Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US English knitting terms. The giraffe is worked mostly in the round on double-pointed needles or with the magic loop method. Small accessories are worked flat and seamed. The finished doll is designed to sit with long dangling legs, just like the garden giraffe shown in the reference image.

The finished giraffe measures about 13 inches tall from the bottom of the red shoes to the tops of the brown horn tips. The head is large and rounded, the neck is slim and long, the body is smaller, and the legs are narrow with rounded feet.

Skill Level

  • Level: Advanced beginner to intermediate.
  • Main skills: Knit, purl, increase, decrease, knitting in the round, simple color changes, mattress stitch, embroidery, and light shaping.
  • Construction: Separate knitted pieces are stuffed firmly and sewn together.

Finished Size and Gauge

  • Finished height: About 13 inches tall.
  • Head width: About 4.25 inches across the cheeks.
  • Body width: About 3 inches across the shirt.
  • Gauge: 7 stitches and 10 rounds = 1 inch in stockinette stitch using sport weight yarn and US 2 needles.
  • Important: Gauge is less important than firm fabric. Use needles small enough so stuffing does not show through.

Helpful Notes Before You Begin

Stuff the head and muzzle firmly, because the face in the image is plump and rounded. The neck should be stuffed more tightly than the arms and legs so it supports the oversized head. The body should remain slightly soft, allowing the doll to sit naturally on a table edge.

The striped shirt is knitted directly as part of the upper body. The brown shorts are added below the shirt. The sleeves are small separate tubes, sewn to the sides at a gentle downward angle. The red shoes are made separately around the feet for a neat sandal shape.

Use golden tan yarn. Work in the round. The head is a tall oval with a slightly narrow top and wider cheek area.

Stuff the cactus lightly and sew it inside the pot. Add tiny white straight stitches for cactus spines if desired. Keep the stitches small so the accessory remains soft and safe.

Giraffe Spots and Face Color

Use dark brown yarn to add the giraffe markings. The image shows soft brown markings on the neck and a few curved lines near the top of the face. Keep the spots irregular, not perfectly round.

  • Stitch one small curved line down from the base of each ossicone toward the forehead.
  • Add one short dark brown line between the eyes at the top of the muzzle.
  • Work two dark brown neck spots using duplicate stitch over 4 to 7 stitches each.
  • Use pink yarn or textile-safe blush to create round cheeks on both sides of the muzzle.
  • Add two small pink embroidered cheek dashes above the larger blush circles.

Assembly Order

  1. Sew the stuffed neck to the top center of the striped body.
  2. Sew the head to the top of the neck, checking that the muzzle faces forward.
  3. Attach the ears to the sides of the head, angled outward.
  4. Attach the ossicones to the top of the head.
  5. Add the hair tuft between the ossicones.
  6. Sew the sleeves and arms to the sides of the shirt.
  7. Sew the legs to the underside of the shorts.
  8. Add the red sandals and bows to the feet.
  9. Place the strawberry bag strap diagonally across the shirt.
  10. Arrange the sunhat, watering can, and cactus beside the doll for the full garden scene.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the face from the front before fastening the final knots. The eyes should be tall, close together, and placed above the raised muzzle. The muzzle should be centered and softly stuffed. The embroidered mouth line should be vertical first, then curved gently across the lower muzzle.

Shape the head with your hands after stuffing. Press gently at the sides to make the cheeks round. Add blush last so it stays clean and even. Sew all accessories securely, especially the strap, shoes, ears, and horns.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if using safety eyes, buttons, or delicate embroidery.
  • Let the doll air dry flat on a towel.
  • Reshape the muzzle, ears, hat brim, and bag while damp.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The giraffe has a large tan head and pale raised muzzle.
  • The eyes are white ovals with black centers.
  • The ears are wide and leaf-shaped.
  • The ossicones have dark brown rounded tips.
  • The shirt has blue and white stripes with tiny flowers.
  • The shorts are warm brown and sit below the shirt.
  • The legs are long and tan with red bow sandals.
  • The strawberry bag crosses the body diagonally.
  • The blue sunhat has a pale trim and yellow flower.
  • The watering can and cactus complete the garden display.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished giraffe in a dry place away from strong sunlight. Long sunlight exposure may fade the blue hat, red shoes, and embroidered strawberries. If the doll is displayed on a shelf, dust it gently with a soft brush every few weeks.

For deeper cleaning, dab stained areas with a damp cloth instead of soaking the whole toy. Avoid rubbing the blush, flower embroidery, and strawberry stitches. After cleaning, support the neck and head while drying so the tall giraffe shape stays straight.

To preserve the accessories, keep the sunhat, watering can, and cactus in a small cloth bag when not displayed. If the bag strap stretches over time, shorten it with a small hidden stitch at the back shoulder.
