This cheerful knit blue owl has a rounded head and body, white face patches, bright blue eyes, a tiny golden beak, pointed ear tufts, soft wings, striped green garden overalls, sandals, a straw-style hat, a small flowered shoulder bag, a butterfly, and miniature garden tools. The finished toy is designed as a detailed display plush with many small handmade accents.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Finished Size
- Finished owl height: about 9 in / 23 cm from feet to ear tips.
- Body width: about 4.25 in / 11 cm across the widest part.
- Hat diameter: about 3.5 in / 9 cm.
- Bag height: about 1.5 in / 4 cm, not including handle.
- Skill level: confident beginner to intermediate, because the shaping is simple but the details are layered.
Materials
- DK weight yarn in sky blue for head, body, wings, tail, feet, and ear tufts.
- DK weight yarn in white for face patches and chest feather section.
- DK weight yarn in leaf green for legs, cuffs, straps, and garden overalls.
- DK weight yarn in medium brown for thin overall stripes and tool handles.
- DK weight yarn in tan or straw beige for hat, sandals, bag, and bag strap.
- Small amounts of golden yellow for beak and butterfly center.
- Small amounts of orange for butterfly wings.
- Small amounts of gray for garden tool heads.
- Embroidery yarn or scrap yarn in pink, yellow, blue, green, and cream for flower details.
- Two 14 mm blue safety eyes, or black safety eyes with knitted blue rings.
- Two tiny tan buttons, about 6 mm, for overall straps.
- Fiberfill stuffing.
- US size 3 / 3.25 mm double-pointed needles, or size needed for a firm fabric.
- US size 2 / 2.75 mm needles for straps, tiny accessories, and tighter detail pieces.
- Tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors, pins, and removable row markers.
Gauge
Gauge is not critical, but the knitted fabric must be firm enough to hide stuffing. Aim for about 6 stitches and 8 rounds per inch in stockinette worked in the round with DK yarn and US size 3 needles.
If your stitches look loose, go down one needle size. If your toy feels stiff and difficult to shape, go up one needle size. The owl in the image has a smooth, plush fabric with visible but compact knit stitches.

Pattern Notes
The owl is knitted mostly in the round from the bottom upward. The body and head are one continuous stuffed form, giving the toy the plump rounded silhouette shown in the image. The face patches, overalls, wings, sandals, hat, bag, butterfly, and tools are knitted separately and sewn on.
Use tight seaming and gentle stuffing. The body should be full, but not stretched. Shape the head with extra stuffing at the cheeks and forehead so the white eye patches sit slightly raised and round.
For clean color changes, twist the yarns together at the back of the work. When making the striped overalls, carry the unused color loosely inside the round so the fabric does not pucker.
Main Owl Body and Head
Feet-to-Head Base Shape
Work in the round with sky blue yarn. This piece starts at the lower body, widens into the belly, narrows at the neck, then expands into the round head. Stuff as you go, adding more stuffing before closing the top.

White Chest Feather Panel
The white feather area begins below the face and blends into the upper chest. It is a separate oval panel sewn to the front so the color stays clean and bright.
- With white yarn, CO 8 sts. Work flat.
- Row 1: K across.
- Row 2: P across.
- Row 3: K1, kfb, K4, kfb, K1. 10 sts.
- Row 4: P across.

- Row 20: P across.
- Row 21: K1, ssk, K4, k2tog, K1. 8 sts.
- BO all sts, leaving a long sewing tail.
Sew this panel to the front upper body, beginning just under the face patches and ending at the top edge of the overalls. Use small invisible stitches. Lightly stuff behind the center if you want a soft feathered chest curve.
White Face Patches
The owl has two large white rounded eye patches that touch near the beak and sit like heart-shaped circles on the blue head. Make two identical patches.
- With white yarn, CO 8 sts and join in the round.
- Rnd 1: K around. 8 sts.
- Rnd 2: Kfb in every st around. 16 sts.
- Rnd 3: K around.
- Rnd 4: Repeat K1, kfb around. 24 sts.

- Rnd 9: K around.
- Rnd 10: Repeat K4, kfb around. 48 sts.
- Rnd 11: K around.
- BO loosely knitwise, leaving a long tail.
Flatten each patch into a smooth circle. Place the patches on the front of the head so they overlap slightly at the center. The top edges should sit high on the face, while the lower edges curve toward the white chest panel. Sew around the outside edge only.
Blue Eye Rings and Eyes
The image shows glossy dark eyes with bright blue rims. You can use blue safety eyes or create blue knitted rings around black safety eyes.
- For each blue ring, use blue yarn and CO 18 sts on small needles.
- Row 1: K across.
- Row 2: P across.
- Row 3: K across.
- BO all sts. Curve the strip into a small ring and sew the short ends together.
- Place one ring at the center of each white face patch.
- Insert the safety eye through the ring and patch before final sewing, or sew the ring around an already attached eye.
The eyes should sit level with each other and slightly wide apart. Leave enough white visible around the rings so the owl keeps the bright, alert look shown in the picture.
Beak
The beak is small, golden, and vertical, placed between the white eye patches.
- With golden yellow yarn, CO 6 sts. Work flat.
- Row 1: K across.
- Row 2: P across.
- Row 3: K1, ssk, k2tog, K1. 4 sts.
- Row 4: P across.
- Row 5: SSK, k2tog. 2 sts.
- Row 6: P2tog. 1 st.
- Cut yarn and pull through the final st.
Fold the small triangle slightly down the center so it forms a raised beak. Sew it vertically between the eyes, with the point facing downward.
Ear Tufts
The owl has two pointed blue ear tufts angled upward and outward. They should look soft, slightly triangular, and attached to the top corners of the head.
- Make 2. With sky blue yarn, CO 14 sts. Work flat.

- Row 10: P across.
- Row 11: K1, ssk, k2tog, K1. 4 sts.
- Row 12: P across.
- Row 13: SSK, k2tog. 2 sts.
- Row 14: P2tog. 1 st.
- Cut yarn and pull through.

Fold each tuft lengthwise with the knit side out. Sew the long edges together lightly, leaving the base open. Stuff only the base if needed. Sew to the head at a diagonal angle, with each point leaning outward.
Wings
The wings are long teardrop shapes in blue, attached along the sides of the body. They curve down toward the overalls and end near the hips.
- Make 2. With sky blue yarn, CO 8 sts. Work flat.
- Row 1: K across.
- Row 2: P across.
- Row 3: K1, kfb, K4, kfb, K1. 10 sts.

- Row 32: P across.
- Row 33: K1, ssk, k2tog, K1. 4 sts.
- BO all sts.
Steam lightly or shape with your hands. Sew the upper third of each wing to the side of the owl, leaving the lower section free so it hangs like a soft feathered wing.

- Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash if safety eyes, buttons, or embroidered details are attached.
- Press out extra water with a towel and reshape while damp.
- Air dry flat away from direct sunlight.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The head is round and slightly wider than the body.
- The white face patches are even and bright.
- The beak is centered between the eyes.
- The overalls have green and brown stripes with a flowered bib.
- The bag strap crosses the chest diagonally.
- The sandals, hat, butterfly, and tools are included for the full garden look.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Keep the owl in a dry place and avoid heavy handling of the small accessories. Use a soft brush to remove dust from the hat brim, overalls, and face patches. If the toy will be stored, wrap it loosely in tissue paper so the ear tufts, wings, and bag strap keep their shape.
For long-term display, keep the knitted owl away from strong sunlight to protect the blue, green, and tan yarn colors. Check the buttons, eyes, and tiny embroidered flowers occasionally, and tighten any loose threads with a tapestry needle.
