Knitting Tutorial: Daisy Flower Girl – Free Knitting Pattern

This cheerful knit Daisy Flower Girl is a soft garden doll with a round yellow flower face, white daisy petals, sleepy embroidered eyes, rosy cheeks, green arms and legs, a blue-and-white striped sundress, matching sandals, a sunny straw-style hat, a tiny blue shoulder bag, and small garden friends including bees and a ladybug.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written to recreate the toy shown in the image as closely as possible with knitted pieces, shaped seams, embroidery, and small accessories. The doll is worked mostly in the round for a smooth stuffed finish, with flat pieces used where a flatter shape is needed, such as the daisy petals, dress straps, hat brim, bag flap, wings, and flower appliqués.

The finished doll has a large daisy head that sits wider than the body. The face is a soft yellow oval with a slightly flattened front, framed by rounded white petals. The body is small and simple so the flower head remains the main focus. The green arms and legs are slim and straight, matching the stem-like style in the image.

  • Finished doll height: about 13 inches from top petal to bottom sandal.
  • Head width with petals: about 7 1/2 inches across.
  • Body height without head: about 6 1/2 inches.
  • Skill level: adventurous beginner to intermediate.
  • Knitting style: small toy knitting, mostly stockinette in the round.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in soft yellow for the flower face and hat.
  • Worsted weight yarn in white or cream for the daisy petals and flower appliqués.
  • Worsted weight yarn in leaf green for arms, legs, and body base.
  • Worsted weight yarn in sky blue for dress stripes, sandals, bag, and hat ribbon.
  • Worsted weight yarn in white for dress stripes and bee wings.
  • Small amounts of pink, lavender, golden yellow, black, dark brown, and red yarn or embroidery floss.
  • US size 4 double-pointed needles, or size needed to get a firm toy fabric.
  • US size 4 straight needles for petals, straps, and flat accessories.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Two small yellow buttons for the dress straps.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Scrap yarn or stitch holders.
  • Optional: two tiny black beads for insect eyes, only if the toy is for display and not for a child.

Gauge and Fabric Notes

Use a tight gauge so stuffing does not show through the stitches. The sample look in the image has a smooth stockinette texture with visible knit V stitches, so do not use a loose fabric. If your stitches look open, go down one needle size. If the pieces feel stiff and hard to stuff, go up one needle size.

  • Suggested gauge: 6 stitches and 8 rounds per inch in stockinette stitch.
  • Best fabric: firm, smooth, and lightly stretchy.
  • Stuffing style: stuff firmly in the head, lightly in the petals, and medium-firm in limbs.

Abbreviations

  • K: knit.
  • P: purl.
  • St or sts: stitch or stitches.
  • Rnd: round.
  • CO: cast on.
  • BO: bind off.
  • Kfb: knit into the front and back of the same stitch, increasing 1 stitch.
  • K2tog: knit 2 stitches together, decreasing 1 stitch.
  • SSK: slip 1 stitch knitwise, slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit the slipped stitches together through the back loops.
  • M1: make 1 stitch by lifting the bar between stitches and knitting into the back of it.
  • Rep: repeat.
  • RS: right side.
  • WS: wrong side.
  • I-cord: knit a small tube by knitting stitches, sliding them back to the other end of the needle, and knitting again without turning.

Construction Notes

The flower girl is made from separate pieces and assembled at the end. The head is a stuffed yellow oval. The petals are knitted separately and sewn around the back edge of the face. The body is a small green stuffed torso covered by a striped dress. The legs, sandals, arms, hat, bag, bees, ladybug, and embroidered garden details are added after the main doll is complete.

For the most photo-like result, keep the head larger than the body, angle the arms slightly downward, place the legs close together, and let the dress flare gently over the hips. The sandals should sit flat and rounded, with a blue strap across the foot and a white daisy at the outer side of each shoe.

Yellow Daisy Face Head

Work the head in the round with yellow yarn. It should become a soft oval disc, not a tall ball. The front should be smooth and gently domed, while the back can be slightly flatter because the petals will cover the outer edge.

Raised Nose and Face Shaping

The small yellow nose in the image is a short horizontal bump centered low on the face. It is not a separate large muzzle. Use yellow yarn and duplicate-stitch padding to build a soft oval nose.

  1. Place the closed decrease end at the back of the head.
  2. Choose the front center of the face. The nose should sit slightly below the center line.
  3. With yellow yarn, make 6 horizontal satin stitches across 4 knit stitches.
  4. Make 4 more shorter satin stitches over the center to raise the nose.
  5. Pull gently, but do not tighten so much that the face puckers.

White Daisy Petals

Make 12 petals. The image shows broad, rounded petals with soft stockinette centers and slightly curled edges. Each petal is knitted flat, folded lightly by the seam, and sewn around the yellow head like a daisy crown. Petals should overlap just a little.

Petal Pattern

  1. With white yarn, CO 6 sts.
  2. Row 1, WS: P all sts.
  3. Row 2, RS: K1, kfb, K2, kfb, K1. 8 sts.
  4. Row 3: P all sts.

  8. Rows 7-17: Work stockinette stitch, purling WS rows and knitting RS rows.
  9. Row 18: K1, ssk, K6, k2tog, K1. 10 sts.
  10. Row 19: P all sts.
  11. Row 20: K1, ssk, K4, k2tog, K1. 8 sts.
  12. Row 21: P all sts.
  13. Row 22: K1, ssk, K2, k2tog, K1. 6 sts.
  14. Row 23: P all sts.
  15. Row 24: K1, ssk, k2tog, K1. 4 sts.
  16. Row 25: P all sts.
  17. Row 26: K2tog twice. 2 sts.
  18. Cut yarn and pull through remaining sts.

Lightly block the petals by smoothing them with your fingers. Do not flatten them completely. A little puffiness helps the daisy frame look soft and plush.

Petal Placement

  • Lay the yellow head face down.
  • Pin 12 petals around the back outer edge.
  • Place 3 petals across the top, 3 across the bottom, and 3 on each side.
  • Overlap petal bases by about 1/4 inch.
  • Sew each petal base securely to the back edge of the head using white yarn.
  • Add a second hidden seam around the petal bases with yellow yarn to prevent gaps.

Green Body Base

The torso is mostly hidden by the dress, but it gives the doll structure. It should be small and narrower than the head. Work in green yarn to match the arms and legs.

  1. With green yarn, CO 24 sts. Divide and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Rep K3, kfb around. 30 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: K all sts.
  5. Rnd 4: Rep K4, kfb around. 36 sts.

  10. Rnd 22: K all sts.
  11. Rnd 23: Rep K2, k2tog around. 18 sts.
  12. Stuff the body firmly at the lower half and slightly softer near the neck.
  13. Rnd 24: Rep K1, k2tog around. 12 sts.
  14. Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull closed, and secure.

Green Legs

Make 2 slim green legs. The legs are long compared with the small body and sit close together below the dress. Leave the lower end slightly rounded so it fits inside the sandal.

  1. With green yarn, CO 12 sts. Divide and join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-28: K every round.
  3. Rnd 29: Rep K4, k2tog twice. 10 sts.
  4. Rnd 30: K all sts.
  5. Stuff the leg lightly but evenly.
  6. Rnd 31: K2tog around. 5 sts.
  7. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull closed, and secure.

Repeat for the second leg. The top opening may be left slightly flexible so the legs can be sewn flat under the dress.

Make 2 arms. The arms in the image are long, rounded, and slightly tapered at the wrist. They hang downward along the sides of the dress.

  1. With green yarn, CO 10 sts. Divide and join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-4: K every round.
  3. Rnd 5: Kfb, K8, kfb. 12 sts.

  6. Rnd 25: K all sts.
  7. Stuff lightly, keeping the arm soft and bendable.
  8. Rnd 26: K2tog around. 5 sts.
  9. Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull closed, and secure.

Blue and White Striped Sundress

The dress is the main clothing piece. It has horizontal sky-blue and white stripes, a flared skirt, a pale scalloped blue hem, embroidered butterflies and grass near the lower front, and two shoulder straps with tiny yellow buttons.

The dress is worked from the bottom up in the round. Use blue for the hem, then alternate blue and white stripes. The lower edge has a soft scalloped look created by small picot-style points.

  5. Rnd 43: K all sts.
  6. BO all sts loosely.

Weave in yarn tails neatly on the inside. Slip the dress onto the body from the feet upward before attaching the head if possible. If the head is already attached, use a loose bind-off so the dress can pass over the legs and body.

Make 2 blue straps. The straps sit over the shoulders and fasten with yellow buttons on the front bodice, just like the image.

  1. With blue yarn, CO 5 sts.
  2. Rows 1-22: K every row for garter stitch.
  3. BO all sts.
  4. Sew one end of each strap to the back upper edge of the bodice.
  5. Bring straps over the shoulders after head and arms are attached.
  6. Sew the front ends to the bodice and attach one small yellow button on each front strap end.

Dress Embroidery

The image shows small embroidered garden details across the lower front of the dress. Keep the designs delicate so they do not overpower the stripes.

  • Pink butterfly: On the lower left front, make two lazy-daisy wing loops in pink and two smaller loops in lavender. Add a dark brown body and antennae.
  • Blue butterfly: Near the center lower front, make two blue wing loops and two tiny yellow wing accents. Add a dark body.
  • Yellow butterfly: On the lower right front, make two pale yellow wings with brown body and antennae.
  • Grass stitches: Use green yarn to make short straight stitches between butterflies.
  • Curly trail: Use dark brown or blue to make one small curved flight trail near the center butterfly.

Blue Sandals

  2. With white yarn, make 6 tiny petal loops around the yellow center.
  3. Secure one flower to the outside edge of each sandal strap.

Sun Hat

  6. Rnds 25-29: K every round.
  7. Rnd 30: P all sts for a neat brim edge.
  8. BO loosely.

Flatten the brim gently with your hands. Do not over-block it, because the photo-style hat has a soft handmade curve rather than a stiff edge.

  2. Knit 48 rows in garter stitch.
  3. BO all sts.
  4. Wrap around the base of the hat crown and sew the ends at one side.

  2. Using white yarn, make 7 small lazy-daisy petals around the center.
  3. Secure all tails on the inside of the flap.

Bees

Make 2 tiny bees, as shown around the doll. One bee rests near the hat and one is near the lower left side. Each bee has a yellow-and-black striped body and small white wings.

  6. BO all sts.
  7. Make 2 wings per bee and sew them to the top of the striped body.

Ladybug

The red ladybug is a tiny garden prop with a rounded red back, black head, and black spots. Keep it small so it looks like a cute accessory rather than another main toy.

  1. With red yarn, CO 8 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb around. 16 sts.
  4. Rnds 3-7: K all sts.

  9. With black yarn, embroider a small head at one end.
  10. Embroider a center line down the red back.
  11. Add 3 black French knots or tiny satin spots on each side.

Face Embroidery

The face gives the doll its sweet expression. The eyes are closed and curved, with small lashes. The cheeks are round pink circles. Work slowly and place all details before knotting your yarn.

  • Eyes: Use dark brown or black embroidery floss. Each eye is a soft curved line about 1 inch long. Place both eyes slightly above the nose.
  • Lashes: Add 2 short stitches at the outer end of each eye, angled upward.
  • Cheeks: Use pink yarn or floss. Make a small spiral or satin-filled oval on each side of the nose.
  • Face spacing: Keep the cheeks low and wide, near the lower sides of the yellow face.
  • Expression: Do not add a mouth. The sleepy closed eyes and little nose create the peaceful look from the image.

Attaching the Main Doll Pieces

  1. Sew the legs to the lower front of the green body, spacing them about 1/2 inch apart.
  2. Slide the striped dress over the legs and body. Adjust the skirt so the scalloped hem sits evenly.
  3. Sew the dress lightly to the body at the upper edge so it does not twist.
  4. Sew the arms to the upper sides of the body. Angle them downward so they rest beside the skirt.
  5. Sew the flower head to the top of the body. Use a strong ladder stitch and go around the neck twice.
  6. Attach the dress straps over the shoulders. Add the yellow buttons on the front.
  7. Place the sandals on the feet and sew around the soles and ankle bands to secure.

Photo-Match Shaping Tips

  • Keep the head slightly tilted to one side for a gentle handmade look.
  • Let the petals spread flat around the face, but do not pull them tight.
  • The upper petals should sit behind the face like a crown, while the lower petals should peek over the dress neckline.
  • The dress should flare outward from the waist and stop above the ankles.
  • The arms should be visible outside the dress and should not be hidden behind the body.
  • The shoes should be wide and rounded, with the green foot showing through the front opening.
  • The hat, bag, bees, and ladybug should be small accessories, not larger than the doll’s face details.

Optional Inner Neck Support

Because the flower head is larger than the body, the neck seam needs to be stable. For a soft toy, use only yarn and extra stitches. For a display doll, you may roll a small piece of firm felt or fabric and place it inside the upper body before sewing on the head.

  • Do not use wire for a child’s toy.
  • For a child-safe version, reinforce the neck with several rounds of strong sewing using matching yarn.
  • Check that the head does not wobble before adding final details.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After all pieces are sewn, check the doll from the front, side, and top. The daisy face should be centered, the petals should form an even ring, and the body should sit directly below the face. Adjust any loose petals with hidden stitches.

Use a tapestry needle to tuck all yarn tails deep into the body. Smooth the cheeks, nose, and embroidery with your fingers. Add the tiny insects and accessories around the doll for the full garden display shown in the image.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not wring the doll, because the petals and dress may stretch.
  • Lay flat to dry on a towel.
  • Keep embroidered details away from rough surfaces.
  • If buttons are used, check them regularly for secure attachment.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The yellow face is smooth, rounded, and wider than the body.
  • There are 12 white petals arranged evenly around the head.
  • The closed eyes, lashes, pink cheeks, and raised yellow nose are centered and balanced.
  • The dress has blue-and-white stripes, a scalloped blue hem, and garden embroidery.
  • Both straps have small yellow buttons at the front.
  • The green arms and legs are slim and softly stuffed.
  • The sandals are blue with white daisy decorations.
  • The hat has a blue ribbon and a tiny bee accent.
  • The blue bag has a long strap and a white daisy on the flap.
  • The bees and ladybug are small, neat, and securely finished.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the doll’s shape, store it flat or sitting with the flower head supported. Avoid hanging it by the bag strap, arms, or petals. If the petals become compressed, gently reshape them with clean fingers and allow the doll to rest flat overnight.

For long-term display, keep the doll away from direct sunlight to protect the yellow, blue, green, and pink yarn colors. Store the tiny bees, ladybug, hat, and bag together in a small fabric pouch when not displayed so the full garden set stays complete.
