Knitting Tutorial: Raccoon Girl in Forest Green Cable Dress and Mushroom Beret – Free Knitting Pattern

This woodland raccoon girl is dressed in a forest green cable dress, a cream embroidered cardigan, brown button shoes, and a rust mushroom beret with soft white spots. She also carries an acorn crossbody bag and sits beside tiny garden accessories, including a knitted watering can and a small basket filled with colorful vegetables.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US English knitting terms and is designed for a small soft art doll with a finished height of about 11 inches when made with sport weight yarn and 2.75 mm needles. The raccoon has a rounded head, tapered muzzle, dark mask markings, gray striped fur, slim arms, sturdy legs, and removable-style clothing sewn in place for display.

The outfit is built to match the image closely: a deep forest green dress with a center cable panel, a cream cardigan with simple embroidered leaves and acorns, a rust mushroom beret with a pale ribbed underside, a knitted acorn purse, and brown Mary Jane shoes with tiny buttons.

Finished Size

  • Doll height: About 11 inches from shoe sole to top of head, not including beret height.
  • Head width: About 3.5 inches after stuffing.
  • Dress length: About 4 inches from neckline to hem.
  • Cardigan length: About 3.25 inches from shoulder to lower edge.
  • Beret width: About 3.75 inches across after blocking lightly.
  • Acorn bag: About 2 inches tall.

Skill Level

This is an intermediate knitting pattern, but a confident beginner can follow it slowly. The doll uses simple shaping, small pieces, mattress stitch, duplicate stitch, embroidery, and a basic 6-stitch cable. Work carefully, count often, and stuff gradually so the raccoon keeps the soft rounded shape shown in the photo.

Materials

  • Yarn weight: Sport weight or fine DK yarn.
  • Main fur gray: 35 g medium heather gray.
  • Dark mask and paws: 15 g charcoal black or very dark gray.
  • White face fur: 12 g warm white or natural cream.
  • Dress: 28 g forest green.
  • Cardigan: 25 g warm cream.
  • Beret top: 12 g rusty mushroom brown.
  • Beret underside: 6 g light beige.
  • Shoes and acorn cap: 15 g chestnut brown.
  • Acorn bag body: 8 g tan.
  • Vegetables: Small scraps of orange, green, white, pink, red, and purple.
  • Needles: US 2 or 2.75 mm double-pointed needles.
  • Optional needles: US 1 or 2.25 mm for tighter shoes and accessories.
  • Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch markers, cable needle, fiberfill, black embroidery thread, white embroidery thread, sewing pins.
  • Buttons: Five 6 mm wooden buttons for cardigan and two 5 mm buttons for shoes.
  • Eyes: Two 7 mm black safety eyes or embroidered eyes.
  • Optional: Blush powder or soft brown pencil for gentle shading.

Gauge

  • Doll gauge: 7 stitches and 10 rounds equal 1 inch in stockinette stitch on 2.75 mm needles.
  • Clothing gauge: 7.5 stitches and 10 rows equal 1 inch in stockinette stitch.
  • Accessory gauge: Work tightly enough that stuffing does not show through.

Gauge is important for a neat doll shape. If your fabric looks loose, use a smaller needle. If the pieces are stiff and difficult to shape, use a larger needle. The knitted fabric should feel firm but still soft enough to shape around the stuffing.

Construction Notes

The head and body are knitted separately in the round, then sewn together with the head slightly tilted forward. The arms and legs are slim cylinders with color changes for paws and stockings. The clothing pieces are knitted flat and seamed onto the body for a polished display-doll finish.

The raccoon’s face depends on clear color placement. The dark mask sits around both eyes, the white muzzle is oval and raised, and the gray forehead has a narrow white blaze. Do not rush the face. Pin every piece before sewing so the expression stays sweet and centered.

Raccoon Body

Body Base

Use forest green for the lower dress-covered body if you want the dress permanently integrated. Use gray for a fully separate body. For the image-style finish, work the body in gray and sew the dress over it.

  1. With gray yarn, CO 12 sts and divide evenly over 3 dpns. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: Knit all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in every st around. 24 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: Knit all sts.
  5. Rnd 4: Repeat k1, kfb around. 36 sts.
  6. Rnd 5: Knit all sts.
  7. Rnd 6: Repeat k2, kfb around. 48 sts.
  8. Rnds 7-18: Knit all sts for the rounded lower torso.
  9. Rnd 19: Repeat k6, k2tog around. 42 sts.
  10. Rnds 20-25: Knit all sts.
  11. Rnd 26: Repeat k5, k2tog around. 36 sts.

  14. Rnds 34-36: Knit all sts.
  15. Rnd 37: Repeat k3, k2tog around. 24 sts.
  16. Rnd 38: Knit all sts.
  17. BO loosely, leaving a long tail for sewing the head.

Stuff the body firmly at the lower half and slightly softer near the neck. The base should stand rounded under the dress, with a gentle taper at the shoulders. Do not overstuff the neck edge because it must sit neatly under the raccoon head.

Raccoon Head

  20. Rnd 31: Repeat k2, k2tog around. 24 sts.
  21. Pause to add eyes and facial patches before closing fully.

Dark Eye Mask Patches

Make two black patches. Each patch is shaped like a soft teardrop that slopes inward toward the white muzzle. They should sit from the upper cheek to the side of the forehead, surrounding the eyes like the raccoon mask shown in the image.

  1. With black yarn, CO 5 sts.
  2. Row 1: Purl.
  3. Row 2: Kfb, k3, kfb. 7 sts.
  4. Row 3: Purl.
  5. Row 4: Kfb, k5, kfb. 9 sts.
  6. Rows 5-8: Work stockinette stitch, beginning with a purl row.
  7. Row 9: P2tog, p5, p2tog. 7 sts.
  8. Row 10: Ssk, k3, k2tog. 5 sts.
  9. Row 11: P2tog, p1, p2tog. 3 sts.
  10. Row 12: Sl1, k2tog, pass slipped st over. 1 st.
  11. Cut yarn and pull through last st.

Make a second patch the same way. For a mirrored face, rotate the second patch before sewing rather than changing the knitting. Pin both patches so they angle down toward the muzzle and leave a slim gray line along the top center of the forehead.

White Forehead Blaze

  1. With white yarn, CO 3 sts.
  2. Row 1: Purl.
  3. Row 2: Kfb, k1, kfb. 5 sts.
  4. Rows 3-8: Work stockinette stitch.
  5. Row 9: P2tog, p1, p2tog. 3 sts.
  6. Row 10: Sl1, k2tog, pass slipped st over. 1 st.
  7. Fasten off.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Sew the white blaze vertically between the black patches. The bottom point should meet the upper muzzle, and the top should reach toward the beret line. Keep the shape narrow, because the image shows a delicate white stripe rather than a wide forehead panel.

White Muzzle

  1. With white yarn, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: Purl.
  3. Row 2: Kfb, k6, kfb. 10 sts.
  4. Row 3: Purl.
  5. Row 4: Kfb, k8, kfb. 12 sts.
  6. Rows 5-8: Work stockinette stitch.
  7. Row 9: P2tog, p8, p2tog. 10 sts.
  8. Row 10: Ssk, k6, k2tog. 8 sts.
  9. Row 11: Purl.
  10. BO all sts, leaving a long tail.

Lightly stuff the muzzle while sewing it to the lower center of the head. The muzzle should be oval, raised, and soft. Place it below the eyes, with the upper edge touching the bottom of the black mask patches.

Eyes, Nose, and Smile

  • Place the eyes between head rounds 17 and 18, about 8 stitches apart.
  • Each eye should sit inside a black mask patch, slightly above the top edge of the muzzle.
  • Embroider a small satin-stitch nose with black thread at the top center of the muzzle.
  • Work one short vertical stitch below the nose, then two tiny curved stitches for a gentle smile.
  • Add one white highlight stitch near the upper outside edge of each eye if using embroidered eyes.

Finish Head

  1. After the face placement is secure, return to the head stitches.
  2. Rnd 32: Repeat k1, k2tog around. 16 sts.
  3. Stuff the head firmly, shaping round cheeks with your fingers.
  4. Rnd 33: K2tog around. 8 sts.
  5. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull tight, and secure.

Ears

The ears are rounded triangles with dark inner centers and gray outer edges. In the image, one ear peeks clearly from beneath the beret, while the other is partly hidden. Make both ears, then sew one slightly lower if the beret will cover it.

Outer Ear, Make 2

  1. With gray yarn, CO 10 sts.
  2. Row 1: Purl.
  3. Rows 2-4: Work stockinette stitch.
  4. Row 5: P2tog, p6, p2tog. 8 sts.
  5. Row 6: Knit.
  6. Row 7: P2tog, p4, p2tog. 6 sts.
  7. Row 8: Knit.
  8. Row 9: P2tog, p2, p2tog. 4 sts.
  9. Row 10: K2tog twice. 2 sts.
  10. Row 11: P2tog. 1 st.
  11. Fasten off.

Inner Ear, Make 2

  1. With black yarn, CO 6 sts.
  2. Row 1: Purl.
  3. Rows 2-3: Work stockinette stitch.
  4. Row 4: Ssk, k2, k2tog. 4 sts.
  5. Row 5: Purl.
  6. Row 6: K2tog twice. 2 sts.
  7. Row 7: P2tog. 1 st.
  8. Fasten off.

Sew each black inner ear onto one gray outer ear. Fold the lower edge slightly inward and stitch it in place to cup the ear. Sew ears to the head around rounds 10-16, about 20 stitches apart, angled outward.

Arms

The arms are slim, gray at the shoulder and black at the hands. They hang down beside the cardigan, with only the dark paw tips visible beneath the cream sleeves.

  1. With black yarn, CO 10 sts and divide over dpns.
  2. Rnds 1-5: Knit all sts.
  3. Change to gray yarn.
  4. Rnds 6-22: Knit all sts.
  5. Rnd 23: Repeat k3, k2tog twice. 8 sts.
  6. Rnds 24-25: Knit all sts.
  7. Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull closed.

Stuff the hands lightly and the upper arms very softly. Flatten the top edge before sewing. Attach arms to the upper sides of the body around the shoulder line, then let the cardigan sleeves cover the upper seams.

Legs

The legs show gray ribbed stockings and dark raccoon feet inside brown shoes. They should be sturdy enough to hang neatly from the dress hem without twisting.

  1. With black yarn, CO 12 sts and divide over dpns.
  2. Rnds 1-6: Knit all sts for the dark foot base.
  3. Change to gray yarn.
  4. Rnds 7-9: Repeat k2, p2 around for ribbed stocking texture.
  5. Rnds 10-26: Continue k2, p2 rib.
  6. Rnd 27: Repeat k2, k2tog around. 9 sts.
  7. Rnd 28: Knit all sts.
  8. Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull closed.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Stuff each leg lightly but firmly enough to hold shape. Sew legs to the underside of the body, about 8 stitches apart. Position them so the feet point forward and the stockings show between the dress hem and the shoes.

Tail

The tail is mostly hidden behind the dress in the image, but a raccoon doll needs a soft striped tail for balance and character. Keep it modest so it does not distract from the green dress.

  1. With gray yarn, CO 14 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-5: Knit in gray.
  3. Change to black yarn.
  4. Rnds 6-8: Knit in black.
  5. Change to gray yarn.
  6. Rnds 9-13: Knit in gray.
  7. Change to black yarn.
  8. Rnds 14-16: Knit in black.
  9. Change to gray yarn.
  10. Rnds 17-22: Knit in gray.
  11. Rnd 23: Repeat k5, k2tog twice. 12 sts.
  12. Rnd 24: Knit all sts.
  13. Rnd 25: K2tog around. 6 sts.
  14. Cut yarn, thread through sts, and close.

Stuff the tail softly. Sew it to the back lower body before adding the dress, curving it slightly to one side. It may remain partly hidden, just as a natural tail would tuck behind the skirt.

Forest Green Cable Dress

The dress is the main clothing feature. It has a fitted bodice, a flared skirt, a garter hem, and a strong center cable panel. The front cable should run straight down the middle, with smooth stockinette panels on each side.

Dress Skirt

  1. With forest green yarn, CO 72 sts. Work flat.
  2. Rows 1-4: Knit all sts for a garter stitch hem.
  3. Row 5, RS: K18, p2, k6, p2, k44.
  4. Row 6, WS: P44, k2, p6, k2, p18.
  5. Row 7: K18, p2, C6F, p2, k44.
  6. Row 8: Repeat Row 6.
  7. Rows 9-14: Repeat Rows 5-6 three times.
  8. Row 15: K18, p2, C6B, p2, k44.
  9. Row 16: Repeat Row 6.
  10. Rows 17-22: Repeat Rows 5-6 three times.
  11. Repeat Rows 7-22 once more for a tall center cable panel.
  12. Next RS decrease row: K6, k2tog across as evenly as possible while keeping cable panel correct. End with 54 sts.
  13. Work 5 rows in established pattern, continuing the cable if needed.
  14. Next RS decrease row: K4, k2tog across as evenly as possible. End with 44 sts.

Dress Bodice

  1. WS row: Purl all knit areas and keep cable border sts as established.
  2. Next RS row: K11, BO 4 sts, k14, BO 4 sts, k11. These are armholes.
  3. Next WS row: P11, CO 4 sts over gap, p14, CO 4 sts over gap, p11. 44 sts.
  4. Work 4 rows stockinette, keeping center cable if it still continues naturally.
  5. Next row: K2, repeat k2tog, k3 across to reduce neckline to about 36 sts.
  6. Rows 1-3 neckline: Knit all sts for garter edging.
  7. BO loosely.

Wrap the dress around the body with the cable centered at the front. Sew the back seam from hem to neckline. Keep the skirt slightly flared. Sew the neckline to the upper body with tiny hidden stitches so it does not twist under the cardigan.

Cream Cardigan

The cardigan is warm cream with a soft open front, short rounded sleeves, five small buttons, and embroidered woodland sprigs. It should sit over the dress without hiding the center cable completely.

Cardigan Body

  1. With cream yarn, CO 54 sts. Work flat.
  2. Rows 1-4: Knit all sts for garter lower edging.
  3. Row 5 RS: K4, p1, k44, p1, k4. The first and last 5 sts form front bands.
  4. Row 6 WS: K5, p44, k5.
  5. Repeat Rows 5-6 until cardigan measures 2 inches from cast-on edge.
  6. Next RS row: K13, BO 4 sts, k20, BO 4 sts, k13.
  7. Next WS row: Work each section separately as left front, back, and right front.

Left Front

  1. Work 13 sts in pattern for 8 rows.
  2. Neck shaping row: BO 3 sts at neck edge, work to end. 10 sts.
  3. Next neck shaping row: BO 2 sts at neck edge. 8 sts.
  4. Work 2 rows even.
  5. Place shoulder sts on holder.

  6. Next RS row: Ssk, knit to last 2 sts, k2tog. 18 sts.
  7. Next WS row: Purl.
  8. Repeat last 2 rows twice more. 14 sts.
  9. BO all sts.

Sew each sleeve seam, then sew sleeves into the armholes. Slide the cardigan onto the doll and tack the shoulders, sleeve cuffs, and lower edge in place. The front should remain slightly open to reveal the green dress beneath.

Button Band and Buttons

  • Sew five small wooden buttons down the doll’s right cardigan front.
  • Place the top button just below the neckline.
  • Place the lowest button slightly above the cardigan hem.
  • Use brown sewing thread or matching yarn for a rustic woodland look.
  • The opposite band may be left without buttonholes because this is a display doll.

Embroidered Leaves and Acorns

Use small straight stitches to decorate both cardigan fronts. Keep embroidery light and vertical. Each side has a brown stem, green leaves, and small rust or brown acorns, matching the cozy woodland details visible in the image.

  1. With brown embroidery thread, stitch one branching stem on each front panel, starting about 5 rows above the hem.
  2. With olive green, add 5 to 7 lazy-daisy style leaves along each stem.
  3. With rust yarn, stitch two small oval acorn bodies near each lower branch.
  4. With dark brown yarn, add tiny caps above the acorns using 2 horizontal stitches.
  5. With golden brown yarn, add 2 small leaf accents near the upper branch.

  4. Sew the tail to the back before the dress is fully secured.
  5. Place the dress with the cable panel centered on the front.
  6. Add the cardigan over the dress, then sew only where needed to keep it smooth.

  8. Position the acorn bag strap across the chest from shoulder to opposite hip.
  9. Arrange the basket and watering can beside the doll for the full garden scene.

For whiskers, use three short strands of white embroidery thread on each side of the muzzle. Stitch through the muzzle, knot discreetly, and trim evenly. Keep the whiskers soft and fine so they do not overpower the eyes and tiny smile.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only with a cool damp cloth.
  • Do not machine wash, especially if safety eyes, buttons, or embroidery are attached.
  • Let the doll air dry flat after cleaning.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight to protect the cream cardigan and green dress color.
  • This design is best used as a decorative handmade item, not a toy for very young children.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The green cable dress is centered and flares gently at the hem.
  • The cream cardigan sits open enough to show the front cable.
  • The mushroom beret has a pale ribbed brim and white spots.
  • The raccoon mask is even, with eyes placed inside the dark patches.
  • The muzzle is softly stuffed and sewn in the lower center of the face.
  • The acorn bag hangs diagonally across the body.
  • The brown shoes have straps and tiny buttons.
  • The basket includes carrots, radishes, and pale round vegetables.
  • The watering can has a spout and two handles.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the doll’s shape, support the head, dress, and bag while handling it. If dust collects, use a clean soft brush and work gently in the direction of the knitted stitches. Avoid pulling the embroidered leaves, buttons, mushroom spots, or whiskers.

For long-term display, store the raccoon girl in a dry place with tissue paper lightly supporting the beret and skirt. Keep accessories together in a small breathable bag when not displayed. This helps the tiny vegetables, basket, watering can, and acorn purse stay clean and easy to find.
