Finished Size

  • Crocodile length: about 16 inches from top of head to tail tip.
  • Body width: about 4 inches across the sweater area when lightly stuffed.
  • Head height: about 4 inches from chin to top curve.
  • Sweater width: about 5 inches across the front including sleeves.
  • Boot height: about 2 inches each.
  • Bag size: about 2 inches wide and 2 inches tall, not including strap.
  • Mushrooms: about 2 to 2.5 inches tall.

Skill Level

This pattern is suitable for an adventurous beginner who can knit, purl, increase, decrease, sew seams, pick up stitches, and work simple cable crosses. The crocodile is knitted mostly flat and seamed, with small pieces worked separately and sewn on firmly.

Construction Notes

The crocodile is made in separate knitted pieces. The head and long tail-body are seamed and stuffed first. The sweater is worked as a separate cardigan-style garment and sewn around the body, creating the cozy color block look shown in the image.

The crocodile lies slightly curved, with the head angled upward and the long tail tapering downward. The eyes sit high on the head, close together, and the sunflower is sewn beside one eye. The short arms extend from the sweater sleeves, and the rounded legs wear brown boots with cream cuffs.

Main Crocodile Body and Tail

Use green yarn. Work flat from the tail tip upward toward the chest. The front center panel includes a simple cable vine pattern to match the textured green belly and tail in the image.

Body Panel

  1. CO 10 sts.
  2. Row 1 WS: P all sts.
  3. Row 2 RS: K1, M1, K8, M1, K1. 12 sts.
  4. Row 3: P all sts.
  5. Row 4: K1, M1, K10, M1, K1. 14 sts.

  7. Row 9 WS: P all sts.
  8. Row 10 RS: K1, M1, K12, M1, K1. 16 sts.
  9. Continue increasing every 4th RS row in this way until you have 34 sts.

When you reach 34 sts, begin the center cable panel. The cable panel uses the middle 12 sts. Keep 11 sts at each side in stockinette stitch.

  1. Row 1 RS: K11, P2, K8, P2, K11.
  2. Row 2 WS: P11, K2, P8, K2, P11.

  7. Row 8 WS: P11, K2, P8, K2, P11.

Repeat these 8 rows until the body from the tail tip measures 10 inches. This creates the long textured crocodile body with a raised central twist. Keep the edges smooth because they will form the rounded sides after seaming.

  3. Work even in stockinette stitch until the back panel matches the front panel length before chest shaping.

  4. Stuff the tail lightly at the tip and more firmly through the body.
  5. Shape the lower body so it narrows gradually into the tail.
  6. Close the chest opening with mattress stitch.

Cardigan Buttons and Front Details

The sweater front has a vertical line of wooden-look buttons, with the top buttons placed on the cream yoke, one on the blue section, and the lower buttons on the rust section. This placement is important for matching the image.

  1. Lay the sweater flat on the crocodile body.
  2. Mark 5 button positions down the center front.
  3. Place Button 1 about 0.4 inch below the neckline.
  4. Place Button 2 about 0.7 inch below Button 1.
  5. Place Button 3 in the middle of the blue band.
  6. Place Button 4 at the top of the rust section.
  7. Place Button 5 near the lower hem ribbing.
  8. Sew each button with cream or brown thread, passing through the sweater and lightly into the body for stability.

Facial Embroidery

The expression is simple and friendly. The crocodile has large lifted eyes, tiny nostrils, and a small curved mouth line. Keep the face soft, not sharp, so it stays cute and gentle.

  1. Using black yarn, embroider two tiny nostrils on the green snout pad, about 0.6 inch apart.
  2. Each nostril should be made with 3 short horizontal stitches.
  3. Using brown yarn, embroider a small curved smile below the nostrils.
  4. Make the smile about 1 inch wide, following the curve of the snout.
  5. Secure all embroidery tails inside the head with a tapestry needle.

Optional White Side Teeth

The image shows a pale edge along the side of the mouth area. Add this detail with tiny cream stitches if you want a closer image match.

  1. Thread cream yarn on a tapestry needle.
  2. Along each side edge of the snout, make 4 tiny straight stitches.
  3. Each stitch should be about 0.2 inch long.
  4. Angle the stitches slightly downward so they look like soft little teeth.
  5. Do not make them too sharp; the toy should remain sweet and friendly.

Adding Texture to the Green Body

The long tail and belly should look knitted and sculpted, with raised lines similar to leafy cables. If your cable panel is not raised enough, you can add surface embroidery after stuffing.

  1. Use green yarn one shade darker or the same main green.
  2. Follow the center cable line from the chest to the tail tip.
  3. Make duplicate stitches over every third knitted stitch to emphasize the twist.
  4. On each side of the cable, add 6 short diagonal stitches to mimic leaf veins.
  5. Keep the embroidery soft and flat so it blends with the knitted fabric.

Assembly Order

  1. Knit and seam the long body and tail first.
  2. Knit, stuff, and attach the head at the top of the body.
  3. Add the snout pad and facial embroidery.
  4. Make and attach both eye mounds.
  5. Knit the sweater back, fronts, and sleeves.
  6. Fit the sweater to the crocodile body and sew in place.
  7. Attach arms through the sleeves.
  8. Knit legs, boots, and boot cuffs, then sew legs to lower body sides.
  9. Add buttons to the sweater front.
  10. Make the sunflower and sew it beside the eye.
  11. Knit the hat, bag, strawberries, and mushrooms as separate props.

Placement Guide

  • Head: Sew to the body at a slight diagonal, angled upward from the sweater neckline.
  • Eyes: Place high on the face, close together, with the white circles facing forward.
  • Sunflower: Place on the side of the face, beside one eye and above the snout.
  • Sweater: Center the front opening over the crocodile chest and belly.
  • Arms: Attach at the upper sides, just under the cream yoke section.
  • Legs: Sew at lower side angles so the boots point outward slightly.
  • Hat: Display beside the crocodile or place loosely on the head.
  • Bag: Display beside the toy with the strap curved upward.
  • Mushrooms: Place near the upper right side as small woodland props.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the crocodile from the front before securing the final seams. The head should look large and rounded, the eyes should sit evenly, and the sweater should not twist around the body. Adjust the stuffing by gently rolling the body between your hands.

Use small hidden stitches to secure any loose clothing edges. Add the sunflower last so it sits clearly on top of the head area. If the face looks uneven, remove only the embroidery stitches and redo them before tying final knots.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean gently with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if the toy includes wooden buttons.
  • Press out extra water with a towel instead of twisting.
  • Let the crocodile air dry flat in its natural shape.
  • Keep the small mushrooms and bag away from very young children if they are not sewn down.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Body has a long tapered green tail with a raised center cable.
  • Head is rounded and slightly larger than the sweater chest.
  • Eyes are raised, close together, and have white fronts with black pupils.
  • Sweater has cream, blue, and rust color blocks in the correct order.
  • Five buttons are sewn down the cardigan front.
  • Boots are brown with cream ribbed cuffs and small leaf charms.
  • Brown hat has a folded brim and cream pom-pom.
  • Bag has three red strawberries with white seed stitches.
  • Two mushrooms are finished, one red and one orange.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished crocodile in a dry place away from direct sunlight, especially if you used hand-dyed yarn. Sunlight may fade the green body, rust sweater section, red strawberries, and mushroom caps over time.

For dust removal, use a soft clean brush and move gently in the direction of the knitted stitches. Avoid pulling at the cable lines, buttons, flower petals, or small embroidered details.

If the toy becomes flattened, reshape it with your hands while dry. Roll the tail gently, lift the eye mounds, and smooth the sweater edges. Do not iron the stuffed parts, because heat can flatten the yarn texture and stuffing.
