicate stitch a dark line from Rnd 13 down to Rnd 22 over the center front, 1 stitch wide.
  • Tabby M shape: starting about 4 sts left of center on Rnd 15, embroider a slanted line down to center Rnd 21, then up to 4 sts right of center Rnd 15. Add two smaller outer slants to form a soft M.
  • Side forehead stripes: add two dark V-shaped stripes on each side of the central stripe, each about 5 rows long.
  • Cheek stripes: embroider three short curved lines on each cheek, beginning near the outer eye and sweeping backward toward the side of the head.
  • Eye outline: use dark brown thread to backstitch a thin line around each eye, leaving the cream patches visible.

Nose, Mouth, Whisker Dots, and Whiskers

With dark brown yarn, embroider a small triangular nose centered where the two cream cheek pads meet. Make the triangle about 4 stitches wide and 3 rows tall. Satin stitch until the nose looks smooth and slightly raised.

  • From the bottom point of the nose, stitch one straight dark line downward for 3 rows.
  • Make a small curved smile to the left and a matching curve to the right.
  • Add three tiny dark whisker dots on each cream cheek using small French knots or short vertical stitches.
  • For fine whiskers, thread three strands of thin white nylon or white embroidery thread through each cheek and trim evenly.

Ears

Make two outer ears in warm tabby brown and two inner ears in pale cream with a little pink or tan embroidery. The ears are triangular with rounded edges and sit high on the head, tilted slightly outward.

Outer Ear, Make 2

  1. Row 1: CO 18 sts in tabby brown.
  2. Rows 2-4: stockinette stitch, beginning with a purl row.
  3. Row 5: ssk, k14, k2tog. 16 sts.
  4. Row 6: purl.
  5. Row 7: ssk, k12, k2tog. 14 sts.
  6. Row 8: purl.
  7. Row 9: ssk, k10, k2tog. 12 sts.
  8. Row 10: purl.

Sew each inner ear onto an outer ear. Embroider three short tan lines inside each ear from the base toward the tip. Fold the base of each ear slightly inward and sew to the head between Rnds 9 and 18. The ears should angle outward like the photo, not stand straight up.

Body

The body is smaller than the head, with a rounded belly hidden under the overalls. Work in tabby brown. The neck is narrow, the tummy is softly full, and the lower body tapers into the legs.

  1. Rnd 1: CO 12 sts and join in the round.

  18. Rnd 37: k2, k2tog, repeat around. 24 sts.
  19. Rnds 38-40: knit even to form the neck.
  20. BO loosely, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Stuff the body firmly, with more fullness in the belly and less at the neck. Sew the body to the underside of the head, making sure the face is centered above the chest.

Legs and Feet

Make two legs in tabby brown. The feet are rounded and visible inside the blue sandals, with stitched toe lines on the front.

  1. Rnd 1: CO 10 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 2: kfb around. 20 sts.

  10. Rnd 26: k3, k2tog, repeat around. 16 sts.
  11. Rnd 27: knit.
  12. BO, leaving a long tail.

Stuff each leg. Flatten the top slightly and sew the legs under the body, about 6 sts apart at the inner thighs. Use dark brown yarn to embroider four short vertical toe lines across the front of each foot.

Arms

The arms are narrow, with tabby paws showing below the sweater sleeves. Make two.

  1. Rnd 1: CO 8 sts in tabby brown and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 2: kfb around. 16 sts.
  3. Rnds 3-8: knit even.

  11. BO, leaving a long tail.

Stuff the paws lightly and the sleeves only slightly. Sew the arms to the sides of the body just under the head. Angle them downward so they rest naturally beside the overalls.

Tail

The tail is mostly hidden behind the clothing, but a small striped tabby tail helps the doll look complete from the back.

  1. Rnd 1: CO 8 sts in tabby brown and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 2: kfb around. 16 sts.
  3. Rnds 3-5: knit in tabby brown.

  8. Rnd 23: k2tog around. 8 sts.
  9. Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull tight, and secure.

Stuff lightly. Sew the tail to the back lower body before adding the overalls, allowing the tip to curve slightly to one side.

Striped Sweater Body Layer

The sweater is fitted under the overalls. It has a blue collar, cream-and-blue horizontal stripes, and sleeves already worked into the arms. This layer creates the striped chest seen above the brown bib.

  1. With denim blue, CO 52 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-4: k1, p1 rib around for the neckband.
  3. Rnd 5: switch to cream and knit.

Slide this sweater tube over the body before attaching the arms if preferred, or seam it at the back if the head is already attached. Position the ribbed blue collar at the base of the neck and the striped section behind the overall bib.

Brown Floral Overalls

The overalls are the main clothing feature. They are warm brown with loose rounded legs, a center bib, shoulder straps, two tiny buttons, and many embroidered red and yellow flowers with green stems. Work the pants section in the round from the waist down, then knit the bib and straps flat.

Overall Pants

  1. With brown yarn, CO 56 sts and join in the round.

  2. Row 1: k1, p1 across.
  3. Repeat Row 1 until strap measures about 5.5 in / 14 cm.
  4. BO in rib.

Sew each strap to the back waistband, cross or angle it over the shoulder, and bring it to the front bib. Sew a tiny brown button at each front strap end. The straps should sit over the striped sweater and frame the bib.

Flower Embroidery on Overalls

The image shows scattered tiny flowers on the bib and legs. Use green for stems, red and yellow for tulip-like flowers, and a few tiny pink blossoms near the sleeve cuffs.

  • Bib flowers: embroider three small stems on the bib, each 4 rows tall. Add one red flower, one yellow flower, and one pink flower.
  • Left overall leg: embroider three red flowers spaced vertically, each with two green leaves.
  • Right overall leg: embroider two red flowers and one yellow flower, keeping them slightly uneven for a natural garden look.
  • Side accents: add one small red flower on each outer hip.
  • Stitch method: use straight stitches for stems, two tiny diagonal stitches for leaves, and three short satin stitches for each flower head.

  3. Sew arms to the upper sides and legs to the lower body. Check that the doll can sit upright.
  4. Dress the body in the striped sweater layer and floral brown overalls. Secure the bib and straps with the small buttons.
  5. Place the blue sandals over the feet and sew them invisibly at the sole edges.
  6. Add the crossbody bag diagonally across the chest, with the bee patch facing front.
  7. Finish the tabby stripes, cheek stripes, nose, mouth, whisker dots, and fine whiskers after the head is fully stuffed and assembled.

The face is the most important finishing area. Take time to balance the eyes, muzzle, stripes, and whiskers. Small changes in stitch placement can change the expression, so pin or lightly mark the embroidery before making permanent stitches.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean the doll with a damp cloth and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if you used safety eyes, buttons, or delicate embroidered flowers.
  • Reshape the head, ears, and overalls gently while damp.
  • Let the doll air dry completely before storing or displaying.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The tabby forehead has a clear dark M marking and center stripe.
  • The cream muzzle is raised and symmetrical.
  • The blue-and-cream sweater stripes are visible above the brown bib and on both sleeves.
  • The overalls have two straps, two front buttons, puffy legs, and scattered floral embroidery.
  • The sandals are blue with open toes and tiny flower decorations.
  • The tan crossbody bag has a visible bee patch.
  • The daisy sits above the left ear.
  • The sun hat, picnic basket, and striped mat complete the garden scene.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the rounded toy shape, store the cat sitting upright rather than pressed flat in a box. Keep it away from strong sunlight so the blue sweater, yellow hat, and brown overalls do not fade.

For dust removal, use a soft brush and work gently around the embroidered flowers, bee patch, whiskers, and daisy. If the doll needs deeper cleaning, dab only the stained area and avoid soaking the stuffing.

When storing the accessories, place the hat brim flat, keep the basket handle curved naturally, and lay the crossbody bag loosely across the doll instead of pulling it tight. This keeps every small knitted detail looking close to the original garden display.
