The matching pants, bonnet, and booties complete the cozy nursery-style outfit.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This outfit is designed to look soft, warm, and handmade, with a creamy natural color and textured appliques. The main fabric is smooth stockinette stitch, while all edges use neat 1×1 ribbing. The lamb and cloud details are made separately, then sewn on with small, careful stitches.

The cardigan is knitted flat in separate pieces, then seamed. This makes the shape easier for newer knitters while still creating the diagonal wrap front shown in the image. The bonnet is worked flat with a gathered back crown and knitted ties. The pants are worked from the waistband down with simple shaping.

  • Skill level: Advanced beginner to intermediate
  • Size: Newborn to 3 months
  • Finished cardigan chest: about 18 in / 46 cm
  • Finished cardigan length: about 9 in / 23 cm
  • Finished pants length: about 13 in / 33 cm
  • Bonnet depth: about 6.5 in / 16.5 cm
  • Bootie sole length: about 3.5 in / 9 cm

Materials

  • Main yarn: 350 to 420 yards of DK weight baby yarn in warm cream or ivory
  • Texture yarn: 40 yards of fluffy boucle, chenille, or brushed DK yarn in matching cream for lamb body, clouds, and knee motifs
  • Small face yarn: scraps of beige, soft brown, and black embroidery yarn
  • Needles: US 5 / 3.75 mm straight or circular needles for main fabric
  • Ribbing needles: US 4 / 3.5 mm needles
  • Optional double-pointed needles: US 4 / 3.5 mm for bonnet ties and bootie cords
  • Notions: tapestry needle, stitch markers, stitch holders, measuring tape, scissors, soft elastic for waistband, removable stitch markers, pins

Gauge

22 stitches and 30 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in stockinette stitch using US 5 / 3.75 mm needles after gentle blocking.

Gauge is important because baby garments need safe proportions. A slightly smaller gauge will make a firmer newborn size. A slightly larger gauge will create a roomier 0 to 3 month size. Wash and dry your swatch the same way you plan to wash the outfit.

General Knitting Notes

Slip the first stitch of every row purlwise on cardigan pieces, bonnet pieces, and bootie pieces unless the row says otherwise. This creates cleaner side edges for seaming and picking up bands.

All seams should be soft and flat. Use mattress stitch for side seams and sleeve seams. Use whip stitch only for appliques, bonnet ties, and tiny decorative pieces.

The fluffy lamb and cloud motifs are intentionally raised. Do not press them flat when blocking. Steam lightly around them instead of directly on top of them.

Cardigan Ribbed Wrap Band

The ribbed band frames the neckline and creates the visible diagonal wrap edge. It should look thick enough to stand out, but not so tight that it pulls the fronts out of shape.

  1. With smaller needles and RS facing, start at the lower right front corner.
  2. Pick up and knit 34 sts along the right diagonal front edge.
  3. Pick up 18 sts along the back neck.

  • Sew the beige face partly tucked under the fluffy body edge.
  • Add ears after the face is attached.
  • Use tiny brown stitches for sleepy eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Add the clouds above the lamb and on the bonnet last.
  • Check the back of every applique for loose threads.

Care Notes

Hand wash the outfit in cool water and dry flat. Do not bleach, tumble dry, or iron directly over the fluffy lamb, clouds, or knee motifs. A gentle reshape while damp will keep the cardigan wrap front and bonnet ties looking neat.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Cardigan seams are soft and flat.
  • Wrap band lies smoothly without pulling.
  • Inner tie is secure and not too long.
  • Pants elastic is comfortable and fully enclosed.
  • Bonnet ties are firmly sewn to the lower corners.
  • Bootie seams are smooth inside.
  • All lamb and cloud appliques are securely attached.
  • No loose yarn tails remain inside the baby outfit.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Wash the set separately the first time to protect the cream color. Use a mild detergent made for wool or baby garments. After washing, roll each piece in a towel and press out extra water with your hands.

Store the outfit flat in a breathable cotton bag. Avoid hanging the cardigan or pants for long periods because knitted baby garments can stretch. Keep the bonnet ties untangled and place tissue paper inside the booties if you want them to hold their rounded shape.

For long-term storage, make sure every piece is completely dry. Place the lamb cardigan on top so the raised applique is not crushed. Refresh the fluffy clouds and lamb bobbles by gently lifting them with your fingers after storage.
