Lily-of-the-Valley Lace-Bell Bunny – Knitting

Lily-of-the-Valley Lace-Bell Bunny – Knitting

This sweet, vintage-inspired bunny set is designed to look exactly like the photo: a floppy-eared bunny in a soft sage dress and cloche hat, trimmed with lily-of-the-valley bells, plus tiny matching props (basket, bottle, bouquet) and a little hedgehog friend. If you love to shop for DK cotton yarn, safety eyes, fiberfill stuffing, and heirloom-style doll accessories, this project is a cozy weekend make with beautiful results.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Overview

You will knit a complete scene set: the bunny doll (cream), removable sage dress, removable sage cloche hat, a lily-of-the-valley sash (green vine with white bells), plus miniature accessories and a small hedgehog wearing a matching cape and hat.

The finished look depends on tight, even stitches and neat seaming. Choose needles smaller than the yarn label suggests so the stuffing does not show through.

Finished Measurements

  • Large bunny: about 9.5 in (24 cm) tall from feet to hat top (hat on), about 8.5 in (21.5 cm) without hat.
  • Dress hem width (laid flat): about 6 in (15 cm) with gentle A-line flare.
  • Hat brim diameter: about 4.5 in (11.5 cm).
  • Hedgehog: about 3 in (7.5 cm) tall.
  • Mini basket: about 1.5 in (4 cm) tall.

Skill Level

  • Confident beginner to intermediate (toy shaping, small parts, simple i-cord).
  • Patience with tiny flower details will make the set look photo-accurate.

Yarn and Colors

  • Main bunny (cream): DK weight cotton or cotton-blend, smooth, non-fuzzy.
  • Sage outfit: DK weight cotton in soft sage green.
  • White flowers: DK weight cotton in bright white.
  • Pale yellow centers: small amount of pale yellow (or light butter).
  • Hedgehog body: DK in warm brown.
  • Hedgehog spines: DK in deep brown, or a lightly fuzzy yarn for texture.
  • Bottle cork: small amount of tan or light brown.

Notions

  • US 2 (2.75 mm) and US 3 (3.25 mm) double-pointed needles or circular needle for magic loop.
  • Tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • Two 6 mm black safety eyes for bunny (or black yarn for embroidered eyes).
  • Two 4 mm black safety eyes for hedgehog (optional).
  • Black embroidery floss or yarn for noses and mouth.
  • Thin floral wire (optional) for bouquet stems if you want bendable stems.

Gauge

Gauge is not critical, but fabric must be dense. Aim for about 26–30 sts per 4 in (10 cm) in stockinette when knit in the round.

Abbreviations

  • k = knit
  • p = purl
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • rnd = round
  • RS/WS = right side/wrong side
  • kfb = knit front and back (increase 1)
  • k2tog = knit two together (decrease 1)
  • ssk = slip, slip, knit (decrease 1)
  • M1L/M1R = make one left/right (increase 1)
  • BO = bind off
  • CO = cast on
  • pm/sm = place marker/slip marker
  • i-cord = knitted cord worked with a few stitches

Construction Notes

  • The bunny is worked mostly in the round for a clean, seam-light finish.
  • Arms, ears, tail, shoes, dress, hat, flowers, and accessories are made separately and sewn on.
  • Stuff firmly as you go, using small bits of stuffing for smooth curves.
  • For the photo look, keep the face minimal: small oval eyes and a simple “Y” mouth.

Ears (make 2, cream)

The ears are long, flat, and softly curved. Knit flat for control, then seam neatly.

  1. CO 16 sts. Work flat in stockinette (k on RS, p on WS) for 2 rows.
  2. Row 3 (RS): kfb, k to last st, kfb. (18 sts)
  3. Row 4 (WS): p all sts.
  4. Repeat Rows 3–4 three more times. (24 sts)
  5. Work even in stockinette for 20 rows, keeping edges tidy.

  7. Row 2 (WS): p all sts.
  8. Repeat taper every 4th row (every other RS) until 14 sts remain.
  9. Work 10 more rows even for the narrow tip section.
  10. BO loosely. Fold ear lengthwise (WS together) and mattress seam from tip to base.
  11. Leave the base unseamed for 1 in (2.5 cm) so you can shape it when attaching.

Tail (cream)

The tail is a small plush nub, mostly hidden by the dress but important for the toy silhouette.

  1. CO 6 sts. Join in the round on DPNs or magic loop.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb around. (12 sts)

Mary Jane Shoes (make 2, cream)

The shoes in the photo are rounded with a subtle strap across the top and two tiny white flowers on each toe. These slip over the bunny’s feet and can be removed.

Shoe Base (each shoe, cream)

  1. CO 24 sts. Join in the round. pm for rnd start.
  2. Rnd 1–4: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 5: (k2, k2tog) around. (18 sts)

  5. Rnd 10: (k1, k2tog) around. (12 sts)
  6. Rnd 11: k all sts.
  7. Try on the bunny foot. The shoe should be snug.
  8. Rnd 12: (kfb, k1) around. (18 sts) This widens for the instep.
  9. Rnd 13–18: k all sts.
  10. BO loosely. Weave in ends. Make the second shoe.

Strap (each shoe, cream)

The strap sits across the top and is stitched down at both sides, creating the Mary Jane look.

  1. With RS facing, pick up 10 sts across the shoe opening, centered.
  2. Row 1 (WS): p all sts.
  3. Row 2 (RS): k all sts.
  4. Row 3 (WS): p all sts.
  5. BO. Stitch strap ends to the shoe sides so it arches slightly.

Sage Dress

The dress is the key visual: a fitted bodice with tiny cap sleeves, then a softly flared skirt. The photo shows subtle vertical “panel” lines, so we will add spaced purl columns down the skirt.

Dress Notes

  • Knit top-down in the round so the neckline sits smooth and neat.
  • Use the larger needle for a softer drape, but keep stitches even.
  • The skirt hem has a clean garter finish like the photo edge.

CO and Neckline (sage)

  1. CO 48 sts. Join in the round. pm for rnd start.
  2. Rnd 1–3: (k1, p1) around for a narrow ribbed neckline.
  3. Rnd 4: k all sts.
  4. Rnd 5: (k7, M1R) around. (54 sts)
  5. Rnd 6: k all sts.
  6. Rnd 7: (k8, M1R) around. (60 sts)
  7. Rnd 8–12: k all sts to settle the yoke.

Cap Sleeves Setup (sage)

We will form tiny sleeves by putting small groups of stitches on hold and casting underarm stitches.

  1. Mark sleeve sections: knit 10 (front), place next 10 on holder (sleeve 1), knit 20 (back), place next 10 on holder (sleeve 2), knit remaining 10 (front).
  2. Underarm CO: CO 4 sts over sleeve gap, knit back section, CO 4 sts over second gap. (48 sts on body)
  3. Rnd 1–4: k all sts. This creates the fitted bodice length.

Skirt Increase and Panel Lines (sage)

The skirt flares gently. Add six purl “panel” columns spaced evenly for the photo-like vertical lines.

  1. Rnd 5 (increase rnd): (k7, kfb) around. (54 sts)
  2. Rnd 6: Establish panel columns: work (k7, p1) around. (6 purl columns total)
  3. Rnd 7–10: Keep panels aligned: knit the knit sts, purl the panel sts each rnd.
  4. Rnd 11 (increase rnd): (k8, kfb) around, keeping panel stitch as p when you reach it. (60 sts)
  5. Rnd 12–18: Continue with 6 purl columns straight down, knitting other sts.
  6. Rnd 19 (increase rnd): (k9, kfb) around, maintaining the purl columns. (66 sts)
  7. Rnd 20–30: Work even with panel columns, creating a smooth A-line skirt.

Dress Hem (sage)

The hem in the photo looks slightly structured and crisp. Garter ridges give that clean edge.

  1. Rnd 31–34: p all sts (one band of reverse stockinette helps the hem sit flat).
  2. Rnd 35–40: k all sts for a garter-in-the-round effect by alternating:

Work these 6 rnds as: Rnd A: k all sts. Rnd B: p all sts. Repeat A/B three times total.

  1. BO loosely. Weave in ends.

Sleeves (sage, make 2)

The sleeves are short caps that sit neatly at the shoulder like the photo.

  1. Return 10 held sleeve sts to needles. Pick up 4 underarm sts. (14 sts)
  2. Join in the round. Rnd 1–4: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 5: (k5, k2tog) twice. (12 sts)
  4. Rnd 6–8: k all sts.
  5. Rnd 9: (k4, k2tog) twice. (10 sts)
  6. Rnd 10: k all sts.
  7. BO. Repeat for the second sleeve.

Sage Cloche Hat

The hat has a softly rounded crown with vertical rib texture and a gently flared brim. The photo shows a row of small flat blossoms across the front band and lily-of-the-valley bells clustered along the brim edges.

Hat Crown (sage)

  1. CO 8 sts. Join in the round. pm for rnd start.
  2. Rnd 1: kfb around. (16 sts)
  3. Rnd 2: k all sts.
  4. Rnd 3: (k1, kfb) around. (24 sts)
  5. Rnd 4: k all sts.
  6. Rnd 5: (k2, kfb) around. (32 sts)
  7. Rnd 6: k all sts.
  8. Rnd 7: (k3, kfb) around. (40 sts)
  9. Rnd 8: k all sts.
  10. Rnd 9: (k4, kfb) around. (48 sts)
  11. Rnd 10–22: Work a gentle rib like the photo: (k1, p1) around.

Hat Band and Brim (sage)

Switch to stockinette briefly, then increase to create a cloche brim that shades the eyes slightly.

  1. Rnd 23–25: k all sts.
  2. Rnd 26 (increase): (k7, kfb) around. (54 sts)
  3. Rnd 27–29: k all sts.
  4. Rnd 30 (increase): (k8, kfb) around. (60 sts)
  5. Rnd 31–33: k all sts.
  6. Rnd 34–38: Create a firm brim edge by alternating A/B like garter:

Work Rnd A: k all sts. Rnd B: p all sts. Repeat A/B until you complete 5 rnds total.

📌Thank you for reading the article

  1. BO loosely. Block brim lightly by shaping it with your fingers.

Lily-of-the-Valley Details

This section makes the set look exactly like the photo. You will knit a green vine, then knit tiny white bell flowers. You will also knit small flat blossoms with pale yellow centers for the hat band and bouquet.

Green Vine i-cord (sage)

Use i-cord for a clean cord that lies flat across the dress like the sash in the photo.

  1. CO 3 sts. Do not turn. Slide sts to the other end of needle, pull yarn snug across the back, and k3.
  2. Repeat until vine reaches the desired length.
  3. Sash vine length: about 9.5 in (24 cm) for shoulder-to-hip on the large bunny.
  4. Hanging branch vine: about 3.5 in (9 cm).

White Bell Flower (make 24–30, white)

Each bell is worked from the top (stem end) downward, leaving the bottom open. Keep them tiny and consistent for a clean cluster.

  1. CO 3 sts. Work i-cord for 4 rows to form the tiny stem.
  2. Increase rnd: kfb each st. (6 sts)
  3. Rnd 1: k all sts.
  4. Increase rnd: (k1, kfb) around. (9 sts)
  5. Rnd 2–3: k all sts.
  6. Increase rnd: (k2, kfb) around. (12 sts)
  7. Rnd 4–6: k all sts. This is the bell body.
  8. Picot-like rim (tiny scallop look): Rnd 7: (k2, yo, k2tog) around.
  9. Rnd 8: k all sts.
  10. BO loosely so the bell edge flares open. Do not stuff.
  11. Weave in ends inside the bell near the stem.

Attach Bells to the Sash (white + sage)

The sash in the photo has bells all along the vine, with a heavier cluster hanging near the lower right side. Make it by adding a short branch near the hip.

  • Lay the long vine diagonally from the bunny’s left shoulder to right hip.
  • Sew 10–12 bells evenly along the vine, stems pointing upward, bell openings facing outward.
  • At the hip area, stitch the short branch vine under the long vine at an angle.
  • Sew 8–10 bells densely along the branch so they hang in a vertical cluster.
  • Add 2–3 bells near the shoulder for the small clustered look.

Hat Brim Bell Clusters (white + sage)

The photo shows lily bells clustered on both sides of the brim, framing the face.

  • Make two short vines about 2.25 in (6 cm) each.
  • Sew 6–7 bells to each vine.
  • Stitch one cluster to the left brim edge and one to the right brim edge.
  • Angle them slightly downward so the bells “spill” off the brim.

Flat Blossom (make 10–14, white + pale yellow)

These are the small flat flowers with pale yellow centers seen on the hat band and in the bouquet.

  1. CO 10 sts (white). Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: (k1, yo) around. (20 sts)
  4. Rnd 3: (k2tog) around. (10 sts)
  5. BO, leaving a tail. Pull tail to gently cup the circle into a small flower.
  6. Center: with pale yellow, make 3 tiny straight stitches in the center, or sew on a tiny yellow knot of yarn.

Hat Band Blossoms (white + pale yellow)

The photo shows a neat row of blossoms across the front band, evenly spaced.

  • Sew 6 blossoms across the front of the hat, centered above the brim.
  • Space them about 0.5 in (1.25 cm) apart, edge to edge.
  • Keep centers aligned for a clean, “garden hat” look.

Mini Basket (sage)

The basket is a small cylinder with vertical texture and a simple handle. It sits to the bunny’s left in the photo.

Basket Base (sage)

  1. CO 24 sts. Join in the round. pm.
  2. Rnd 1–4: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 5–14: (k1, p1) around for ribbed sides.
  4. Rnd 15: k all sts.
  5. Rnd 16: (k2tog, k2) around. (18 sts)
  6. Rnd 17: k all sts.
  7. Rnd 18: (k2tog, k1) around. (12 sts)
  8. Rnd 19: (k2tog) around. (6 sts)
  9. Cut yarn, thread through, pull closed for the base. Turn basket right side out.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Basket Rim and Handle (sage)

  • Pick up and knit 24 sts around the top opening.
  • Work 2 rnds in stockinette for a firm rim, then BO loosely.
  • Handle: make a 3-st i-cord about 2.75 in (7 cm) long.
  • Stitch handle ends to opposite sides inside the rim.

Mini Bottle (sage + tan)

The bottle in the photo is a round, ribbed flask with a tan cork top. Keep it firmly stuffed so it holds its shape.

Bottle Body (sage)

  1. CO 6 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: kfb around. (12 sts)
  3. Rnd 2: k all sts.
  4. Rnd 3: (k1, kfb) around. (18 sts)
  5. Rnd 4: k all sts.
  6. Rnd 5: (k2, kfb) around. (24 sts)
  7. Rnd 6–12: (k1, p1) around for vertical rib texture.
  8. Rnd 13: (k2, k2tog) around. (18 sts)
  9. Rnd 14: k all sts. Stuff firmly.
  10. Rnd 15: (k1, k2tog) around. (12 sts)
  11. Rnd 16: (k2tog) around. (6 sts)

Cork Top (tan)

  1. Pick up 6 sts at the bottle top opening.
  2. Rnd 1–4: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 5: (k2tog) around. (3 sts)
  4. Cut yarn, thread through, pull closed. Weave in ends.

Flower Bouquet (white + pale yellow + sage)

The bouquet in the photo includes flat blossoms and a few bell flowers, bundled on long green stems with a pale wrap.

Stems (sage)

  • Make 8–10 i-cords (3 sts) each about 3.5–4 in (9–10 cm) long.
  • If you want bendable stems, knit i-cord around thin floral wire.
  • Keep ends long for tying and sewing flowers securely.

Attach Blossoms (white + pale yellow)

  • Make 8–10 flat blossoms.
  • Sew one blossom to the end of each stem, slightly cupping the petals upward.
  • Add pale yellow center stitches last so they stay visible.

Add Bell Flowers (white)

  • Make 5–7 bell flowers.
  • Sew 1–2 bells along a few stems, positioned lower than the blossom tops.
  • This creates the mixed “garden bouquet” look seen in the photo.

Bundle Wrap (white)

Wrap the stems together like the photo’s tied bundle.

  • Hold stems together and wrap with white yarn around the lower third.
  • Wrap 10–12 times, then tie a firm knot at the back.
  • Trim ends neatly or weave them into the wrap.

Small Hedgehog Friend

The hedgehog is a tiny companion with a beige face, brown body, darker back “spines,” plus a sage cape and a tiny matching hat.

Hedgehog Body (brown)

  1. CO 8 sts. Join in the round. pm.
  2. Rnd 1: kfb around. (16 sts)
  3. Rnd 2: k all sts.
  4. Rnd 3: (k1, kfb) around. (24 sts)
  5. Rnd 4: k all sts.
  6. Rnd 5: (k2, kfb) around. (32 sts)
  7. Rnd 6–16: k all sts for a plump oval body.
  8. Stuff firmly, shaping a rounded belly like the photo.
  9. Rnd 17: (k2, k2tog) around. (24 sts)
  10. Rnd 18: k all sts.
  11. Rnd 19: (k1, k2tog) around. (16 sts)
  12. Rnd 20: (k2tog) around. (8 sts)
  13. Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull closed. Weave in ends.

Hedgehog Face Patch (beige)

This creates the lighter snout and face area visible in the photo.

  1. CO 10 sts. Knit flat in stockinette for 8 rows.
  2. Row 9: k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. (8 sts)
  3. Row 10: p all sts.
  4. Row 11: k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. (6 sts)
  5. Row 12: p all sts. BO.
  6. Lightly stuff behind the patch before sewing for a gentle snout bump.

Hedgehog Spines Panel (deep brown)

If you have a slightly fuzzy yarn, use it here to mimic spines. Keep the panel narrow so the beige face remains visible.

  1. CO 14 sts. Work flat in garter stitch (k every row) for 18 rows.
  2. BO. This makes a textured strip that runs from head to back.
  3. Optional: add a few tiny looped stitches with a crochet hook for extra texture.

Hedgehog Ears (make 2, beige)

  1. CO 4 sts. Knit flat in garter for 4 rows.
  2. BO. Fold in half and stitch base to form a tiny curved ear.

Hedgehog Feet (make 2, brown)

  1. CO 6 sts. Join in the round. Knit 4 rnds.
  2. Stuff lightly. Cut yarn, pull closed. Leave tail for sewing.

Hedgehog Cape (sage)

The cape is a small shoulder wrap with a tie, matching the photo styling.

  1. CO 24 sts. Work flat.
  2. Row 1: k all sts.
  3. Row 2: p all sts.
  4. Repeat Rows 1–2 for 10 more rows (12 rows total).
  5. Shape the neck: BO 6 sts at start of next 2 rows. (12 sts remain)
  6. Work 4 more rows even. BO.

Add ties: make two short 3-st i-cords about 2 in (5 cm) each. Sew to the cape neck edges.

Hedgehog Tiny Hat (sage)

  1. CO 6 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: kfb around. (12 sts)
  3. Rnd 2: k all sts.
  4. Rnd 3: (k1, kfb) around. (18 sts)
  5. Rnd 4–8: (k1, p1) around.
  6. Rnd 9–10: k all sts.
  7. Rnd 11: (k2, kfb) around. (24 sts) for a tiny brim flare.
  8. Rnd 12: p all sts.
  9. Rnd 13: k all sts. BO loosely.

Placement Guide (Match the Photo)

  • Bunny ears: sewn at the sides of the head, starting slightly behind the eyes, hanging down past the shoulders.
  • Dress: hem sits just above the ankle ribbing, showing the “sock” texture.
  • Sash: begins near the left shoulder seam, crosses the bodice, and ends at the right hip with a heavier hanging cluster.
  • Hat blossoms: a neat front row of 6 blossoms centered above the brim.
  • Hat bell clusters: one cluster on each brim side, framing the face.
  • Shoe flowers: two flat blossoms on each toe, centered and slightly overlapping.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Sew ears to the head with the bases slightly cupped forward. Stitch arms to the body just below the neck so they angle down naturally. Add the tail centered on the lower back. Embroider a small “Y” mouth with black yarn: one short vertical stitch, then two angled stitches for the split. Keep it tiny and centered.

For the hedgehog, sew the beige face patch to the front top area, then stitch the spine panel along the back, overlapping edges slightly. Add tiny ears near the top corners of the face. Embroider a small black nose and a short mouth line beneath it.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid soaking the stuffing.
  • Let pieces air dry fully, reshaping hat brim and dress hem while damp.
  • Small parts may be a choking hazard; use embroidered eyes for very young children.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • All seams are tight and knots are secured inside the work.
  • Bunny stands balanced with shoes on and dress centered.
  • Sash bells are evenly spaced, with a heavier cluster at the right hip.
  • Hat blossoms are centered, and brim bell clusters match on both sides.
  • Accessories are firmly stitched and shaped (basket rim, bottle cork, bouquet wrap).

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For long-term keeping, store the set in a breathable cotton bag away from direct sunlight. If dust builds, use a soft makeup brush to gently clean between flower details. Avoid plastic bags for long storage, since trapped moisture can dull fibers. Re-shape the hat brim and bouquet stems after handling for the crisp photo look.
