Knitting Tutorial: Strawberry Panda Picnic Doll – Free Knitting Pattern.

This sweet knitted panda picnic doll wears a cream strawberry romper with red leg cuffs, red shoes, black panda arms, a soft lime-green bucket hat, a white daisy decoration, a tiny crossbody berry basket, and small strawberry-and-ladybug picnic accessories. The finished doll is designed with a round white panda head, black ears, black eye patches, embroidered lashes, and a gentle handmade expression.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

Using DK-weight yarn and US 2 needles, the finished panda doll measures about 10 inches tall from the bottom of the shoes to the top of the head, not including the hat brim. The head is intentionally large and rounded, while the body is smaller and pear-shaped to match the cute picnic-doll style shown in the image.

  • Head width: about 3.25 inches across when stuffed firmly.
  • Body length: about 4 inches from neck to bottom of romper.
  • Arm length: about 2.75 inches each.
  • Leg and shoe length: about 2 inches each from romper cuff to shoe toe.
  • Hat diameter: about 4.25 inches across the brim.
  • Basket: about 1.5 inches wide and 1.25 inches tall.

Skill Level

This pattern is suitable for confident beginners who can knit in the round, increase, decrease, sew small parts together, and add simple embroidery. The small strawberry details are added with duplicate stitch and surface embroidery, so the main knitting stays simple and neat.

Materials

  • Yarn weight: DK or light worsted yarn.
  • White yarn: panda head.
  • Black yarn: ears, arms, legs, eye patches, shoe soles, nose, mouth, and neck edge.
  • Cream yarn: strawberry romper.
  • Red yarn: strawberries, romper cuffs, shoes, tiny strawberry clip, and ladybug shell.
  • Leaf green yarn: strawberry leaves and small accents.
  • Lime-green yarn: bucket hat and long daisy strap.
  • White yarn scrap: daisy petals and eye highlights.
  • Yellow yarn scrap: daisy center.
  • Tan yarn: basket and basket strap.
  • Berry scraps: red, raspberry, navy, and purple for basket berries.
  • Needles: US 2 or 2.75 mm double-pointed needles, or a long circular needle for magic loop.
  • Small tapestry needle: for sewing and embroidery.
  • Fiberfill stuffing: for head, body, arms, legs, shoes, basket, and accessories.
  • Two 6 mm safety eyes: optional. Embroidered eyes may be used instead.
  • Stitch markers: for round beginning and center-front placement.
  • Small amount of black embroidery thread: optional for lashes and brows.

Gauge

Gauge is important because the doll should have tight fabric that keeps stuffing from showing. Work a firm stockinette fabric. If your stitches are loose, go down one needle size.

  • Gauge in stockinette: 7 stitches and 10 rounds = 1 inch.
  • Gauge for accessories: slightly tighter is better.
  • Stuffing style: firm but not stretched. The fabric should stay smooth and rounded.

Pattern Notes

The panda is worked in separate knitted pieces and sewn together. The head and body are knitted in the round for a smooth plush finish. The romper is knitted as part of the body, then decorated with duplicate-stitch strawberries after stuffing.

The shoes are built onto the lower legs using black, red, and cream edging to create the red sandal look shown in the image. The small cream outline around the shoe is embroidered after knitting, which keeps the shoe shape clean and easy to control.

The eye patches are knitted separately in black, sewn to the white head, and then detailed with eyes, white highlights, lashes, and brows. This gives the panda the same soft toy-like expression as the photographed doll.

Main Panda Head

Work the head in white yarn. Knit firmly and stuff gradually near the end. The shape should be round, slightly wider across the cheeks, and softly flattened at the front where the face details will be placed.

Black Panda Eye Patches

Make two black oval patches. They should sit low on the face, slightly angled, with the inner edges close to the nose area. The patches should be taller than they are wide, like soft teardrop ovals.

Make 2 Eye Patches

  1. With black yarn, CO 5 sts. Work flat.
  2. Row 1 RS: k all sts. 5 sts.
  3. Row 2 WS: p all sts.
  4. Row 3: kfb, k3, kfb. 7 sts.

  14. Row 17: slip 1, k2tog, pass slipped st over. 1 st.
  15. Cut yarn and pull through the last st. Leave a long tail for sewing.

Patch Placement

Pin the patches onto the head before sewing. The top of each patch should begin around Rnd 16 of the head, and the bottom should reach around Rnd 27. Leave about 7 white stitches between the inner edges at the widest part. Angle the outer tops slightly upward toward the ears.

Sew each patch with small whipstitches around the outer edge. Keep the patch flat and smooth. Do not over-pull the thread, because the face should remain round and soft.

Panda Ears

The ears are black, rounded, and small compared with the head. They sit at the upper sides of the head, partly behind the white face area, with a gentle forward tilt.

Make 2 Ears

  1. With black yarn, CO 18 sts. Join to work in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-4: k all sts. 18 sts.
  3. Rnd 5: k1, k2tog; rep around. 12 sts.
  4. Rnd 6: k all sts.
  5. Rnd 7: k2tog around. 6 sts.
  6. Cut yarn, thread through rem sts, pull closed, and weave in.
  7. Lightly stuff each ear. Flatten the cast-on edge into a half-moon shape.

Ear Placement

Sew the ears to the head between Rnds 8 and 17. Place one ear on each side, about 1 inch from the top center. The lower edge of each ear should tuck slightly behind the eye patch line, just like the photographed panda.

Body and Strawberry Romper

The body is worked from the shoes upward. The legs begin separately, then join into the cream romper. The romper is cream with red cuffs at the leg openings and a black neckline. Strawberries are added afterward with duplicate stitch.

Right Leg and Shoe

  1. With black yarn, CO 8 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts. 8 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb around. 16 sts.

  5. Rnds 4-5: k all sts in black. This forms the black toe and sole.
  6. Change to red yarn.
  7. Rnd 6: k all sts.
  8. Rnd 7: p all sts to create a raised red shoe edge.
  9. Rnds 8-10: k all sts in red.

Left Leg and Shoe

Work the left leg exactly as the right leg, but do not break the cream yarn after Rnd 25. Keep the stitches on the needles so the two legs can be joined.

Joining the Legs

  1. With the left leg on the needles and cream yarn attached, k across 24 sts of the left leg.
  2. CO 2 sts for the center front crotch.
  3. K across 24 sts of the right leg from the holder.
  4. CO 2 sts for the center back crotch. You now have 52 sts.
  5. Place a marker at the center back. This is now the beginning of the round.

Romper Body

  1. Rnd 1: k all 52 sts in cream.
  2. Rnd 2: k23, k2tog, k2, ssk, k23. 50 sts.
  3. Rnd 3: k all sts.
  4. Rnd 4: k all sts.
  5. Rnd 5: k8, k2tog; rep around. 45 sts.
  6. Rnds 6-13: k all sts in cream. Keep the fabric smooth and even.
  7. Rnd 14: k7, k2tog; rep around. 40 sts.
  8. Rnds 15-22: k all sts in cream.
  9. Rnd 23: k6, k2tog; rep around. 35 sts.
  10. Rnds 24-26: k all sts in cream.
  11. Change to black yarn for the panda neck band.

  13. Rnd 28: k5, k2tog; rep around. 30 sts.
  14. Rnd 29: k all sts in black.
  15. BO all sts loosely. Leave a long tail for sewing the head to the body.
  16. Stuff the legs first, then stuff the body firmly. Shape the belly so it is rounded at the lower front and narrower at the neck.

Red Shoe Details

The shoes in the image have red uppers, black centers, and light edging. These details are added after the legs are stuffed so the shoes keep a rounded doll shape.

Cream Shoe Outline

  1. Thread a tapestry needle with cream yarn.
  2. On each shoe, embroider one oval line around the black toe area.
  3. Place the oval across Rnds 4-8 of the foot, leaving a black center visible.
  4. Use small backstitches so the outline looks like a neat knitted shoe trim.

Red Shoe Strap

  1. With red yarn, CO 12 sts for each shoe strap.
  2. Row 1: k all sts.
  3. Row 2: p all sts.
  4. BO. Sew one strap across the top front of each shoe.

Green Strawberry Shoe Buttons

  1. With leaf green yarn, embroider three tiny straight stitches on the outer side of each shoe.
  2. With red yarn, add two small duplicate stitches under the green stitches to create a tiny strawberry button.
  3. Repeat on both shoes so they match the pictured red strawberry accents.

Black Panda Arms

The arms are black, narrow, and rounded at the ends. They hang slightly downward along the sides of the romper. Do not overstuff them; they should look soft and gently tapered.

Make 2 Arms

  1. With black yarn, CO 8 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts. 8 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb around. 16 sts.
  4. Rnds 3-6: k all sts.
  5. Rnd 7: k6, k2tog, k6, k2tog. 14 sts.
  6. Rnds 8-18: k all sts.
  7. Rnd 19: k5, k2tog, k5, k2tog. 12 sts.
  8. Rnds 20-22: k all sts.
  9. Lightly stuff the arm, keeping the top edge flatter than the paw end.
  10. BO all sts. Leave a long tail for sewing.

Arm Placement

Sew the arms to the upper sides of the body just below the black neck band. Place each arm so the top edge begins around Rnd 23 of the romper body. The arms should angle gently downward and slightly forward.

Strawberry Romper Decoration

The romper is covered with small red strawberries and green leafy tops. Use duplicate stitch so the strawberries sit neatly on top of the cream fabric. The front should have a fuller strawberry pattern than the back because it is the most visible part.

Duplicate-Stitch Strawberry Motif

Each strawberry uses a 5-stitch wide by 6-round tall space. Work from the bottom upward.

  • Motif Row 1: red duplicate stitch over 1 center stitch.
  • Motif Row 2: red duplicate stitch over 3 center stitches.
  • Motif Row 3: red duplicate stitch over 5 stitches.
  • Motif Row 4: red duplicate stitch over 5 stitches.
  • Motif Row 5: red duplicate stitch over 3 center stitches.
  • Motif Row 6: green duplicate stitch over 3 top stitches for the leafy cap.

Romper Shoulder Straps

The pictured romper has a sweet overall feeling, so add two narrow cream straps with red edging on the front upper body.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 4 sts.
  2. Rows 1-14: k every row for a garter strap.
  3. BO and make a second strap the same way.
  4. With red yarn, whipstitch lightly along both long edges of each strap.
  5. Sew one strap from the upper front chest over the shoulder line to the back neck band.
  6. Repeat with the second strap, spacing the two straps about 8 stitches apart at the front.
  7. Add one tiny duplicate-stitch strawberry at the front base of each strap.

Face Details

The panda face is soft and expressive. The eyes are round and glossy-looking, the lashes are short, the nose is small and black, and the mouth is a simple straight line down from the nose.

Eyes

  1. If using safety eyes, insert one eye in the center of each black patch before the head is fully closed. Place each eye around Rnd 22 of the head.
  2. If embroidering eyes, use black yarn or embroidery thread to make a small satin-stitched oval on each patch.
  3. With white yarn, add one small highlight stitch on the upper outer side of each eye.
  4. Add a second tiny white stitch near the lower inner edge if you want a brighter toy-like expression.

Nose and Mouth

  1. With black yarn, embroider a small horizontal oval nose between the eye patches, around Rnd 25 of the head.
  2. Make the nose about 5 stitches wide and 3 rounds tall.
  3. Use satin stitches from side to side until the nose looks smooth and full.
  4. From the bottom center of the nose, stitch one straight vertical line down for 5 rounds.
  5. Secure the yarn inside the head so the face remains clean.

Brows and Lashes

  1. Using black embroidery thread, stitch one curved brow above each eye patch.
  2. Each brow should be about 5 stitches long and sit 3 rounds above the eye.
  3. Add three short lashes to the outer side of each eye.
  4. Keep the lashes fine and slightly upward so the panda looks gentle and cute.

Lime-Green Bucket Hat

The hat is a separate accessory. It has a rounded crown, a short downward side, and a soft brim that flares outward. The lime color and white daisy match the picnic garden style in the image.

Hat Crown

  1. With lime-green yarn, CO 8 sts. Join in the round.

  6. Embroider one black line down the center of the red shell.
  7. Add three black dots on each side of the shell.
  8. Add two tiny white stitches on the black head for highlights.

Joining the Head and Body

Before sewing the head to the body, check that the face points directly forward and the strawberry romper center is aligned with the nose. This alignment is important because the doll has a symmetrical, front-facing look.

  1. Place the stuffed head on top of the black neck band.
  2. Use pins to hold the head in place.
  3. The bottom of the head should slightly overlap the black neck band so no stuffing is visible.
  4. Using the long black yarn tail from the body, sew around the neck twice.
  5. Pull gently after each few stitches so the head sits firmly but does not pucker.
  6. Hide the yarn end inside the body.

Attaching the Basket and Accessories

Place the basket strap diagonally from the panda’s left shoulder across the front to the right hip. The basket should rest over the lower right side of the romper, just above the red leg cuff. Sew the basket lightly to the body so it does not swing too much.

  1. Sew the top of the strap to the left shoulder area under the head.
  2. Let the strap cross over the chest naturally.
  3. Sew the basket to the right side of the belly with two or three hidden stitches.
  4. Sew the berries into the basket opening.
  5. Place the green daisy strap beside the doll, or tack it lightly to one hand if desired.
  6. Place the strawberry and ladybug accessories beside the doll, or sew them onto the hat brim for a decorated picnic version.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the doll from the front before securing all final yarn ends. The panda should have a round white head, black ears, centered black eye patches, a small black nose, a straight mouth line, black arms, red shoes, and a cream romper filled with little red strawberries.

  • Head: round, firm, and slightly larger than the body.
  • Ears: black, rounded, and evenly placed on both sides.
  • Eyes: centered inside the black patches with white highlights.

Care Notes

This doll is a decorative handmade item. If safety eyes are used, it is not recommended for children under 3 years old. For a child-safe version, embroider the eyes, nose, mouth, and all small details securely with yarn.

  • Spot clean gently with cool water.
  • Do not twist or wring the doll.
  • Let the doll air dry flat on a towel.
  • Keep the hat and basket separate during cleaning if they are not sewn on permanently.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • All yarn ends are woven in and hidden inside the doll.
  • The head is firmly attached and does not wobble.
  • The arms are even and angled downward.
  • The shoe outlines are stitched neatly around the black toe centers.
  • The strawberry motifs are spaced evenly across the romper.
  • The basket strap crosses the body diagonally and sits flat.
  • The daisy on the hat is sewn securely.
  • The face has matching brows, lashes, and eye highlights.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, avoid machine washing. Use a damp cloth with a tiny amount of mild soap for small marks. Blot the area instead of rubbing. After cleaning, reshape the head, shoes, hat brim, and basket with your fingers while the yarn is still slightly damp.

Store the panda in a dry place away from direct sunlight. If the doll will be displayed for a long time, gently dust it with a soft brush. Keep the small strawberry and ladybug accessories in a pouch when not displayed so they do not get lost.

For best long-term appearance, do not compress the doll under heavy items. The round head, bucket hat brim, berry basket, and stuffed shoes keep their shape best when stored upright or laid flat with plenty of space around them.
