Knitting Tutorial: Seaside Puppy in Nautical Sweater and Lighthouse Bag – Free Knitting Pattern.

This free knitting pattern makes a soft seaside puppy with a rounded cream muzzle, gray head, floppy ears, embroidered sleepy eyes, pink cheeks, and a tiny flower on the head. The puppy wears a blue-and-cream striped nautical sweater, blue shorts, cream shoes with blue wave trim, and a lighthouse crossbody bag. Extra seaside props include a straw hat, fish basket, and small fishing rod.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size and Construction Style

The finished puppy measures about 11 inches tall when worked with DK yarn and 2.75 mm needles. The body is shaped firmly so it can stand with support, while the sweater, shorts, shoes, bag, and accessories are knitted as separate detailed pieces.

  • Finished height: about 11 inches from shoes to top of head.
  • Head width: about 5 inches across the cheeks.
  • Body height: about 4 inches before head attachment.
  • Leg length: about 2 inches plus shoes.
  • Style: knitted toy with sewn seams and embroidered details.
  • Skill level: adventurous beginner to intermediate.

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in cream, light gray, denim blue, navy blue, red, black, white, tan, pale pink, pale yellow, soft green, brown, and small amounts of lavender or pale purple.
  • 2.75 mm knitting needles for toy pieces.
  • 2.5 mm knitting needles for tighter accessories and embroidery patches.
  • Polyester fiberfill stuffing.
  • Yarn needle for seaming and embroidery.
  • Removable stitch markers.
  • Small amount of firm cardboard or plastic canvas for the basket base, optional.
  • Black embroidery floss or split black yarn for eyes, mouth, anchor, and paw marks.

Gauge

For the toy body, aim for a firm fabric that hides stuffing. A useful gauge is about 7 stitches and 10 rows per inch in stockinette stitch on 2.75 mm needles. Exact gauge is less important than firmness, but matching the gauge keeps the proportions close to the puppy shown.

  • Toy fabric: 28 stitches and 40 rows over 4 inches.
  • Accessory fabric: 30 stitches and 42 rows over 4 inches.
  • Important: if stuffing shows through, go down one needle size.

Abbreviations

  • CO: cast on.
  • BO: bind off.
  • K: knit.
  • P: purl.
  • St st: stockinette stitch, knit right-side rows and purl wrong-side rows.
  • G st: garter stitch, knit every row.
  • K2tog: knit 2 stitches together.
  • P2tog: purl 2 stitches together.
  • Kfb: knit into the front and back of the same stitch.
  • SSK: slip 1, slip 1, knit slipped stitches together through back loops.
  • Sl1: slip 1 stitch purlwise.
  • RS: right side.
  • WS: wrong side.

Color Notes

The puppy has a light gray top head and ears, with a cream lower face, muzzle, paws, and legs. The sweater uses narrow horizontal stripes in denim blue and cream, with darker blue ribbing. The shorts are denim blue. The lighthouse bag uses white, red, and navy blue.

  • Main cream: lower face, muzzle, hands, legs, shoe fronts.
  • Light gray: upper head, back head, floppy ears.
  • Denim blue: sweater stripes, cuffs, shorts, shoe trims.
  • Navy blue: lighthouse base, sailboat lines, anchor, shoe details.
  • Red: lighthouse stripes, small sail, fishing float.
  • Tan: crossbody cord, straw hat, basket, fishing rod handle.

Main Head

The head is large and rounded, wider at the cheeks than at the top. It is knitted flat in two shaped pieces, then seamed and stuffed firmly. The cream face patch is worked into the front piece using color changes.

Neck Join and Standing Balance

The large head should sit low and snug on the body, just above the blue ribbed collar. The puppy has a cute chibi proportion, so the head is almost as wide as the shoulders and much larger than the body.

  1. Place the sweater on the stuffed body before attaching the head.
  2. Insert the neck top slightly into the lower head opening.
  3. Pin the head so the face points forward and the ears hang evenly.
  4. Sew around the neck twice using cream yarn.
  5. Add extra stitches at the back neck if the head tilts forward.
  6. Check that both shoes touch the surface evenly.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Finish all pieces in layers. Attach body, legs, arms, sweater, shorts, shoes, head, ears, muzzle, and nose first. Then add embroidery, flower, bag, and props. Work slowly because small placement changes make the puppy look more accurate.

  • Head: centered, slightly oversized, and rounded at the cheeks.
  • Ears: attached low enough to droop beside the face.
  • Sweater: stripes straight across the chest and sleeves.
  • Bag: strap crosses from left shoulder to right hip.
  • Expression: closed eyes curve upward for a peaceful smile.
  • Cheeks: pink stitches sit beside the muzzle, not too low.

Care Notes

Spot clean the puppy with cool water and mild soap. Do not soak the toy if the face embroidery, hat brim, basket base, or fishing rod contains shaping material. Press gently in a towel and air dry flat.

  • Keep away from high heat.
  • Do not machine dry.
  • Reshape ears, muzzle, shoes, and bag while damp.
  • Trim loose yarn ends only after checking seams are secure.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The gray head top blends smoothly into the cream lower face.
  • The muzzle is padded and centered under the black nose.
  • Both closed eyes are the same height.
  • Pink cheek stitches are even on both sides.
  • The blue-and-cream sweater stripes line up at the side seams.
  • The sailboats and anchor are visible above the sweater hem.
  • The lighthouse bag hangs at the right side of the body.
  • The shoes have blue wave trim and center toe lines.
  • The straw hat, basket of fish, and fishing rod are finished as display props.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the puppy upright or lying flat in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Place the small accessories in a soft bag when not displayed, especially the flower, fishing rod, float, and tiny fish. This helps prevent stretching, dust, and accidental snagging.

  • Use a lint roller gently on the sweater and shorts.
  • Use a soft toothbrush to clean the basket texture.
  • Keep embroidered details from rubbing against rough surfaces.
  • Refresh the shape by gently steaming from a distance, never pressing directly.
  • Check the bag strap and ears occasionally because these parts move the most.
