This Christmas Deer knitting pattern makes a sweet seated woodland doll with a soft beige face, light brown head, rounded ears, tiny embroidered lashes, a black nose, pink cheeks, a red Fair Isle dress, white capelet, crossbody winter bag, red boots, holly leaves, berries, a Santa hat, and tiny gift props.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US English knitting terms and is designed as a detailed knitted doll pattern inspired by the pictured Christmas deer. The deer is made as a soft toy with a rounded head, small body, sitting legs, simple arms, shaped ears, removable clothing-style details, and festive accessories.

The sample is knitted at a tight toy gauge so the stuffing does not show through. Most body pieces are worked in the round, while the cape, bag flap, Santa hat brim, holly leaves, and some clothing details are worked flat. Read each section before starting, especially the colorwork rows.

  • Finished height: about 9.5 in / 24 cm seated, not including ears.
  • Skill level: adventurous beginner to intermediate.
  • Main methods: knitting in the round, increases, decreases, simple stranded colorwork, mattress stitch, embroidery, and basic shaping.
  • Construction: separate knitted pieces are stuffed, seamed, and assembled to match the picture.

Materials

  • Yarn weight: DK or light worsted yarn. Use the same yarn weight throughout for the best proportions.
  • Main head/body yarn A: warm light beige, about 60 yd.
  • Top head and limbs yarn B: soft taupe brown, about 45 yd.
  • Dress red yarn C: true Christmas red, about 55 yd.
  • White yarn D: bright white, about 55 yd.
  • Black yarn E: small amount for nose and mouth embroidery.
  • Green yarn F: small amount for holly leaves and one gift.
  • Berry red yarn G: small amount for holly berries.
  • Light blue embroidery thread: small amount for snowflake on bag.
  • Pink embroidery thread: small amount for cheeks.
  • Needles: US 3 / 3.25 mm double-pointed needles or long circular needle for magic loop.
  • Flat knitting needle: US 3 / 3.25 mm, optional for flat pieces.
  • Stuffing: polyester fiberfill.
  • Safety eyes: two black 6 mm eyes, or embroider eyes for a child-safe finish.
  • Gold beads or bells: two small optional boot bells.
  • Other tools: tapestry needle, stitch markers, pins, row counter, scissors, removable stitch holders.

Gauge

Gauge: 28 sts and 36 rounds = 4 in / 10 cm in stockinette stitch using US 3 / 3.25 mm needles, measured after stuffing lightly. Gauge is important for a firm toy fabric. A looser gauge may show stuffing, so go down one needle size if needed.

The pictured deer has dense, smooth knitting with visible vertical stitches on the face and body. The fabric should feel firm but not stiff. When stuffed, the head should stay rounded without stretching the stitches open.

Abbreviations

  • CO: cast on.
  • BO: bind off.
  • k: knit.
  • p: purl.
  • st / sts: stitch / stitches.
  • rnd / rnds: round / rounds.
  • RS: right side.
  • WS: wrong side.
  • kfb: knit into the front and back of the same stitch, increasing 1 stitch.
  • m1: make 1 stitch by lifting the strand between stitches and knitting through the back loop.
  • k2tog: knit 2 stitches together, decreasing 1 stitch.
  • ssk: slip 1 knitwise, slip 1 knitwise, knit slipped stitches together through the back loops.
  • p2tog: purl 2 stitches together.
  • st st: stockinette stitch. Knit every round when working in the round. Knit RS and purl WS when working flat.
  • garter stitch: knit every row when working flat.

Important Pattern Notes

  • Use a tight cast-on and small needles so each piece keeps a rounded toy shape.
  • Leave long yarn tails on all small pieces. The tails are used for sewing.
  • Stuff gradually. The head should be firm, while the arms, ears, and cape should remain lighter.
  • For colorwork, carry the unused yarn loosely across the wrong side. Do not pull tightly, or the dress will pucker.
  • The white face patches are shaped by knitting the front of the head in beige and the upper skull in taupe. This creates the deer’s soft mask effect.
  • All embroidery is added after assembly so you can place the expression accurately.

The head is a large rounded oval with a pale face, taupe upper head, and small white forehead speckles. Work in the round from the bottom neck upward. Use A for the pale face and B for the taupe top section.

Forehead Speckles

The pictured deer has small white teardrop-like stitches scattered down the taupe forehead. Embroider these after the head is stuffed. Use short vertical duplicate stitches in white yarn D.

  • Make one center speckle about 4 rounds above the eyes.
  • Make two speckles one round higher and 3 sts apart.
  • Make two more speckles near the upper forehead, 5 sts apart.
  • Keep each speckle only 1 knitted stitch wide and 1 to 2 rounds tall.

Body

The body is shaped like a small pear under the dress. Use the main body color A for the upper chest and hidden torso. The red dress is knitted separately and placed over it, allowing the deer to sit neatly like the image.

  • Sew the pom-pom to the tip of the Santa hat.

Tiny Gift Props

The picture includes small knitted gifts beside the deer. Make two or three simple cubes in red, green, and blue. These props are optional, but they help the finished display match the festive scene.

Gift Cube

  1. With gift color of choice, CO 8 sts.
  2. Rows 1-8: k every row to make a garter square.
  3. Make 6 squares total for one cube.
  4. Sew five squares together into an open box shape.

  7. Use contrasting yarn to embroider a ribbon line around the center of the cube.
  8. Add a tiny bow by tying a small yarn knot on top.

Facial Features

The deer’s face is gentle, simple, and slightly sleepy. The expression comes from the black oval nose, tiny vertical mouth line, curved lashes, glossy black eyes, and pale pink cheek stitches.

Nose

  1. Thread a tapestry needle with black yarn E.
  2. Embroider a small rounded triangle centered between the eyes, about 5 rounds below eye level.
  3. Make horizontal satin stitches across 4 sts for the widest part.
  4. Work shorter stitches above and below to create a soft oval-triangle nose.
  5. Bring the yarn down 3 rounds from the nose point and make one straight vertical mouth stitch.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Lashes and Closed Brow Lines

  • Use one strand of black yarn or embroidery thread for delicate lines.
  • Beside each eye, stitch one short curved lash angling outward.
  • Above each cheek area, stitch one soft curved line to suggest the peaceful deer expression.
  • Keep all facial stitches loose enough that they do not dent the stuffed head.

Pink Cheeks

  • Using pink embroidery thread, make 2 or 3 tiny horizontal stitches on each cheek.
  • Place the cheeks slightly below the eyes and toward the outer face.
  • Do not make the cheek stitches too dark. The effect should be soft and subtle.

Assembly Order

Assembly is the most important part of this project. Pin every piece before sewing. The deer should look balanced from the front, with ears high, arms at the sides, legs centered under the dress, and the bag resting at the lower right front.

  1. Sew the body to the bottom of the head. The widest part of the face should point forward.
  2. Sew the legs to the lower front of the body, spaced about 8 sts apart. Angle the feet forward.
  3. Place the red dress over the body. Adjust the hem so it sits just above the boots.
  4. Sew the shoulder straps to the dress and secure the dress lightly to the body at the back.
  5. Sew the arms to the upper sides of the body, just below the neck.
  6. Wrap the capelet around the shoulders. The red patterned panels should face forward.
  7. Tie or cross the white cape ties at the front. Stitch them discreetly so they stay in place.
  8. Sew the ears to the top sides of the head, about 12 rounds above the eyes. Angle them outward.
  9. Sew the holly leaves and berry cluster near the base of the deer’s left ear.
  10. Place the bag strap diagonally across the chest and sew the bag to the right side of the dress.
  11. Add boots to the feet and secure the cuffs around the lower legs.
  12. Finish all facial embroidery after the head and ears are attached.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After the main sewing is complete, hold the deer at arm’s length and check the symmetry. The eyes should sit evenly, the nose should be centered, and the ears should mirror each other. Add the white forehead speckles last so they follow the finished head shape.

Steam is not recommended for the stuffed toy body. Instead, use your fingers to smooth the stitches. Shape the dress hem, cape corners, and bag flap gently by pinching them into place.

  • Use small hidden stitches when attaching clothing pieces.
  • Keep the cape opening visible at the front.
  • Let the bag hang slightly lower than the deer’s hand.
  • Make the boots touch at the inner edges for the seated pose.

Care Notes

Spot clean the finished Christmas Deer with cool water and a small amount of gentle soap. Avoid soaking the toy if you used safety eyes, beads, bells, or mixed fibers. Press with a towel and let the deer air dry completely.

  • Do not machine wash if the toy has bells, beads, or glued details.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Brush away dust with a soft dry cloth.
  • Store the Santa hat and tiny gifts in the same box as the deer.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Head is firm, rounded, and sewn straight to the body.
  • Face has two black eyes, black nose, vertical mouth line, lashes, cheeks, and white forehead speckles.
  • Both ears are securely attached and angled upward.
  • Dress has a white hem, red skirt, white snow dots, and patterned yoke.
  • Capelet sits around the shoulders with white edging and red patterned panels.
  • Crossbody bag has a visible blue snowflake.
  • Boots are red with white cuffs and optional gold side bells.
  • Holly leaves and berries are attached near the left ear.
  • Santa hat and tiny gift props are complete for display.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the deer’s shape, store it upright or lying flat in a breathable cotton bag. Avoid compressing the ears, cape, or bag strap for long periods. Keep the toy away from direct sunlight so the red dress and boots stay bright.

For seasonal storage, wrap the deer loosely in acid-free tissue paper. Place small accessories, such as the Santa hat and gifts, in a separate pouch so they do not pull on the knitted fabric. Check embroidered details before displaying each year.

  • Refresh the shape by gently massaging the stuffing through the knitted fabric.
  • Trim only loose fiber fuzz, not embroidery ends.
  • Repair small loose seams with matching yarn and a tapestry needle.
  • Keep away from pets and very young children if beads or bells are attached.

Finishing Thought

Your Christmas Deer is now ready for a cozy holiday display. With the rounded face, soft taupe ears, red winter dress, patterned capelet, little bag, red boots, holly detail, Santa hat, and tiny gifts, the finished doll should closely capture the festive charm shown in the reference image.
