This cozy mallard duck knitting project creates a seated duck doll with a green head, yellow bill, tiny black eyes, round glasses, a ribbed rust beanie with pom-pom, cream shirt, navy button cardigan, brown cuffed pants, yellow legs, red-and-white striped sandals, a mustard shoulder bag with a blue flower, plus a small knitted coffee cup, saucer, and stacked books.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern is written for knitters who are comfortable with small pieces, increases, decreases, seaming, and shaping. The doll is worked mostly flat and seamed, with some small pieces worked in the round on double-pointed needles if preferred.
The finished duck is designed to sit naturally on a table edge. The legs hang forward, the cardigan opens at the front, the bag rests beside one hand, and the small coffee props complete the relaxed coffee-break scene.
- Finished size: about 11 inches tall when seated, not including the hat pom-pom.
- Skill level: confident beginner to intermediate.
- Construction: separate knitted body parts, lightly stuffed, seamed, then dressed with removable-style clothing pieces sewn in place.
- Main texture: visible stockinette stitch with ribbed cuffs, hat brim, shirt hem, pants cuffs, and cardigan edges.
Materials
- DK weight yarn in mallard green, golden yellow, cream, navy blue, brown, rust orange, mustard yellow, red, white, light blue, dark blue, pale gray, and a small amount of black.
- US size 3 knitting needles, or size needed to create firm fabric.
- US size 2 needles for ribbed clothing edges if you want tighter cuffs.
- Small double-pointed needles for legs, cup, pom-pom, and narrow tubes, optional.
- Fiberfill stuffing.
- Two 6 mm black safety eyes or black beads.
- Five tiny tan buttons for the cardigan.
- One tiny button for the bag flap.
- Thin craft wire for glasses, about 12 inches.
- Yarn needle, stitch markers, sewing pins, and scissors.
Gauge and Firmness
Gauge is important because the duck needs a firm, sculpted shape. In stockinette stitch, aim for about 6 stitches and 8 rows per inch. If your fabric looks loose, go down one needle size so stuffing will not show through.
The knitted fabric in the image is firm but not stiff. The stitches are clear and slightly textured, especially on the head, pants, cardigan sleeves, and sandals. Stuff gradually, shaping each piece as you work.

Use black yarn to make two tiny nostril stitches on the top of the bill, about 3 stitches apart. Keep the embroidery small and simple, matching the quiet expression in the image.
Facial Details and Glasses
- Place the eyes on the green head, one on each side of the bill base, about 2 rows above the top edge of the bill.
- The eyes should sit slightly high and close to the glasses frame, giving a calm, thoughtful look.
- Secure safety eyes before fully closing the head if using safety backs.
- For sewn eyes, make three small horizontal stitches with black yarn for each eye.
- Shape two round glasses from thin craft wire, each circle about 3/4 inch wide.
- Join the circles with a small bridge over the bill.
- Bend two short side arms and tuck them gently into the side of the head.
- Stitch the glasses in place with pale gray thread at each side so they do not slide.

- Sew the feet forward and attach the striped sandals over the feet.
- Attach the shirt flat to the front body, then layer the cardigan over it.
- Sew arms at the shoulder under the cardigan sleeves, angled gently downward.
- Attach the neck and head firmly so the duck holds an upright seated posture.
- Sew the bill centered on the face, then add nostrils, eyes, glasses, and hat.
- Place the bag beside one hand and tack it lightly to the hand or table display position.
- Place the cup, saucer, and books as separate props or tack them to a display base.
Care Notes
Spot clean the doll with a slightly damp cloth. Do not soak the glasses, buttons, or embroidered bag area. Let the doll air dry flat, away from direct heat, so the stuffed pieces keep their shape.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- Head: tall green shape, centered bill, small black eyes, and wire glasses.
- Outfit: rust beanie, cream shirt, navy cardigan, brown cuffed pants, and striped sandals.
- Accessories: mustard bag with blue flower, coffee cup, saucer, and stacked books.
- Pose: seated body with legs hanging forward and arms relaxed at the sides.
- Details: visible buttons, folded cuffs, ribbed hat brim, neck bands, and tiny nostrils.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Keep the doll away from strong sunlight to protect the deep green, navy, rust, and mustard colors. Store it upright or lying flat in a breathable cotton bag. Avoid plastic storage for long periods because trapped moisture may affect the yarn and stuffing.
If the glasses bend, reshape them slowly with your fingers and secure the side stitches again. If the sandals flatten, gently pinch the upper bands back into shape. For display, place the duck on a stable shelf or table edge where the legs can hang naturally.
