Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This free knitting pattern is written for a small seated bunny doll with oversized head proportions, rounded cheeks, floppy oval ears, short arms, dangling legs, and removable clothing-style accessories. The finished look follows the image closely, with a soft plush body and clearly visible knitted texture.

The bunny is worked mostly in small pieces, then stuffed and seamed. This method makes shaping easier for newer knitters and gives you better control over the face, overalls, straps, bag position, sandals, and small garden details.

  • Finished bunny height: about 11 in / 28 cm from top of head to bottom of sandals.
  • Seated height: about 8.5 in / 21.5 cm.
  • Head width: about 4.5 in / 11.5 cm across the cheeks.
  • Gauge: 6 sts and 8 rows = 1 in / 2.5 cm in stockinette, firmly knitted.
  • Recommended skill level: confident beginner to intermediate.

Yarn and Materials

Use a smooth DK or light worsted yarn for the bunny and outfits. The sample look depends on firm knitted fabric, so use needles smaller than the yarn label suggests. The stitches should be tight enough that stuffing does not show through.

  • DK yarn in cream, about 90 yd, for face, body, arms, legs, muzzle, and paws.
  • DK yarn in medium gray, about 65 yd, for head side patches and floppy ears.
  • DK yarn in soft blue, about 55 yd, for overalls stripes and sandal trim.
  • DK yarn in white, about 45 yd, for stripes, eye patches, flowers, and sandal soles.
  • DK yarn in red or rust red, about 35 yd, for the crossbody bag and strap.
  • Small amounts of blush pink, tan, brown, green, yellow, black, and terracotta yarn.
  • US 2 / 2.75 mm knitting needles.
  • US 1 / 2.25 mm needles for straps, flowers, and small props.
  • Two 10 mm black safety eyes or sew-on glossy black eyes.
  • One small black oval safety nose, or black yarn for embroidery.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Two small tan buttons for overall straps.
  • One small tan button for the red bag flap.
  • Two tiny side buttons for sandals, optional.
  • Tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors, pins, and removable stitch holders.

Special Stitch for the Red Bag

Important Pattern Notes

All main doll pieces are knitted flat and seamed unless another method is stated. Leave long tails for sewing. When stuffing, add small amounts at a time so the shape stays round and smooth. The head should be firm, while the ears should remain lightly stuffed or unstuffed.

The body is intentionally smaller than the head. This gives the bunny the cute toy-like proportion shown in the image. The face has large rounded cheeks, a vertical center cream panel, gray side patches, a small black nose, and soft embroidered mouth lines.

  • Use cream yarn for the center head and muzzle.
  • Use gray yarn for both side head patches and floppy ears.
  • Work the overalls as a separate garment-style piece, then sew them onto the body.
  • The red bag crosses from the bunny’s left shoulder to the right hip.
  • Attach sandals after the legs are stuffed and seamed.

Head Front Center Panel

This cream panel creates the long pale section running from the top of the forehead down between the eyes and into the upper face. Knit firmly and keep the edges neat because the gray side panels will be seamed to both sides.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 12 sts.
  2. Row 1: Purl all sts.
  3. Row 2: K1, m1, k10, m1, k1. 14 sts.
  4. Row 3: Purl all sts.
  5. Row 4: K1, m1, k12, m1, k1. 16 sts.
  6. Rows 5 to 10: Work in stockinette, purling WS rows and knitting RS rows.

  11. Rows 15 to 18: Work in stockinette.
  12. BO all sts, leaving a 14 in tail.

Gray Head Side Panels

Make two mirrored gray panels. These form the rounded sides of the bunny head and give the face the gray-and-cream patch placement seen in the image. The shaping widens around the cheeks, then narrows near the top and lower jaw.

Left Side Panel

  1. With gray yarn, CO 10 sts.
  2. Row 1: Purl all sts.
  3. Row 2: K1, m1, k8, m1, k1. 12 sts.

  14. Row 21: Purl all sts.
  15. Row 22: K2, ssk, k4, k2tog, k2. 10 sts.
  16. BO all sts, leaving a long sewing tail.

Right Side Panel

  1. Work exactly as for the left side panel.
  2. When sewing, flip the panel so the shaping mirrors the opposite side.
  3. Keep the smooth stockinette side facing outward.

Back of Head

The back head piece closes the round skull and gives enough depth for the floppy ears to sit on the sides. This piece is gray, matching the gray side areas and making the cream center face stand out clearly.

  1. With gray yarn, CO 18 sts.
  2. Row 1: Purl all sts.
  3. Row 2: K2, m1, k14, m1, k2. 20 sts.
  4. Row 3: Purl all sts.
  5. Row 4: K2, m1, k16, m1, k2. 22 sts.
  6. Rows 5 to 14: Work in stockinette.
  7. Row 15: Purl all sts.
  8. Row 16: K2, ssk, k14, k2tog, k2. 20 sts.

  12. Row 20: K2, ssk, k10, k2tog, k2. 16 sts.
  13. BO all sts, leaving a 20 in tail.

Head Assembly

Sew the cream center panel between the two gray side panels. Use mattress stitch and keep the lower part gently curved to form the rounded cheek area. Sew the back head piece to the joined front, leaving a bottom opening for stuffing.

  • Place safety eyes between Rows 11 and 12 of the front face area.
  • Set eyes about 8 sts apart, one on each side of the cream center panel.
  • Add small white felt or knitted eye highlights if desired.
  • Stuff the head firmly, especially the cheeks and forehead.
  • Close the bottom opening with small whipstitches.

Rounded Muzzle and Cheeks

The muzzle is a separate cream oval sewn onto the lower face. Two rounded cheek bumps are shaped with stuffing and stitches. The image shows full, soft cheeks with a central dip under the black nose.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 10 sts.
  2. Row 1: Purl all sts.
  3. Row 2: K1, m1, k8, m1, k1. 12 sts.
  4. Row 3: Purl all sts.
  5. Row 4: K1, m1, k10, m1, k1. 14 sts.
  6. Rows 5 to 10: Work in stockinette.
  7. Row 11: Purl all sts.
  8. Row 12: K2, ssk, k6, k2tog, k2. 12 sts.
  9. Row 13: Purl all sts.
  10. Row 14: K2, ssk, k4, k2tog, k2. 10 sts.
  11. BO all sts, leaving a 20 in tail.

Thread the tail around the edge of the muzzle piece. Add a small amount of stuffing, then pull slightly to cup the piece into an oval. Sew it to the lower face, centered under the eyes. Shape a vertical groove down the middle with two tight stitches.

Nose and Mouth

Use a small black oval safety nose or embroider one. The nose should sit at the top center of the muzzle, slightly above the cheek groove. The mouth is simple and soft, with a short vertical line and two tiny curved lower lines.

  • Place the nose at the upper center of the muzzle.
  • Embroider a vertical black line down 4 rows from the nose.
  • Add a small curved stitch to the left and right at the bottom.
  • Do not over-tighten the mouth stitches, or the muzzle will pucker too much.

Blush Cheeks

The bunny has peach-pink circular blush on both cheeks. You can duplicate stitch with pink yarn, lightly apply fabric-safe blush, or knit two tiny circles and sew them on. Knitted circles give the most handmade look.

  1. With blush pink yarn and smaller needles, CO 5 sts.
  2. Row 1: Purl all sts.
  3. Row 2: K1, m1, k3, m1, k1. 7 sts.
  4. Row 3: Purl all sts.
  5. Row 4: K2, k2tog, k1, ssk, k2. 5 sts.
  6. BO all sts and make a second cheek.
  7. Sew one cheek to each side of the muzzle, just below the eyes.

Floppy Ears

The ears are long, gray, rounded, and lightly textured. They hang from the sides of the head and reach the cheek level. Knit four ear pieces, then seam two together for each ear. Light stuffing is optional, but the ears should remain flexible.

Outer Ear Pieces

  1. With gray yarn, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: Purl all sts.
  3. Row 2: K1, m1, k6, m1, k1. 10 sts.
  4. Row 3: Purl all sts.
  5. Row 4: K1, m1, k8, m1, k1. 12 sts.
  6. Rows 5 to 8: Work in stockinette.
  7. Row 9: Purl all sts.
  8. Row 10: K1, m1, k10, m1, k1. 14 sts.
  9. Rows 11 to 30: Work in stockinette.
  10. Row 31: Purl all sts.
  11. Row 32: K2, ssk, k6, k2tog, k2. 12 sts.
  12. Row 33: Purl all sts.
  13. Row 34: K2, ssk, k4, k2tog, k2. 10 sts.
  14. Row 35: Purl all sts.
  15. Row 36: K1, ssk, k4, k2tog, k1. 8 sts.
  16. BO all sts.
  17. Make 2 outer pieces.

Inner Ear Pieces

  1. With gray yarn, CO 8 sts.
  2. Work Rows 1 to 36 exactly as for the outer ear pieces.
  3. Make 2 inner pieces.
  4. Place one outer and one inner piece together with RS facing.
  5. Sew around the side and bottom edges, leaving the top cast-on edge open.
  6. Turn RS out and press flat with your fingers.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Sew each ear to the side of the head, starting about 5 rows below the top curve. Angle the ears slightly forward. Secure across the top edge, then add two hidden stitches lower down so the ears droop neatly beside the cheeks.

Body

The body is short and rounded, with the overalls covering most of the torso. Knit the body in cream because the visible neck, sleeves, paws, and lower legs match the cream yarn in the image.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 18 sts.
  2. Row 1: Purl all sts.
  3. Row 2: K2, m1, k14, m1, k2. 20 sts.
  4. Row 3: Purl all sts.
  5. Row 4: K2, m1, k16, m1, k2. 22 sts.
  6. Rows 5 to 18: Work in stockinette.
  7. Row 19: Purl all sts.
  8. Row 20: K3, ssk, k12, k2tog, k3. 20 sts.
  9. Row 21: Purl all sts.
  10. Row 22: K3, ssk, k10, k2tog, k3. 18 sts.
  11. Rows 23 to 26: Work in stockinette.
  12. BO all sts, leaving a 20 in tail.

Fold the body piece with RS together and sew the back seam. Gather the bottom edge slightly, stuff firmly into a pear shape, then close. Keep the top neck opening flatter so the head sits securely and slightly forward.

Neck Rib Collar

The image shows a small cream ribbed neck area between the head and overalls. This collar also hides the join between head and body. Knit it as a narrow band and sew it around the upper body.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 28 sts.
  2. Row 1: K1, p1 across.
  3. Row 2: K1, p1 across.
  4. Row 3: K1, p1 across.
  5. Row 4: K1, p1 across.
  6. BO in rib.
  7. Sew the short ends together to make a ring.
  8. Place around the neck and stitch in place.

Arms

The arms are slim, cream, and hang beside the body. The upper arm has small sweater-style colorwork near the shoulder and a simple rounded paw at the end. Make two arms the same way.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 10 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: Work in stockinette.
  3. Row 5: With red yarn, k1, cream k2, red k1, cream k2, red k1, cream k3.
  4. Row 6: Purl all sts in established colors.
  5. Row 7: With brown yarn, k2, cream k1, brown k1, cream k2, brown k1, cream k3.
  6. Row 8: Purl all sts in established colors.
  7. Rows 9 to 20: With cream yarn, work in stockinette.
  8. Row 21: K2tog across. 5 sts.
  9. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, and pull tight.
  10. Sew the side seam, lightly stuff, and close the top.
  11. Make a second arm.

To shape the paw, wrap cream yarn once around the lower end about 3 rows above the gathered tip. Pull gently to make a wrist. Embroider two small vertical paw lines on the front of each hand.

Legs

The legs are short and dangle below the striped overalls. The lower leg is cream and ribbed-looking, with sandals placed over the feet. Knit two legs and stuff them firmly enough to hold their shape.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 12 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: Work k1, p1 rib across.
  3. Rows 5 to 16: Work in stockinette.
  4. Row 17: K1, m1, k10, m1, k1. 14 sts.
  5. Rows 18 to 22: Work in stockinette.
  6. Row 23: K2, ssk, k6, k2tog, k2. 12 sts.
  7. Row 24: Purl all sts.
  8. Row 25: K2tog across. 6 sts.
  9. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, and pull tight.
  10. Sew the back seam and stuff evenly.
  11. Make a second leg.

Attach the legs to the lower front of the body so they hang over the bench style, as shown in the image. Place them about 6 sts apart. Angle the feet slightly outward for a relaxed seated pose.

  • Use red yarn to stitch tiny diamond marks between the brown motifs.
  • Keep each motif 2 sts wide and 2 rows tall.
  • Place motifs across the shoulders, upper sleeves, and visible chest.
  • Do not add too many stitches, because the look should stay delicate.

Spout and Handle

  1. For the spout, CO 6 sts with cream yarn.
  2. Work 12 rows in stockinette.
  3. BO all sts, seam into a narrow tube, and stuff very lightly.
  4. Sew spout to one side of the can at an upward angle.
  5. For the handle, CO 4 sts and knit every row for 20 rows.
  6. BO and sew in a curved shape on the opposite side.

Placing the Head on the Body

Pin the head to the body before sewing. The head should sit slightly forward and look large compared with the torso. This forward tilt helps the eyes and muzzle face the viewer, matching the gentle expression shown in the image.

  1. Place the body upright in a seated position.
  2. Set the head on the neck collar with the muzzle centered over the bib.
  3. Pin through the front, back, and sides.
  4. Sew around the neck twice with cream yarn.
  5. Add extra hidden stitches under the chin for strength.

Attaching Arms and Legs

The arms hang down beside the body and rest near the overalls. The legs sit forward and slightly apart. The sandals should be visible from the front, with the flower decorations placed on the outside edge of each foot.

  • Sew arms to the upper body just below the shoulder colorwork.
  • Angle arms slightly forward so the hands rest beside the bag and overalls.
  • Sew legs to the lower body before permanently closing the overalls if needed.
  • Check that the bunny can sit steadily on a flat surface.
  • Add a few hidden stitches through the overalls to hold the seated pose.

Facial Eye Details

The eyes in the image are shiny and expressive, with soft white highlights and dark upper lashes. If using safety eyes, add white duplicate stitches beside each eye after the head is stuffed. Keep the stitches tiny and symmetrical.

  • Use white yarn to add one small highlight stitch near the outer edge of each eye.
  • Use black embroidery floss for two short curved lashes above each eye.
  • Use gray yarn to soften the eye area with one short stitch under each eye.
  • Keep the expression gentle, not overly dramatic.

Color Placement Guide

Use this guide to keep the finished bunny close to the image. The strongest visual features are the cream center face, gray floppy ears, full cream muzzle, blue striped overalls, red crossbody bag, and flower sandals.

  • Center face: cream from forehead to muzzle.
  • Head sides: medium gray around both eyes and down the sides.
  • Ears: gray, long, rounded, and drooping.
  • Body and limbs: cream with small red and brown shoulder details.
  • Overalls: blue and white thin horizontal stripes.
  • Bag: rust red with bobble texture and tan button.
  • Sandals: tan sole, cream band, brown wrap straps, white daisy.
  • Hair flower: cream petals, pink center, green leaves.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After all pieces are attached, check the bunny from the front and side. Adjust the ears so they hang evenly. Make sure the bag strap crosses the chest cleanly and does not cover both overall buttons.

  • Secure loose yarn tails inside the body and head.
  • Shape the cheeks by gently pressing around the muzzle.
  • Add blush only after the face embroidery is complete.
  • Steam blocking is not recommended for the stuffed toy.
  • Use your fingers to smooth and shape the overalls, sandals, and bag.

Care Notes

This knitted bunny is best used as a decorative handmade toy. If it will be handled often, sew every accessory securely and avoid small buttons for children under three years old. Replace buttons with embroidered circles when needed.

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if safety eyes, buttons, or tiny props are attached.
  • Let the bunny air dry completely before storing.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight to protect the soft colors.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The cream center face is straight and centered.
  • The gray ears are even and hang beside the cheeks.
  • The muzzle is full, rounded, and lightly divided in the middle.
  • The eyes are level and securely attached.
  • The blue striped overalls fit smoothly around the body.
  • The tan buttons sit at the top corners of the bib.
  • The red bag rests at the lower right side of the body.
  • The sandals are attached firmly and decorated with tiny flowers.
  • The garden props are stuffed lightly and stand neatly.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For long-term display, keep the bunny in a dry place with good airflow. Dust it gently with a soft brush. If the red bag, sandals, or flower clip collect dust, clean them with a slightly damp cloth instead of soaking the whole doll.

When storing the bunny, wrap it loosely in acid-free tissue or clean cotton fabric. Do not compress the floppy ears or muzzle for long periods. Reshape the head, cheeks, and overalls with your fingers after removing the doll from storage.

If a stitch loosens over time, repair it with matching yarn and a tapestry needle. Check the bag strap, ear bases, and sandal straps first, because these small parts are handled most often. A few careful reinforcing stitches will keep the bunny looking fresh and neat.
