Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern is written in US English knitting terms. The doll is knitted mostly in the round on double-pointed needles or with the magic loop method. Smaller decorations are knitted flat, then sewn on carefully so the finished giraffe matches the soft handmade look shown in the image.
The finished giraffe measures about 12 inches tall from shoe soles to the top of the ossicones, not including the balloon strings. The body is slim with rounded hips, short legs, a long neck, a large oval head, and small decorative accessories.
- Skill level: Advanced beginner to intermediate
- Finished height: About 12 inches tall
- Main technique: Knitting in the round, simple shaping, embroidery, seaming
- Needles: US 2.5 / 3 mm double-pointed needles or circular needle for magic loop

Important Notes Before You Begin
Work with a firm gauge so the stuffing does not show through the knitted fabric. The pictured doll has smooth, tight stitches, so avoid loose tension. If your stitches look open, change to smaller needles.
The giraffe is made in separate knitted pieces. The legs and body are joined, while the head, arms, ears, ossicones, accessories, balloons, shoes, bag, and hat are made separately and sewn on. This gives better control over the exact shape.
- Use cream yarn for all main giraffe pieces unless another color is stated.
- Stuff each piece gradually as you knit or before closing.
- Keep the face centered by marking the front of the head with a removable marker.
- Sew all accessories with small hidden stitches.
- For the neatest Valentine look, place all hearts symmetrically where possible.

- Use black embroidery floss to sew two short vertical nostrils on the lower face, about 8 stitches apart.
- Add pink blush on both cheeks, just below and slightly outside the eyes.
- Embroider two red heart patches near the upper sides of the face, one on each cheek area above the blush.

- Fold each strand in half and pull through a stitch at the crown between the ossicones.
- Knot securely at the base.
- Trim some strands to 1 inch and leave a few slightly longer for the spiky tufted effect.
Neck Hearts and Body Spots
The giraffe has tiny red Valentine markings on the neck and upper body. These are embroidered after the body is stuffed and before the arms and accessories are attached.
- Embroider one red heart centered on the front neck.
- Embroider one smaller red heart on each side of the neck.
- Add two tiny red hearts on the upper front body above the bib.
- Add scattered small red hearts on the romper front and shorts, keeping them neat and balanced.
Each heart uses three stitches: two diagonal stitches meeting at the lower point, then one small stitch at the top center to round the shape. Keep the hearts small so they match the delicate scale of the image.

- Close the opening neatly.
- Use white yarn to embroider tiny V-shaped heart marks across the front of each balloon.
Balloon Strings
- Cut three white yarn strands or cotton cords, each about 8 inches long.
- Attach one string to the lower point of each heart balloon.
- Gather the three strings together near the giraffe’s mittens.
- Sew the gathered point between the red mittens so the doll appears to hold the balloons.
- Optional: Insert a covered thin wire inside each string for upright display.
Tiny Red Balloon Bow
A tiny red bow sits where the balloon strings meet, matching the small decorative bow visible near the strings.
- With red yarn, CO 8 sts.

- Next row: Sl1, K2tog, pass slipped st over. Fasten off.
Block each tiny heart lightly with steam from a safe distance. Sew hearts on with matching yarn or fine thread. Keep the hearts flat so they do not overpower the delicate face and outfit.
Assembly Order
Use this order for the cleanest finish. The shape of the giraffe depends on careful placement, especially the head, neck, ears, and accessories.
- Stuff the legs, shorts, body, and neck firmly.
- Close the top of the neck with the long tail, but leave it slightly flat for head attachment.
- Position the head on the neck and pin in place.
- Sew around the neck twice, using small firm stitches.
- Attach ears on both sides of the upper head.
- Sew ossicones to the top of the head and add hair tufts between them.
- Add the red bow near the left ossicone.
- Attach arms below the neck, angled toward the center front.
- Sew the romper bib and green straps in place.
- Add shoes, shoe straps, and white bows.
- Add the bag and crossbody strap.
- Attach balloon strings to the mittens.
- Place the Valentine hat beside the doll or sew it lightly to one hand for display.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check that the face is centered before making permanent stitches. The black eyes should sit evenly, the nostrils should be short and vertical, and the blush should be soft. Add only a little blush at first, then build up gently.
- Sew the head firmly so it does not wobble.
- Shape the muzzle with your hands while the stuffing is still adjustable.
- Keep both ears symmetrical and slightly lifted.
- Place the red face hearts evenly on both sides.
- Sew all loose yarn tails into the inside of the doll.
Care Notes
This knitted giraffe is best used as a decorative handmade item. Because it includes small buttons, embroidered details, and attached accessories, it is not recommended for babies or pets.
- Spot clean only with a damp cloth.
- Do not machine wash if safety eyes, buttons, or wires are used.
- Let the doll air dry completely before storing.
- Keep away from rough play to protect the balloons and bag strap.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- Head is oval with a fuller lower muzzle.
- Large cream ears are attached at the upper sides of the head.
- Brown ossicones and hair tufts are centered on top.
- Red bow sits near the left ossicone.
- Romper has red and green stripes with small red hearts.
- Red mittens meet at the center to hold the balloon strings.
- Green crossbody bag hangs at the right hip.
- Red shoes have small white bows.
- Two red heart balloons and one green heart balloon are attached.
- Red Valentine hat has a cream band and red dot details.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
To preserve the shape, store the giraffe upright or lying flat in a dry box. Do not crush the heart balloons or bend the neck sharply. If dust collects on the surface, use a soft brush and gentle strokes.
For long-term storage, wrap the doll in acid-free tissue or clean cotton fabric. Keep it away from direct sunlight, strong humidity, and sharp objects. Refresh the shape by gently pressing the stuffing back into place with your fingers.
If any accessory loosens, reattach it with matching yarn and small stitches. Check the balloon strings, bag strap, shoe bows, and head bow first, since these tiny details receive the most movement during handling.
