Gauge and Stitch Notes

Gauge is not strict for this doll, but tight stitches are important. With DK yarn and a 2.25 mm hook, 6 sc across and 7 rounds should measure about 1 inch. If stuffing shows through, change to a smaller hook.

Stuff the head and body firmly, but do not overstuff the snout. The snout should stay long and tapered, not round. Add stuffing little by little and shape with your fingers as you work.

Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of each round. For color changes, finish the last yarn-over of the stitch with the new color. For clean stripes on the overalls, use joined rounds if preferred, but spiral rounds also work.

Head and Long Snout

Use moss green yarn. The nose begins at the black tip, then the snout grows longer and wider toward the face. The lower head becomes rounder near the back so the doll has the same garden rat profile as the image.

📌Thank you for reading the article

FO. Sew the handle to the narrow top of the blade. Use a few extra gray stitches at the join so the trowel looks sturdy.

Facial Embroidery

Use black embroidery thread for the smile and whiskers. The smile begins under one side of the snout and curves upward gently. Keep the expression friendly and simple.

  • Embroider a curved black smile from around R23 to R28 on one side of the snout.
  • Add 3 whiskers on each side of the black nose. Each whisker should be about 1.25 inches long.
  • Secure whisker knots inside the snout if possible.
  • If using thread whiskers, leave them slightly loose so they hang naturally like the image.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Sew the head to the body with the snout pointing forward and slightly downward. Use many firm stitches around the neck opening.
  2. Sew the ears high on the head. Angle them outward so the pink inner ears are visible from the front.
  3. Sew the eye whites onto the top of the snout, then add black pupils.
  4. Sew the white teeth underneath the snout, side by side.
  5. Attach the arms at shoulder height and position them down along the body.

  9. Sew the sunflower to the scarf and the tiny flowers between the ears.

  12. Place the crossbody bag diagonally across the body and sew it lightly at the shoulder and hip.
  13. Finish with the watering can and trowel as separate accessories.

Care Notes

Spot clean the doll with cool water and mild soap. Do not soak if you used buttons, beads, wire, or glued pieces. Press gently with a towel and allow it to air dry fully.

Keep the doll away from high heat, direct sunlight, and rough handling. The small flowers, bag, sandals, whiskers, and garden tools are decorative and should be treated gently.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The snout is long, tapered, and lightly stuffed.
  • The black nose is rounded and centered at the very front.
  • The ears are large, upright, and have pink inner circles.
  • The eyes sit high on the snout with black pupils.
  • The teeth hang under the snout.
  • The overalls have clear blue-and-cream stripes.
  • The red scarf sits above the overalls.
  • The sunflower is attached to the scarf front.
  • The brown bag crosses the body diagonally and includes the tiny bee.
  • The tail curls upward behind the doll.
  • The sandals include straps, toe bumps, and a small flower.
  • The watering can and trowel are finished as separate garden props.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For regular dust removal, use a soft dry brush and gently sweep over the stitches. Work in the direction of the crochet texture so the yarn fibers stay smooth.

If the doll becomes lightly stained, dampen a white cloth with cool water and a small amount of mild soap. Dab the stained area without rubbing. Use another damp cloth to remove soap residue.

Let the doll dry flat in a shaded place with good airflow. Do not use a dryer, iron, hair dryer, or direct sunlight. Heat can distort the stuffing, curl the stitches, and weaken sewn details.

Store the doll in a clean cotton bag or display box when not in use. Keep the watering can, trowel, and other small accessories together so the garden scene remains complete.
