This sweet baby knitting set includes a navy cardigan with puffin, lighthouse, cloud, sun, rock, and wave details, matching navy pants with soft white cuffs, a cozy earflap hat with a pom-pom and tiny puffin motif, plus little high-top booties with white soles and laces. The finished outfit is designed as a nautical baby set with a handmade lighthouse storybook feel.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern is written in US English knitting terms and is designed for an intermediate beginner who is comfortable with knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing, picking up stitches, simple seaming, and duplicate stitch embroidery. The cardigan is worked flat in pieces, then seamed for a structured baby garment similar to the image.
The colorwork motifs are added after knitting using duplicate stitch and light surface embroidery. This keeps the main pieces easier to knit and makes the small puffin, lighthouse, waves, and clouds neater on a baby-size cardigan. The pants, hat, and booties are written separately so each piece can be finished and adjusted independently.
Finished Size
- Suggested baby size: 6 to 12 months.
- Cardigan chest: about 20 in / 51 cm around.
- Cardigan length: about 10.5 in / 27 cm from shoulder to hem.
- Sleeve length: about 7 in / 18 cm from underarm to cuff.
- Pants waist: about 17 to 18 in / 43 to 46 cm, stretchy.
- Pants length: about 14 in / 35.5 cm from waist to cuff.
- Hat circumference: about 17 in / 43 cm, stretchy.
- Bootie sole length: about 4.25 in / 10.8 cm.
Yarn and Colors
Use soft baby-safe DK weight yarn. The image has a deep navy base with crisp white details and small red, yellow, orange, black, gray, and blue accents. Choose washable yarn because this is a baby outfit.
- Main color A, deep navy: 350 to 420 yd for cardigan, pants, hat, and booties.
- Color B, white: 80 to 120 yd for pants cuffs, bootie soles, clouds, puffin belly, and wave foam.
- Color C, bright blue: 20 yd for waves.
- Color D, medium gray: 15 yd for rocks.
- Color E, black: 15 yd for puffin back and wings.
- Color F, red: 10 yd for lighthouse stripes, roof, and puffin beak.
- Color G, yellow: 10 yd for sun and lighthouse light rays.
- Color H, orange: 5 yd for puffin feet and tiny beak detail.
- Buttons: 10 small wooden buttons, about 0.4 to 0.5 in / 10 to 12 mm.
Needles and Tools
- US 5 / 3.75 mm straight or circular needles for main cardigan, pants, and hat fabric.
- US 4 / 3.5 mm needles for ribbing, cuffs, button bands, and booties.
- US 3 / 3.25 mm needles may be used for tighter bootie soles if desired.
- Stitch markers.
- Tapestry needle.
- Small pom-pom maker or cardboard circles for the hat pom-pom.
- Waste yarn or stitch holders.
- Measuring tape.
- Row counter.
Gauge
Gauge in stockinette stitch: 22 sts and 30 rows = 4 in / 10 cm using US 5 / 3.75 mm needles after blocking. The cardigan and hat use mostly stockinette stitch. The pants use a textured stitch that is slightly denser, so measure the stockinette gauge first and keep your tension relaxed.
If you have more than 22 sts in 4 in, use a larger needle. If you have fewer than 22 sts in 4 in, use a smaller needle. A close gauge is important because the cardigan motifs need enough space across the lower fronts.

Special Notes Before You Begin
The cardigan in the image has a navy body, long sleeves, a simple round neckline, and a decorative front panel with two columns of wooden buttons. The lower fronts carry the seaside picture. The left front shows a puffin standing on rocks above blue waves, while the right front shows a striped lighthouse standing on rocks above waves.
The back of the cardigan can be kept plain navy for comfort. The button band is knitted separately by picking up stitches along the fronts. The double-column button look is decorative: one side has working buttonholes, and the opposite side has matching buttons sewn on to balance the design.

Shoulder Seams and Side Preparation
Block the back, fronts, and sleeves lightly before seaming. Do not stretch the fronts, because the motif placement depends on the lower edges staying square. Sew the shoulder seams using mattress stitch. Leave side seams and sleeve seams open until after the button bands and neckline are worked.
Cardigan Button Bands
The cardigan in the image shows a central navy band with small wooden buttons in two neat vertical columns. To copy that look, pick up stitches along each front edge and make a firm garter button band. Place working buttonholes on the wearer’s right front band and sew decorative matching buttons on the opposite band.
Left Front Band
- With RS facing and US 4 / 3.5 mm needles, pick up and K 54 sts evenly along the left front edge.
- Rows 1 to 7: K all sts.
- BO all sts knitwise on Row 8.
Right Front Band with Buttonholes
- With RS facing and US 4 / 3.5 mm needles, pick up and K 54 sts evenly along the right front edge.
- Row 1 WS: K all sts.
- Row 2 RS: K4, BO 2 sts, K6, BO 2 sts, K6, BO 2 sts, K6, BO 2 sts, K6, BO 2 sts, K to end.

- Rows 4 to 7: K all sts.
- BO all sts knitwise on Row 8.
Sew five working buttons to the left band to match the buttonholes. Then sew five additional buttons in a second column about 0.75 in / 2 cm beside the working column, matching the double-button style shown in the image.
Cardigan Neckband
- With RS facing, US 4 / 3.5 mm needles, and navy yarn, pick up and K 16 sts along right front neck, 22 sts across back neck, and 16 sts along left front neck. 54 sts total.
- Rows 1 to 6: K all sts.
- BO all sts knitwise, keeping the edge soft and stretchy.
Cardigan Seaming
- Set each sleeve into the armhole with the center sleeve cap aligned to the shoulder seam.
- Sew sleeve caps to armholes using mattress stitch.
- Sew sleeve seams from cuff to underarm.
- Sew side seams from hem to underarm.
- Weave in all navy yarn ends before adding the motifs so the inside stays tidy.
Cardigan Lower Wave Motif
The lower cardigan has waves across both fronts. Work the waves after seaming, using duplicate stitch and small surface stitches. Place the wave band about 0.75 in / 2 cm above the garter hem. Each front uses about 24 sts width and 10 rows height for the water area.

Blue Wave Base on Each Front
- Using bright blue yarn, duplicate stitch a wavy line across 22 sts on the lower front. Work over 2 rows at a time.
- Start 3 sts from the side seam and 5 rows above the garter hem.
- Wave row 1: duplicate stitch 3 sts straight, 2 sts one row higher, 3 sts straight, 2 sts one row lower, 3 sts straight, 2 sts one row higher, 3 sts straight, 2 sts one row lower, 2 sts straight.
- Repeat a second blue wave 3 rows above the first wave.
- Add white foam using running stitch or duplicate stitch directly above the blue curves.
Rock Shapes
- Use gray yarn above the waves on each front.
- For the puffin side, make a rock mound about 10 sts wide and 4 rows tall.
- For the lighthouse side, make a wider rock base about 13 sts wide and 4 rows tall.
- Duplicate stitch uneven gray blocks, then add a few darker gray straight stitches to make the rocks textured.
Puffin Motif on Left Front
The puffin stands on the left lower front. Its body is black with a white belly, a small white face patch, a red and orange beak, and orange feet. The finished puffin should be about 1.9 in / 5 cm tall.
Puffin Duplicate Stitch Map
- Placement: Start the puffin body 10 rows above the hem and 8 sts from the side seam.
- Body width: 8 sts at the widest point.
- Body height: 14 rows from feet to head.
- Rows 1 to 2: With orange yarn, make two small feet, each 2 sts wide, spaced 2 sts apart.
- Rows 3 to 6: With black yarn, duplicate stitch a rounded body 6 sts wide.
- Rows 5 to 10: Add a white belly patch over the center 4 sts.
- Rows 7 to 12: Shape the black back and head, narrowing from 6 sts to 4 sts.
- Rows 10 to 13: Add a white face patch over 2 sts wide and 3 rows tall.
- Beak: Work 2 red stitches projecting to one side of the face, then add 1 tiny orange stitch at the beak tip.
- Eye: Use one very small black straight stitch on the white face patch.
- Wing: Add a black slanted stitch on the body, about 4 rows long.
Keep the puffin small and slightly rounded. Do not make the beak too large. The charm of the image comes from the tiny storybook scale of the puffin against the waves.
Lighthouse Motif on Right Front
The lighthouse on the right front is tall, narrow, red and white striped, and sits on gray rocks above the blue waves. A small red roof and yellow light rays make it the brightest detail on the cardigan.
Lighthouse Duplicate Stitch Map
- Placement: Start the lighthouse base 9 rows above the hem and 9 sts from the right side seam.
- Total height: 20 rows including roof.
- Base width: 6 sts.
- Rows 1 to 3: White stripe, 6 sts wide.
- Rows 4 to 6: Red stripe, 6 sts wide.
- Rows 7 to 9: White stripe, 5 sts wide, centered.
- Rows 10 to 12: Red stripe, 5 sts wide, centered.
- Rows 13 to 15: White stripe, 4 sts wide, centered.
- Rows 16 to 17: Yellow window block, 3 sts wide.
- Rows 18 to 20: Red roof, shaped 5 sts, then 3 sts, then 1 st.
- Light rays: With yellow yarn, embroider three straight stitches to each side of the yellow window.
Sun and Cloud Motifs
The image shows a small yellow sun partly tucked behind a white cloud on one front and a fluffy white cloud on the opposite front. These details soften the navy background and balance the seaside scene.
Sun Behind Cloud
- Place the sun on the puffin side upper chest, about 1.5 in / 4 cm above the puffin head.
- With yellow yarn, duplicate stitch a half circle 5 sts wide and 3 rows tall.
- Add 4 short yellow straight stitches around the top edge for rays.
- Cover the lower edge with the white cloud stitches.
White Clouds
- For each cloud, use white yarn and duplicate stitch small puffy clusters.
- Make each cloud about 8 to 10 sts wide and 4 rows tall.
- Use uneven edges: 2 sts, then 4 sts, then 8 sts, then 6 sts.
- Add a few loose horizontal stitches with white yarn to create the soft raised texture seen in the image.
Navy Pants with White Waistband and Cuffs
The pants are navy with a thick white folded waistband and matching white ankle cuffs. The legs are slightly tapered. The image suggests a textured knit fabric, so this pattern uses seed stitch for the main pants to create a soft nubby surface.
Texture Stitch for Pants
- Row 1: K1, P1 across.
- Row 2: P the knit sts and K the purl sts.
- Repeat these 2 rows for seed stitch.

- Next round: K2, K2tog, yo, repeat from across to create a drawstring eyelet round if desired.
- Work 4 more rounds in garter texture, alternating knit and purl rounds.
- BO loosely.
Fold the waistband inward by half and sew it down lightly on the inside, leaving a small opening if you want to add a soft elastic or knitted drawstring. For the image look, keep the waistband thick and white, sitting like a cozy rolled cuff at the top.
Earflap Hat with Pom-Pom
The hat is navy with rounded crown shaping, a large pom-pom, side earflaps, braided or knitted ties, and a tiny puffin motif on the front. The lower edge is simple and slightly rolled, matching the cozy handmade style of the cardigan.

High-Top Baby Booties
The booties are navy high-top style shoes with white soles and white laces. They are knitted flat and seamed, which makes them easier to shape neatly. Make two booties the same, then lace them with twisted white cords.
Bootie Sole
- With US 4 / 3.5 mm needles and white yarn, CO 9 sts.
- Row 1: K all sts.
- Row 2: K1, M1, K to last st, M1, K1. 11 sts.

- Work 4 rounds or rows in garter texture. If working flat, K every row. If working in the round, alternate knit and purl rounds.
- Change to US 5 / 3.75 mm needles.
- Work 4 rounds or rows in stockinette stitch.
Shape Toe
- Mark the center 11 toe sts.
- Work to 1 st before toe section, K2tog, K9, SSK, work to end. 60 sts.
- Work 1 row even.
- Repeat the decrease row 5 more times, always keeping 9 center toe sts between decreases. 50 sts remain.
- Work 2 rows even in navy.
Bootie Upper
- Work across 25 sts and turn, leaving the back open like a high-top shoe tongue area.
- Work flat in stockinette stitch for 12 rows on all 50 sts, keeping the opening centered at the front.
- Next 4 rows: K all sts for a garter top edge.
- BO all sts loosely.
White Sole Trim
- With white yarn, surface crochet is not required. Instead, use a tapestry needle and duplicate stitch around the lower navy edge where the upper meets the sole.
- Make one clean white line around each bootie to copy the white edge seen in the image.
- Keep the stitches firm but not tight, so the sole stays flexible.
White Laces
- Cut 3 strands of white yarn, each 22 in / 56 cm long.
- Twist them together tightly, fold in half, and let them twist into a soft cord.
- Knot both ends.
- Thread the cord through the front of the bootie in a crisscross shape.
- Tie a bow at the front. Repeat for the second bootie.
Optional Knitted Drawstring for Pants
If you added the eyelet row to the waistband, make a soft navy or white drawstring. Keep it short and secure for safety. For a photo prop, a small bow looks sweet. For everyday baby wear, elastic inside the waistband is usually more practical.
- With US 4 / 3.5 mm needles, CO 4 sts.
- Work I-cord until it measures 24 in / 61 cm.
- BO and knot both ends.
- Thread through the waistband eyelets and tie gently.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Weave in all ends on the inside of each piece. Steam lightly without pressing the textured details flat. Sew buttons securely with several passes of thread, then knot firmly on the wrong side. Add the puffin eyes last using tiny black straight stitches.
Check that the cardigan motifs sit evenly across the lower fronts. The waves should line up visually when the cardigan is buttoned. The puffin should stand on the gray rocks, and the lighthouse should rise from its rock base with yellow light rays spreading outward.
- Use duplicate stitch for clean color blocks.
- Use small straight stitches for beaks, feet, eyes, and light rays.
- Do not leave long floats inside baby clothing.
- Secure every embroidered yarn end carefully.
- Trim the pom-pom firmly so no loose strands pull out easily.
Care Notes
Hand wash the finished outfit in cool water with gentle wool wash or baby-safe detergent. Do not wring the fabric. Press out water in a towel, reshape each piece, and dry flat. If you used machine-washable yarn, a delicate laundry bag is still recommended.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- Cardigan body is seamed neatly and lies flat.
- Ten buttons are sewn securely in two even columns.
- Puffin, lighthouse, clouds, sun, rocks, and waves are all added.
- Pants have matching white cuffs and a thick white waistband.
- Hat has two earflaps, two ties, one pom-pom, and one tiny puffin motif.
- Booties have white soles, white trim, and white crisscross laces.
- No loose yarn ends remain inside any baby garment.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Store the outfit folded flat in a clean cotton bag. Avoid hanging the cardigan for long periods because the shoulders may stretch. Keep the booties stuffed lightly with tissue if you want them to hold their high-top shape for photos.
For long-term keepsake storage, wash and dry every piece completely before packing. Add acid-free tissue between the cardigan, pants, hat, and booties. Keep the set away from direct sunlight so the navy color and red lighthouse stripes stay bright.
If the motifs become slightly fuzzy after washing, smooth them gently with your fingers while damp. Do not brush the duplicate stitch areas. The puffin and lighthouse details are small, so careful handling will keep the seaside scene crisp and charming.
