This sweet knitted garden cat wears blue denim-style overalls over a green-and-cream striped sweater, with a rounded beige head, pink muzzle, soft striped tail, brown sandals, a tiny flower on one ear, and garden accessories all around. Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US English knitting terms and is designed as a detailed knitted toy pattern. The main cat is worked mostly in the round so the surface looks smooth and plush like the image. Small accessories are knitted flat or in the round, then shaped with simple seaming and embroidery.

The cat has a large round head, short body, soft arms, straight overall legs, and a tapered striped tail. The overalls are knitted as part of the lower body, while the striped sweater sleeves and upper chest are worked in cream and green. The garden details are added after the main doll is stuffed and assembled.

Finished Size

  • Main cat: about 10.5 in tall from sandals to top of head.
  • Head width: about 4.75 in across the cheeks.
  • Body with overalls: about 4.25 in tall.
  • Leaf hat: about 5 in long and 3.75 in wide.
  • Watering can: about 2 in wide.
  • Crossbody bag: about 1.5 in tall.
  • Snails and plant pot: about 1 to 1.75 in each.

Skill Level

Intermediate beginner to intermediate. The shaping is simple, but the pattern includes many small pieces. Read each section before knitting, keep stitch markers in place, and stuff gently as you go so the toy keeps the soft rounded form shown in the image.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in warm beige for the cat head, body, hands, feet, ears, and tail base.
  • Worsted weight yarn in dusty blue for denim overalls.
  • Worsted weight yarn in leaf green for sweater stripes, cuffs, collar, leaf hat, and plant leaves.
  • Worsted weight yarn in cream for sweater stripes and sandal toes.
  • Worsted weight yarn in soft pink for the muzzle.
  • Small amounts of dark brown, tan, gray, yellow, black, red, white, pale yellow, pink, and blue.
  • US size 3 double-pointed needles or circular needle for magic loop.
  • US size 2 needles for smaller accessories if you want firmer pieces.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • Two 6 mm black safety eyes or black beads.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Scrap yarn for holding stitches.
  • Black embroidery floss for brows, mouth line, whisker dots, and stripes.
  • Two tiny tan buttons for overall straps, about 8 mm.
  • Optional peach flower-shaped beads for sandal decoration.

Gauge

Gauge is important because the doll needs firm fabric that hides stuffing. In stockinette with worsted yarn and US size 3 needles, aim for 6 stitches and 8 rounds per inch. If your fabric is loose, go down one needle size. If it is stiff and hard to shape, go up one needle size.

Abbreviations

  • CO: cast on.
  • BO: bind off.
  • K: knit.
  • P: purl.
  • St or sts: stitch or stitches.

  • WS: wrong side.
  • K2tog: knit 2 stitches together.
  • SSK: slip, slip, knit slipped stitches together.

General Notes

  • Work the cat head, body, legs, arms, and tail in stockinette in the round unless the pattern says otherwise.
  • Use a firm but gentle stuffing method. The head should be round and full, but not stretched.
  • When changing color for sweater stripes, carry the unused yarn loosely inside the piece.
  • For neat denim overalls, twist blue and sweater yarns together at color changes to avoid holes.
  • Leave long yarn tails on small pieces for sewing.
  • All sewing should be small and secure, especially if the toy will be handled often.

Seaming the Main Cat

Good assembly gives this doll the same rounded, gentle look as the image. Use matching yarn and small ladder stitches. Pin the pieces first, check the balance, and sew only when you are happy with the position.

  1. Sew the head to the green neck edge of the body. The muzzle should face forward and sit centered over the bib.
  2. Sew ears to the sides of the head between Rnds 11 and 20, tilted outward. The inner ears should face forward.
  3. Sew arms to the upper body just below the shoulder line, with the hands pointing slightly inward.
  4. Sew feet to the bottom of the overall legs. Keep the sandals facing forward and slightly apart.
  5. Sew the tail to the lower back left side, curving down and outward so it is visible from the front left side.
  6. Attach the crossbody bag after the arms are sewn. The strap should lie diagonally over the chest and pass between the overalls and one arm.
  7. Sew or tack the watering can to the left hand. Leave the spout pointing outward.
  8. Place the trowel inside the front pocket and secure with two hidden stitches.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  • Check the face before tying off embroidery knots. The eyes should sit close together above the pink muzzle.
  • Use one vertical black line below the muzzle to form the simple cat mouth.
  • Add three short gray forehead stripes and two side head stripes if desired.
  • Brush the knitted surface gently with clean fingers to smooth stuffing bumps.
  • Make sure the flower sits firmly above the left ear and does not cover the eye area.
  • Arrange the accessories around the cat: green leaf hat on the right, plant pot near the foot, pink snail on the right, and small brown snail on the left.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if beads, buttons, or safety eyes are used.
  • Press out moisture with a towel. Do not wring the toy.
  • Reshape the head, ears, and overalls while damp.
  • Air dry flat, away from direct sunlight.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, full, and wider at the cheeks.
  • The pink muzzle is centered and lightly stuffed.
  • The ears are cupped and angled outward.
  • The sweater stripes are green and cream, with green cuffs and collar.
  • The denim overalls have straps, buttons, pocket, cuffs, and raised leg details.
  • The sandals have brown straps, tan soles, and toe embroidery.
  • The tail has alternating beige and brown stripes and curves gently.
  • The leaf hat includes a raised center vein and tiny bee.
  • The bag, watering can, snails, plant pot, and trowel are all included.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

  • Store the cat in a dry place where the leaf hat and accessories will not be crushed.
  • Keep the doll away from rough hook-and-loop fasteners, pet claws, and sharp basket edges.
  • For dust, use a soft clean makeup brush and sweep gently in the direction of the knitted stitches.
  • If the overalls flatten, pinch the side seams and cuffs back into shape with your fingers.
  • If the bag strap stretches, remove it carefully and shorten the I-cord by sewing a small hidden fold near the back shoulder.
  • For long-term display, rotate the position occasionally so one side does not fade faster than the other.

Finishing Thought

This garden cat is a detailed keepsake project with many small knitted pieces, but each section is built from simple shapes. Work slowly, stuff lightly, and spend extra time on the face, overalls, sandals, and tiny garden accessories. Those final details create the soft handmade character of the finished doll.
