Crochet Tutorial: Cozy Rabbit Burrows Cottage – Free Crochet Pattern

This cozy crochet play set recreates a rabbit burrows cottage with an open-front house, soft brown roof, warm string lights, living room furniture, garden rows, vegetables, flowers, tools, bees, a beehive, a wheelbarrow, and three sweet rabbits. The main rabbit wears a floral apron, the taller rabbit wears green overalls, and the small bunny carries a carrot beside the mossy cottage garden.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms. The set is worked mostly in continuous rounds for the rabbits and garden pieces, and in rows for the cottage panels, furniture, roof, sign, and wheelbarrow. Use tight tension so the pieces hold their sculpted shape.

The finished display is designed as a miniature crochet scene. The base is a shallow rectangular tray with a moss garden in front and an open cottage in the back. The cottage has cream walls, a caramel roof, a brown loft band, and a raised back panel that looks like an opened burrow lid.

Finished Size

  • Complete display: about 13 in wide, 10 in deep, and 12 in tall.
  • Cottage: about 8 in wide, 5 in deep, and 9 in tall with roof open.
  • Tall rabbit: about 5.5 in tall including ears.
  • Apron rabbit: about 5 in tall including ears.
  • Small bunny: about 3.25 in tall including ears.
  • Wheelbarrow: about 3.75 in long.

Materials

  • Sport weight cotton yarn in cream, tan, oatmeal, warm brown, dark brown, caramel, moss green, sage green, olive green, mint, white, gray, black, pink, red, yellow, orange, lavender, blue, and small flower colors.
  • 2.25 mm crochet hook for most pieces.
  • 2.75 mm crochet hook for the cottage panels and base moss.
  • Polyester stuffing.
  • Cardboard, plastic canvas, or firm felt for cottage walls, base, roof, sign, sofa backs, and wheelbarrow support.
  • 6 mm black safety eyes or embroidered eyes.
  • Black and dark brown embroidery thread.
  • Sewing needle, yarn needle, stitch markers, pins, scissors.
  • Optional warm white battery fairy lights with tiny bulbs.
  • Optional fabric stiffener for sign, tools, and vegetable stems.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • st: stitch
  • sts: stitches
  • FO: fasten off

Gauge and Construction Notes

For the cottage panels, 8 sc rows and 8 sc stitches should measure about 1 in with the 2.75 mm hook. For the rabbits, 9 sc rounds and 9 sc stitches should measure about 1 in with the 2.25 mm hook. Gauge is important because the furniture must fit inside the cottage.

Work amigurumi pieces in continuous spirals unless a row instruction says otherwise. Stuff the rabbits firmly but not so tightly that the stitches stretch. The cottage panels should be firm, flat, and square, so block them lightly before assembly.

The photo shows thick, visible crochet texture on the roof, walls, furniture, vegetables, and rabbits. To copy that look, keep stitches compact and avoid loose loops. Most panel edges are finished with one round of sc so the miniature scene has rounded, tidy borders.

Color Guide

  • Cottage walls: warm cream and light beige.
  • Roof and loft band: caramel brown, medium brown, and tan trim.
  • Floor and garden: moss green, olive green, dark green, and brown.
  • Rabbits: oatmeal, taupe, and cream with blush pink ear centers.
  • Furniture: rust orange armchair, sage green sofa, gray fireplace, tan table, pale blue cups.
  • Garden items: orange carrots, yellow root vegetables, green cabbages, red radishes, lavender flowers, white sign.

Base Tray and Moss Garden

Wooden-Look Rectangular Base

Use dark brown yarn and the 2.75 mm hook. This base forms the shallow tray seen under the whole cottage and garden. Crochet tightly and insert cardboard before closing if you want a display-ready piece.

  1. Ch 47.
  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. 46 sts.
  3. Rows 2-30: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. 46 sts.
  4. Border Round 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around the rectangle, placing 3 sc in each corner. Join with sl st.
  5. Border Round 2: Ch 1, BLO sc around for a raised tray lip. Join.
  6. Border Round 3: Ch 1, sc around. Join and FO.

Cut cardboard slightly smaller than the base. Make a second rectangle exactly the same but without Border Round 3. Place cardboard between the two pieces and sew the edges together through the inside loops. This creates a firm, wooden-looking display tray.

Moss Ground Cover

Use moss green, olive, and dark green held in random short sections. Work loosely over the top of the base so the garden looks uneven and natural.

  1. Ch 43.
  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc across. Turn. 42 sts.
  3. Rows 2-24: Ch 1, sc, ch 2, sl st in next st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st; repeat across in a random rhythm. Turn each row.
  4. Final Edge: Sc around, but add random ch-3 loops every 5-7 sts to imitate moss strands.

Sew the moss panel to the front two-thirds of the base. Leave the back rectangle smooth where the cottage will sit. Add extra loose chain vines in dark green and stitch them across the garden surface.

Open Cottage Structure

Back Wall

The cottage is built like a small open box. The back wall is cream with a textured stitch surface. Use cream yarn and the 2.75 mm hook.

  1. Ch 35.
  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. 34 sts.
  3. Rows 2-34: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. 34 sts.
  4. Border: Sc around the panel, placing 3 sc in each corner. Join and FO.

Cut a piece of plastic canvas the same size as the panel. Sew or whipstitch the crochet panel around it. Keep the panel flat because the fireplace, pictures, window, and sofa will be attached to this wall.

Side Walls

Make two side walls in cream. They angle slightly outward in the photo, giving the cottage a soft open dollhouse shape.

  1. Ch 22.
  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. 21 sts.
  3. Rows 2-28: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. 21 sts.
  4. Border: Sc around, placing 3 sc in each corner. FO.

Insert plastic canvas into each side wall. Join each side wall to the back wall by whipstitching through the inner edge only. Angle the side walls about 10 degrees outward toward the front, matching the open cottage shape in the image.

Interior Floor

Use tan yarn for the cottage floor. It should sit behind the garden and inside the cottage walls.

  1. Ch 35.
  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. 34 sts.
  3. Rows 2-18: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. 34 sts.
  4. Border: Sc around with tan. FO.

Sew the floor to the base behind the moss garden. Then sew the bottom edges of the cottage walls to the back and sides of this floor, keeping the front fully open.

Brown Loft Band

The photo shows a warm brown horizontal band above the living room, just below the roof edge. Use caramel brown yarn.

  1. Ch 35.
  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. 34 sts.
  3. Rows 2-8: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. 34 sts.
  4. Border: Sc around with dark brown. FO.

Sew this band across the upper front of the back wall, about 2.25 in below the roof hinge. Leave the bottom edge slightly raised so warm fairy lights can be tucked just beneath it.

Open Roof Lid

The roof is the large caramel-brown panel standing upright in the back. It has dense texture and a rounded tan edge.

  1. With caramel brown and 2.75 mm hook, ch 39.
  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. 38 sts.
  3. Rows 2-30: Ch 1, BLO sc across. Turn. 38 sts.
  4. Border Round 1: Sc around with caramel brown, placing 3 sc in each corner.
  5. Border Round 2: Switch to tan, reverse sc around for a rope-like edge. FO.

Insert firm plastic canvas. Sew the lower long edge of the roof to the top back of the cottage so it stands open like a hinged lid. Add two short tan side roof flaps by crocheting two strips: ch 6, sc across for 27 rows, border with sc, and sew one down each upper side wall.

  3. Border: Sc around with cream, placing 3 sc in each corner. FO.

Positioning Guide for Photo Accuracy

Place the apron rabbit on the left front side, standing beside the small flower basket and the stool with a blue teapot. Her ears should be tall and slightly open, and her apron should face the garden rows.

Place the tall rabbit on the right side near the lavender pot and wheelbarrow. His green overalls should face forward. Angle one arm outward so he looks like he is watching over the garden.

Place the small bunny in the center-right garden path, between the adult rabbits, with the carrot against the chest. The bunny should be shorter than the vegetable rows and stand close to the cabbages.

Arrange the vegetable rows across the front center: orange carrots on the left, yellow root vegetables next, cabbages in the middle, and red radishes on the right. Leave moss visible between every row so the garden looks natural.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check each rabbit face before final sewing. The eyes should be level, the muzzle centered, and the ears balanced. Embroider the noses with very small stitches so the rabbits stay gentle and handmade rather than overly bold.

  • Add whiskers after the heads are attached, using dark brown thread.
  • Sew the heads securely through at least two rounds of stitches.
  • Use hidden stitches to keep clothing from sliding.
  • Trim all yarn tails and tuck them inside the nearest stuffed piece.
  • Add extra moss chains around any visible joins on the base.

Care Notes

This crochet cottage is best used as a decorative play set. If you add real fairy lights, remove the battery unit before cleaning. Keep small vegetables, bees, and cups away from very young children because they are tiny handmade pieces.

  • Spot clean with a damp cloth.
  • Do not machine wash the cottage structure.
  • Let pieces air dry completely before storing.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight to protect the yarn colors.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Cottage walls are firm and standing at matching angles.
  • Roof lid is upright with tan edging visible.
  • String lights are evenly spaced across the brown loft band.
  • Furniture fits inside without covering the fireplace.
  • Garden rows are arranged by color and height.
  • Rabbit outfits match the scene: floral apron, green overalls, and small carrot bunny.
  • Sign reads Rabbit Burrows and leans slightly back.
  • Wheelbarrow, hive, bees, lavender pot, tools, and flowers are all attached securely.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Use a soft makeup brush or clean paintbrush to dust the roof, moss, vegetables, and furniture. Brush in the direction of the stitches, not against them. This keeps the texture neat and prevents fuzzy yarn from lifting.

For deeper cleaning, dampen a white cloth with cool water and gently press the stained area. Do not rub the embroidered faces, sign lettering, or flower knots. Let the piece dry flat in a shaded, airy place.

Store the cottage inside a box that is taller than the open roof. Add tissue paper around the rabbits and wheelbarrow so the ears and handles do not bend. Keep the battery lights separate if the display will be stored for a long time.
