Crochet Tutorial: Sunflower Garden Zebra – Free Crochet Pattern.

This cheerful sunflower garden zebra is a detailed amigurumi-style crochet doll with a rounded striped head, soft gray muzzle, upright ears, fluffy mane, striped arms and legs, blue overalls, brown sandals, sunflower accents, a sunflower hat, a crossbody sunflower bag, and two tiny crochet bees. The design is worked in firm spiral crochet with careful color changes, shaped pieces, and neat stitched assembly so the finished zebra matches the garden-themed character shown in the image.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Zebra doll: about 12–13 in / 30–33 cm tall when made with DK cotton yarn and a 2.5 mm hook.
  • Sunflower hat: about 4.5 in / 11.5 cm wide.
  • Crossbody sunflower bag: about 2 in / 5 cm wide.
  • Tiny bees: about 1.5–2 in / 4–5 cm long.

Skill Level

Intermediate amigurumi. The pattern uses basic stitches, shaping, color changes, small decorative parts, and detailed sewing. A confident beginner can also make it by working slowly and using stitch markers for every round.

Materials

  • DK or sport weight cotton yarn in ivory, charcoal gray, medium gray, black, denim blue, golden yellow, sunflower yellow, brown, tan beige, white, leaf green, blush pink, and a small amount of dark brown.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook for the doll and clothing.
  • 2.0 mm crochet hook for flowers, bees, and small details.
  • 8 mm black safety eyes, or black embroidery thread if making for a young child.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Small buttons for overall straps, about 7–9 mm wide.
  • Black, gray, and white yarn scraps for the mane and tail tassel.
  • Pink embroidery floss or yarn for cheek blush.
  • Pins for positioning pieces before sewing.

Abbreviations Used

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • st: stitch
  • sts: stitches
  • R: round or row
  • FO: fasten off

Gauge and Crochet Texture

For the firm doll body in the photo, use tight amigurumi tension. With DK cotton yarn and a 2.5 mm hook, 8 sc across should measure about 1 in / 2.5 cm. The fabric should be dense enough that stuffing does not show through.

The zebra is made with clear, compact single crochet stitches. The head and muzzle are rounded with visible spiral texture. The overalls are slightly smoother and snug over the belly, while the sunflower petals are raised and textured to look cheerful and layered.

Important Color Notes

  • The zebra head is mainly ivory with charcoal and medium gray stripes.
  • The muzzle is darker gray and protrudes forward in a rounded oval shape.
  • The arms and legs use alternating ivory and charcoal stripes.
  • The shirt under the overalls is golden yellow with brown stripes.
  • The overalls are denim blue with two straps and small buttons.
  • The sandals are tan soles with brown straps and tiny sunflower-like side accents.

Head

Work in continuous rounds. Use ivory as the main color. Change colors neatly by finishing the last yarn-over of the final stitch with the next color. Stuff firmly as you go, especially around the cheeks and forehead.

Insert safety eyes between R13 and R14, about 9 stitches apart, leaving space for the large muzzle. Add extra stuffing to the face before closing. Do not close completely until the muzzle placement is checked.

Shaping note: The photo shows a round forehead and a long oval zebra face. The head should not be flat. Massage the stuffing upward to form a full dome before attaching the muzzle.

Large Gray Muzzle

The muzzle is the most important feature. It is a protruding oval shape in dark gray, placed low on the face. It begins flat at the nose tip and expands outward before narrowing at the base.

  1. R1: With dark gray, make 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc around. (12)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat around. (18)
  4. R4: sc 2, inc; repeat around. (24)

  10. R10: sc 10, dec, sc 14, dec, sc 10. (36)
  11. R11: sc 4, dec; repeat around. (30)
  12. R12: sc around. (30)

Stuff the muzzle firmly but keep the back edge slightly flat. Pin it to the lower half of the head, centered below the eyes. The top edge should begin around R13 of the head, and the bottom edge should reach close to the neck opening.

Sew around the muzzle using dark gray yarn. Add more stuffing before the last few stitches so the muzzle projects forward in the same rounded way as the image.

Neck

The neck is short and hidden by the striped shirt collar. It should be sturdy enough to hold the large head upright.

  1. R1: With ivory, make 18 sc around the open base of the head, or crochet a separate tube of 18 sc.
  2. R2: sc around in charcoal. (18)
  3. R3: sc around in ivory. (18)
  4. R4: sc around in charcoal. (18)

Stuff firmly. Leave a long tail for sewing the head to the body after the overalls are complete.

Body

The body is rounded and slightly pear-shaped under the blue overalls. Work the body first in shirt colors, then crochet the overalls section directly over the lower body for a fitted look.

  1. R1: With brown, make 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc around. (12)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat around. (18)
  4. R4: sc 2, inc; repeat around. (24)

  13. R13: With denim blue in BLO, sc around. (48)
  14. R14: sc around in denim blue. (48)
  15. R15: sc 7, inc; repeat around. (54)
  16. R16-R24: sc around in denim blue for 9 rounds. (54)
  17. R25: sc 7, dec; repeat around. (48)
  18. R26: sc around. (48)
  19. R27: sc 6, dec; repeat around. (42)
  20. R28: sc 5, dec; repeat around. (36)
  21. R29: sc 4, dec; repeat around. (30)
  22. R30: sc 3, dec; repeat around. (24)

Stuff the body firmly. Keep the lower portion rounded because the overalls in the image are plump and sit smoothly around the belly. Leave the top open for joining to the neck.

Overall Bib

The front bib is crocheted onto the upper front of the overalls. It sits below the striped shirt and reaches up to the chest. Use denim blue.

  1. Find the center front of R13 on the body.
  2. Attach denim blue yarn into a front loop from R13.
  3. Row 1: sc 14 across the front loops. ch 1, turn. (14)
  4. Row 2: sc across. ch 1, turn. (14)
  5. Row 3: dec, sc 10, dec. ch 1, turn. (12)
  6. Row 4-8: sc across. ch 1, turn. (12)
  7. Row 9: sc across, FO with long tail. (12)

Sew the side edges of the bib neatly to the body. The top edge should stay flat and straight, just like the front of the overalls in the picture.

Overall Shorts Leg Openings

The lower overalls look like short pants with two separated leg openings. Use the bottom body area as the base and make two short tubes.

  • Mark 12 stitches at the front center for the gap between the legs.
  • Attach denim blue yarn on one side of the lower body opening.
  • Crochet 18 sc around the first leg opening for 4 rounds.
  • Repeat on the second side for the other leg opening.
  • Add one round of light blue or slightly lighter denim sc at the hem if desired.

📌Thank you for reading the article

For a clean hem like the image, work one final round of reverse single crochet or tight slip stitch around each shorts opening.

Overall Straps

The straps run from the back waist over the shoulders to the front bib. They are narrow denim blue strips with small buttons attached at the front.

  1. With denim blue, ch 28 for the first strap.
  2. Starting in the second ch from hook, sc 27. FO with long tails.
  3. Make a second strap the same way.
  4. Sew one end of each strap to the back of the overalls, about 6 stitches apart.
  5. Bring each strap over the shoulder and sew to the top corners of the bib.
  6. Sew one small beige button on each front strap end.

Keep the straps slightly angled outward. This creates the same playful garden-overall look shown in the image.

Arms

Make two arms. The hands are tan beige, while the sleeves are ivory and charcoal stripes. The arms should hang at a slight outward angle beside the body.

  1. R1: With tan beige, make 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc around. (12)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat around. (18)
  4. R4-R6: sc around. (18)
  5. R7: sc 1, dec; repeat around. (12)
  6. R8: With ivory, sc around. (12)
  7. R9: With charcoal, sc around. (12)
  8. R10: With ivory, sc around. (12)
  9. R11: With charcoal, sc around. (12)
  10. R12: With ivory, sc around. (12)
  11. R13: With charcoal, sc around. (12)
  12. R14: With ivory, sc around. (12)
  13. R15: With golden yellow, sc around. (12)
  14. R16: With brown, sc around. (12)
  15. R17: With golden yellow, sc around. (12)
  16. R18: sc 1, dec; repeat around. (8)

Stuff the hand and lower arm firmly. Stuff the upper arm lightly so it can sit flat against the shoulder. Flatten the top and sew across. Make the second arm the same way.

Legs

Make two striped legs. The legs are straight and narrow with ivory and charcoal bands, ending in tan sandal feet. The legs should show below the shorts.

  1. R1: With ivory, make 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc around. (12)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat around. (18)
  4. R4: sc around in ivory. (18)
  5. R5: With charcoal, sc around. (18)
  6. R6: With ivory, sc around. (18)
  7. R7: With charcoal, sc around. (18)
  8. R8: With ivory, sc around. (18)
  9. R9: With charcoal, sc around. (18)
  10. R10: With ivory, sc around. (18)
  11. R11: With charcoal, sc around. (18)
  12. R12: With ivory, sc around. (18)
  13. R13: With charcoal, sc around. (18)
  14. R14: With ivory, sc around. (18)
  15. R15: With charcoal, sc around. (18)
  16. R16: With ivory, sc around. (18)

Stuff the legs evenly. Leave a long tail for sewing into the shorts openings. The stripes should line up visibly, but slight handmade variation is fine.

Feet and Sandal Base

The feet are tan beige ovals with brown sandal straps. They are wider than the legs and sit flat so the zebra can rest nicely on a table.

  1. R1: With tan beige, ch 7. Starting in second ch from hook, sc 5, 3 sc in last ch. Work on other side of chain: sc 4, inc. (14)
  2. R2: inc, sc 4, inc 3 times, sc 4, inc 2 times. (20)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, sc 5, sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc, sc 5, sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc. (28)
  4. R4: BLO sc around. (28)
  5. R5: sc around. (28)
  6. R6: sc 8, dec 6 times, sc 8. (22)
  7. R7: sc 7, dec 4 times, sc 7. (18)

Stuff the front of the foot firmly. Insert the lower leg into the top opening and sew around. Make the second foot the same way.

Brown Sandal Straps

  • With brown yarn, ch 16 and sc back across for the front foot strap.
  • Sew across the top of the tan foot, slightly above the toe area.
  • Make one ankle strap by chaining 20 and slip stitching back across.
  • Wrap around the ankle and sew securely.
  • Add a tiny yellow flower or beige button on the outer side of each sandal.

Ears

The ears are upright and dark gray outside, with lighter inner shaping. Make two. They should stand near the top sides of the head.

  1. R1: With charcoal, make 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: sc around. (6)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat around. (9)
  4. R4: sc around. (9)
  5. R5: sc 2, inc; repeat around. (12)
  6. R6: sc around. (12)
  7. R7: sc 3, inc; repeat around. (15)
  8. R8: sc around. (15)
  9. R9: sc 4, inc; repeat around. (18)
  10. R10-R11: sc around. (18)

Flatten each ear without stuffing. Sew the bottom edge closed. Pin the ears between R8 and R12 of the head, angled outward slightly. Sew firmly so they stay upright.

Mane

The mane in the image is a short, fluffy tuft running from the top of the head down the back. Use strands of white, gray, and charcoal yarn.

  1. Cut 28 strands of yarn, each about 4 in / 10 cm long.
  2. Using a hook, pull one strand halfway through a stitch along the center top of the head.
  3. Tie the strand in a tight knot.
  4. Continue placing strands from between the ears down the back of the head.
  5. Trim the mane to about 1.25 in / 3 cm tall at the top and slightly shorter down the back.

For the upright tuft visible above the forehead, add 8 extra white and gray strands between the ears and trim them into a soft fan shape.

Tail

The tail is mostly hidden behind the overalls but should show as a black and gray tassel below the shorts.

  1. With charcoal, ch 10.
  2. Starting in second ch from hook, sl st 9. FO.
  3. Cut 8 short strands of black and gray yarn.
  4. Tie them to the end of the chain and trim evenly.
  5. Sew the tail to the back lower body, centered below the overalls.

Sunflower Hat

The hat is a flat round garden hat with a brown sunflower center on top, yellow brim, and raised yellow petals. It sits beside the doll in the image, but it can also be placed on the zebra’s head.

Hat Crown

  1. R1: With brown, make 8 sc in MR. (8)
  2. R2: inc around. (16)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat around. (24)

Sunflower Petals Around Hat Center

Attach sunflower yellow yarn to the front loops left at R7 of the hat crown.

  • Petal repeat: ch 4, starting in second ch from hook sc 1, hdc 1, dc 1, skip 1 front loop, sl st in next front loop.
  • Repeat around the brown center until the petals form a full sunflower ring.
  • FO and weave in ends at the back.

For the raised textured center, embroider several small dark brown straight stitches over the brown circle. This gives the sunflower center the same seed-like look as the image.

Small Sunflower for Head

This sunflower is placed near one ear with small green leaves. Use the 2.0 mm hook so it stays delicate.

Flower Center

  1. R1: With dark brown, make 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc around. (12)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat around. (18)

Petals

  • Attach sunflower yellow.
  • Repeat this petal around: ch 3, hdc in second ch, dc in next ch, sl st into next stitch of center.
  • Make 18 small petals total.

Leaves

  • With green, ch 5.
  • Starting in second ch from hook: sc 1, hdc 1, dc 1, hdc 1.
  • FO and make 2 leaves.
  • Sew leaves under the flower before attaching it to the head near the left ear.

Sunflower Applique for Overall Bib

The small sunflower on the front of the blue overalls is centered on the chest. It should be flat enough not to overwhelm the bib.

  1. With brown, make 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. Inc around. (12)
  3. With sunflower yellow, repeat around: ch 3, sc in second ch, hdc in next ch, sl st in next stitch.
  4. FO with a long yellow tail.
  5. Sew the flower to the lower center of the bib.

Crossbody Strap

The brown crossbody strap runs diagonally from one shoulder to the opposite hip. It holds the larger sunflower bag at the side.

  1. With brown yarn, ch 58.
  2. Starting in second ch from hook, sl st 57 for a thin cord.
  3. FO with long tails.
  4. Place the strap from the zebra’s right shoulder across the body to the left hip.
  5. Sew lightly at the shoulder and side so it stays in place.

Crossbody Sunflower Bag

The sunflower bag is a round flower pouch with a brown center and bright yellow petals. It hangs on the lower side of the body.

Bag Back

  1. R1: With brown, make 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc around. (12)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat around. (18)

  2. R2: inc around. (12)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat around. (18)
  4. R4: sc 2, inc; repeat around. (24)

Bag Petals

  • Attach sunflower yellow to the front piece.
  • Repeat around: ch 4, sc in second ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, skip 1 stitch, sl st in next stitch.
  • Continue until the front piece has a full sunflower edge.

Joining the Bag

  1. Place front and back pieces together with wrong sides facing.
  2. Using brown yarn, sc through both layers around the lower two-thirds only.
  3. Leave the top edge slightly open like a tiny pouch.
  4. Sew or tie the bag to the end of the crossbody strap.

Separate Sunflower Purse Beside the Doll

The image also shows a small sunflower purse lying beside the zebra. It has a brown strap and a sunflower face.

  1. Make one sunflower bag front using the same instructions as the crossbody bag.
  2. Make one plain brown back circle with 24 stitches around.
  3. Join the two circles with sc around the edges.
  4. For the handle, ch 42 with brown yarn.
  5. Slip stitch back across the chain for strength.
  6. Sew both ends of the handle to the top sides of the purse.

This small purse should sit flat when placed beside the zebra. Do not overstuff it. A single layer of soft stuffing inside is enough to give it gentle thickness.

Tiny Crochet Bees

Make two bees. They are small oval bees with yellow bodies, black stripes, black heads, and white wings. Use a 2.0 mm hook for a compact shape.

Bee Body

  1. R1: With yellow, make 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc around. (12)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat around. (18)

  7. R7: With black, sc around. (18)
  8. R8: With yellow, sc 1, dec; repeat around. (12)
  9. R9: With black, dec around. (6)

Stuff lightly before closing. Sew the opening shut. Embroider two tiny black eyes on the yellow face area if desired.

Bee Wings

Make four wings total, two for each bee.

  1. With white, ch 5.
  2. Starting in second ch from hook: sc 1, hdc 1, dc 1, 3 hdc in last ch.
  3. Work down the other side: hdc 1, sc 1, sl st 1.
  4. FO with long tail.

Sew two wings to the top of each bee, angled outward. The bees should look soft and rounded, like the small flying garden bees beside the zebra in the image.

Facial Details

The face is simple, sweet, and symmetrical. The safety eyes sit above the large muzzle. The cheeks have soft pink blush, and the muzzle remains plain gray with no oversized embroidered mouth.

  • Place the eyes between R13 and R14 of the head, about 9 stitches apart.
  • Use blush pink yarn to make 3 short horizontal stitches below each eye.
  • Use dark gray yarn to add two tiny nostril stitches near the lower front of the muzzle.
  • Do not add a large smile; the image has a calm, gentle expression.
  • Shape the muzzle with your hands so it points slightly forward and downward.

Body Assembly

Before sewing, pin every piece into place. This step prevents the doll from looking unbalanced. The image shows the zebra standing upright with arms relaxed, feet facing forward, and the head centered over the body.

  1. Sew the neck firmly to the top of the body.
  2. Sew the head to the neck, checking that the muzzle faces straight forward.
  3. Sew the ears on the upper sides of the head, angled outward.
  4. Add the mane from the top center of the head down the back.
  5. Sew the arms to the sides of the upper body, slightly below the shoulders.
  6. Sew the legs inside the two shorts openings.
  7. Sew the feet to the lower legs, with toes pointing forward.
  8. Attach the tail to the back lower body.
  9. Add the overall straps and buttons after the head and arms are stable.
  10. Sew the small sunflower to the head near one ear.
  11. Sew the sunflower applique to the center front of the overalls.
  12. Place the crossbody strap diagonally and attach the sunflower bag at the side.

Striping Tips for a Clean Zebra Look

Because the zebra uses many stripes, clean color changes are important. Always pull the unused yarn tail snugly inside the work, but do not pull so tightly that the piece bends. For the head stripes, keep the charcoal and gray sections irregular rather than perfectly even.

The arms and legs should have more regular horizontal bands. This contrast makes the doll look closer to the photo: playful striped limbs, a rounded ivory face, and a dark gray muzzle with strong texture.

Sunflower Placement Guide

  • Hat sunflower: large and flat, centered on the hat.
  • Head sunflower: small, placed near the left ear with green leaves underneath.
  • Bib sunflower: small and centered on the blue overall front.
  • Crossbody sunflower bag: larger, hanging near the lower side of the body.
  • Separate purse: placed beside the doll with a brown handle.

Optional Table Display Setup

To display the finished crochet set like the image, place the zebra upright in the center. Put the sunflower hat to one side, the separate purse on the other side, and the two bees near the upper side of the display.

This arrangement makes the full garden theme clear. The bright sunflowers, bees, overalls, striped zebra body, and tiny accessories all work together as one complete handmade set.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After all pieces are attached, check the doll from the front, side, and back. Add extra stitches anywhere that feels loose, especially around the head, ears, straps, and feet. Use matching yarn tails so the finishing stitches disappear into the crochet texture.

Brush the mane gently with your fingers and trim uneven strands. Add the cheek blush last so it stays clean and soft. The face should look friendly, balanced, and gentle, with the large muzzle as the main feature.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with a slightly damp cloth.
  • Do not soak if safety eyes, buttons, or glued decorations are used.
  • Let the doll air dry fully before storing.
  • Keep the sunflower petals flat by shaping them with your fingers after cleaning.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round and centered.
  • The muzzle is large, gray, oval, and firmly stuffed.
  • The ears stand upright and angle outward.
  • The mane is short, fluffy, and trimmed neatly.
  • The overalls fit snugly with two straps and two buttons.
  • The arms and legs show clean zebra stripes.
  • The sandals have tan soles and brown straps.
  • All sunflower details are attached securely.
  • The bees have black stripes and white wings.
  • The crossbody strap sits diagonally across the chest.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished Sunflower Garden Zebra in a dry place away from strong sunlight. Long exposure to direct sun can fade the yellow flowers, blue overalls, and gray stripes. If the doll is used as a display piece, dust it lightly with a soft brush.

For small stains, use cool water and mild soap on a cloth. Dab gently instead of rubbing. Reshape the muzzle, ears, petals, and overalls while damp, then allow everything to dry naturally on a towel.

If gifting the doll to a child, replace safety eyes and buttons with embroidered details. Check every sewn flower, strap, bee wing, and sandal piece before giving it away. Secure finishing makes the doll safer, neater, and longer lasting.
