Finished Size

  • Finished height: about 11 inches from sandal sole to pom-pom top.
  • Head width: about 4.5 inches across the cheeks.
  • Body height: about 4 inches from neck to lower sweater hem.
  • Skill level: confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Construction: the puppy is knitted mostly in the round, with small flat pieces for accessories.

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in tan, teal blue, cream, pink, red, black, brown, orange, gray, beige, purple, yellow, and small flower colors.
  • US 2.5 or US 3 double-pointed needles, or circular needles for magic loop.
  • US 2 needles for glasses cord, bag details, and tiny flowers.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Two black safety eyes or glossy black buttons, 9 to 10 mm.
  • Two tiny pink heart buttons for sandal sides.
  • One tiny flower button for the orange bag flap.
  • Tapestry needle, stitch markers, pins, scissors.
  • Black embroidery floss for mouth line and eye outline.
  • Optional thin craft wire for glasses and watering can handle.

Gauge

Gauge is important for a firm toy. Work tightly so stuffing does not show between stitches. In stockinette stitch, aim for 7 stitches and 10 rounds per inch using DK yarn and US 2.5 or US 3 needles. Change needle size if your fabric is too loose.

Pattern Notes

This puppy is shaped with a large round head, a smaller sweater-covered body, short arms, short legs, wide oval feet, and long floppy ears. The head should look slightly oversized compared with the body, matching the sweet toy style shown in the image.

Stuff each piece firmly but not stiffly. The nose and muzzle should be rounded, the cheeks should stay smooth, and the sweater should sit neatly around the shoulders. Use pins before sewing so the glasses, ears, hat, and bag sit at the correct angles.

Head

Use tan yarn. Work in the round. The head is a rounded oval with a wider lower face and a slightly narrower crown under the hat.

Stuff the body firmly. The teal sweater should look like a thick pullover with a high ribbed neck. Sew the body to the underside of the head, keeping the head slightly tilted forward for the same sweet expression as the image.

Sweater Snowflake Motif

The sweater in the image has cream snowflakes and small cream dots. After knitting the teal body, duplicate stitch the motifs on the front and sleeves.

  • Center front snowflake: place over 9 stitches wide and 7 rows tall.
  • Side snowflakes: place one 5-stitch motif on each side of the front.
  • Lower dots: embroider small cream V stitches across the lower sweater, about 1 round above the hem ridge.
  • Neck dots: embroider cream stitches below the ribbed collar, evenly spaced around the front half.

For a 9-stitch snowflake, make one vertical line of 7 cream duplicate stitches, one horizontal line of 7 duplicate stitches through the center, and four short diagonal arms. Keep the tension smooth so the sweater fabric does not pucker.

Legs

Make two legs in tan. The legs are short and straight, visible below the sweater.

  1. CO 14 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1 to 16: K around.
  3. Rnd 17: Repeat K5, K2tog around. 12 sts.
  4. Rnds 18 to 20: K around.
  5. BO, leaving a long sewing tail.

Stuff each leg lightly. Sew the upper ends to the lower body with the legs set apart, leaving a small gap at the center so the puppy can stand with its feet angled outward.

Feet and Toes

Make two oval feet in tan. They should be wider than the legs and visible inside the sandals.

  1. CO 8 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K around.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in each st around. 16 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: K around.

  8. Rnd 10: K2tog around. 8 sts.
  9. Cut yarn, pull closed, and weave in.

Stuff each foot firmly. Sew one foot to the bottom of each leg, angled slightly outward. With tan yarn or darker beige embroidery floss, stitch three toe lines on the front of each foot.

Arms

Make two arms. Start with tan paws, then change to teal for sweater sleeves. The arms are short and angle slightly downward from the shoulders.

  1. With tan yarn, CO 10 sts and join in the round.

Stuff lightly, leaving the shoulder end flatter. Duplicate stitch tiny cream snow marks on each sleeve. Sew the arms to the sides of the sweater, just below the collar, with the paws pointing slightly forward.

Ears

Make two floppy ears in tan. The ears are long, soft, and hang down beside the head, beginning near the glasses line.

  1. CO 12 sts.
  2. Row 1: P across.
  3. Row 2: Kfb, K10, Kfb. 14 sts.
  4. Row 3: P across.

  11. Row 29: P across.
  12. Row 30: Ssk, K8, K2tog. 10 sts.
  13. BO, leaving a long sewing tail.

Fold each ear lengthwise very lightly and sew the cast-on edge to the side of the head. The ears should sit behind the glasses, with the lower tips curving inward toward the cheeks.

  13. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, and pull closed.

Make a small pom-pom using pale pink and medium pink yarn together. Trim it round and sew it firmly to the top of the hat. Place the hat on the head and sew invisibly around the back brim so it stays in position.

Heart-Shaped Glasses

The glasses are the most important facial accessory. They are bright red, oversized, and shaped like two connected hearts. For the cleanest result, knit red i-cord and shape it around thin craft wire.

Red I-Cord for Heart Frames

  1. With red yarn and US 2 needles, CO 3 sts.
  2. K 3 sts. Do not turn.
  3. Slide sts to the other end of the needle.
  4. Bring yarn across the back and K 3 again.
  5. Repeat until the cord measures 18 inches.
  6. BO and weave in ends.

Thread optional thin craft wire through the i-cord. Shape one heart around the left eye patch, then a small bridge at the center, then a second heart around the right eye patch. Each heart should be about 1.6 inches wide.

  • Sew the top dip of each heart above the eye patch.
  • Sew the outer curves near the sides of the face.
  • Sew the inner points close together over the nose bridge.
  • Add two short red i-cord arms running toward the ears.

Use small red stitches to tack the frames in place. Keep the heart outline raised and rounded, not flat. The glasses should sit slightly above the nose and cover part of the white eye patches.

Sandals

Bag Strap

  1. With orange yarn, CO 3 sts.
  2. Work i-cord until it measures 12 inches.
  3. BO.

Sew one end of the strap to the upper right side of the bag and the other end to the upper left side. Place the strap diagonally across the puppy from one shoulder to the opposite hip. Tack the bag to the sweater so it does not swing.

Mini Watering Can

The watering can is knitted in soft beige-gray yarn. It has a small boxy body, a side handle, a short spout, and a top opening.

Can Body

  1. With beige-gray yarn, CO 18 sts and join in the round.

Handle

  1. CO 3 sts with beige-gray yarn.
  2. Work i-cord for 5 inches.
  3. BO.

Curve the i-cord into a handle and sew both ends to the opposite side of the can. For a firmer handle, insert thin craft wire into the i-cord before sewing.

Flower Basket

The basket is orange-brown with a rounded base, arched handle, and tiny colorful flowers inside. It sits beside the puppy as a separate prop.

Basket Base

  7. Rnds 6 to 13: Work seed st around.
  8. Rnd 14: P around for top rim.
  9. BO.

Stuff the basket very lightly, keeping the top open. Shape the base round and the sides slightly flared. Do not overstuff, because the flowers need space at the top.

Basket Handle

  1. CO 3 sts with orange-brown yarn.
  2. Work i-cord for 7 inches.
  3. BO.

Arch the handle over the basket and sew each end to opposite sides. Tack it firmly with several stitches so it stands upright.

Tiny Flowers

  • Flower center: with yellow yarn, CO 3 sts, K one row, BO, roll into a tiny knot, and stitch closed.
  • Petals: with pink, purple, blue, or cream yarn, CO 5 sts, BO, fold into a loop, and sew around the center.

Facial Embroidery

Use black embroidery floss for the mouth. Start directly under the nose, make one straight vertical stitch down the muzzle, then split into a tiny Y-shaped smile. Keep the smile small and soft so the puppy’s expression remains gentle.

Use black yarn or floss to outline the white eye patches. The outline should follow the oval shape but stay thin because the red glasses are the main frame. Add one tiny white highlight stitch on each black eye if you are using plain buttons.

Assembly Order

  1. Sew the muzzle to the lower front of the head.
  2. Sew the black nose to the top center of the muzzle.
  3. Add the white eye patches and secure the black eyes.
  4. Embroider the eye outlines, nose line, and tiny smile.
  5. Sew the body to the head, keeping the body centered under the muzzle.
  6. Sew the legs to the lower body and the feet to the legs.
  7. Add the sandals and heart buttons.
  8. Sew the arms to the sweater sides.
  9. Sew the ears behind the glasses line.
  10. Place and sew the pink hat on top of the head.
  11. Shape and tack the red heart glasses over the eye patches.
  12. Add the orange bag across the sweater.
  13. Place the watering can and flower basket as separate props or tack them lightly to the display base.

Positioning Details for an Image-Matched Look

  • The head should be larger than the body, about one and one-quarter times the body width.
  • The muzzle should sit low and centered, with the nose covering the upper muzzle.
  • The ears should begin level with the eyes and hang down to the lower cheek.
  • The sweater collar should touch the bottom of the head with almost no visible neck.
  • The glasses should be oversized and heart-shaped, touching the ears at the outer edges.
  • The bag should rest on the puppy’s lower right side, with the strap crossing the chest diagonally.
  • The hat brim should cover the top head curve and sit behind the glasses.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After every piece is attached, check the puppy from the front. Adjust the glasses first, because they control the expression. The heart frames should be even, the bridge should sit above the nose, and both eyes should remain visible inside the frames.

Shape the cheeks by gently pressing the stuffed head from both sides. Add one or two hidden stitches near the lower ears if they need to curve inward. Smooth the sweater and make sure the cream snowflakes are centered and clearly visible.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only with cool water and a soft cloth.
  • Do not machine wash if you used buttons, wire, or safety eyes.
  • Let the toy air dry completely before storing.
  • Keep away from pets and very young children if small buttons are attached.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Both heart glasses are the same size and securely sewn.
  • The white eye patches are visible inside the glasses.
  • The black nose is centered on the muzzle.
  • The pink pom-pom is firmly attached.
  • The snowflake sweater motifs are balanced across the front.
  • The sandals have pink heart buttons on the outside edges.
  • The orange bag sits diagonally across the body.
  • The watering can and flower basket are shaped and lightly stuffed.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, support the head and body while cleaning. Dab stains gently instead of rubbing. If the pom-pom becomes flattened, fluff it with your fingers after drying. Store the puppy upright in a dry place away from direct sunlight so the pink, teal, and red colors stay bright.

For long-term display, place the puppy on a shelf where the glasses and accessories will not be bumped. If the heart frames loosen over time, add a few matching red stitches at the outer curves and center bridge.
