Knitting Tutorial: Little Fox Library Day Baby Outfit– Free Knitting Pattern.

This cozy baby outfit includes a cream raglan cardigan with caramel ribbing, wooden-style buttons, two lower patch pockets, and two fox-reading-a-book motifs on the front. The matching set also includes caramel suspender pants with ribbed cuffs and tiny book appliqués, a soft newsboy-style cap with a short brim, and little knitted loafers.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written to recreate the full knitted outfit shown in the reference image: a warm caramel and oatmeal baby set with a literary woodland theme. The main texture is smooth stockinette, while the edges use neat ribbing to keep the outfit soft, stretchy, and baby-friendly.

The cardigan is worked from the top down with raglan shaping. The body is oatmeal cream, while the neckband, front button bands, and buttons visually echo the caramel tone of the pants and cap. The fox motifs are added with duplicate stitch and embroidery after knitting, which is easier for most knitters than complex intarsia on a small baby garment.

The pants are worked from the waistband down in caramel yarn. The legs taper gently toward ribbed cuffs. Narrow suspenders are knitted separately and sewn to the back waistband, then crossed or kept straight over the shoulders and buttoned at the front. The little white book appliqués on the cuffs are added last.

The hat is a soft newsboy cap with a rounded crown, subtle wedge shaping, and a short knitted brim. The loafers are worked flat and seamed, with a small upper flap to match the tidy handmade look of the image.

Gauge

22 sts and 30 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in stockinette stitch on US 5 / 3.75 mm needles, blocked. The small knitted pieces in this outfit depend on a neat, even gauge, so make a swatch before starting.

If your gauge has more than 22 sts over 4 in, use a larger needle. If your gauge has fewer than 22 sts over 4 in, use a smaller needle. The outfit should be soft, not stiff, especially around the cuffs, waistband, and baby’s feet.

Special Notes Before You Begin

For a clean baby boutique finish, weave in ends as you go, especially on the cardigan motifs and cuff appliqués. Use a soft yarn with good stitch definition so the fox and book details look crisp.

The fox motifs are placed symmetrically on the cardigan front, just above the patch pockets. They can be made with duplicate stitch, or carefully embroidered over the knitted fabric. Duplicate stitch is recommended because it keeps the surface flat and soft.

All buttons should be sewn on very securely. For baby garments, check buttons before every wear. Use flat buttons rather than sharp or heavy buttons.

Cardigan Body

Neckband and Raglan Setup

Using US 4 / 3.5 mm needles and caramel yarn, CO 66 sts. Work 7 rows in 1×1 rib as follows.

  1. Row 1: k1, p1 across.
  2. Row 2: p1, k1 across.
  3. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until 7 rows are complete.

Change to US 5 / 3.75 mm needles and oatmeal cream yarn. Set up the raglan markers on the next RS row.

Setup Row: k8 right front, pm, k10 right sleeve, pm, k30 back, pm, k10 left sleeve, pm, k8 left front. You now have 4 raglan markers.

Work the raglan increases as follows. Keep the first 4 sts and last 4 sts in garter stitch for a stable front edge until the button bands are added later.

  1. Row 1, RS: k4, knit to 1 st before marker, m1R, k1, sm, k1, m1L; repeat this increase sequence at each marker, then knit to last 4 sts, k4. You have increased 8 sts.
  2. Row 2, WS: k4, purl to last 4 sts, k4.
  3. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 a total of 14 times. You should have 178 sts.
  4. Work 2 more rows even, keeping garter edges at the fronts.

Divide Body and Sleeves

On the next RS row, divide the cardigan into body and sleeves.

  1. k30 right front sts.
  2. Place 38 right sleeve sts on scrap yarn.
  3. CO 4 underarm sts using the backward loop method.
  4. k62 back sts.
  5. Place 38 left sleeve sts on scrap yarn.
  6. CO 4 underarm sts.
  7. k30 left front sts.

You now have 130 body sts. Continue in stockinette stitch with the first and last 4 sts in garter stitch. Work until the body measures 8.5 in / 21.5 cm from the back neck cast-on edge.

Lower Ribbed Hem

Change to caramel yarn and US 4 / 3.5 mm needles. Work 10 rows in 1×1 rib across all body sts. BO loosely in rib. The hem should sit flat and match the warm brown banding seen in the image.

Cardigan Sleeves

Return the 38 held sleeve sts to US 5 / 3.75 mm needles. Pick up and knit 4 sts from the underarm cast-on edge. You now have 42 sts. Join to work in the round, placing a marker at the center underarm.

  1. Rounds 1-6: knit all sts.
  2. Round 7: k1, ssk, knit to 3 sts before marker, k2tog, k1. You now have 40 sts.
  3. Rounds 8-13: knit all sts.
  4. Repeat the decrease round every 7th round until 32 sts remain.
  5. Continue even until sleeve measures 6.25 in / 16 cm from underarm.

Change to US 4 / 3.5 mm needles and oatmeal cream yarn. Work 8 rounds in 1×1 rib. BO loosely in rib. Repeat for the second sleeve.

The sleeve should be slim but not tight. In the image, the sleeves taper softly and end with a narrow cream cuff rather than a wide contrast cuff.

Cardigan Front Button Bands

The cardigan has caramel button bands running vertically down the front. Pick up the buttonhole band first on the wearer’s right front edge.

Buttonhole Band

Using US 4 / 3.5 mm needles and caramel yarn, with RS facing, pick up and knit 58 sts evenly along the right front edge from hem to neckband.

  1. Row 1, WS: p1, k1 across.
  2. Row 2, RS: k1, p1 across.
  3. Row 3, WS: p1, k1 across.
  4. Row 4, RS buttonhole row: work 5 sts in rib, BO 2 sts, work 9 sts in rib, BO 2 sts, work 9 sts in rib, BO 2 sts, work 9 sts in rib, BO 2 sts, work 9 sts in rib, BO 2 sts, work remaining sts in rib.
  5. Row 5, WS: work in rib, casting on 2 sts over each bound-off buttonhole space.
  6. Rows 6-7: work in rib.
  7. BO in rib.

Button Band

Using caramel yarn, pick up and knit 58 sts evenly along the opposite front edge. Work 7 rows in 1×1 rib with no buttonholes. BO in rib. Sew 5 buttons opposite the buttonholes, matching the vertical placement in the image.

Cardigan Neck Finish

The neck edge already begins with caramel ribbing. To make it look rounded and slightly fuller like the image, pick up 66 sts around the neckline using caramel yarn and US 4 / 3.5 mm needles.

  1. Row 1: k1, p1 across.
  2. Row 2: p1, k1 across.
  3. Rows 3-5: continue in 1×1 rib.
  4. BO loosely in rib.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Fold the neckband gently with your fingers while blocking. Do not stretch it wide. The final shape should sit like a small soft collar rather than a tall turtleneck.

Cardigan Patch Pockets

Make 2 identical pockets in oatmeal cream yarn. Each pocket is rectangular with a slightly textured top edge, placed below each fox motif.

  1. Using US 4 / 3.5 mm needles, CO 20 sts.
  2. Rows 1-4: knit all sts for a garter stitch base.
  3. Change to US 5 / 3.75 mm needles.
  4. Rows 5-20: work in stockinette stitch, knitting RS rows and purling WS rows.
  5. Change back to US 4 / 3.5 mm needles.
  6. Rows 21-25: work in 1×1 rib, beginning with k1.
  7. BO in rib.

Block both pockets into neat rectangles measuring about 2.75 in wide and 2.25 in tall. Sew one pocket to each cardigan front, with the bottom of each pocket sitting about 1 in above the hem ribbing. Use mattress stitch along the sides and bottom. Leave the ribbed top open.

Fox Reading Book Motifs for Cardigan

Each cardigan front has a small fox sitting behind an open book. The fox body is caramel, the face and tail tip are white, the book is dark brown with ivory pages, and tiny black or dark brown stitches form the eyes and nose.

Work the motifs after the cardigan is knitted and blocked. Use duplicate stitch for the larger colored areas and embroidery for the smallest face details.

Motif Placement

  • Place one motif on the right front, centered above the right pocket.
  • Place one motif on the left front, centered above the left pocket.
  • The bottom of each book should sit about 0.5 in above the pocket top.
  • Each motif should measure about 2.25 in wide and 2 in tall.

Duplicate Stitch Chart Instructions

Use the following 17-stitch wide by 15-row tall layout for each fox motif. Read RS rows from right to left when stitching on the fabric. Each listed row shows color placement across the motif area.

  • C: caramel fox color.
  • W: white or ivory.
  • D: dark brown.
  • B: black or very dark brown.
  • O: oatmeal background, no duplicate stitch.
  1. Row 1: O O O O O C O O O O O C O O O O O
  2. Row 2: O O O O C C C O O O C C C O O O O
  3. Row 3: O O O C C C C C O C C C C C O O O
  4. Row 4: O O C C W C C C C C C W C C C O O
  5. Row 5: O O C W W W C C C C W W W C C O O
  6. Row 6: O O C W B W C C C C W B W C C O O
  7. Row 7: O O C C W C C D D D C W C C C O O
  8. Row 8: O O O C C C D W W W D C C C O O O
  9. Row 9: O O O O C D W W D W W D C O O O O
  10. Row 10: O O C C C D W D D D W D C C C O O
  11. Row 11: O C C C O D D W W W D D O C C C O
  12. Row 12: C C O O O O D D D D D O O O O C C
  13. Row 13: O O O O O D W W W W W D O O O O O
  14. Row 14: O O O O D W D W D W D W D O O O O
  15. Row 15: O O O O D D D D D D D D D O O O O

After duplicate stitching the colored blocks, add the final tiny details. Embroider one small vertical dark stitch for the nose at the center of the white muzzle. Add one short dark stitch on each book page to suggest printed lines. Add a tiny V-shaped stitch near each fox ear using dark brown yarn.

For the tail, use caramel duplicate stitches curving along one side of the motif. Add a white tail tip with 3 small duplicate stitches. Keep the tension relaxed so the fox does not pucker the cardigan fabric.

Caramel Suspender Pants

The pants are worked from the waistband downward. They have a simple high waist, slim legs, ribbed cuffs, and two long suspenders with buttons at the front. The overall look is soft, rounded, and slightly vintage.

Waistband

Using US 4 / 3.5 mm circular needles and caramel yarn, CO 96 sts. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist.

  1. Rounds 1-10: work 2×2 rib, k2, p2 around.
  2. Round 11: knit all sts.
  3. Round 12: purl all sts to create a subtle turning ridge inside the waistband.
  4. Rounds 13-18: knit all sts.

This creates a comfortable waistband similar to the one in the image. For extra stretch, you may thread soft baby elastic through the inside later, but keep it gentle.

Pants Body and Rise

Continue in stockinette stitch in the round.

  1. Rounds 19-30: knit all sts.
  2. Round 31 increase round: k24, m1L, k48, m1L, k24. You now have 98 sts.

Divide for legs. Place the first 50 sts on one needle or holder for the right leg and the second 50 sts on another holder for the left leg.

Right Leg

Work the right leg in the round on double-pointed needles or magic loop.

  1. Join 50 sts in the round.
  2. Rounds 1-8: knit all sts.
  3. Round 9: k1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. You now have 48 sts.
  4. Rounds 10-17: knit all sts.
  5. Repeat the decrease round every 9th round until 38 sts remain.
  6. Continue even until leg measures 9.5 in / 24 cm from crotch divide.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Change to US 4 / 3.5 mm needles. Work 12 rounds in 2×2 rib. BO loosely in rib. The cuff should be snug enough to gather slightly, just like the ribbed cuffs in the reference image.

Left Leg

Work the left leg the same as the right leg. Join yarn at the inner leg, knit in the round, and follow the same decrease and cuff instructions. Sew any small gap at the crotch closed using the yarn tail and mattress stitch.

Suspender Straps

Make 2 straps in caramel yarn. The straps in the image are narrow, soft, and attached to the back waistband, then buttoned to the front waistband.

  1. Using US 4 / 3.5 mm needles, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: k1, p1 across.
  3. Row 2: p1, k1 across.
  4. Continue in 1×1 rib until strap measures 14 in / 35.5 cm.
  5. Buttonhole row: work 3 sts in rib, BO 2 sts, work 3 sts in rib.
  6. Next row: work in rib, CO 2 sts over the bound-off space.
  7. Work 3 more rows in rib.
  8. BO in rib.

Sew the plain ends of the straps to the back waistband, spaced about 3 in / 7.5 cm apart. Bring the straps over the shoulders and button them to the front waistband. Sew one button at the top front of each side of the pants, matching the placement in the image.

Book Appliqués for Pants Cuffs

The pants cuffs have tiny ivory book appliqués that look like little open library books. Make 6 small appliqués, 3 for each cuff.

Small Book Appliqué

  1. Using US 4 / 3.5 mm needles and ivory yarn, CO 8 sts.
  2. Rows 1-4: knit all sts.
  3. Row 5: k3, p2, k3 to create a center fold line.
  4. Rows 6-7: knit all sts.
  5. BO loosely.

With dark brown yarn, embroider 2 tiny horizontal lines on each side of the center fold. Do not make the lines too long; they should look like simple page marks. Sew 3 books evenly across the front of each cuff, about 0.25 in above the lower edge of the ribbing.

Newsboy Cap

The cap is worked in caramel yarn and shaped into a rounded crown with a short front brim. It should look soft and slightly gathered at the top, matching the cozy vintage cap in the image.

Hat Band

Using US 4 / 3.5 mm circular needles and caramel yarn, CO 88 sts. Join in the round.

  1. Rounds 1-8: work 1×1 rib, k1, p1 around.
  2. Change to US 5 / 3.75 mm needles.
  3. Round 9: knit all sts.
  4. Round 10 increase round: k8, m1L around. You now have 99 sts.

Crown

  1. Rounds 11-24: knit all sts.

  5. Round 29: k7, k2tog around. You now have 72 sts.
  6. Round 31: k6, k2tog around. You now have 63 sts.
  7. Round 33: k5, k2tog around. You now have 54 sts.
  8. Round 35: k4, k2tog around. You now have 45 sts.
  9. Round 37: k3, k2tog around. You now have 36 sts.
  10. Round 39: k2, k2tog around. You now have 27 sts.
  11. Round 41: k1, k2tog around. You now have 18 sts.
  12. Round 42: k2tog around. You now have 9 sts.

Cut yarn, leaving a 10 in tail. Thread the tail through the remaining sts, pull closed, and secure inside. The crown will have gentle gathered lines from the decrease shaping.

Continue around the shoe opening. Knit one full round, picking up small gaps at each side of the toe flap if needed. Work 4 rounds in 1×1 rib around the opening. BO loosely.

Loafer Strap

Using US 4 / 3.5 mm needles and caramel yarn, CO 5 sts.

  1. Rows 1-18: knit all sts.
  2. BO knitwise.

Sew the strap across the top of the shoe, just behind the toe shaping. Repeat for the second shoe. For a tidy finish, use dark brown yarn to embroider one small horizontal line at each side of the strap.

Optional Button Detail for Loafers

The shoes in the image are simple and rounded, but you may add one small stitch detail to each strap if desired. Use dark brown yarn and make 2 tiny vertical stitches at the center of the strap to imitate a small loafer tab.

Blocking Instructions

Block every piece before final assembly. Soak knitted pieces in cool water with a tiny amount of gentle wool wash. Press out water with a towel. Do not wring.

Lay the cardigan flat with the fronts straight and the button bands aligned. Shape the raglan seams gently with your fingers. Make sure the pockets are square and the fox motifs are not stretched.

Lay the pants flat with both legs equal in length. Shape the waistband and cuffs without pulling. Pin the suspenders straight and let them dry before sewing buttons.

For the hat, place it over a small bowl or rolled towel to dry into a rounded crown. Shape the brim with your fingers. For the loafers, stuff lightly with dry cloth while drying so they keep their soft shoe shape.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Sew the cardigan pockets in place first, then add the fox motifs above them. Use tiny, even duplicate stitches and keep all yarn tails woven securely on the wrong side. Add eyes, noses, ears, and book lines only after the colored areas are complete.

  • Sew cardigan buttons firmly to the caramel button band.
  • Sew suspender buttons firmly to the front waistband of the pants.
  • Attach the book appliqués to the pants cuffs with small whip stitches.
  • Check that all seams are smooth and soft against the inside of the garments.
  • Trim yarn tails only after you are sure they are woven through several stitches.

Care Notes

Hand wash the outfit in cool water using gentle baby-safe wool wash. Lay flat to dry. Avoid hanging the cardigan or pants while wet because the weight of the water can stretch the fabric.

Do not tumble dry unless your yarn label clearly says it is safe. Keep the hat brim flat while drying, and reshape the loafers with your fingers before they are completely dry.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Cardigan: 5 buttons attached, buttonholes open, pockets sewn evenly, fox motifs centered above pockets.
  • Pants: legs equal length, cuffs even, suspenders secure, 3 book appliqués sewn on each cuff.
  • Hat: crown gathered neatly, brim centered at the front, band not stretched out.
  • Loafers: soles equal size, straps sewn flat, openings stretchy enough for baby feet.
