Crochet Tutorial: North Pole Skating Gazebo – Free Crochet Pattern

This North Pole Skating Gazebo is a detailed winter crochet diorama with a round green snowy base, an oval blue ice rink, a white column gazebo, a deep green roof, a snowy roof cap, a gold star topper, hanging bells, glowing-style garland, tiny skaters, a snowman, fox, penguin, tree, sled, candles, bench, piano, lamp post, and many small Christmas accessories.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Full base diameter: about 14 inches across when made with DK yarn and a 2.5 mm hook.
  • Gazebo height: about 9 inches from base to top star.
  • Ice rink: about 8 inches wide and 5.5 inches deep.
  • Mini animals: about 2.5 to 3 inches tall.
  • Gazebo roof: about 7.5 inches across at the widest lower edge.

Skill Level

Intermediate to advanced beginner. This project uses basic amigurumi shaping, flat crochet pieces, surface crochet, simple embroidery, and hand sewing. The details are small, but each section is built from clear rounds and rows, so patient beginners can complete it successfully.

Materials

  • DK weight cotton or cotton blend yarn in emerald green, dark green, white, light blue, gray, tan, beige, brown, red, black, orange, gold, cream, pale pink, teal, and small amounts of assorted colors.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook for main pieces.
  • 2.0 mm crochet hook for small appliques, stars, bells, and facial details.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Cardboard, plastic canvas, or thick felt for the round base and gazebo floor support.
  • Six thin dowels, pipe cleaners, or floral wires for strengthening gazebo columns.
  • Black safety eyes, 4 mm and 5 mm, or black embroidery thread.
  • Yarn needle and sewing pins.
  • Small amount of gold thread or fine yarn for hanging bell cords.
  • Optional: warm white embroidery thread for tiny light dots along the roof edge.
  • Optional: craft glue only for hidden support pieces, not for the visible crochet finish.

Abbreviations in US Terms

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • st: stitch
  • sts: stitches
  • FO: fasten off

Gauge

Using a 2.5 mm hook and DK yarn, 24 sc and 26 rows should measure about 4 inches. Exact gauge is not critical for decorative pieces, but tight stitches are important. Use a smaller hook if stuffing shows through your work.

General Notes

  • Work amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join.
  • Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of every round.
  • Stuff small parts firmly but do not overstuff flat items such as the rink, roof, and base.
  • Leave long tails for sewing whenever a piece will be attached later.
  • For a stable gazebo, insert wire, dowels, or pipe cleaners inside the six white columns.
  • All decorative pieces are sewn on after the main base and gazebo are complete.

Large Round Green Base

The base is a flat circular mat in emerald green. It holds the ice rink, gazebo, characters, sign, sleigh, tree, lamp post, candles, and snowflakes. To match the image, keep the surface smooth and wide, with the gazebo placed slightly toward the back center.

Green Base Rounds

  1. With emerald green, make MR, 6 sc in ring. Do not join. 6 sts
  2. Inc in each st around. 12 sts

Cut a cardboard or plastic canvas circle slightly smaller than the crochet base. Make a second identical green circle if you want a thick base. Place the support between the two circles and sew the edges together using whip stitch. If you make one layer only, sew the support underneath with hidden stitches.

Raised Green Outer Edge

  1. Join emerald green at the back of the base. Ch 1, work 198 sc around the outer edge. Join with sl st.
  2. Ch 1, BLO sc around. Join with sl st.
  3. Ch 1, sc around again. Join, FO, and weave in ends.

Oval Ice Skating Rink

The rink sits in the front center and overlaps the gazebo floor visually. It is light blue with a gray stone border. The oval shape is made by crocheting around a foundation chain, then building even increases at both ends.

Light Blue Oval

  1. With light blue, ch 31.
  2. Round 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 28 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Working on the opposite side of the chain, sc in next 28 ch, 2 sc in last ch. 62 sts
  3. Round 2: Inc, sc 28, inc in next 3 sts, sc 28, inc in next 2 sts. 68 sts
  4. Round 3: Sc 1, inc, sc 28, repeat sc 1, inc three times, sc 28, repeat sc 1, inc twice. 74 sts
  5. Round 4: Sc 2, inc, sc 28, repeat sc 2, inc three times, sc 28, repeat sc 2, inc twice. 80 sts

  9. Round 8: Sc around. 92 sts
  10. Round 9: Sl st around loosely to create a smooth final edge. FO.

Gray Stone Rink Border

The border in the image looks like rounded gray stones around the rink. This is made with small puff-like bumps. Keep them close together so the rink looks framed and slightly raised.

  1. Join gray yarn to any stitch on the edge of the blue oval.
  2. Ch 1, sc in same st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st.
  3. Repeat the 5-stone sequence around the oval edge. Adjust the last repeat with sc if needed.
  4. Join with sl st and FO. Sew the border neatly to the green base so it does not curl.

Ice Lines

  • With pale blue or white thread, surface crochet three curved lines across the rink.
  • Keep the lines very subtle, about one row apart, so the rink still looks smooth.
  • Use short straight stitches near the rabbits’ feet to suggest skate marks.

Gazebo Floor Platform

The gazebo floor is a light gray raised hexagon-like platform behind the rink. In the photo, it has a tidy stair step at the front, six white posts, a piano and bench inside, and a red seat on the left side.

Gray Platform

  1. With light gray, ch 35.
  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Ch 1, turn. 34 sts
  3. Rows 2-24: Sc across. Ch 1, turn. 34 sts
  4. Row 25: Sc across. FO.
  5. Work one round of sc evenly around the rectangle, placing 3 sc in each corner. Join and FO.

Cut a matching rectangle from plastic canvas. Sew or tack it under the crochet platform. Place the platform behind the blue rink so the front edge sits slightly under the gray rink stones. Sew securely to the green base.

Front Steps

  1. First step: With gray, ch 26. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Ch 1, turn. Work 4 rows total. FO.
  2. Second step: With gray, ch 22. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Ch 1, turn. Work 3 rows total. FO.
  3. Edge each step with darker gray sl sts.
  4. Sew the smaller step on top of the larger step, then sew both to the front of the gazebo platform.

Six White Gazebo Columns

The gazebo has six tall white posts. They are thick, straight, and evenly spaced around the platform. The front two posts frame the rink. The back posts support the roof and make the gazebo look open and airy.

  1. With white, make MR, 6 sc in ring. 6 sts
  2. Round 2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts
  3. Rounds 3-34: Sc around. 12 sts
  4. Insert a dowel, pipe cleaner, or floral wire. Add a tiny amount of stuffing around it if needed.
  5. Round 35: BLO sc around to create a top rim. 12 sts
  6. Round 36: Sc around. FO, leaving a long tail.

Make six columns. Sew them to the platform in a hexagon arrangement: two front columns, two side columns, and two back columns. Keep the columns vertical. Pin them first, then sew around each bottom edge several times.

Column Top Caps

  1. With white, make MR, 6 sc in ring.
  2. Round 2: Inc around. 12 sts
  3. Round 3: Sc 1, inc; repeat around. 18 sts
  4. Sl st around and FO.

Make six caps and sew one to the top of each column. These caps give the roof a secure place to sit and match the rounded white tops visible under the green roof edge.

Deep Green Gazebo Roof

The roof is a shallow cone with six visible panels. It is dark green, slightly ribbed, and wide enough to overhang the columns. The white snow cap sits at the top, with a gold star standing upright.

Make three simple snowflakes and two tiny snowflakes. Sew them to the green base and near the rink edge, leaving some space between each one so the base does not look crowded.

  • For small snow piles, use white yarn and make MR 6, inc to 12, then sl st around.
  • Sew one snow mound under the sign.
  • Sew one near the lamp post.
  • Sew one near the candles and tree.

Assembling the Gazebo Structure

  2. Pin the six white columns around the platform. Check that all columns stand straight.
  3. Sew each column base down using small tight stitches around the bottom edge.
  4. Place the roof over the columns. The lower roof edge should slightly overhang the caps.
  5. Sew the roof to each column cap. Add extra stitches through the hidden underside of the roof for stability.
  6. Sew the snow cap, roof patches, star, garland, bells, lights, and hanging stars before adding the smallest figures underneath.

Placing the Main Scene Details

Set the two skating rabbits on the blue rink first. The brown rabbit goes slightly left of center, and the white rabbit goes slightly right of center. Their bodies should face forward, with their skate blades touching the ice.

Place the snowman, lamp post, and sign together on the left side of the green base. This creates the “Skate & Sing” entrance corner. The lamp post should be behind the snowman but still visible.

Place the fox, tree, candles, and log on the right side. The fox holds the songbook and faces inward toward the gazebo and rink. The Christmas tree stands behind the fox, with candles slightly in front.

Place the penguin at the front right beside the red sled. The sled should angle slightly toward the rink, with its pull rope curving forward. Add the cookie box and cocoa cup inside the sled.

Place the white skates on the front left and the tan toboggan near the lower center edge of the rink. Scatter snowflakes around open spaces on the green base to balance the full winter scene.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  • Use black embroidery thread for all small eyes if safety eyes are too bulky.
  • Add tiny pink cheek stitches to the white rabbit and optional blush to the fox.
  • Keep mouths very small: one short vertical stitch or a tiny V shape is enough.
  • Secure every figure with several stitches through the feet or lower body.
  • Check the gazebo from the front view before tying final knots.
  • Trim loose yarn ends carefully and hide all tails inside nearby stitches.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only with a damp cloth and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash because the gazebo columns, roof, and support pieces can bend.
  • Keep away from direct heat and strong sunlight.
  • If displayed seasonally, store it in a box with tissue paper around the star and roof bells.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Green round base is flat and firm.
  • Blue rink is centered at the front with gray stone edging.
  • Gazebo platform, six columns, and roof are stable.
  • Roof has snow cap, three snow patches, gold star, bells, garland, hanging stars, and light dots.
  • Bench, piano, teddy, rabbits, snowman, fox, penguin, tree, sled, candles, sign, lamp post, skates, toboggan, berries, and snowflakes are all attached.
  • All faces are embroidered neatly and all yarn tails are hidden.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, lift the diorama from the bottom base with both hands. Do not pick it up by the roof, star, columns, animals, or hanging bells. Small decorations are secure when sewn well, but they can loosen if pulled.

For dust, use a soft makeup brush or a clean paintbrush. Brush gently around the roof panels, bells, tree ornaments, and tiny figures. Avoid strong vacuum suction because it may pull the stitches or bend the roof trim.

For storage, wrap the gazebo loosely in acid-free tissue paper. Place extra padding around the star topper, lamp post, and Christmas tree. Store the piece upright in a dry container so the roof and columns keep their shape for many winter seasons.
