This sweet knitted garden kitten has a black-and-white tuxedo face, bright blue eyes, soft cream limbs, aqua-blue floral overalls, tiny embroidered pockets, white sandals with ladybug details, a straw sun hat with a navy band and bee, a yellow gingham basket filled with fruit, little mushrooms, flowers, and a butterfly accent.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Finished Size
- Kitten height: about 9.5 in / 24 cm from foot to ear tip.
- Head width: about 3.4 in / 8.5 cm across the cheeks.
- Body height: about 4.2 in / 10.5 cm from neck to crotch.
- Hat diameter: about 4.6 in / 11.5 cm across the brim.
- Basket size: about 2.2 in / 5.5 cm wide, not including handles.
Yarn and Tools
- Yarn weight: sport weight or light DK yarn. Use firm tension so the stuffing does not show.
- Main kitten colors: black charcoal, warm white, pale cream, soft pink, light blue, dark blue, aqua blue, red, yellow, tan straw, white, leaf green, olive green, lavender, and pale purple.
- Needles: US 2 / 2.75 mm double-pointed needles for the toy and US 1 / 2.25 mm needles for small details.
- Other tools: tapestry needle, stitch markers, fiberfill, two 12 mm blue safety eyes or embroidered eyes, thin clear thread or white embroidery floss for whiskers, small gold beads or gold yarn for the necklace, and sewing pins.
Gauge
Work the kitten firmly in stockinette stitch. A good gauge is 8 stitches and 11 rounds per 1 in / 2.5 cm on US 2 needles. Exact gauge is less important than a tight fabric. If your stitches look loose, move down one needle size before beginning.

Pattern Notes
This kitten is knitted in separate pieces and sewn together for the rounded plush look shown. The head is oversized, the body is short, and the legs hang straight downward. The overalls are worked separately and fitted over the stuffed body so the garment looks like real clothing.
The black-and-white face is shaped by using color changes across the front of the head. Keep floats loose when working small areas. For an easier version, knit the head in white and duplicate-stitch the black markings after stuffing, but the written pattern below uses knitted color placement.

- Sew the arms to the sides at the shoulder line, just under the head.

Whiskers
- Cut 6 strands of fine white embroidery floss or clear thread, each about 3.5 in / 9 cm long.
- Thread one strand through the left muzzle and one through the right muzzle, creating two whiskers at the same height.
- Repeat twice more so each side has 3 whiskers.
- Add a tiny dot of fabric-safe glue inside the muzzle area only if needed.
- Trim the whiskers evenly so they extend past the cheeks but do not overpower the face.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check the kitten from the front before the last knots are hidden. The eyes should be level, the white blaze should run down the center of the face, and the pink nose should sit between the two rounded muzzle pads.
Use small tightening stitches at the inner corners of the eyes if you want a deeper expression. Pull gently from one eye corner to the other, knot inside the head, and smooth the face with your fingers.
- Brush the black head section very lightly with a clean soft toothbrush for a fuzzy kitten look.
- Do not brush the embroidered flowers, blue eye rings, or overalls.
- Make sure both ears stand upright and the pink inner ears are visible.
- Secure every accessory with matching sewing thread if the toy will be handled often.
Care Notes
This knitted kitten is best used as a display toy or gentle handmade keepsake. Because it includes small parts, beads, embroidered details, and attached accessories, it is not recommended for children under three years old.
- Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash if beads, safety eyes, or delicate embroidery are used.
- Let the toy air dry flat on a clean towel.
- Reshape the hat brim and basket while damp if needed.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The black-and-white head has a centered white blaze and white muzzle.
- The blue eyes have light blue stitched rings and dark outlines.
- The aqua overalls include floral embroidery, red buttons, red berries, and two cream pockets.
- The sandals are white with visible toes and red ladybugs.
- The straw hat has a navy band and tiny bee.
- The basket has yellow-and-white gingham checks, white handles, and fruit inside.
- The ear flowers, necklace, mushrooms, and butterfly are attached or displayed neatly.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Store the finished kitten away from strong sunlight so the black, aqua, and pink yarns do not fade. Keep the hat brim flat by storing it on top of the toy box rather than underneath heavier items.
For dust removal, use a soft dry brush and work in the direction of the knitted stitches. Avoid pulling across the embroidered flowers, whiskers, necklace, and ladybugs. If the basket loses shape, gently press the corners back into place by hand.
- Wrap the toy in acid-free tissue paper for long-term storage.
- Keep lavender sachets or cedar nearby, but do not place them directly against the yarn.
- Check sewn accessories every few months and reinforce any loose stitches.
- Never iron the face, ears, flowers, basket, or butterfly.
