Knitting Tutorial: Schnauzer Dog Amigurumi with Green Cardigan – Free Knitting Pattern

This knitted schnauzer dog amigurumi is designed as a detailed garden companion with a black-and-white face, fluffy eyebrows, a long beard, a green cardigan, brown shorts, sandals with tiny bees, a floral shoulder bag, and matching gardening accessories. The finished doll has the cozy look of handmade plush toys, knitted dog dolls, amigurumi animal gifts, cardigan doll outfits, nursery decor plushies, and collectible soft toy patterns. The construction uses small-circumference knitting, firm stuffing, shaped pieces, embroidery, and carefully sewn details to recreate the charming garden outfit shown in the image.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size and Style Notes

This pattern makes a standing schnauzer dog doll about 12 inches tall when worked with DK-weight yarn and 2.75 mm needles. The head is large and rounded, the muzzle is full and fluffy, the ears are tall and black, the body is dressed in a green cardigan over a cream shirt, and the legs are long enough to show white socks above green sandals.

The doll is knitted firmly so the stuffing does not show. Most pieces are worked in the round on double-pointed needles or with the magic-loop method. Small flat details, such as the cardigan fronts, flowers, bag flap, hat brim, and accessory pieces, are worked back and forth.

Skill Level

  • Level: Confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Main skills used: knitting in the round, increasing, decreasing, picking up stitches, simple color changes, mattress stitch, embroidery, i-cord, and sewing small pieces.
  • Best fabric: tight stockinette with very little stretch between stitches.
  • Important note: Count stitches after every shaping round. The look of the face depends on even shaping and careful placement.

Materials

  • DK-weight yarn in black: head top, ears, nose, eye patches, shoe lines, bee stripes.
  • DK-weight yarn in warm white: muzzle, beard, paws, lower legs, shirt, eyebrows.
  • DK-weight yarn in sage green: cardigan, sandals, straps, vines, flower stems.

  • Light gray yarn: watering can and metal tool heads.
  • 2.75 mm double-pointed needles or circular needle for magic loop.
  • 2.5 mm needles for tighter small accessories and flowers.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • Two 8 mm black safety eyes or black yarn for embroidered eyes.
  • Three tiny brown buttons, 6 mm wide, for the cardigan.
  • One tiny button, 5 mm wide, for the bag flap.
  • Tapestry needle, stitch markers, pins, scissors, row counter, and a small amount of black sewing thread if using safety eyes.

Gauge

  • Gauge in stockinette: 28 stitches and 38 rounds = 4 inches after firm stuffing.
  • Gauge for doll fabric: stitches should be tight enough that stuffing is hidden.
  • Needle adjustment: If gaps appear, go down to 2.5 mm needles.
  • Finished head width: about 3.4 inches across after stuffing.
  • Finished body width: about 2.5 inches across the cardigan area.

Construction Overview

The schnauzer is built from the feet upward for a stable standing shape. The shoes and lower legs are knitted first, then the shorts and body are joined above them. The head is knitted separately so the white muzzle, beard, eyebrows, black head panel, and pointed ears can be positioned cleanly before final assembly.

The cardigan is knitted as a separate garment and sewn onto the body. This makes the green jacket sit open at the front like the photo. The floral embroidery, buttons, bag, hat, tools, and watering can are added last so they remain crisp and visible.

Joining the Head and Body

Before sewing the head to the body, pin everything in place. The doll should have a large expressive head, compact torso, and slightly forward-facing feet. The cardigan should sit smoothly under the chin without covering the beard.

  1. Place the body upright on a flat surface.
  2. Position the head so the nose points forward and the beard falls over the upper cardigan.
  3. Use the long body tail to sew around the neck opening twice.
  4. Add extra stuffing at the neck if the head wobbles.
  5. Secure the head with a second round of stitches using black or white yarn where the seam is least visible.
  6. Pull gently after every few stitches to make the head sit firmly.

Attaching Arms

  • Height: Sew arms to the sides of the body just below the neck seam.
  • Angle: Point arms slightly downward and outward.
  • Paw position: White paws should rest beside the cardigan hem.
  • Stability: Sew around the arm top twice so the arms can hold their shape.
  • Sleeve look: The green sleeve should blend visually into the cardigan body.

Facial Shaping and Fur Texture

The schnauzer expression depends on the fluffy white areas. After the muzzle, cheeks, eyebrows, and beard are attached, brush only the white yarn sections. Do not brush the black head too much, because the photo shows a smoother black knitted skull and ears.

  1. Brush the eyebrows outward and upward.
  2. Brush the side cheeks outward toward the ears.
  3. Brush the muzzle downward and slightly to each side.
  4. Separate beard strands with your fingers.
  5. Trim only a little at a time.
  6. Keep the beard longest in the center and shorter near the jawline.

Outfit Detail Placement

Use pins to check all accessories before sewing. The cardigan flowers should sit low on the green fronts. The buttons should form a neat vertical line. The shoulder bag should cross diagonally from one shoulder to the opposite hip, with the bag sitting over the brown shorts and lower cardigan.

  • Cardigan front: Keep open so the cream shirt is visible.
  • Bag strap: Cross from the doll’s right shoulder to left hip, or reverse if it looks better on your finished doll.
  • Hat: Display beside the doll or place loosely on the head behind the flowers.
  • Tools: Position near one side for a garden scene.
  • Watering can: Place on the opposite side to balance the display.

Optional Internal Support

If the doll will be used as shelf decor, you may add a safe internal support. Do not use wire for toys intended for babies or pets. For display only, a short flexible stem can be inserted from the body into the neck before final closing.

  • Child-safe version: Use only yarn, stuffing, and embroidered eyes.
  • Display version: Add a covered craft stem inside the neck for stability.
  • Standing version: Add flat plastic canvas ovals inside the sandal soles before sewing them closed.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Sew the feet to the legs and make sure both soles sit flat.
  2. Sew the legs and body firmly so the doll stands straight.
  3. Attach the cardigan around the body, leaving the front open.
  4. Sew the arms at matching heights on both sides.
  5. Attach the head, checking that the nose is centered over the shirt opening.
  6. Sew on the ears at the upper left and right head corners.
  7. Add the side cheek panels, muzzle, nose, beard, and eyebrows.
  8. Place the head flowers between the ears.
  9. Attach the bag strap diagonally and sew the bag at hip height.
  10. Add embroidery to the cardigan, bag, sandals, and hat band.

Care Notes

  • Cleaning: Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Drying: Press gently with a towel and air dry flat.
  • Brushing: Re-fluff the eyebrows, cheeks, and beard with a clean toothbrush.
  • Storage: Keep away from direct sunlight to protect the green cardigan and floral colors.
  • Safety: Use embroidered eyes instead of safety eyes for young children.

  • The muzzle is large, rounded, and centered.
  • The black nose sits on the lower front of the muzzle.

  • The green cardigan has three buttons and small floral embroidery.
  • The brown shorts sit below the cream shirt and above the white socks.

  • The floral bag hangs diagonally across the body.
  • The hat, tools, and watering can are finished as matching garden accessories.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For best results, clean the doll gently by hand. Dip a soft cloth into cool water with a very small amount of mild soap, then dab the stained area without rubbing. Avoid soaking the entire doll because the stuffing may shift and the shaped muzzle may lose volume.

After cleaning, reshape the muzzle, beard, cardigan fronts, sandals, and ears while damp. Lay the doll flat on a dry towel in a shaded place. Turn the doll every few hours until completely dry. Do not place it in a dryer or near strong heat.

To preserve the garden accessories, store the hat, tools, and watering can beside the doll rather than pressing them under heavy objects. Keep the floral bag strap untwisted. If the beard becomes flat, separate the strands with your fingers and lightly brush only the white yarn.

When displayed long-term, place the schnauzer away from dust, direct sunlight, and damp rooms. A shelf, craft cabinet, or covered display box works well. Check sewn buttons and tiny decorations occasionally, especially if the doll is handled often.
