This cheerful knitted Boston Terrier wears soft blue overalls, a navy-and-white sailor striped shirt, brown sandals with tiny bee decorations, and a bright red polka-dot headband tied in a bow. The finished display also includes a yellow crossbody bag with a flower button, anchor-style overall buttons, a tiny sailboat, a round red beret-style cushion, and a small basket of yarn for a cozy garden crafting scene.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written for knitters who enjoy detailed toy making. The Boston Terrier is knitted mostly in the round with small pieces sewn on afterward. The body shape is upright and plush, with a large rounded head, short muzzle, pointy ears, small arms, rounded legs, and fitted clothing layered over the toy.

The face has one black side and one white side. The black patch covers the doll’s left side of the face, continues over the left ear, and reaches down beside the left eye. The right side stays white with a pale pink blush detail. The outfit uses clean sailor colors: white, navy blue, denim blue, yellow, brown, red, and tiny cream accents.

Finished Size

  • Finished dog height: about 11 inches from feet to ear tips.
  • Head width: about 4.5 inches across the cheeks.
  • Body height: about 5 inches from neck to feet.
  • Yellow bag: about 1.75 inches wide.
  • Tiny sailboat: about 2.75 inches wide.
  • Red beret cushion: about 3.5 inches across.

Yarn and Supplies

  • Yarn weight: DK weight or light worsted yarn.
  • Main white yarn: face, muzzle, paws, legs, right ear.
  • Charcoal black yarn: left face patch and left ear.
  • Denim blue yarn: overalls.
  • Navy blue yarn: sailor stripes, shirt cuffs, shoe soles, sailboat base.
  • White yarn: shirt stripes and sailboat sail.
  • Bright red yarn: headband, bow, sailboat flag, beret cushion.
  • Yellow yarn: crossbody bag strap, bag body, bee appliques.
  • Brown yarn: sandal straps, basket, flower center.
  • Pale pink yarn or embroidery thread: blush and small eyebrow marks.
  • Small amount of tan yarn: sandal sole details and basket rim.
  • Needles: US 3 / 3.25 mm double-pointed needles or magic loop circular needle.
  • Optional smaller needles: US 2 / 2.75 mm for tight bag, bee, and bow details.
  • Safety eyes: two glossy black eyes, 10 to 12 mm.
  • Safety nose: one black oval nose, 8 to 10 mm, or embroider with black yarn.
  • Buttons: two small wooden anchor buttons for the overall bib.
  • Fiberfill: firm toy stuffing.
  • Tapestry needle: for sewing and embroidery.
  • Stitch markers: one marker for beginning of round and several spare markers.
  • Small white felt dots or white embroidery thread: for the red headband polka dots.

Gauge

Exact gauge is less important than a firm fabric. For a toy that holds its shape well, aim for about 6 stitches and 8 rounds per inch in stockinette stitch using DK yarn and US 3 needles. Your stitches should be tight enough that stuffing does not show through.

If your knitted fabric looks loose, change to smaller needles. If the toy becomes too stiff to shape smoothly, change to slightly larger needles. Keep all clothing pieces at the same gauge so they sit neatly on the body.

General Notes

  • This pattern uses stockinette stitch for the main toy, worked in the round unless otherwise stated.
  • Stuff pieces gradually as you knit. Do not overstuff the muzzle, arms, or ears.
  • Use mattress stitch for flat seams and whipstitch for small appliques.
  • When changing colors on the face patch, twist yarns neatly on the wrong side to avoid holes.
  • For a cleaner toy, weave in ends inside the pieces whenever possible.
  • The headband, bag, sandals, sailboat, beret cushion, and yarn basket are separate pieces so the scene matches the image.

Head

The head is large and round with a slightly tapered lower face. It is worked from the top down. The color split creates the Boston Terrier look: charcoal black on the doll’s left side and white on the right side. The muzzle is knitted separately and sewn on after the head is stuffed.

Head Color Plan

  • Use charcoal black for the left side patch.
  • Use white for the right side and center face.
  • From Round 1 to Round 20, keep about one third of the stitches in charcoal black on the left side.
  • From Round 21 onward, reduce the black patch gradually so the lower muzzle area remains mostly white.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Sew the legs to the lower body first. Position them close together so the dog sits upright with the feet facing forward.
  2. Pull the blue overall pants over the legs and body. Sew the waistband invisibly to the body at a few points so it does not slide.
  3. Place the striped shirt around the upper body. The stripes should be visible above the bib and on the arms.
  4. Sew the head to the neck with strong stitches. Go around the neck twice for stability.
  5. Sew the ears to the top of the head. The black ear goes on the black patch side, and the white ear goes on the white side.
  6. Sew the muzzle to the lower face. Keep it centered and rounded.
  7. Sew the arms to the sides of the body. Angle them slightly downward and outward.
  8. Attach the sailor collar around the neck, letting it rest above the overall bib.
  9. Sew the overall straps from back waist to front bib. Add the anchor buttons at the front.
  10. Wrap the red headband between the ears and sew the bow at the top center.
  11. Place the yellow bag strap from the left shoulder across the chest to the right hip. Secure the bag at the hip with hidden stitches.
  12. Sew the sandals under the feet and add the bee appliques to the upper straps.
  13. Add blush, eyebrow marks, and final mouth embroidery. Keep all details small and soft.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Keep the knitted Boston Terrier away from strong sunlight for long periods, because red, navy, and denim yarns can fade over time. Store it upright or lying flat, without heavy items pressing on the ears or bow.

If dust collects on the surface, use a soft dry brush and move gently in the direction of the stitches. For the tiny bag, bees, buttons, sailboat, and basket, clean around the edges carefully so small details stay secure.

For long-term storage, wrap the toy in clean tissue paper and place it in a breathable cotton bag. Avoid plastic bags in humid spaces, because trapped moisture can affect the yarn and stuffing.
