Knitting Tutorial: Cozy Giraffe in Blue Striped Sweater – Free Knitting Pattern.

This cozy knitted giraffe is designed as a sweet seated garden friend with long dangling legs, soft yellow body, brown giraffe spots, rounded muzzle, white raised eyes, tiny horns, floppy ears, and a blue striped sweater with embroidered flowers. The set also includes sandals, a small crossbody bag, a striped beanie, a mini pumpkin, a knitted cup, and a tiny broom-like accessory.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Finished giraffe height: about 12 in / 30.5 cm from sandal sole to horn tip when seated.
  • Seated body height: about 7 in / 18 cm from bottom to horn tip.
  • Leg length: about 4.5 in / 11.5 cm before sandals.
  • Beanie: about 3.25 in / 8 cm wide.
  • Pumpkin: about 1.75 in / 4.5 cm wide.
  • Bag: about 2 in / 5 cm tall with a long strap.

Skill Level

This pattern is best for confident beginners to intermediate knitters. The main techniques are knitting in the round, simple increases and decreases, seaming small pieces, stuffing firmly, duplicate stitch spots, basic embroidery, and i-cord details.

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in warm giraffe yellow, cream, medium blue, deep blue, giraffe brown, light tan, white, black, orange, green, pale pink, lavender, and soft blue.
  • US 2 / 2.75 mm double-pointed needles or long circular needle for magic loop.
  • US 3 / 3.25 mm needles for the sweater and beanie if you prefer a slightly softer fabric.
  • Polyester fiberfill stuffing.
  • Yarn needle for seaming and embroidery.
  • Two small black safety eyes or black yarn for pupils.
  • One tiny tan button for the bag flap.
  • Removable stitch markers.
  • Small amount of cardboard or plastic canvas for the bag base, optional.

Gauge

Gauge: 7 stitches and 10 rounds = 1 inch / 2.5 cm in stockinette stitch with DK yarn and US 2 needles. Gauge is important because the fabric should be dense enough to hide the stuffing.

For the best toy finish, knit firmly. If your stitches look open, move down one needle size. If your finished pieces feel too stiff to shape, move up one needle size but keep the stuffing controlled.

Abbreviations

  • CO: cast on.
  • K: knit.
  • P: purl.
  • St / sts: stitch / stitches.
  • Rnd / rnds: round / rounds.
  • RS: right side.
  • WS: wrong side.
  • Kfb: knit into the front and back of the same stitch, increasing 1 stitch.
  • K2tog: knit 2 stitches together, decreasing 1 stitch.
  • SSK: slip, slip, knit the 2 slipped stitches together.
  • St st: stockinette stitch.
  • BO: bind off.
  • I-cord: knit a small cord by sliding stitches back to the needle tip after each row.

Construction Notes

The giraffe is made from separate stuffed pieces and then sewn together. The legs are long and narrow, the body is rounded and pear-shaped, the neck is tall and slightly leaning, and the head has a long soft muzzle. The sweater is knitted separately and placed on the body before final arm placement.

Brown giraffe markings are made with duplicate stitch after the yellow pieces are knitted. This gives the soft spotted look shown in the image without making the small toy too difficult for beginners.

Giraffe Legs

Make two long yellow legs. They should be slim, flexible, and lightly stuffed so they can hang naturally from the table edge like the reference image.

  1. With yellow yarn and US 2 needles, CO 9 sts. Join in the round, being careful not to twist.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in every st around. You now have 18 sts.
  4. Rnds 3-5: K all sts.
  5. Rnd 6: K4, k2tog, K6, k2tog, K4. You now have 16 sts.
  6. Rnds 7-30: K all sts for a long straight leg.
  7. Rnd 31: K2tog, K6, k2tog, K6. You now have 14 sts.
  8. Rnds 32-36: K all sts.
  9. Stuff the leg lightly from the cast-on end. Keep it soft and bendable.
  10. Rnd 37: K2tog around. You now have 7 sts.
  11. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull closed, and secure.

For a rounded knee and ankle look, roll the leg gently between your palms after stuffing. Do not overstuff the lower leg because the sandals will sit better on a slightly soft foot area.

Giraffe Body

The body is rounded at the bottom, slightly wider through the belly, and narrower at the top where the sweater collar and neck sit. Use yellow yarn as the main color.

Body Spots

  • Using brown yarn, duplicate stitch 9 irregular spots onto the lower body that will show below the sweater.
  • Make each spot 3-6 stitches wide and 2-4 rows tall.
  • Place more spots at the sides and back, leaving the front center mostly clear because the sweater covers it.

Long Neck

The neck is tall, slim, and covered with brown giraffe markings. It rises from the sweater collar and leans slightly forward under the head.

  1. With yellow yarn, CO 18 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-6: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 7: K8, kfb, K9. You now have 19 sts.

  9. Stuff the neck firmly, but do not make it rock hard. A little bend helps the head sit naturally.
  10. BO all sts, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Neck Markings

  • Use brown yarn to duplicate stitch uneven spots along the back and sides of the neck.
  • Make a vertical row of spots down the back, each about 4 sts wide and 3 rows tall.
  • Add smaller side spots, keeping the front of the neck mostly yellow.
  • Use a few half-stitches at the edges so the markings look organic, not square.

Head and Muzzle

The head has a long soft yellow muzzle, a rounded top, and a slightly wider cheek area where the raised white eyes sit. Work the head in yellow and add brown spots later.

  1. With yellow yarn, CO 8 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in every st around. You now have 16 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: K all sts.

  7. Rnd 11: K6, kfb, K10, kfb, K6. You now have 26 sts.
  8. Rnd 12: K all sts.
  9. Rnd 13: K7, kfb, K10, kfb, K7. You now have 28 sts.

  18. Rnd 36: K3, k2tog around, ending K3. You now have 19 sts.
  19. Stuff the head firmly. Shape the muzzle long and gently oval with your fingers.
  20. Rnd 37: K1, k2tog around, ending K1. You now have 13 sts.
  21. Rnd 38: K2tog around, ending K1. You now have 7 sts.
  22. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull closed, and secure.

Mouth Shaping

  • Thread yellow yarn through a yarn needle.
  • Make one soft smiling line across the lower front of the muzzle, about 8 sts wide.
  • Pull gently to create a shallow curve, not a deep indentation.
  • Secure inside the head or under the neck join.

Head Spots

  • Use brown yarn to duplicate stitch irregular spots on the top and right side of the head.
  • Add one larger patch behind the eyes, about 7 sts wide and 5 rows tall.
  • Add 3 smaller patches around the back crown.
  • Keep the long front muzzle mostly plain yellow so the face stays soft and clear.

  2. Sew the tail to the lower back of the body.
  3. Place the sweater onto the body before attaching the neck if needed.
  4. Sew the neck securely to the top center of the body through the sweater collar opening.

  6. Sew ears to the sides of the head.

  11. Sew or place sandals onto the ends of the legs.
  12. Arrange the beanie, pumpkin, cup, and broom beside the giraffe for the complete picnic-table scene.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Use small, firm stitches for all seams. The head should feel secure, because the long neck carries visible weight. If the head tips too far forward, add a few hidden support stitches from the back of the head down into the neck.

  • Place the eyes close together for the playful look shown in the image.
  • Keep the mouth low on the muzzle and gently curved.
  • Add nostril dots with brown yarn if desired, using one small stitch on each side of the muzzle.
  • Brush the sweater lightly with your fingers only; do not use a hard brush.

Care Notes

This knitted giraffe is a decorative handmade toy. It is best for gentle display, photo styling, nursery shelf decor, or gifting to older children. If making for a young child, embroider all facial details instead of using safety eyes or buttons.

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if the bag button, pom-pom, or embroidery is attached.
  • Dry flat on a towel.
  • Reshape the neck, ears, and legs while damp.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The neck is tall, firm, and slightly forward leaning.
  • The muzzle is long, rounded, and mostly plain yellow.
  • The eyes are large, white, raised, and close together.
  • The sweater has cream, blue, and brown stripe details.
  • The bag crosses diagonally from shoulder to hip.
  • The legs hang naturally with sandals at the ends.
  • The beanie, pumpkin, cup, and broom are included as separate accessories.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished giraffe away from direct sunlight to protect the yellow and blue yarn colors. If dust collects on the toy, use a cool hair dryer on the lowest setting from a safe distance, or pat gently with a dry microfiber cloth.

For long-term storage, wrap the giraffe loosely in acid-free tissue paper. Do not compress the neck or horns. Keep the accessories in a small fabric pouch so the beanie, pumpkin, cup, bag, sandals, and broom stay together with the main knitted doll.
