Crochet Tutorial: Badger Candlelit Bookshop Burrow – Free Crochet Pattern.

This cozy crochet scene makes a woodland burrow bookshop with a rounded mossy green roof, cream stone walls, arched doorway, round glowing windows, wooden fence, flower beds, mushrooms, candles, bookshelves, book baskets, a badger bookseller, a rabbit visitor, a hedgehog reader, a tiny bird, and a cobblestone courtyard.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is designed as a detailed display piece. The finished project is a soft diorama with a flat oval garden base, a half-dome burrow building, a front reading courtyard, and small removable amigurumi characters.

The bookshop is worked in separate pieces so beginners can manage the project step by step. The base is crocheted first, then the burrow wall, moss roof, door, windows, interior shelves, outdoor accessories, flowers, fence, and characters are added.

The finished size will vary with yarn and tension. Using worsted weight yarn and a 3.0 mm hook, the sample measures about 13 in wide, 10 in deep, and 9 in tall. The badger stands about 4 in tall, the rabbit about 3 in tall, and the hedgehog about 3 in seated height.

Skill Level

Confident beginner to intermediate. The main stitches are simple, but the pattern includes shaping, sewing, small accessories, surface crochet, embroidery, and careful placement. Read each section before starting and pin pieces in place before sewing.

Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton or acrylic yarn in cream, olive green, dark green, tan, brown, dark brown, gray, black, white, red, yellow, lavender, blue, pink, purple, and assorted book colors.
  • 3.0 mm crochet hook for firm amigurumi stitches.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook for flowers, mushrooms, tiny books, and facial details.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Small scissors.
  • Cardboard, plastic canvas, or thick felt for stabilizing the base and burrow wall.
  • Optional wooden buttons for the door knob and sign posts.
  • Optional warm yellow felt or embroidery thread for window glow.
  • Optional craft wire for bendable flower stems and candle flames.
  • Black safety eyes, 5 mm for badger, rabbit, hedgehog, and bird, or black embroidery thread.

Abbreviations

  • MR = magic ring
  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • tr = treble crochet
  • inc = 2 sc in same stitch
  • dec = invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO = back loop only
  • FLO = front loop only
  • FO = fasten off
  • st = stitch
  • R = round or row

Gauge and Tension

Gauge is not critical, but the stitches should be tight enough so stuffing does not show. For the display base, 6 sc by 6 rows should measure about 1 in square with worsted yarn and a 3.0 mm hook.

Use a smaller hook than recommended on your yarn label. This keeps the burrow wall firm, the figures smooth, and the tiny books crisp. If your fabric feels floppy, go down one hook size.

General Notes

  • Work amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to turn.
  • Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round.
  • Stuff gradually and firmly, but do not overstuff flat furniture pieces.
  • For a neat display scene, weave in all ends before final assembly.
  • When making paired pieces, such as windows or chair arms, make them the same size before sewing.

Color Placement Guide

The scene uses a woodland palette. The burrow wall is warm cream with light tan shading. The roof is moss green with darker green vines and leaves. The door, shelves, fence, and chair are deep brown. Flowers are mostly white daisies with yellow centers, plus small purple, blue, pink, and lavender blossoms.

The badger has a white face, black side markings, black ears, dark body, striped apron, and a red book. The rabbit is cream with long upright ears and holds a little paper. The hedgehog has a tan face, brown spines, and sits in a cozy brown armchair reading a green book.

Oval Garden Base

The base is an oval green mat with a cobblestone courtyard at the center and a tan woven path at the front right. Crochet the base firmly because it supports the entire bookshop scene.

Main Green Oval Base

Use olive green yarn and 3.0 mm hook.

  1. R1: Ch 31. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 28 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Working along opposite side of chain, sc in next 28 ch, 2 sc in last ch. Total 62 sc.

  8. R8: BLO sc around to create a raised edge. Total 92 sc.
  9. R9: Sc around. Join with sl st and FO, leaving a long tail.

Trace the oval onto cardboard or plastic canvas. Cut the insert slightly smaller than the crochet base. Sew the insert under the base with a second matching green oval or a felt backing if desired.

Raised Grass Border

Join dark green yarn in any front loop from R8.

  1. R1: Ch 1, sc in each exposed front loop around. Join with sl st.
  2. R2: Ch 1, repeat sc, ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in next ch, sc in next base st around for a grassy picot edge.

This uneven border gives the garden edge the soft, mossy look shown in the photo. Do not make every blade identical. Skip one stitch occasionally if the edge becomes too crowded.

Cobblestone Courtyard

The courtyard sits in front of the door and fills the center of the base with gray rounded stones. Make a flat gray oval, then embroider individual stones with darker gray yarn.

Gray Courtyard Oval

Use medium gray yarn.

  1. R1: Ch 23. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 20, 3 sc in last ch, sc 20 on opposite side, 2 sc in last ch. Total 46 sc.
  2. R2: Inc, sc 20, inc in next 3 st, sc 20, inc in next 2 st. Total 52 sc.

  5. R5: Sc around. Join and FO with a long tail.

Sew the courtyard to the front center of the green base, leaving space at the right front for the tan rug path. With dark gray yarn, embroider uneven circles and ovals across the courtyard. Make stones in different sizes so the ground looks hand-laid and organic.

Tan Front Path Rug

The tan path sits at the front right and looks like a small woven mat leading into the bookshop garden.

  1. Use tan yarn. Ch 16.
  2. R1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Total 15 sc. Ch 1, turn.
  3. R2-R14: Sc across. Ch 1, turn after each row.
  4. R15: Sc across. FO.

Surface crochet five straight lines lengthwise with slightly darker tan yarn. Then surface crochet three horizontal lines across the mat. Sew the mat to the front right edge of the base with one corner slightly angled outward.

Burrow Building Wall

The burrow is a half-circle cream wall with an arched doorway in the center and round windows on both sides. The wall is made flat, then attached to the base and roof with light stuffing behind it.

Cream Half-Circle Wall

Use cream yarn. Work in rows.

Work one round of sc evenly around the entire wall. Place 2 sc in each lower corner. This smooths the half-circle shape and gives a clean sewing edge. Cut a matching cardboard insert and set aside.

Stone Texture on Wall

Use light tan yarn and a yarn needle. Embroider short horizontal lines across the cream wall, spacing them irregularly. Add a few vertical separators between the lines. Keep the stitches subtle so the wall still looks soft and crocheted.

Near the roofline, embroider darker olive patches that look like moss creeping down the cream wall. These patches should be heavier above the doorway and in the upper left and right corners.

Mossy Green Dome Roof

The roof is a thick dark green half-dome that wraps over the burrow like a leafy hill. It extends beyond the cream wall and sits slightly forward, creating the cave-like opening seen in the image.

Roof Panel

Use moss green yarn. Work in rows.

Stack the books with the largest on bottom. Sew them together with a few hidden stitches. Embroider cream or gray page lines along one short edge.

Flower Bed Leaves and Ground Texture

Use three green shades to make the garden lush. Add leaves before sewing flowers so the blossoms appear nestled into the greenery.

Simple Leaf

  1. Ch 6.
  2. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch. FO.

Make 40 leaves. Sew leaves around the front fence, both sides of the path, the roof edge, the base of the windows, and around the right mushroom cluster.

Curly Moss Strand

  1. Ch 18.
  2. Work 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each chain across. FO.

Make 8 curly moss strands. Sew them along the roof and front garden border. These small curls help create the soft wild woodland texture shown on the roof and ground.

Burrow Assembly

Before sewing, place the cream wall upright at the back half of the base. Place the roof over it so the green roof extends slightly past the wall. The roof should frame the doorway and create a cozy cave opening.

  1. Sew the interior shelf panel behind the arched doorway, keeping it visible through the entrance.
  2. Place the cardboard insert behind the cream wall.
  3. Sew the bottom of the wall to the back half of the base using cream yarn.
  4. Add a small amount of stuffing behind the upper wall for gentle curve.
  5. Sew the green roof over the wall edge using moss green yarn.
  6. Pin the roof first, then sew slowly around the curve.
  7. Add extra stitches at the lower side edges so the burrow stands securely.

If the wall leans backward, sew two hidden support stitches from the back of the roof to the green base. If it leans forward, add a narrow cardboard brace behind the shelf panel.

Outdoor Scene Placement

Place the largest pieces first. The shelf goes on the left, the chair goes on the right, and the doorway remains open in the center. This arrangement keeps the scene balanced and matches the photo’s cozy bookshop composition.

  1. Sew the outdoor bookshelf to the left side of the courtyard.
  2. Sew the left book basket in front of the shelf.
  3. Sew the armchair to the right side, angled slightly toward the center.
  4. Sew the note basket and teacup near the right side of the door.
  5. Sew the rabbit in the center courtyard facing the open door.
  6. Sew the bird close to the rabbit’s feet.
  7. Sew the hedgehog into the chair with the green book facing outward.
  8. Sew or lightly tack the badger inside the doorway.
  9. Add the sign near the front left fence.
  10. Add candles last so the flames remain upright.

Detailed Decorative Placement

The charm of this pattern comes from the small details. Place flowers in uneven clusters instead of straight lines. Keep the daisies larger and more visible on the roof and front edge. Use tiny colored buds to fill spaces around the fence.

  • Place one red mushroom on the upper left roof near a white flower.
  • Place two mushrooms on the upper right roof, one taller than the other.
  • Place one mushroom on the right garden edge near the fence.
  • Place one mushroom low on the left garden edge if you want extra balance.
  • Place white daisies around the front curve and on both roof sides.
  • Place lavender and purple flowers along the front fence.
  • Place blue and yellow flowers near the book basket.
  • Place tiny leaves around every mushroom stem.

Optional Warm Window Glow

To make the windows look candlelit, add a second circle of golden yellow behind each yellow window before sewing. You can also add a few orange straight stitches near the lower part of each window.

For a deeper frame, crochet one extra round of dark brown sc around each window. This makes the windows stand proud from the cream wall, similar to the thick round frames in the image.

Optional Interior Floor

If your doorway shows too much empty space, crochet a tiny brown floor mat for inside the shop.

  1. Use medium brown yarn. Ch 14.
  2. R1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Total 13 sc. Ch 1, turn.
  3. R2-R6: Sc across. Ch 1, turn.
  4. R7: Sc across. FO.

Sew the mat inside the doorway, behind the threshold. This helps the badger stand upright and makes the interior look finished.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check all figures before sewing them permanently. The badger should look toward the rabbit, the rabbit should hold the paper upward, and the hedgehog should sit comfortably in the chair with the book covering the lower body.

  • Badger: Add black face markings, small nose, white cheek highlights, and apron stripes.
  • Rabbit: Add nose, mouth, pink cheeks, and a few stitches inside each ear.
  • Hedgehog: Add nose, smile, top head tufts, and short brown spine stitches.
  • Bird: Add tiny eyes, beak, and wing stitches.

Use pins to test every placement. Once the scene looks balanced, sew with matching yarn and small hidden stitches. Trim ends carefully and pull tails into the stuffing or underside of the base.

Care Notes

This project is best used as a decorative display piece. Because it includes small parts, buttons, and firm inserts, it is not intended for babies or pets. Keep it away from moisture, direct sunlight, and rough handling.

  • Spot clean only with a damp cloth.
  • Do not machine wash.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Reshape flowers, leaves, and mushrooms gently with your fingers.
  • Store upright in a clean, dry place.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The oval base lies flat and feels firm.
  • The cream burrow wall stands upright.
  • The green roof curves evenly over the wall.
  • The arched door opens slightly outward.
  • Both round windows are level and framed.
  • The badger, rabbit, hedgehog, and bird are secure.
  • The fence leaves a clear opening at the tan path.
  • Books, baskets, candles, sign, teacup, flowers, leaves, and mushrooms are attached.
  • No loose yarn ends are visible.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Dust the bookshop gently with a soft makeup brush or clean paintbrush. Work from the roof downward so dust does not settle into the flowers. Avoid pulling on vines, candle flames, mushroom caps, and flower petals.

If a small area becomes dirty, dab it with cool water and mild soap. Do not rub the stitches. Press with a clean towel and let the piece air dry completely before storing.

To preserve the dome shape, store the burrow in a box with tissue paper around the roof and figures. Do not place heavy items on top. Keep the display away from strong sunlight to prevent color fading, especially on red mushrooms, green leaves, and yellow window details.

Your Badger Candlelit Bookshop Burrow is complete: a tiny woodland story filled with books, warm windows, flowers, moss, mushrooms, candles, and cozy handmade characters.
