Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written to create a soft knitted monkey doll with the same playful proportions shown in the picture. The head is round and slightly oversized, the muzzle is large and oval, the body is short and dressed, the legs are long and slim, and the arms are gently angled outward from the striped sweater.

The monkey is worked mostly in small seamless pieces using double-pointed needles or magic loop. Flat knitting instructions are included for tiny accessories when that gives better control. The sweater, shorts, sandals, bag, crown, and embroidered details are all built separately so the finished toy has a layered handmade look.

Finished Size

  • Finished height: about 12 in / 30.5 cm from top of head to bottom of sandals.
  • Head width: about 3.5 in / 9 cm across the widest point.
  • Body length: about 3 in / 7.5 cm from neck to bottom of shorts.
  • Arm length: about 3.75 in / 9.5 cm from shoulder seam to hand.
  • Leg length: about 4.25 in / 11 cm from shorts edge to sandal sole.
  • Tail length: about 4.5 in / 11.5 cm, curved and sewn behind the shorts.

Skill Level

Confident beginner to intermediate. You should know how to knit in the round, increase, decrease, pick up stitches, sew small knitted parts, and add simple embroidery. The pattern uses clear stitch counts for every shaped section so the pieces stay balanced and easy to assemble.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in dark brown for head top, ears, limbs, legs, and tail, about 65 yd.
  • Worsted weight yarn in tan camel for muzzle, hands, feet, and sandal toe areas, about 45 yd.

  • White felt or white knitted eye patches, about 1.25 in wide total.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Tapestry needle, stitch markers, pins, scissors, and removable row marker.

Gauge

  • Body gauge: 6 stitches and 8 rounds per 1 in / 2.5 cm in stockinette, knitted firmly in the round.
  • Accessory gauge: 7 stitches and 9 rows per 1 in / 2.5 cm with smaller needles.

Construction Notes

Work the monkey firmly and stuff gradually. The body should be softly rounded, not floppy. The head is attached straight onto the neckline, while the arms angle slightly downward and outward. The ears sit halfway up the head and are placed symmetrically beside the white eye patch.

For the cleanest image match, make the shorts separate from the body and sew them on over the lower torso. The sweater is also knitted separately as a short pullover tube with sleeves attached. This creates the visible layered edge at the waist and cuffs.

Head

Use dark brown yarn A. Work in the round. Stuff as you go, keeping the top round and the lower face slightly full so the muzzle can sit forward.

  1. CO 8 sts. Divide across needles and join to work in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts. 8 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in every st. 16 sts.

  22. Stuff the head firmly, especially around the cheeks.
  23. Rnd 30: *K1, ssk; repeat from * around. 12 sts.
  24. Rnd 31: SSK around. 6 sts.
  25. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull closed, and weave in end.

Large Tan Muzzle

The muzzle is the most important facial shape. It should be wide, oval, and slightly raised, covering the lower half of the face. Use tan yarn B and knit it flat.

  1. CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1, WS: P all sts.
  3. Row 2, RS: K1, kfb, K4, kfb, K1. 10 sts.
  4. Row 3: P all sts.
  5. Row 4: K1, kfb, K6, kfb, K1. 12 sts.
  6. Row 5: P all sts.
  7. Row 6: K1, kfb, K8, kfb, K1. 14 sts.
  8. Rows 7-11: Work stockinette, beginning with a purl row. Keep 14 sts.
  9. Row 12: K1, ssk, K8, k2tog, K1. 12 sts.
  10. Row 13: P all sts.
  11. Row 14: K1, ssk, K6, k2tog, K1. 10 sts.
  12. Row 15: P all sts.
  13. Row 16: K1, ssk, K4, k2tog, K1. 8 sts.
  14. BO all sts, leaving a 14 in tail for sewing.

Lightly stuff the center of the muzzle before sewing. Pin it from rounds 15 to 27 of the head. The upper edge should sit just beneath the eye patch. Sew around with small mattress stitches, adding extra stuffing before closing the final inch.

Nose and Muzzle Texture

  • Using dark brown yarn A, make 5 short vertical duplicate stitches in the center lower muzzle.
  • Place the first stitch between muzzle rows 8 and 9.
  • Place two stitches above it and two below it, slightly staggered.
  • Do not create a large nose. The image shows a textured tan muzzle with small dark accents, not a separate black nose.

White Eye Patch and Eyes

The monkey has two large white circles that touch each other, with black eyes centered inside. You may use white felt for the cleanest match, or knit the patches.

Knitted Eye Patch Option

  1. With white yarn, CO 6 sts for one oval.
  2. Row 1: P all sts.
  3. Row 2: Kfb, K4, kfb. 8 sts.
  4. Rows 3-5: Work stockinette.
  5. Row 6: SSK, K4, k2tog. 6 sts.
  6. BO all sts.
  7. Make a second oval the same way.

Sew the two white ovals side by side on the upper face, slightly overlapping at the center. Place the black safety eyes or buttons through the centers before the head is fully closed, or sew buttons securely after finishing. Keep the eyes wide and slightly surprised, matching the image.

Ears

Make 2 ears in dark brown yarn A. Each ear is a small rounded disk with a cupped edge. Work in the round first, then pinch slightly while sewing.

  1. CO 8 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts. 8 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in each st. 16 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: K all sts.
  5. Rnd 4: *K1, kfb; repeat from * around. 24 sts.
  6. Rnds 5-7: K all sts.
  7. Rnd 8: *K1, ssk; repeat from * around. 16 sts.
  8. Rnd 9: K all sts.
  9. Rnd 10: SSK around. 8 sts.
  10. Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull closed loosely.

Flatten each ear into a soft circle and add a tiny amount of stuffing. Sew one ear to each side of the head between rounds 13 and 20. The top of each ear should align near the top of the eye patch, and the lower edge should sit beside the muzzle.

Body Base

The body is hidden under the sweater and shorts, but a firm base helps the doll sit and stand nicely. Use dark brown yarn A.

  1. CO 12 sts. Divide and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts. 12 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: *K1, kfb; repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: K all sts.
  5. Rnd 4: *K2, kfb; repeat around. 24 sts.
  6. Rnd 5: K all sts.
  7. Rnd 6: *K3, kfb; repeat around. 30 sts.
  8. Rnds 7-17: K all sts.
  9. Rnd 18: *K3, ssk; repeat around. 24 sts.
  10. Rnd 19: K all sts.
  11. Rnd 20: *K2, ssk; repeat around. 18 sts.
  12. Stuff firmly through the body.
  13. Rnd 21: *K1, ssk; repeat around. 12 sts.
  14. BO all sts, leaving a long tail to sew the head to the body.

Striped Sweater Body

The sweater is a short, slightly boxy pullover. It has narrow stripes and a blue ribbed hem. Use the stripe order carefully to match the cheerful colors in the picture.

Stripe sequence: 2 rounds sky blue C, 2 rounds teal D, 2 rounds pale yellow E, 2 rounds light green F, 2 rounds medium blue G. Repeat this sequence until instructed.

  1. With sky blue C, CO 36 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-3: *K1, P1; repeat around for ribbed hem. 36 sts.
  3. Rnd 4: K all sts.

  9. Rnds 15-16: Join teal D and K all sts.
  10. Rnds 17-18: Join pale yellow E and K all sts.
  11. Rnd 19: With light green F, K8, BO 4 sts for first armhole, K10, BO 4 sts for second armhole, K10. 28 live sts remain.
  12. Rnd 20: With light green F, K8, CO 4 sts over gap, K10, CO 4 sts over gap, K10. 36 sts.
  13. Rnds 21-22: With medium blue G, K all sts.
  14. Rnds 23-24: With sky blue C, K all sts.
  15. Rnd 25: *K4, k2tog; repeat around. 30 sts.
  16. Rnds 26-28: *K1, P1; repeat around for neck ribbing, ending K2tog if needed to keep rib tidy.
  17. BO loosely in rib.

Weave in stripe ends neatly inside. Slide the sweater over the body before attaching the head if preferred. The lower hem should sit just above the shorts, with a clear blue band visible.

Sweater Sleeves

Make 2 sleeves. They are worked separately and sewn into the sweater armholes. Use the same color sequence, but keep the cuffs blue.

  1. With sky blue C, CO 18 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-3: *K1, P1; repeat around. 18 sts.
  3. Rnds 4-5: K all sts with medium blue G.
  4. Rnds 6-7: K all sts with teal D.

  7. Rnds 12-13: K all sts with sky blue C.
  8. Rnd 14: K all sts.
  9. BO all sts, leaving a long sewing tail.

Sew each sleeve into an armhole with the cuff pointing toward the hand. The sleeves should angle gently downward. Do not overstuff the sleeve itself; the arm underneath gives it shape.

Arms and Hands

Make 2 arms. Begin with tan hands and continue into dark brown upper arms. The sweater sleeve will cover most of the upper arm, leaving the tan hand visible below the blue cuff.

  1. With tan yarn B, CO 8 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts. 8 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in each st. 16 sts.
  4. Rnds 3-6: K all sts.
  5. Rnd 7: *K2, k2tog; repeat around. 12 sts.
  6. Change to dark brown A.
  7. Rnds 8-18: K all sts for 11 rounds.
  8. Stuff the hand firmly and the arm lightly.
  9. Rnd 19: *K1, k2tog; repeat around. 8 sts.
  10. BO all sts, leaving a long tail.

Insert each arm through a sleeve so the tan hand extends about 0.75 in below the cuff. Sew the shoulder end to the side of the body at body rounds 13-16. Then tack the sleeve top to the sweater armhole so it looks naturally joined.

Blue Shorts

The shorts are bright blue with two separate leg openings and a visible tied cord at the front. They sit high on the waist and cover the bottom of the sweater slightly.

  1. With sky blue C, CO 40 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-3: *K1, P1; repeat around for waistband. 40 sts.
  3. Rnds 4-9: K all sts.

  7. Rnds 9-10: *K1, P1; repeat around for cuff.
  8. BO loosely in rib.
  9. Return second 20 sts to needles.
  10. Work second leg the same as first leg.
  11. Sew the small crotch opening closed with matching blue yarn.

Pull the shorts onto the lower body. The top waistband should sit directly below the sweater hem. Sew the waistband invisibly to the body with small stitches so the shorts do not slip.

Front Bow Tie

  1. With light blue yarn, CO 3 sts on smaller needles.
  2. Knit an i-cord for 10 in / 25 cm.
  3. BO and weave in ends.
  4. Thread the cord through the front waistband at two points, about 0.5 in apart.
  5. Tie a small bow with two loops and two hanging ends.
  6. Tack the center knot to the shorts so it stays in place.

Legs

The monkey has long slim brown legs below the blue shorts. Make 2. Use dark brown yarn A and stuff lightly so the legs stay narrow.

  1. CO 12 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-22: K all sts.
  3. Stuff lightly every 6 rounds using small pinches of fiberfill.
  4. Rnd 23: *K1, k2tog; repeat around. 8 sts.
  5. BO all sts, leaving a long tail.

Sew the upper ends of the legs inside the two shorts openings. Leave a little space between the legs at the center front so the shorts shape is visible. The legs should hang straight downward.

Feet

The feet are tan and rounded, with blue sandal straps added later. Make 2 in tan yarn B.

  1. CO 8 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in every st. 16 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: K all sts.
  5. Rnd 4: *K3, kfb; repeat around. 20 sts.

  10. Stuff the toe firmly.
  11. Rnd 13: *K1, k2tog; repeat around. 8 sts.
  12. BO all sts, leaving a tail for sewing.

Sew one foot to the bottom of each leg. Angle the feet slightly outward so the monkey has the same relaxed handmade stance shown in the image.

Blue Sandals

The sandals have blue straps across the tan toes, a blue ankle band, cream sole edging, and small side buttons. Make all pieces twice.

Sandal Sole Edge

  1. With cream yarn, CO 24 sts using smaller needles.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. BO all sts, leaving a long tail.
  4. Wrap the strip around the bottom front of the foot and sew it like a narrow raised sole.

  5. Sew securely at the outside edge and add one tiny wooden button on each sandal.

Tail

The tail is long, dark brown, and curves beside the right leg. Use an i-cord and wire-free shaping. The curve comes from sewing and light stuffing, not from a hard insert.

  1. With dark brown A, CO 6 sts on double-pointed needles.
  2. Work i-cord for 4.5 in / 11.5 cm.
  3. Every 0.75 in, pause and push in a very small amount of stuffing with a blunt needle.
  4. After reaching length, k2tog 3 times. 3 sts.
  5. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, and pull closed.
  6. Sew the base of the tail to the back right side of the body at the shorts line.
  7. Curve the tail downward, then slightly outward. Tack it once near the lower body so it holds the pictured shape.

Flower Crown

The monkey wears a sweet flower crown across the top of the head. It has small pastel flowers in pink, yellow, blue, and mint, set on a green base. Keep this piece delicate so it does not overpower the face.

  6. Fold the rectangle so the bottom edge meets row 15, leaving rows 16-22 as a soft flap.
  7. Sew both side seams with beige yarn.

Bag Flap Stripe

  • Using teal yarn, embroider 2 short horizontal duplicate-stitch rows across the flap.
  • Using light green yarn, add 3 small V stitches below the flap.

  2. Work i-cord for 15 in / 38 cm.
  3. BO and sew one end to each side of the bag.
  4. Place strap over the monkey’s left shoulder and across the chest.
  5. Tack strap lightly at the shoulder and side body so it stays flat.

Embroidered Sweater Flowers

The sweater has a row of small flowers across the lower front. This detail is essential for matching the image. Keep the flowers low, just above the blue hem, and place them across the center front only.

Embroider tiny radial stitches in blue, yellow, and green around the hat center. For the bee, make a small yellow oval using 5 duplicate stitches, add 3 black stripes, and sew two tiny white wing stitches beside it.

Optional Tiny Watering Can

The small object on the right can be interpreted as a tiny knitted watering can or garden pot. Use soft beige and pale blue to keep the accessory gentle and handmade.

  1. With beige yarn, CO 18 sts and join in the round.

  10. Add sandals, ankle straps, buttons, and cream sole trim.
  11. Sew tail to the back right side and tack into a gentle curve.
  12. Add sweater flower embroidery, bag, strap, flower crown, and optional accessories.

Detailed Sewing Placement

  • Head to body: Center the head directly over the body. Sew through head rounds 27-29 and body bind-off edge twice for strength.
  • Muzzle: Place from head round 15 to round 27, centered below eyes. The widest part should sit across the cheek area.
  • Eyes: Place eye patch across head rounds 11-16. Black centers should be about 0.4 in apart.
  • Ears: Sew between head rounds 13-20, one on each side. Keep them slightly cupped.
  • Arms: Attach at body rounds 12-15, angled downward about 35 degrees.
  • Legs: Attach under shorts, separated by about 0.4 in at center.
  • Tail: Attach behind the right hip, just below the sweater and shorts overlap.
  • Bag: Position on the front right hip. Strap crosses from left shoulder to right side.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After all pieces are sewn, check the monkey from the front. The face should look open and friendly, with the white eyes close together and the tan muzzle taking up the lower half of the face. Adjust the muzzle with extra stitches if one side looks lifted.

Use dark brown yarn to add a few short vertical accents on the muzzle. Add tiny brown eyebrow stitches above the white eye patch only if desired, but keep them subtle. The pictured monkey has a simple surprised expression, so avoid heavy facial embroidery.

Fluff the flower crown gently and make sure it sits like a soft headband, not a tall hat. Straighten the sweater stripes so they run horizontally around the body. Smooth the shorts and retie the blue bow at the front.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean gently with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if using buttons, felt, or safety eyes.
  • Press out water with a towel instead of twisting the toy.
  • Let the monkey air dry flat in a shaded place.
  • Reshape the muzzle, ears, sandals, and bag while damp.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The tan muzzle is centered and lightly stuffed.
  • The eyes are even, close together, and placed above the muzzle.
  • The sweater has visible blue, teal, yellow, green, and medium blue stripes.
  • The blue shorts sit under the sweater with a tied bow at the front.
  • The sandals have toe straps, ankle straps, cream edging, and side buttons.
  • The crossbody bag rests at the right hip and has a red mushroom applique.
  • The flower crown includes several pastel flowers across the head.
  • The tail curves naturally along the side of the body.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished monkey in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Bright yarn colors can fade if left near a window for long periods. If the doll is used as nursery decor, place it on a shelf where the flower crown, bag, and small accessories will not be pulled.

For dust removal, use a soft dry cloth or a clean makeup brush. Brush gently around the muzzle, sweater embroidery, bag mushroom, and tiny flowers. Avoid hard rubbing because small duplicate stitches and embroidered petals may loosen over time.

If the toy becomes flattened during storage, massage the stuffing back into shape with your fingers. Round the head first, then smooth the body, legs, and feet. Retie the shorts bow and straighten the bag strap before displaying the monkey again.

For long-term preservation, wrap the doll loosely in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton cloth. Do not compress the ears, flower crown, or sandals. Keep optional accessories in a small breathable pouch so the full garden picnic set stays together.
