This sweet knit duck doll is dressed for a cozy apple orchard day, with a green duck head, golden bill, mustard cable overalls, cream ribbed turtleneck sweater, blue pom-pom beret, red sandals, a green crossbody satchel, a tiny daisy, a small apple basket, and a little knitted book. The finished doll is soft, detailed, and designed as a decorative handmade keepsake.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Finished height: About 11.5 inches from the bottom of the sandals to the top of the beret pom-pom.
  • Seated height: About 10 inches when the legs hang naturally over a table edge.
  • Head width: About 4.5 inches across the widest part.
  • Body width: About 3.5 inches across the overalls.
  • Skill level: Confident beginner to intermediate. The doll uses small pieces, shaping, short rows, cables, ribbing, embroidery, and neat seaming.

Materials

  • Yarn weight: DK or light worsted yarn. Use the same weight for all main doll pieces so the proportions stay balanced.
  • Green yarn: Duck head and satchel, about 55 yards.
  • Golden yellow yarn: Bill, feet, legs, and overalls, about 95 yards.
  • Cream yarn: Sweater, sleeves, turtleneck, and book pages, about 75 yards.
  • Brown yarn: Wing tips, basket handle, book edge, and apple stems, about 20 yards.
  • Blue yarn: Beret and pom-pom, about 30 yards.
  • Red yarn: Sandal straps and soles, about 20 yards.
  • White yarn: Daisy petals, about 8 yards.
  • Yellow yarn scrap: Daisy center.
  • Apple colors: Small scraps of red, green, and light green yarn.
  • Needles: US 3, 3.25 mm double-pointed needles or circular needles for magic loop.
  • Optional smaller needles: US 2, 2.75 mm needles for firmer accessories.
  • Safety eyes: Two black 9 mm safety eyes.
  • Buttons: Two tiny wood-look buttons for the overall straps and one tiny button for the satchel flap.
  • Stuffing: Polyester fiberfill.
  • Other tools: Tapestry needle, stitch markers, cable needle, scissors, pins, row counter, and small amount of black embroidery thread.

Gauge

In stockinette stitch with US 3 needles, 24 stitches and 32 rows should measure about 4 inches. Gauge is not as strict as garment knitting, but the fabric must be firm enough that stuffing does not show through. If your stitches look loose, go down one needle size.

The doll in the image has a smooth but visible knitted texture. Do not knit too tightly, because the face and bill need soft shaping. Aim for even stitches, firm seams, and gentle stuffing rather than a hard, overfilled toy.

Construction Notes

This doll is worked in separate knitted pieces and then assembled. The head is a rounded green duck head with a wide golden bill sewn across the lower front. The body is covered by a cream sweater and mustard overall layer. The overalls include raised cable details on the front panel and on each leg.

The legs are shaped so they can hang over a table edge. The red sandals are made separately and sewn over the golden feet. The sleeves are cream, while the visible wing tips are dark brown. The blue beret sits slightly tilted to one side, with a small pom-pom at the top.

The satchel is a small rectangular knitted pouch with a flap and a diagonal strap. The daisy is placed near the right side of the duck’s head, just below the beret brim. The apple basket and little book are optional display pieces, but they help match the orchard theme in the image.

Head

Use green yarn. Work in the round. Stuff gradually as you knit so the head becomes round, smooth, and slightly wider at the cheeks.

Fold the bill very lightly so the cast-on edge curves under. Sew the bill to the head from eye level downward, with the top edge between Rnds 25 and 26. Add a thin layer of stuffing under the center before closing the lower edge.

Use golden yarn to embroider two short vertical nostril lines on the bill. Place them about 4 stitches apart at the center. Pull the embroidery gently so the bill dimples inward, matching the soft shaped look in the image.

Body Base

The body is hidden under the sweater and overalls, but it needs a stable pear shape. Use golden yellow yarn because some areas may peek through near the legs.

  1. CO 10 sts and join in the round.

Slide the sweater over the body from the neck downward before attaching the head. The ribbed collar should stand high and cover the lower part of the head-neck join. Fold the top half of the collar slightly outward for the plush, thick look.

Mustard Overall Bib With Center Cable

The front bib is worked flat and sewn over the sweater. The center cable panel creates the strong vertical texture shown on the doll’s mustard overalls.

  1. Using mustard yarn, CO 24 sts.
  2. Row 1, WS: P4, k2, p12, k2, p4.
  3. Row 2, RS: K4, p2, k12, p2, k4.

  13. Work 3 more rows as established.
  14. BO all sts.

Pin the bib onto the front of the body. The lower edge should sit slightly below the belly center. The top edge should reach the lower part of the cream turtleneck. Sew the side edges neatly with mustard yarn, leaving the top free for straps.

Overall Back Panel

The back panel is simpler than the front. It supports the straps and covers the lower back of the doll.

  1. Using mustard yarn, CO 26 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: Work garter stitch, knitting every row.
  3. Rows 5 to 24: Work in stockinette stitch.
  4. Row 25: K2, ssk, k18, k2tog, k2. You will have 24 sts.
  5. Row 26: Purl all sts.

  7. Rows 28 to 31: Work in stockinette stitch.
  8. BO all sts.

Sew the back panel to the body so it lines up with the front bib at the side seams. The back panel should sit under the cream sweater sleeves and should not pull tightly around the body.

Overall Straps

The straps cross over the shoulders and attach to the front with tiny buttons, just like the image.

  1. Make 2 straps. Using mustard yarn, CO 6 sts.
  2. Row 1: Knit all sts.

Sew the back end of each strap to the upper back panel. Bring each strap over the shoulder to the front bib. Angle them slightly outward so they match the gentle V shape in the image. Sew a tiny button to the front end of each strap.

Overall Legs With Side Cable

Make two overall legs. These are mustard tubes that cover the duck legs. Each leg has a cable running down the outer front side, similar to the raised cable visible in the photo.

  1. Using mustard yarn, CO 28 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1 to 4: Work k1, p1 rib around.
  3. Rnd 5: K8, p2, k8, p2, k8.
  4. Rnd 6: K8, p2, k8, p2, k8.
  5. Rnd 7: K8, p2, C4F, k4, p2, k8.
  6. Rnds 8 to 12: Work stitches as they appear.
  7. Rnd 13: K8, p2, k4, C4B, p2, k8.
  8. Rnds 14 to 18: Work stitches as they appear.
  9. Repeat Rnds 7 to 18 one more time.
  10. Rnd 31: K5, k2tog; repeat around. You will have 24 sts.
  11. Rnds 32 to 35: Knit all sts.
  12. BO all sts loosely.

Make the second leg the same way, but place the cable so it appears on the outer front side when worn. For the right leg, keep the cable after the first 10 sts. For the left leg, begin the cable panel after 2 sts so the cables mirror each other.

Sew the top of each overall leg to the lower body and to the bottom of the bib and back panel. Leave a small gap between the legs so the doll can sit naturally. The legs should hang straight down with a soft bend at the hip seam.

Small Knitted Book

The small book in the image rests near the duck. It is worked as a simple flat piece with cream pages and a textured cover.

  1. Using cream yarn, CO 16 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 10: Knit every row.

  8. Fold both pieces in half together.
  9. Sew along the fold with brown yarn to make a spine.

Add a few straight stitches across the cover to suggest a woven or plaid book cover. Keep the stitches small and soft so the book remains miniature.

Joining The Body, Head, Arms, And Legs

Before sewing, lay all pieces on a table and compare the proportions. The head should look larger than the body, giving the duck a cute doll-like shape. The legs should be long enough to hang below the body, and the arms should end around the upper thigh.

  1. Place the sweater-covered body upright. The ribbed collar should be centered at the top.
  2. Sew the head to the body using green yarn near the head and cream yarn near the collar if needed.
  3. Use a ladder stitch around the neck opening. Sew through the head base and the body neck edge several times for strength.
  4. Angle the head very slightly forward so the duck appears to look gently toward the viewer.
  5. Sew each leg to the lower body with the feet facing forward.
  6. Keep a small gap between the legs so the overalls do not bunch.
  7. Sew the arms to the sides of the upper body, just below the head and collar line.
  8. Angle the arms downward at about 25 degrees. The sleeve tops should sit partly under the overall straps.

When attaching the arms, use pins first. The satchel strap will cross over the front, so the left shoulder needs to stay neat and smooth. The right arm should hang freely beside the satchel.

Facial Embroidery

The face is simple and gentle. The black eyes provide most of the expression, while the embroidered marks add the handmade detail seen in the image.

  • Use black embroidery thread to sew two short curved eyebrow marks above the eyes. Each mark should be about 3 stitches long.
  • Add two tiny cheek lines near the sides of the bill if desired. Keep them very subtle.
  • Do not add a mouth. The bill shape and nostril dimples create the duck expression.
  • Check that the eyes are even from the front and also from a slightly higher angle.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Place the beret on the head first, then position the daisy on the duck’s right side. Sew the daisy securely through the petals and center. The flower should sit slightly forward of the side seam so it is visible from the front.

Dress the doll with the satchel last. Lay the green strap diagonally from the left shoulder to the right hip. Sew the strap down with two tiny hidden stitches at the shoulder and one tiny stitch near the side of the bib. This keeps the satchel from sliding.

Check the overalls after the satchel is attached. The front cable should still be visible down the center. The buttons should sit evenly near the top corners of the bib. The leg cables should face outward and forward.

Place the apple basket and book beside the duck for display. They are not attached to the doll, but you can sew them to a knitted display mat if this doll will be used for photography or craft fair presentation.

Finishing Details For A Photo-Ready Look

  • Steam lightly: Hold steam near the overalls and sweater, but do not press the doll flat.
  • Shape the bill: Pinch the center gently to keep the nostril dimples visible.
  • Round the head: Roll the stuffed head softly between your hands to smooth any uneven areas.
  • Adjust the beret: Tilt the beret slightly to the duck’s left side and let the brim curve naturally.
  • Check the sandals: Make sure the red straps sit evenly over the golden feet.
  • Trim yarn tails: Hide all ends inside the doll or under accessories.

Care Notes

This knitted duck doll is best used as a decorative handmade item. Because it has small buttons, a satchel button, safety eyes, and tiny accessories, it is not recommended for children under three years old.

Spot clean with cool water and mild soap. Do not soak the doll, because soaking may soften the stuffing and distort the overalls, beret, sandals, and small accessories.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the doll upright or seated in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Long sunlight exposure can fade the green head, mustard overalls, red sandals, and blue beret. If the doll is displayed near a window, rotate it occasionally so one side does not fade faster than the other.

To remove dust, use a soft clean brush and move in the direction of the knitted stitches. For the bill, daisy, satchel, and sandals, use very gentle strokes so the small pieces do not loosen.

If a spot appears on the sweater or overalls, dampen a white cloth with cool water and a tiny amount of mild soap. Dab the area gently. Do not rub hard. After cleaning, dab again with plain cool water and let the doll air dry completely.

Do not machine wash, tumble dry, iron, bleach, or wring the doll. The accessories are small and shaped by hand, so rough washing can change the proportions. Keep the apple basket and book separate when cleaning the main doll.

For long-term storage, wrap the doll loosely in acid-free tissue or clean cotton fabric. Avoid sealed plastic bags in humid spaces. A breathable storage box helps protect the yarn while keeping the knitted texture fresh.
