Knitting Tutorial: Spring Ladybug holding Flower – Free Knitting Pattern

This cheerful spring ladybug doll is knitted as a soft garden friend with a rounded black head, cream face panel, red nose, rosy cheeks, curled antennae, red bows, striped blue-and-white dress, green crossbody bag, red sandals, and a pink flower in her hand. The scene also includes a tiny striped watering can and a yellow bee sunhat, so every visible accessory from the image is included.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US English knitting terms. The main doll is worked mostly in the round for a smooth stuffed-toy finish. Small decorative parts are worked flat, then sewn on carefully to create the rounded, handmade look shown in the photo.

The finished doll measures about 11 inches tall from the bottom of the sandals to the top of the head, or about 14 inches tall including the curved antennae. The small watering can is about 2 inches wide, and the yellow hat is about 3.5 inches across the brim.

  • Skill level: Confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Main techniques: Knit, purl, increase, decrease, simple color changes, I-cord, mattress stitch, embroidery, stuffing, and seaming.
  • Construction: Head, body, arms, legs, dress, sandals, antennae, bows, flower, bag, watering can, and hat are made separately and assembled at the end.
  • Recommended method: Work small round pieces on double-pointed needles, magic loop, or a small circular needle.

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in black, about 70 yd.
  • DK weight yarn in cream, about 35 yd.
  • DK weight yarn in sky blue, about 45 yd.
  • DK weight yarn in white, about 35 yd.
  • DK weight yarn in red, about 35 yd.
  • DK weight yarn in green, about 35 yd.
  • DK weight yarn in pink, about 20 yd.
  • DK weight yarn in yellow, about 25 yd.
  • Small scraps of light blue, tan, darker yellow, blush pink, and black embroidery yarn.
  • US 3 needles, 3.25 mm, for the toy pieces.
  • US 2 needles, 2.75 mm, for tiny appliques and firm accessories.
  • Polyester fiberfill stuffing.
  • Two 8 mm black safety eyes, or black felt circles if making for a young child.
  • Small amount of white felt or white knitted eye backing.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Removable stitch markers or safety pins for positioning parts.
  • Optional pipe cleaners or soft craft wire for poseable antennae and flower stem.
  • Optional pink powder blush or pink yarn for cheeks.

Gauge

Gauge is important because the doll needs firm fabric that holds stuffing without gaps. In stockinette stitch using US 3 needles, aim for about 24 stitches and 34 rounds over 4 inches. For accessories on US 2 needles, aim for a tighter fabric, about 28 stitches and 38 rows over 4 inches.

For a toy, exact gauge is less important than firmness. If stuffing shows through the stitches, go down one needle size. If the fabric feels stiff and difficult to sew, go up one needle size.

Care Notes

  • Do not machine wash if the doll contains wire, pipe cleaners, safety eyes, or blush powder.
  • Reshape the antennae, bows, and flower while damp if needed.
  • Allow the doll and accessories to air dry fully before storing.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The cream face panel is smooth and centered on the black head.
  • The eyes are even, with matching lashes and highlights.
  • The red nose sits between the eyes and above the smile.
  • The blue-and-white dress flares gently at the hem.
  • The strawberry embroidery is spaced across the dress.
  • The green bag crosses the body diagonally and has a white daisy.
  • The antennae curve outward and have red balls at the ends.
  • The red bows sit close to the antenna bases.
  • The sandals show black toes, red straps, cream trim, and pink flowers.
  • The flower, watering can, and yellow bee hat are complete.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished ladybug in a dry place away from strong sunlight, because bright yarn colors such as red, yellow, and sky blue may fade over time. Keep the flower petals and antennae from being crushed by placing the doll upright or wrapping it loosely in tissue paper.

For dust removal, use a soft brush and gently sweep over the knitted surface. Avoid pulling across embroidered details. If the doll is displayed with the watering can and hat, store the tiny accessories in a small labeled pouch when not in use.

If the doll is made for a child, replace safety eyes with embroidered eyes and leave out wire from the antennae and flower stem. Check all sewn parts regularly, especially the bows, sandals, bag strap, and flower stem, because small accessories should always be firmly attached.
