This cheerful knitted Shaggy Schnauzer Dog is dressed just like the garden doll in the photo, with a black-and-white shaggy face, pointed black ears, a bright red bow, red-and-white striped shirt sleeves, blue overalls, red strap shoes, and a tiny mushroom crossbody bag. The set also includes a yellow sunhat with a blue tie, a gray watering can, a knitted trowel, and a garden fork for a complete miniature gardening display.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Finished Size
The finished Schnauzer measures about 13 inches tall from shoe sole to ear tip when worked with DK yarn and firm stuffing. The body is rounded, the legs are short and straight, the arms are smooth cream tubes, and the head is slightly oversized to match the cute handmade doll proportions in the image.
- Dog height: about 13 inches tall.
- Head width: about 4.75 inches after stuffing.
- Body width: about 3.75 inches across the overalls.
- Leg length: about 3.25 inches including shoes.
- Arm length: about 3.75 inches.
- Hat diameter: about 4.75 inches.
- Watering can: about 2.75 inches wide including spout and handle.
Skill Level
This pattern is best for confident beginners or intermediate knitters. Most parts are knitted in the round using stockinette stitch, with simple increases, decreases, color changes, small seams, and embroidered finishing. The shaggy Schnauzer beard is made with short looped yarn strands, so no advanced fur technique is needed.

- Buttons: two tiny tan buttons for overall straps and two tiny cream buttons for shoe sides.
- Other tools: yarn needle, stitch markers, scissors, pins, row counter, and removable stitch markers.
Gauge
Gauge is important because the doll needs firm fabric that holds stuffing without gaps. Work a small swatch in stockinette stitch using DK yarn and US 3 needles. Aim for 6 stitches and 8 rounds per inch after light blocking. If your fabric looks loose, go down one needle size.
- Main gauge: 24 stitches and 32 rounds = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.
- Accessory gauge: 26 stitches and 34 rows = 4 inches on smaller needles.
- Stuffing rule: stuff firmly but do not stretch the stitches open.

Pattern Notes
The dog is made from separate knitted pieces, then stuffed and sewn together. The legs are attached beneath the blue overall body. The cream arms are added at shoulder height, under the striped sleeves. The head is shaped in black and cream, then covered with separate shaggy muzzle strands.
For the photo-like look, keep the overalls slightly loose around the belly and place the front bib high on the chest. The red-and-white striped sleeves should be visible on both shoulders. The bow sits between the ears, slightly toward the dog’s right side.
- Work tightly: firm knitting gives the toy a clean rounded shape.
- Use pins before sewing: check symmetry from the front, side, and top.
- Face first, then fur: attach eyes and nose before adding beard strands.
- Keep accessories light: the hat, watering can, and tools are display pieces and do not need heavy stuffing.

Long Shaggy Schnauzer Beard and Muzzle
The shaggy white muzzle is the most important detail. It hangs down in soft vertical strands from the nose area to below the chin. Use cream yarn cut into short pieces and attach them like fringe so the beard looks full but not messy.

Beard Fringe

- Attach 10 strands on each side cheek, following a downward curve.
- Attach 12 shorter strands below the nose to create the dense central beard.
- Trim the beard into a rounded point, keeping the center strands slightly longer than the side strands.
Nose and Mouth Detail
The nose is a small black oval placed on top of the shaggy cream muzzle. The mouth is subtle, made with one tan or dark cream vertical stitch down the center, just like the soft line visible under the nose in the image.
- With black yarn and US 2 needles, CO 6 sts.
- Row 1: P all sts.
- Row 2: K1, M1R, K4, M1L, K1. 8 sts.

- BO all sts.
- Gather around the edge with black yarn, add a pinch of stuffing, and pull into a small oval.
- Sew the nose to the center of the muzzle, about 0.5 inch below the eyes.
- Use tan yarn to make one straight stitch from the lower nose into the beard, about 0.75 inch long.
White Eyebrows
The eyebrows are fluffy white tufts placed over the eyes. They should angle outward slightly, giving the Schnauzer a curious garden-helper expression.
- Cut 12 cream yarn strands, each 2.25 inches long.
- Attach 6 strands above the left eye and 6 strands above the right eye using the same fringe method as the beard.
- Comb the strands outward with your fingers.
- Trim each eyebrow to about 0.75 inch long, leaving the outer ends slightly longer.
- Add one small black embroidery stitch at the outer corner of each eye if the eyes need more definition.
Pointed Black Ears
The ears are triangular, black, and stand high on the head. They lean slightly outward, matching the playful pointed ear shape in the photo. Make two ears and sew them securely before attaching the bow.
- Make 2. With black yarn and US 3 needles, CO 16 sts.

- Wrap red yarn tightly around the center of the rectangle 8 times to pinch it into a bow.
- Knot the yarn at the back and leave a long tail for sewing.
- Sew the bow between the ears, slightly toward the dog’s right ear.
Joining Head to Body
Before sewing, check that the bib is facing forward, the arms are even, and the beard falls over the chest without hiding the buttons completely. The head should sit low enough to look cuddly but high enough to show the overalls.
- Place the head on the body neck with the cream muzzle centered over the bib.
- Pin the head in place from front, back, and both sides.
- Using matching yarn, sew around the neck twice with firm mattress stitches.
- Add extra stitches at the front under the beard to prevent wobbling.

Mushroom Crossbody Bag
The tiny mushroom bag hangs from a beige strap across the chest. The cap is reddish brown with white spots, and the stem is cream and tan. Keep it lightweight so it rests naturally against the overalls.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check the whole doll from the front before finishing. The black ears should frame the red bow, the white eyebrows should sit above the eyes, and the beard should fall over the upper chest without covering the overall bib completely.
- Sew the head firmly to the blue body after all face details are finished.
- Trim the beard last, using small cuts and checking the face often.
- Add the two tan overall buttons after the straps are sewn flat.
- Place the mushroom bag diagonally across the body and tack the strap at the shoulder.
- Arrange the yellow hat, gray watering can, trowel, and fork beside the doll for the full garden display.
Care Notes
This knitted Schnauzer is designed as a decorative handmade toy. Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not soak the doll, because the beard, bow, buttons, and small accessories may lose their shape with heavy washing.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The body is firmly stuffed and rounded under the blue overalls.
- The legs are even and the red shoes sit flat.
- The arms angle downward naturally under the striped sleeves.
- The ears are symmetrical and slightly pointed.
- The red bow is secure between the ears.
- The beard is full, soft, and trimmed into a rounded Schnauzer shape.
- The mushroom bag hangs across the chest on a beige strap.
- The yellow hat, watering can, trowel, and fork are complete.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Keep the doll away from direct sunlight for long periods to protect the blue, red, and yellow yarn colors. Store it in a dry place with the accessories beside it, not pressed under heavy items. If the beard becomes flattened, gently separate the strands with your fingers and reshape them by hand.
For long-term display, place the doll on a clean shelf or inside a clear case. Avoid rough brushing, machine washing, or tumble drying. Small buttons and accessories should be checked occasionally, especially if the doll is handled often.
