This Mushroom Garden Puppy is a sweet knitted puppy doll with a warm brown-and-white face, floppy ears, glossy safety eyes, a black nose, a blue floral cardigan, striped shirt, brown shorts, tall socks, blue shoes, a headband with a yellow flower, and tiny garden accessories including a mushroom shoulder bag, watering can, small knit planter, and pom-pom garden hat.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern is written to recreate the knitted puppy shown in the image as closely as possible. The finished doll is worked as a soft amigurumi-style knitted figure with a large rounded head, short seated body, slim arms, sturdy legs, and carefully shaped clothing pieces.
The puppy has a chestnut brown head with a white muzzle panel running upward into a narrow white forehead stripe. The ears are rounded and floppy, sitting slightly outward from the sides of the head. The cardigan is knitted separately in blue and decorated with small cream flowers and green stems.
The body is dressed in a striped shirt, brown shorts, white-and-orange socks, and blue Mary Jane-style shoes. The small accessories are important for matching the garden theme, so do not skip the mushroom bag, watering can, planter, headband flower, and small pom-pom hat.
Finished Size
- Finished height: about 12.5 to 13.5 inches from shoes to top of head.
- Head width: about 4.5 inches across the cheeks.
- Body height: about 4 inches from neck to shorts hem.
- Arm length: about 3.5 inches from shoulder to paw.
- Leg length: about 4 inches from shorts hem to shoe sole.
- Shoulder bag: about 2.25 inches wide.
- Watering can: about 2 inches wide, including handle and spout.
Skill Level
Intermediate. This project uses small circumference knitting, increases, decreases, color changes, picking up stitches, embroidery, duplicate stitch, simple seams, and stuffed shaping. A confident beginner can complete it slowly if each section is followed carefully.
Materials
- DK weight yarn in chestnut brown for puppy head, ears, and upper legs.
- DK weight yarn in warm white for muzzle, forehead stripe, lower paws, socks, and shoe openings.
- DK weight yarn in denim blue for cardigan, shoes, headband, and watering can.
- DK weight yarn in light brown for shorts.
- DK weight yarn in cream for bag, planter, tiny flowers, and shoe trim.
- DK weight yarn in orange for shirt stripes and sock stripes.
- DK weight yarn in pale yellow for headband flower centers and cardigan flower centers.
- Small amounts of red, white, and green yarn for mushroom embroidery and leaves.
- Small amounts of gray and tan yarn for the pom-pom garden hat.
- Black yarn or embroidery floss for mouth details.
- One black plastic safety nose, 14 to 16 mm wide.
- Two black safety eyes, 12 mm wide.
- Two small brown buttons for the cardigan front.
- Polyester fiberfill stuffing.
- 2.75 mm double-pointed needles or circular needles for magic loop.
- 3.0 mm needles for clothing pieces if you knit tightly.
- Tapestry needle.
- Locking stitch markers.
- Small scissors.
- Blunt sewing needle for attaching buttons and accessories.
Gauge
Gauge is important because the puppy needs a firm, toy-like fabric with visible knit texture. Work tightly enough that stuffing does not show through the stitches.
- Main doll gauge: 7 stitches and 10 rounds per inch in stockinette, knitted in the round with 2.75 mm needles.
- Cardigan gauge: 6.5 stitches and 9 rows per inch in stockinette with 3.0 mm needles.
- Accessory gauge: 7 to 8 stitches per inch, depending on the piece.
If your stitches are loose, go down one needle size. If your fabric is stiff and difficult to stuff smoothly, go up one needle size only for the clothing pieces, not for the head or body.

Construction Notes
The head and body are knitted separately for easier shaping. The body is made from the feet upward so the puppy sits well. The clothing is partly integrated and partly separate, just like the doll in the image where the cardigan rests over the striped shirt and shorts.

For a smooth toy finish, use invisible ladder stitch for seams. Stuff gradually and firmly, but do not overstuff the neck area. The head should remain rounded, not stretched. The muzzle should sit proudly at the front and slightly lower than the eye line.
Head
The head is knitted in chestnut brown with a white muzzle panel added separately. The white forehead stripe is embroidered later with duplicate stitch so it stays narrow and centered.

Pin the muzzle to the lower front of the head. The top edge should sit about 4 rounds below the eye line. Sew around the edge with small mattress stitches. Add a little stuffing under the center before closing the final inch so the snout has gentle dimension.
Forehead Stripe
- Using warm white yarn, duplicate stitch a vertical stripe from the top center of the muzzle upward for 12 rounds.
- Make the stripe 3 stitches wide at the bottom, then narrow it to 2 stitches wide near the top.
- Keep the stripe centered between the eyes. It should look like a clean white blaze on the puppy’s forehead.
Eyes, Nose, and Mouth
- Place the safety eyes 8 stitches apart, centered above the muzzle. They should sit between Rnds 24 and 25 of the head.
- Insert the black nose at the top center of the muzzle, about 3 rows below the muzzle’s upper edge.
- With black embroidery floss, stitch one short vertical line downward from the nose.
- Stitch two small curved mouth lines from the bottom of that vertical line, making a gentle puppy smile.
- Do not make the mouth too wide. The expression in the image is soft, calm, and sweet.
Ears

Fold each ear slightly lengthwise and sew the cast-on edge closed with two small stitches to create a gentle cupped shape. Sew ears to the head between Rnds 15 and 25, with the upper edge starting slightly behind the eye line. Angle the ears outward and down so they resemble the image.
Body with Striped Shirt Base
The body is short and rounded. The upper part shows a cream and orange striped shirt under the open cardigan. The lower part will be covered by brown shorts, but the shirt should still be visible at the front.

- Sew the pom-pom to the top of the hat.
Shoe Sole and Toe Shaping Details
The shoes in the image look rounded at the front with a slightly flatter base. To create this shape, use extra blue yarn to add a sole line around the bottom of each shoe.
- Thread denim blue yarn onto a tapestry needle.
- Work a running stitch around the bottom edge of each shoe, about 2 rounds above the cast-on center.
- Pull gently to define the sole edge.
- Use gray or taupe yarn to add a thin line along the very bottom of each shoe.
- Shape the toe with your fingers while adjusting the stuffing.
Shirt Front Definition
The striped shirt should stay visible under the open cardigan. After the cardigan is placed, use a few small stitches to hold the cardigan open at the center front.
- Make sure the orange and white stripes line up vertically at the front.
- Do not sew the cardigan closed all the way.
- Allow the two small buttons to sit slightly off center, like the image.
- If the cardigan covers too much of the shirt, gently steam-block only the cardigan fronts before placing them again.
Attaching the Legs
The puppy is seated with both legs hanging forward. This seated position is created by sewing the legs to the lower front of the body instead of directly underneath the body.
- Place the body flat with the front facing you.
- Pin the legs at the lower front edge, about 5 stitches apart.
- The orange sock sections should begin just below the shorts hem.
- Sew around the top of each leg with strong hidden stitches.
- Angle the shoes slightly outward so the puppy looks relaxed and balanced.
- Add a second round of stitches through the back of each leg for durability.
Attaching the Head
The head is large compared to the body, which gives the puppy its cute amigurumi-style character. Attach it carefully so it does not lean too far forward.
- Place the head on the body with the muzzle centered over the shirt front.
- Pin the head in place from several angles.
- Check that the ears are level and the white forehead stripe is centered.
- Use chestnut brown or matching hidden thread to sew around the neck connection.
- Work at least two full rounds of stitching around the neck for strength.
- Add a small amount of stuffing under the chin if needed before closing the final gap.
Flower and Garden Embroidery Placement
The charm of the design comes from the small garden details. Keep them miniature and delicate. Large embroidery will overpower the puppy’s soft face and clothing.
- Place the largest cardigan flowers near the lower front corners.
- Place smaller flowers near the chest and shoulder area.
- Use pale green stems that curve slightly rather than perfectly straight stems.
- On the bag, make the mushrooms red and white so they stand out clearly.
- On the planter, keep the mushroom simple with one cap, one stem, and two leaves.
Optional Light Cheek Shaping
The puppy in the image has a soft rounded face. You can gently sculpt the cheeks and eye area with yarn tensioning.
- Thread chestnut brown yarn through a long needle.
- Insert at the back lower head and exit beside the right eye.
- Make a tiny stitch beside the eye and return to the back lower head.
- Pull gently, just enough to create a shallow eye socket.
- Repeat for the left eye.
- Knot securely and hide the yarn tail inside the head.
Do not pull too tightly. The safety eyes should look glossy and round, not sunken. The expression should remain bright, friendly, and innocent.
Detailed Knitting Notes for Beginners
When knitting small toy pieces, always check the shape after every few rounds. Stuffing can change the final look, so it is better to add small amounts often instead of pushing in one large amount at the end.
If your color changes create loose strands, twist the new yarn with the old yarn on the inside of the work. This keeps the stripes clean and prevents holes. For the puppy’s shirt and socks, the stripes should look tidy because they remain visible.
- Use firm tension for the head, body, arms, and legs.
- Use slightly softer tension for the cardigan so it can fit over the body.
- Use the same yarn weight for all pieces to keep the proportions consistent.
- Pin every major part before sewing permanently.
- Check the front view, side view, and seated view before fastening off.
Assembly Order
Use this order for the cleanest finish. It prevents the cardigan, strap, and accessories from blocking your sewing path.
- Knit and stuff the head.
- Sew on the muzzle and embroider the forehead stripe.
- Install or sew the eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Knit and sew the ears to the head.
- Knit the body and shorts.
- Knit the legs and attach them to the seated body.
- Knit the arms and attach them to the upper body.
- Place the cardigan on the body and secure it lightly.
- Attach the head to the dressed body.
- Add the headband and yellow flower.
- Add cardigan embroidery and buttons if not already finished.
- Knit the bag, planter, watering can, and hat.
- Position the bag strap across the chest and tack it in place.
- Place or sew the small garden accessories beside the puppy for display.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
After all parts are attached, hold the puppy upright and check the balance. The head should sit straight, the ears should droop evenly, and the cardigan should frame the striped shirt. Adjust small seams before hiding the final yarn tails.
- Brush the muzzle lightly with clean fingers to smooth the stitches.
- Check that the nose is centered on the white muzzle.
- Reinforce the mouth embroidery with a second pass if it looks too pale.
- Make sure the blue headband runs behind both ears.
- Tack the yellow flower firmly so it does not flop forward.
- Secure all buttons and accessories with strong thread if the doll will be handled often.
Care Notes
This knitted puppy is best used as a decorative handmade toy or display piece. Because it includes small buttons, safety eyes, a safety nose, and small accessories, it is not suitable for children under 3 years old.
- Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash if the doll contains safety eyes, buttons, or firm sculpted stuffing.
- Do not tumble dry.
- Lay flat on a towel and reshape while damp.
- Keep away from direct sunlight for long periods to protect the yarn colors.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The puppy has a chestnut brown head with a white oval muzzle.
- The white forehead stripe is centered and narrow.
- The ears are floppy and sewn at a downward angle.
- The eyes are glossy, evenly spaced, and placed above the muzzle.
- The blue cardigan is open at the front and decorated with cream flowers.
- The striped shirt shows clearly under the cardigan.
- The brown shorts sit neatly over the lower body.
- The socks show white and orange sections above the blue shoes.
- The shoes have straps and small side bow details.
- The shoulder bag has red mushroom embroidery.
- The headband has a yellow flower near one side.
- The watering can, planter, and pom-pom hat are included for the full garden scene.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
To preserve the shape, avoid soaking the entire doll unless absolutely necessary. The head and body contain firm stuffing, and too much water can make the stuffing shift. Gentle spot cleaning is the safest method.
For dust, use a soft dry cloth or a clean makeup brush. Brush around the cardigan embroidery, flower headband, and bag details carefully so the small yarn stitches do not loosen.
- Store the puppy upright or lying flat in a breathable cotton bag.
- Do not store it in a tightly sealed plastic bag for long periods.
- Add tissue around the ears and accessories if storing in a box.
- Keep the shoulder bag strap flat so it does not stretch.
- Check the embroidered flowers occasionally and secure loose ends with a tapestry needle.
With careful finishing and gentle handling, your Mushroom Garden Puppy will keep its rounded face, sweet outfit, and tiny garden details beautifully. The finished piece should look like a soft knitted puppy sitting in a cozy garden, ready to water flowers and collect tiny mushrooms.
