Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

The finished bunny measures about 13 in / 33 cm from the soles to the tips of the ears when made with DK yarn and 2.75 mm needles. The doll has a large cartoon-style head, tall upright ears, a small rounded body, short arms, garden overalls, and separate mini gardening accessories.

  • Head width: about 4.75 in / 12 cm across the cheeks.
  • Body height: about 4.5 in / 11.5 cm from neck to crotch.
  • Ear height: about 4.75 in / 12 cm each.
  • Foot length: about 2 in / 5 cm each.
  • Accessories: trowel, seed pot with sprout, and watering can are small display pieces.

Skill Level

This pattern is best for confident beginners to intermediate knitters. Most pieces are knitted in the round using simple increases and decreases. The overalls use easy colorwork, and the owl patch is worked as a tiny duplicate-stitch embroidery panel.

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in soft gray for head, ears, legs, and watering can.
  • DK weight yarn in white for cheeks, muzzle, hands, and front toes.
  • DK weight yarn in cream for inner ears and overall pattern color.
  • DK weight yarn in forest green for sweater and owl patch background.
  • DK weight yarn in warm orange for overalls.
  • DK weight yarn in tan brown for cap, trowel handle, pot, and shoe soles.
  • Small amounts of dark brown, yellow, black, pink, and light beige yarn for details.
  • 2.75 mm double-pointed needles or circular needles for magic loop.
  • 2.5 mm needles for firmer small accessories.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Two 6 mm black safety eyes, or black yarn if making for a young child.
  • Two 6 mm wooden-style buttons for overall straps.
  • Four small buttons are optional for decorative shoe details.
  • Stitch markers, removable markers, and pins.

Gauge

Gauge is important for a firm toy fabric. Knit a small swatch in stockinette stitch using 2.75 mm needles. Aim for 28 stitches and 36 rounds over 4 in / 10 cm. If the fabric looks loose and stuffing shows through, use smaller needles.

  • Toy fabric rule: tighter is better than looser.
  • Small pieces: use the same gauge or slightly tighter gauge.
  • Colorwork areas: keep floats relaxed, but not loose enough to snag.

Construction Notes

The bunny is knitted as separate pieces, stuffed firmly, then sewn together. This gives the large head, rounded cheeks, upright ears, and small dressed body the same charming proportion as the photographed toy. Use mattress stitch for seams and a tapestry needle for shaping.

  • The head is gray with a white muzzle and two large white cheeks sewn on top.
  • The ears are long, narrow, pointed, and slightly curved, with cream inner panels.
  • The sweater is green and visible on the torso and sleeves.
  • The overalls are warm orange with cream V-shaped garden texture, two straps, and button details.
  • The shoes are brown around the sides with large white front toes and yellow flower accents.

Center Face Stripe

The photographed bunny has a darker gray center line running down the front of the face between the eyes and toward the nose. This detail gives the face definition and should be added before the muzzle is sewn on.

  1. Thread a tapestry needle with darker gray yarn.
  2. Starting between the ears at the top center of the forehead, duplicate stitch a vertical stripe 5 sts wide and 15 rows long.
  3. Narrow the stripe to 3 sts wide for the lower 5 rows.
  4. End the stripe just above the nose placement.
  5. Secure yarn inside the head and trim.

White Cheeks

The cheeks are two large round white puffs sewn to the lower front of the face. They should touch at the center, sit below the eyes, and cover the lower gray head so the face looks full and soft.

  1. Make 2. With white yarn, CO 8 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts. 8 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb around. 16 sts.

  13. Rnd 15: K2tog around. 8 sts.
  14. Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull closed, and leave a long tail for sewing.

Muzzle Bridge

The small white muzzle bridge sits between the two cheeks and directly under the pink nose. It helps form the bunny’s classic rounded mouth area.

  1. With white yarn, CO 10 sts.
  2. Rows 1-2: K all sts.
  3. Row 3: Kfb, K8, Kfb. 12 sts.

Pink Nose

The nose is small, oval, and soft pink. It sits at the top center of the cheeks, slightly overlapping the white muzzle bridge.

  1. With pink yarn and 2.5 mm needles, CO 6 sts.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: P all sts.
  4. Row 3: Kfb, K4, Kfb. 8 sts.

  9. Row 8: P all sts.
  10. BO all sts, leaving a tail.
  11. Gather the edge slightly with the tail to make a plump oval before sewing.

Eyes

The eyes are tall black ovals positioned high above the cheeks. In the image, the eyes are close together and sit on either side of the center gray stripe.

  • Place the first eye 1 st to the left of the center stripe and about 3 rows above the top of the cheek.
  • Place the second eye 1 st to the right of the stripe at the same height.
  • For embroidered eyes, satin stitch each oval over 3 sts wide and 7 rows high using black yarn.
  • Add one tiny white stitch near the upper edge of each eye for a highlight if desired.

Teeth and Mouth

The bunny has two small white front teeth under the nose with a fine vertical line between them. Keep this detail neat and small so the cheeks remain the main facial feature.

  1. Using white yarn, embroider a small rectangle 4 sts wide and 5 rows tall under the nose.
  2. Use black or dark gray yarn to stitch one vertical line down the center of the rectangle.
  3. Add a short black line from the bottom of the nose to the top of the teeth.
  4. Do not over-tighten the embroidery, or the muzzle will pucker.

Outer Ears

The ears are tall, narrow, and pointed. They stand upright behind the cap. Work two gray outer ears and two cream inner panels, then sew the cream panels onto the gray pieces before attaching.

  1. Make 2 gray outer ears. With gray yarn, CO 12 sts.
  2. Rows 1-4: Work in stockinette, beginning with K on RS.
  3. Row 5: Kfb, K10, Kfb. 14 sts.

  6. Row 30: P all sts.
  7. Row 31: SSK, K4, K2tog. 6 sts.
  8. Row 32: P all sts.
  9. Row 33: SSK, K2, K2tog. 4 sts.
  10. Row 34: P all sts.
  11. Row 35: SSK, K2tog. 2 sts.
  12. Row 36: P2tog. 1 st.
  13. Cut yarn and pull through final st.
  14. Sew one cream panel onto each gray ear, leaving a gray border of about 2 sts around all sides.

Ear Shaping and Attachment

The ears should lean slightly outward, not straight forward. This creates the tall garden-bunny silhouette seen in the image.

  • Fold the base of each ear slightly inward to make a shallow channel.
  • Sew the lower 0.75 in / 2 cm of each ear base closed.
  • Pin ears to the top back of the head, about 1 in / 2.5 cm apart.
  • Angle the left ear slightly left and the right ear slightly right.
  • Sew firmly around the base twice so the ears stand upright.

  6. BO loosely.
  7. Sew the upper sleeve edge into the sweater armhole after the arms are attached.

Owl Patch on Sweater

The owl patch is centered on the green sweater front. It is small but important because it matches the garden theme in the image. Work the patch by duplicate stitch or embroidery after the sweater is sewn onto the body.

  • Mark a rectangle 10 sts wide and 9 rows high at the center front of the sweater.
  • Use dark brown yarn to duplicate stitch an owl body 6 sts wide and 7 rows high.
  • Use beige yarn for two small wing stitches on each side.
  • Use white yarn to make two round eyes, each 2 sts wide.
  • Use black yarn for one tiny pupil in each eye.
  • Use yellow yarn for a small beak shaped like a V.

  3. Curve the handle into a C shape.

Assembly Order

Assemble slowly and pin everything before sewing. The exact placement matters because the bunny’s charm comes from the oversized head, long ears, rounded cheeks, and tiny garden accessories.

  1. Sew the green sweater around the body, matching the center front to the body front.
  2. Sew the body to the underside of the head, keeping the head centered and slightly forward-facing.
  3. Sew the arms to the upper sides of the body, with white hands pointing down.
  4. Fit the overalls over the body and legs, then tack the waist to the sweater in a few hidden places.
  5. Sew the overall straps over the shoulders and attach buttons at the bib corners.
  6. Sew the legs into the lower body openings so the gray lower legs show below the shorts.
  7. Sew the shoes to the legs, placing the white toes forward and the flower decorations on the outer sides.
  8. Sew the cheeks to the lower face, making sure they touch at the center.
  9. Sew the muzzle bridge between the cheeks and place the pink nose on top.
  10. Attach the ears to the top back of the head and sew securely.
  11. Place the cap between the ears and stitch it to the head along the lower rim.
  12. Embroider eye highlights, tooth line, toe lines, and sleeve details last.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Use pins to check the expression before sewing the facial details permanently. The eyes should be tall, close together, and slightly above the cheeks. The pink nose should sit at the center where the cheeks meet. The mouth and teeth should be tiny, neat, and vertical.

  • Shape the cheeks by pulling a few hidden stitches from cheek to cheek through the head.
  • Add the vertical center face stripe before sewing the nose and muzzle in place.
  • Keep the ears upright by stitching firmly around each base twice.
  • Steam lightly only if needed, and never press the stuffed face flat.

Care Notes

Because this bunny has buttons, small flowers, and accessories, it is best used as a decorative handmade toy. For a child-safe version, embroider all details instead of using buttons or safety eyes.

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if the doll includes buttons or firm shaping.
  • Let the bunny air dry flat on a towel.
  • Reshape ears, cheeks, cap, and accessories while damp.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The ears are tall, gray outside, cream inside, and angled slightly outward.
  • The tan cap sits low between the ears with a rolled front brim.
  • The cheeks are large, white, round, and touching at the center.
  • The nose is small, pink, and centered above the teeth.
  • The sweater is forest green with a tiny owl patch on the chest.
  • The overalls are orange with cream V-style colorwork and two buttoned straps.
  • The shoes are brown with white rounded toes and yellow side flowers.
  • The trowel, seed pot with sprout, and watering can are finished as separate display pieces.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the knitted bunny away from direct sunlight to protect the green sweater, orange overalls, and pink nose from fading. Keep the accessories in a small cloth bag when not displayed so the trowel, pot, and watering can do not get lost.

  • Dust gently with a soft brush.
  • Refresh the shape by lightly steaming from a distance, without pressing.
  • Avoid soaking the doll because the stuffing may shift.
  • Check sewn-on buttons and flowers occasionally and reinforce them if they loosen.
  • For long-term display, keep the bunny upright with support behind the body, not by pulling on the ears.
