This cozy baby knitting set includes a soft sky-blue cardigan, matching footed pants, a Fair Isle snowflake hat with a pom-pom, and tiny booties. The outfit is decorated with cream snowy borders, gray accent rows, and sweet penguin “postcard” panels placed on the cardigan, pants, and booties to match the winter nursery look in the image.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern is written for a baby size approximately 3 to 6 months. The finished cardigan is designed with a round yoke, front button band, long sleeves, ribbed hem, and two penguin picture panels on the lower front. The pants are footed leggings with a ribbed waistband and matching snowy postcard penguin panels on each leg.
The hat is a close-fitting beanie with a folded-looking rib edge, a cream and gray snowflake band, blue crown shaping, and a fluffy pom-pom. The booties are soft, high ankle slippers with ribbed cuffs, small side pom-poms, and a mini snowflake motif across the instep.
- Skill level: Intermediate beginner to intermediate.
- Construction: Mostly knit flat for the cardigan, mostly knit in the round for pants, hat, and booties.
- Main color: Pale snowy blue.
- Contrast colors: Warm cream, soft gray, charcoal gray, white, and a small amount of golden yellow.

Materials

- 95 yd / 87 m warm cream for snowy borders and penguin bellies.
- 45 yd / 41 m soft gray for accent lines.
- 35 yd / 32 m charcoal gray for penguin heads, wings, and outlines.
- 12 yd / 11 m white for penguin faces and snow details.
- 6 yd / 5.5 m golden yellow for beaks and feet.
- US 3 / 3.25 mm circular needle, 24 in / 60 cm long.
- US 4 / 3.5 mm circular needle, 24 in / 60 cm long.
- US 3 / 3.25 mm double-pointed needles or magic loop needle.
- US 4 / 3.5 mm double-pointed needles or magic loop needle.
- 5 small blue buttons, about 3/8 in / 10 mm wide.
- Removable stitch markers.
- Tapestry needle.
- Small pom-pom maker or cardboard rings.
- Waste yarn or stitch holders.
Gauge
22 stitches and 30 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in stockinette stitch using US 4 / 3.5 mm needles after gentle blocking. For the ribbing, use US 3 / 3.25 mm needles so the edges pull in neatly like the outfit shown in the image.
Gauge matters because the penguin panels are worked by stitch count. If your gauge is larger, change to a smaller needle. If your gauge is smaller, change to a larger needle. The fabric should feel soft but not loose, because baby garments need enough structure to hold the picture motifs cleanly.

Colorwork Notes
The cardigan penguins and the pants penguins are best worked using intarsia for the large blocks and duplicate stitch for the tiniest face details. The snowflake bands may be worked as stranded colorwork. Keep floats loose, especially on the hat and pants, so the fabric stays stretchy and comfortable.
When working flat intarsia, twist yarns together at every color change. When working stranded rounds, catch long floats every 3 to 4 stitches. Do not pull tightly. A slightly relaxed float helps the snowflake bands lie flat after blocking.

Penguin Postcard Panel Chart Written in Rows
Each large penguin panel is worked over 23 stitches and 28 rows. On the cardigan, each panel is framed with a cream border. On the pants, each penguin is tilted visually by placing it inside a narrow cream rectangle on the front of each leg. The penguin itself remains straight in the knitting.
For every RS row, read the row from right to left. For every WS row, read the row from left to right. Use MC around the panel unless a border color is named. After knitting, use duplicate stitch for the tiny black eyes if you prefer more control.

- Use the first 104 sts for the 8-st repeat.

Penguin Front Placement
The cardigan fronts each show a cream rectangular frame with a penguin centered inside. The two penguins sit low on the body, just above the snowy lower border. Keep the back plain blue so the outfit stays soft and wearable.

The cardigan in the image has a neat center opening with five small blue buttons. Pick up the bands carefully so they lie flat and do not ripple. Use the smaller needle for a firm edge.

First Leg With Penguin Panel
The penguin panel is worked on the front 23 sts of the leg. Because the leg is in the round, intarsia in the round may feel difficult. The easiest method is to work the leg back and forth during the penguin section, then seam the inside of the colorwork opening invisibly.

- Sew the second pom-pom slightly behind the first for the double-bobble look in the image.
- Secure all ends firmly inside the bootie.
Optional I-Cord Waist Tie
The pants can be worn with only the ribbed waistband, but an optional soft tie helps the waistband stay neat. Make sure the tie is short and safe. For babies, never leave long cords loose during sleep or unsupervised wear.
- With US 3 / 3.25 mm double-pointed needles and MC, CO 4 sts.
- Knit 4 sts, slide sts to other needle end, and knit again without turning.
- Continue until cord measures 24 in / 61 cm.
- BO all sts.
- Thread through the waistband eyelets using a safety pin or bodkin.
- Tie in a small bow at the front.
Penguin Face Embroidery
The penguin faces are small, so embroidery gives the cleanest result. Use short duplicate stitches rather than long loose strands. The expression should be gentle and simple, with tiny eyes and a small yellow beak.
- Eyes: Use CC3 and make one small duplicate stitch on each side of the white face.
- Beak: Use CC5 and make one or two tiny horizontal stitches at the center of the face.
- Chest mark: Use CC3 and duplicate stitch a small V shape on the cream belly.
- Feet: Use CC5 and strengthen the yellow stitches at the base of each penguin.
- Outline: If needed, use CC3 to tidy the side edges of the head and wings.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Sew all seams with mattress stitch where possible. Close the cardigan underarms, sleeve seams, pants inner leg openings, and any small gaps near the foot shaping. Keep seams flat so the outfit is comfortable against baby skin.
Lay the cardigan flat and check that both penguin panels sit at the same height. Lay the pants flat and check that the penguins face forward on each leg. If any duplicate-stitch details look uneven, adjust them before the final blocking.
Attach all buttons securely with matching thread or MC yarn. Tug gently on each button after sewing. Buttons are small parts, so they must be checked often and never used on sleepwear for an unattended baby.
Care Notes
- Hand wash or machine wash on a gentle cycle if your yarn label allows it.
- Use cool water and mild baby-safe detergent.
- Do not wring the colorwork pieces.
- Roll in a towel to remove extra water.
- Dry flat, shaping the cardigan yoke, pants legs, hat brim, and bootie cuffs neatly.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- All yarn ends are woven in securely.
- The cardigan buttonholes line up with the buttons.
- The yoke lies flat without tight floats.
- The pants waistband stretches comfortably.
- The feet are the same length.
- The hat pom-pom is attached firmly.
- The bootie pom-poms are sewn tightly.
- Penguin eyes, beaks, bellies, wings, and feet are complete.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
To preserve the snowy blue color and cream details, wash the full set with similar light colors only. Avoid bleach and strong stain removers because they can weaken baby yarn and dull the soft penguin details.
Store the outfit flat in a breathable cotton bag. Do not hang the cardigan for long periods, because the yoke may stretch. Keep the hat pom-pom uncrushed by placing tissue paper loosely around it.
If the set is kept as a keepsake, wash and dry it completely before storage. Add a small lavender sachet outside the garment bag if desired, but do not place scented items directly against the knitted fabric.
