Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US English knitting terms and is designed as a detailed soft toy pattern. The puppy is worked mostly in the round for smooth shaping, with some flat pieces for the ears, overalls details, flowers, blanket, and accessories.

The toy is shaped to sit like the image: a large rounded golden puppy head, smaller seated body, short rounded arms, plump legs, long floppy ears, and detailed clothing. The overalls are knitted directly as separate pieces and sewn on, giving the same layered garden outfit look.

  • Finished height: about 13 in from feet to top of head, or about 15 in including the watering can and flowerpot.
  • Skill level: confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Main method: small-circumference knitting in the round.
  • Construction: body, head, muzzle, ears, limbs, clothing, and accessories are knitted separately, stuffed, then assembled.
  • Best yarn weight: DK or light worsted for the puppy and clothes.

Materials

  • DK yarn in golden yellow for head, body, arms, legs, and ears, about 160 yd.
  • DK yarn in deep green for overalls, about 95 yd.
  • DK yarn in blue for striped sleeves, sweater collar, hat bow, and watering can trim, about 55 yd.
  • DK yarn in white for stripes, daisies, and flower petals, about 40 yd.
  • DK yarn in navy blue for sweater yoke, about 35 yd.
  • DK yarn in brown for nose, sandals, basket, and picnic basket handle, about 45 yd.
  • DK yarn in tan or straw beige for hat, sandal soles, picnic basket lid, and watering can, about 50 yd.
  • DK yarn in red for strawberry and ladybug details, small amount.
  • DK yarn in orange for carrot, small amount.
  • DK yarn in pink for tongue and small flower, small amount.
  • DK yarn in green for flower stems and carrot top, small amount.
  • Pair of 16 mm black safety eyes with brown or tan felt backing circles.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • US 3, 3.25 mm double-pointed needles or circular needles for magic loop.
  • US 2, 2.75 mm needles for smaller accessories if you want firmer detail.
  • Tapestry needle, stitch markers, removable stitch markers, pins, scissors.
  • Two tiny wooden-look buttons, about 8 mm, for overall straps.
  • Optional: black embroidery thread for mouth line and toe lines.

Gauge

For a firm toy fabric, aim for about 24 stitches and 32 rounds over 4 in in stockinette stitch using DK yarn and US 3 needles. Exact gauge is less important than a tight fabric that keeps stuffing hidden.

If your stitches are loose, go down one needle size. If your fabric is stiff and difficult to knit, go up one needle size, but keep the stuffing from showing through the knitted surface.

Important Knitting Notes

Most rounded pieces begin with a small cast-on and are shaped with steady increases. Stuff pieces firmly but gently, keeping the shape smooth and rounded. The puppy should feel full, not hard.

Use mattress stitch for visible seams. For small details such as daisies, strawberry seeds, toe lines, and mouth line, use short embroidery stitches after the knitted pieces are attached.

  • Place a stitch marker at the beginning of every round.
  • Leave long yarn tails for sewing when binding off small parts.
  • Stuff the head and body before fully closing the final opening.
  • Pin all pieces in place before sewing to check balance and expression.
  • Keep the puppy seated by stuffing the lower body and legs firmly.

Golden Puppy Head

The head is the largest shape in the pattern. It is nearly round but slightly taller than wide, matching the image. Work in golden yellow yarn in the round.

Sew the bow to the front brim of the hat. Let the two knitted ties hang slightly to the side, matching the casual garden picnic look.

  3. BO, leaving a long tail.
  4. Curve into a handle and sew both ends to the basket sides.

  • Use red yarn to embroider vertical lines every 4 stitches.
  • Use red yarn to embroider horizontal lines every 4 ridges.
  • Tuck the cloth under the lid and sew lightly in place.

Picnic Blanket

The blanket is a small checked mat placed under the basket. It uses white as the base with blue, pink, yellow, and green stitched stripes, matching the colorful picnic blanket in the image.

  1. With white yarn, CO 34 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: K all sts.
  3. Rows 5 to 44: Work in garter stitch, knitting every row.
  4. Rows 45 to 48: K all sts.
  5. BO all sts.
  • With blue yarn, embroider vertical lines every 6 stitches.
  • With pink yarn, embroider vertical lines between selected blue lines.
  • With yellow yarn, embroider horizontal lines every 6 garter ridges.
  • With green yarn, add a few lighter horizontal lines to complete the picnic check pattern.
  • Block the blanket lightly so it lies flat beside the puppy.

Body Assembly

Before sewing everything permanently, place the body, legs, arms, head, and clothing together on a flat surface. The puppy should sit with both legs forward, feet turned slightly outward, and arms resting near the front bib.

  1. Sew the legs to the lower front of the body, spacing them about 4 stitches apart at the top.
  2. Pull the green overall pants over the seated lower body and secure the waist with hidden stitches.
  3. Sew the bib to the front center of the pants.
  4. Attach the straps over the shoulders and sew the buttons to the front.
  5. Place the sweater yoke around the upper body and sew it neatly below the neck.
  6. Sew the arms to the sides of the body, slightly forward, so the paws frame the bib.
  7. Sew the head to the top of the body with firm stitches, checking that the face points forward.
  8. Attach the ears after the head is secured so you can balance the expression.

Facial Expression and Eye Shaping

To create the soft puppy look shown in the image, add gentle eye shaping after the head is stuffed and closed. Use golden yellow yarn and a long needle.

  1. Insert the needle at the back lower head and come out beside the left eye.
  2. Take a tiny stitch beside the eye and return to the back lower head.
  3. Pull gently until the eye sinks slightly into the face.
  4. Repeat for the right eye, matching the tension.
  5. Knot securely and hide the yarn tail inside the head.

This step gives the puppy a friendly, rounded expression. Do not pull too tightly, or the face may become pinched.

Flower and Clothing Placement Guide

  • Flowerpot: sew to the top left of the head, slightly tilted outward.
  • Watering can: sew to the top right of the head, leaning gently to the side.
  • Daisies on yoke: place across the navy chest area, with one central flower and smaller flowers around it.
  • Strawberry: sew to the lower left front of the green bib.
  • Carrot: sew diagonally beside the strawberry.
  • Sandals: position the tan soles under the golden feet and brown straps over the toe area.
  • Ladybugs: add one small red ladybug on each sandal strap.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check every seam and tighten any loose ends before trimming yarn tails. Brush the surface gently with your fingers to smooth the stitches. Add the final black mouth curve, pink tongue, toe lines, button placement, and tiny daisy centers only after the main pieces are securely attached.

  • Make sure the head sits straight above the body.
  • Keep the ears symmetrical but naturally relaxed.
  • Angle the flowerpot and watering can so they look balanced, not heavy.
  • Place the picnic hat, blanket, and basket beside the puppy for display.

Care Notes

This knitted puppy is best used as a decorative soft toy. Because it includes buttons, safety eyes, and small sewn accessories, it is not recommended for children under 3 years old.

  • Spot clean with a damp cloth.
  • Do not machine wash if accessories are attached.
  • Let the toy air dry fully before storage.
  • Avoid heavy handling of the head-top flowerpot and watering can.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Head is round, firm, and larger than the body.
  • Eyes are evenly spaced and slightly sunken.
  • Muzzle is centered and softly stuffed.
  • Nose, mouth, and tongue are secure.
  • Ears hang down at both sides of the face.
  • Blue-and-white sleeves are even in stripe width.
  • Green overalls sit smoothly over the seated body.
  • Strawberry, carrot, buttons, daisies, and ladybugs are attached.
  • Flowerpot, flowers, and watering can are stable on the head.
  • Hat, basket, and blanket are complete for the full garden picnic scene.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, store the puppy upright in a dry place away from direct sunlight. If dust gathers on the stitches, use a soft brush or clean cloth to lift it gently.

  • For small stains, dab with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not soak the head because the accessories may shift.
  • Reshape the ears, feet, and overalls while damp if needed.
  • Keep the toy away from pets that may pull on flowers, buttons, or straps.
  • Store the picnic accessories in a small breathable bag when not displayed.

Your golden garden puppy is now ready to sit proudly with its green overalls, daisy sweater, tiny gardening treasures, straw hat, picnic basket, and colorful blanket. The finished piece makes a bright handmade display for spring decor, garden-themed shelves, nursery styling, or a cheerful knitting gift.
