Knitting Tutorial: Red Fox in Autumn Cardigan – Free Knitting Pattern

This charming knitted red fox is designed as a seated woodland doll with a rounded rust-orange head, cream muzzle, pointed ears, slim legs, tiny dark paws, and a cozy autumn cardigan. The outfit includes green, cream, and rust stripes, small buttons, leaf appliqués, brown sandals, a textured crossbody pouch, a green ribbed hat with pom-pom, tiny mushrooms, and a miniature teapot for a complete forest picnic scene.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern creates a soft knitted fox doll with a large rounded head, small tapered body, long dangling legs, short rounded arms, and a layered outfit. The fox is knitted mostly in the round on double-pointed needles or magic loop, with flat pieces used for the cardigan bands, sandals, bag flap, leaf patches, mushrooms, and teapot details.

The finished fox is meant to look like the image: seated, gentle-faced, dressed in an oversized striped cardigan, with rusty-orange legs visible under the jacket. The cardigan has a deep forest green base, cream-and-rust Fair Isle style stripes, ribbed front bands, three small buttons, and small autumn leaf patches sewn near the lower fronts.

Use firm stuffing and a tight gauge so the toy holds its shape. The head should be larger than the body, the muzzle should be wide and softly rounded, and the ears should stand at a slight outward angle. The crossbody bag hangs from the fox’s left shoulder toward the front right hip.

Finished Size

  • Fox seated height: about 11 in from ears to sandal soles.
  • Head width: about 4.25 in across the cheeks.
  • Body length: about 4 in from neck to lower body.
  • Leg length: about 4.75 in from hip to foot.
  • Cardigan length: about 4.25 in from shoulder to hem.
  • Bag size: about 2 in wide and 2.25 in tall.
  • Hat height: about 2.25 in including pom-pom.

Skill Level

Intermediate beginner to intermediate. The shaping is simple, but the project includes color changes, small appliqués, seaming, embroidery, and careful assembly. A confident beginner can complete it by working slowly and checking stitch counts after every increase or decrease round.

Materials

  • Yarn A, rust orange: DK weight yarn, about 70 yd, for fox head, body, legs, tail color, and foot tops.
  • Yarn B, cream: DK weight yarn, about 35 yd, for muzzle, cheeks, inner ears, cardigan stripes, mushroom stems, and teapot highlights.
  • Yarn C, deep forest green: DK weight yarn, about 55 yd, for cardigan base and sleeves.
  • Yarn D, pale sage green: DK weight yarn, about 35 yd, for crossbody bag and hat.
  • Yarn E, warm brown: DK weight yarn, about 25 yd, for sandals, bag flower center, and teapot trim.
  • Yarn F, dark charcoal or black: small amount, for paws, nose, ear edging, and face embroidery.
  • Yarn G, copper brown: small amount, for cardigan stripes, mushrooms, and leaf patches.
  • Yarn H, soft beige: small amount, for teapot and mushroom cap dots.
  • Safety eyes: two 8 mm glossy black eyes.
  • Buttons: three 7 mm wooden buttons for cardigan, four tiny 6 mm buttons for sandals.
  • Stuffing: polyester fiberfill.
  • Needles: US 3, 3.25 mm double-pointed needles or circular needle for magic loop.
  • Needles for flat pieces: US 3 straight needles or the same circular needle used flat.
  • Notions: stitch markers, tapestry needle, pins, small scissors, row counter.

Gauge

Work at a firm toy gauge. In stockinette stitch, 24 stitches and 34 rounds should measure 4 in after light blocking. Gauge does not need to match exactly, but the fabric must be tight enough that stuffing does not show through.

If your fabric is loose, move down to US 2 needles. If your stitches are extremely stiff and hard to knit, move up only if the stuffing remains hidden. A firm gauge is especially important for the face, legs, shoes, and small mushrooms.

Important Construction Notes

The fox is knitted as separate shaped pieces and then assembled. The head is round and slightly wide at the cheeks. The cream muzzle is made as a separate oval patch so the color line matches the image cleanly. The body is smaller than the head and sits under the cardigan.

The cardigan is knitted flat from the lower back upward, with fronts and back joined in one piece at first. Sleeves are knitted separately in the round and sewn into the armholes. The stripe sequence is repeated across body and sleeves to create the autumn sweater effect.

The accessories are small but important. The hat sits beside the fox in the image, the bag hangs across the body, and the mushrooms and teapot complete the tabletop scene. These pieces make the finished project look like the full woodland display rather than only the fox doll.

Color Placement Guide

  • Head top and sides: rust orange.
  • Lower face and wide muzzle area: cream.
  • Nose: black, centered at the top of the cream muzzle.
  • Inner ears: cream triangles inside rust-orange outer ears.
  • Ear tips: dark charcoal embroidery along the upper outside edge.
  • Body and legs: rust orange, visible below the cardigan.
  • Paws: dark charcoal at hand tips.
  • Cardigan: deep green base with cream and copper rust stripes.
  • Sandals: warm brown straps and soles, small buttons on outer sides.
  • Bag: pale sage green with cable-like center texture, flower charm, and diagonal strap.

Head

Use rust orange yarn. Work in the round. Stuff firmly as you go, adding more stuffing before closing. The head should be rounded, full at the cheeks, and slightly flattened at the lower front where the muzzle patch will sit.

  14. Row 18: ssk, k6, k2tog. 8 sts.
  15. BO all sts, leaving a long sewing tail.

Pin the muzzle patch below the eyes, with its widest part across the cheeks. Sew around the edge using small whip stitches. Do not overstuff under this patch. It should sit smoothly and softly, not bulge outward too much.

Nose and Mouth Embroidery

  • Use dark charcoal yarn or embroidery floss.
  • Place the nose at the top center of the cream muzzle, about 2 rounds below the eye line.
  • Satin stitch a small horizontal oval about 0.45 in wide.
  • Bring one straight stitch down from the nose center for the mouth line.
  • Add two shallow curved smile stitches, one to each side, following the lower muzzle curve.
  • Keep the expression gentle and small. Large embroidery will change the fox’s soft look.

Sew the legs to the lower front of the body with a small gap between them. Angle them forward slightly so the fox sits naturally. The upper leg join is later hidden by the cardigan hem.

Arms

The arms are short and sleeve-covered, with dark paw tips visible. Make two. The upper section can be rust orange if you prefer a removable cardigan, but for the exact pictured effect, knit the paw tips dark and the arm sleeve section green.

  1. With dark charcoal yarn, CO 10 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1 to 4: k all sts.
  3. Change to deep forest green.

Sew arms to the sides of the body at the shoulder line. The sleeves should point slightly downward. Keep the dark paws visible below the cuff area, like small mitten tips.

Tail

The tail is partly hidden behind the fox, but a rust-orange tail tip can be seen near the right side in the image. Make it curved and rounded, then sew it to the back lower body so it peeks out beside the cardigan.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 8 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in every st around. 16 sts.

Sew the tail to the lower back body, slightly to the fox’s right side. Curve it so the cream tip points outward and the rust section rests behind the cardigan.

Autumn Cardigan

The cardigan is the visual centerpiece of the toy. It is green, slightly oversized, open at the front, and decorated with horizontal cream and rust stripes. It should look cozy and soft, with ribbed front bands and small buttons down one side.

  9. Rnd 31: k2tog around. 9 sts.
  10. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull closed, and secure.
  11. Fold brim upward about 0.6 in and tack it at four points.

Make a small pom-pom about 1 in wide using pale sage yarn. Trim it round, then sew it firmly to the top of the hat. Place the hat beside the fox or lightly tack it to the scene if making a display.

Tiny Mushrooms

Make three mushrooms in different sizes: one tall rust cap mushroom, one small rust cap mushroom, and one pale beige mushroom. These sit beside the fox on the table and add the autumn woodland detail.

Mushroom Stem, Make 3

  1. With cream yarn, CO 8 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1 to 6 for small stem, or Rnds 1 to 10 for tall stem: k all sts.
  3. Rnd next: k2tog around. 4 sts.
  4. Cut yarn, pull closed, and secure.
  5. Stuff very lightly with a tiny pinch of fiberfill.

Rust Mushroom Cap, Make 2

  1. With copper rust yarn, CO 6 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: kfb in every st around. 12 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: repeat k1, kfb around. 18 sts.
  4. Rnds 3 to 5: k all sts.

  3. Rnd 2: repeat k1, kfb around. 18 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: k all sts.
  5. Rnd 4: repeat k1, k2tog around. 12 sts.
  6. BO, leaving a sewing tail.

Sew each cap to a stem. Add tiny cream duplicate stitches to the rust caps if desired. For the image effect, keep the mushrooms small and grouped near the teapot, not attached to the fox.

Miniature Teapot

The tiny teapot is knitted in beige and soft taupe tones. It has a rounded body, short lid, curved handle, and small spout. This is an optional display accessory, but it helps match the full scene closely.

Teapot Body

  1. With beige yarn, CO 8 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb around. 16 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: repeat k1, kfb around. 24 sts.
  5. Rnds 4 to 10: k all sts.
  6. Rnd 11: repeat k2, k2tog around. 18 sts.
  7. Rnd 12: k all sts.
  8. Rnd 13: repeat k1, k2tog around. 12 sts.
  9. Stuff lightly.
  10. Rnd 14: k2tog around. 6 sts.
  11. Close and secure.

Teapot Lid

  1. With beige yarn, CO 10 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: k2tog around. 5 sts.
  4. Cut yarn, close, and sew to top of teapot.
  5. Add one small brown knot at the lid center.

Handle and Spout

  • Handle: CO 4 sts with beige yarn and knit 12 rows. BO and sew into a curved handle on one side.
  • Spout: CO 5 sts with beige yarn and knit 5 rows. Roll into a small cone and sew to the opposite side.
  • Trim: Use warm brown yarn to add a few small stitches around the lid and spout base.

Optional Tabletop Display Arrangement

To recreate the image as a display, sit the fox on the edge of a wooden shelf, stool, or tray. Place the green hat to the fox’s left. Place the mushrooms and teapot to the fox’s right. Let the legs hang naturally, with sandals visible from the front.

  • Place the fox first and make sure it sits without tipping.
  • Arrange the bag diagonally so the strap crosses the cardigan.
  • Set the hat low and slightly forward, with the pom-pom facing up.
  • Group the mushrooms in uneven heights for a natural woodland look.
  • Set the teapot slightly behind the mushrooms so all pieces remain visible.

Assembly Order

  1. Sew the legs to the lower front body.
  2. Sew the tail to the lower back body.
  3. Sew the head to the body, centering the muzzle over the front body.
  4. Sew the arms to the upper sides of the body.
  5. Place the cardigan on the body and adjust the sleeves.
  6. Tack the cardigan at the shoulders and underarms if you do not need it removable.
  7. Sew sandals around the feet and add buttons.
  8. Place the bag strap over the shoulder and tack lightly where hidden under the collar.
  9. Add leaf patches, flower charm, and any final embroidery.
  10. Arrange the hat, mushrooms, and teapot beside the finished fox.

Detailed Knitting Tips for Accurate Shape

Use small, even stitches and avoid loose color changes. The fox in the image has a smooth knitted surface with visible stockinette texture, so do not brush the yarn heavily. A lightly fuzzy wool blend is fine, but the stitches should still be recognizable.

When stuffing the head, add small pieces of fiberfill rather than one large clump. Press stuffing toward the cheeks so the face becomes round and fox-like. The lower front should remain smooth because the cream muzzle patch will sit there.

The cardigan should be slightly roomy. Do not pull the front bands tightly when sewing or picking up stitches. A relaxed front edge helps the cardigan hang open and shows the rust body underneath, matching the image.

For the ears, sew the bases securely and slightly curve them forward. The ears should not lie flat against the head. The cream inner ear should face forward, and the dark edging should appear only along the outer pointed side.

The bag looks best when it hangs naturally. After sewing the strap, place it on the fox and check the length before attaching it permanently. The bag should land at the lower cardigan front, not under the arm or too low on the leg.

Facial Placement Guide

  • Eyes sit between Rnds 22 and 23 of the head.
  • Eyes are spaced about 12 sts apart.
  • Muzzle begins about 2 rounds below the eyes.
  • Nose sits at the upper center of the cream muzzle.
  • Mouth curve stays within the lower half of the muzzle patch.
  • Ears sit between Rnds 8 and 16, with the bases angled diagonally.
  • Keep all facial features symmetrical before sewing permanently.

Making the Cardigan Stripes Look Clean

When changing colors, twist the old and new yarns once at the wrong-side edge to prevent gaps. Do not pull the strands tightly. Tight carrying can make the cardigan pucker, especially across the chest and sleeves.

For the sleeves, try to start each new color at the underarm side. This hides the small color jog under the arm. If the jog is visible, use a tapestry needle to gently duplicate stitch over it with green yarn.

  • Block the cardigan lightly before dressing the fox.
  • Use steam only from a distance and never press the fabric flat.
  • Shape the fronts while damp so the bands lie straight.
  • Let the cardigan dry fully before adding buttons.

Beginner-Friendly Notes

If you are new to toy knitting, mark the front center of the head with a removable stitch marker before placing the eyes. This makes it easier to keep the muzzle, nose, and mouth centered.

When sewing small pieces, pin everything first. Check the toy from the front, sides, and top. Small placement changes can make a big difference in the expression and posture.

If your first sandal looks uneven, make the second one the same way rather than correcting only one. Matching pieces are more important than perfect individual pieces on a handmade toy.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After all pieces are attached, inspect the fox from the front. The head should sit straight, the eyes should be level, and the cream muzzle should form a soft smile area. Add one or two tiny black stitches at each mouth corner if the expression needs more definition.

Secure every yarn end by weaving it inside the stuffed pieces. Trim only after tugging gently to make sure the end will not slip out. Check buttons, bag strap, leaves, flower charm, and sandals for firm attachment.

  • Brush the cardigan lightly with your fingers to smooth the stripes.
  • Shape the ears so they lean outward and slightly forward.
  • Adjust the bag so it rests against the cardigan front.
  • Set the hat, mushrooms, and teapot close enough to look like one scene.

Care Notes

This fox is a decorative handmade toy, especially because it includes buttons, small accessories, and sewn-on details. It is not recommended for children under three years old unless all small parts are replaced with embroidered details.

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if using wooden buttons or safety eyes.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Reshape while damp and let air dry flat.
  • Keep away from pets that may chew small accessories.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the fox in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Strong sun can fade the rust-orange head and the deep green cardigan. If displaying on wood, make sure the surface is clean and dry before placing the toy.

For dust removal, use a soft makeup brush or clean paintbrush. Brush gently around the face, cardigan stripes, bag texture, and mushroom caps. Avoid pulling at the embroidered nose or leaf patches.

If the fox needs deeper cleaning, dampen a white cloth with cool water and a tiny amount of mild soap. Dab the stained area only. Do not soak the head, body, bag, or teapot, because stuffing can hold moisture and distort the shape.

Let every cleaned piece air dry completely before storage. To preserve the seated posture, store the fox sitting upright or lying on its back with the legs straight. Avoid crushing the ears, hat pom-pom, bag strap, or teapot handle.
