This crochet play set recreates the cozy woodland scene shown in the photo: a red-and-white spotted mushroom cottage, soft green meadow base, flowing blue yarn river, pebble border, stepping-stone path, tiny mushrooms, sunflowers, hanging lanterns, a picnic blanket with treats, two little cream mice, and one dressed storybook woodland friend wearing a mushroom cap.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Skill Level
Advanced beginner to intermediate. Most pieces use single crochet in continuous rounds, simple shaping, surface sewing, and small appliques. The play set looks detailed, but it is built from many small, simple parts.
Finished Size
- Meadow base: about 16 in wide x 12 in deep.
- Mushroom cottage: about 8.5 in tall including cap and chimney.
- Small mice: about 3.5 in tall.
- Storybook mouse: about 4.5 in tall with mushroom hat.
- Sunflowers: about 2.5 to 3 in tall.
Materials
- Worsted weight cotton or cotton-blend yarn in grass green, light green, sky blue, cream, red, white, tan, brown, dark brown, yellow, gold, pink, gray, pale blue, pale lavender, and small amounts of black.

- 3.5 mm crochet hook for the meadow base and river texture.
- Fiberfill stuffing.

Abbreviations
- MR: magic ring
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
- dec: single crochet 2 stitches together
- BLO: back loop only
- FLO: front loop only
- FO: fasten off
- st/sts: stitch/stitches
- R: round or row
Gauge and Notes
For the amigurumi pieces, 7 sc x 7 rounds should measure about 1 in square with a 3.0 mm hook. Exact gauge is less important than making dense stitches so stuffing does not show.
Work most amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join. Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round. Stuff gradually and firmly, especially the cottage body, mouse heads, and mushroom cap.
The photographed play set has a handmade, rounded look. Keep the stuffing even but not hard. The mushroom cottage should be sturdy, with the body slightly tapered and the cap wide, domed, and gently overhanging the walls.
1. Meadow Base
The base is a rounded rectangle in green with a raised edge. It supports the cottage, river, picnic area, flowers, pebbles, and figures.

For a flatter display base, cut a matching oval rectangle from plastic canvas and sew it under the base with long whip stitches. Keep the stitches hidden under the green border.

River Texture Strands

- Place the storybook mouse on the right side of the cottage, near flowers and grass.
- Add mushrooms around the cottage base, especially near the door and right side.
- Add lantern branches behind the picnic and cottage areas.
- Finish with stones, tiny flowers, and grass tufts to cover empty spaces.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Sew the heads to the bodies with firm stitches around the neck opening. Add extra stitches at the back of each head so the figures do not wobble. Attach ears symmetrically, then sew hats or accessories last.
Embroider eyes with small black vertical stitches for the same gentle handmade expression shown in the image. Add a tiny brown nose, short whiskers, and a soft smile if desired. Keep faces minimal and sweet.
Care Notes
- Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash if the play set contains cardboard, plastic canvas, pipe cleaners, or glued details.
- Reshape the mushroom roof and figures while damp.
- Let all pieces air dry completely before storing.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- Mushroom cottage: cream body, red spotted roof, chimney, door, and windows attached.
- Meadow: green base, blue river, pebbles, stepping stones, flowers, and grass tufts complete.
- Characters: two small mice and one dressed storybook mouse finished.
- Accessories: picnic blanket, basket, food, book, mushrooms, sunflowers, and lantern branches added.
- Final look: pieces are balanced, soft, rounded, and arranged like the photographed play set.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Store the play set flat in a breathable cotton bag or display box. Avoid direct sunlight for long periods, because red, blue, and green yarns may fade over time.
If dust collects on the cottage roof or flowers, use a soft dry brush. For deeper cleaning, dab gently with a damp cloth and press with a towel to remove moisture.
Check sewn-on pieces occasionally, especially lanterns, pebbles, and tiny foods. Reinforce loose pieces with matching yarn before giving the set to a child.
