Knitting Tutorial: Woodland Fairy Puppy in Mushroom Sweater – Free Knitting Pattern.

This sweet woodland fairy puppy is a soft knitted doll with floppy ears, a rounded puppy face, shiny fairy wings, a mushroom colorwork sweater, short textured pants, flower-topped hair decoration, sandals, a crossbody leaf pouch, and tiny woodland accessories. The finished toy has a garden-fairy look, with warm beige fur, earthy greens, rusty mushroom tones, and delicate white wings that sit behind the shoulders.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US English knitting terms. The puppy is knitted mostly flat and seamed, which makes it friendly for newer knitters who are still building confidence with shaping, stuffing, and assembly. Small areas such as the eyes, nose, flowers, mushroom cap, acorn, and purse details use simple embroidery and small knitted pieces.

The doll is designed to match the image closely: a tan puppy with long floppy ears, large glossy eyes, a cream muzzle, a black oval nose, a woodland sweater with mushroom motifs, fairy wings, green shoulder bag, hat, small mushroom, acorn, and little flower sandals.

Finished Size

  • Finished puppy height: about 12 in / 30 cm from head top to feet.
  • Head width: about 4.25 in / 11 cm after stuffing.
  • Body height: about 5 in / 13 cm from neck to seat.
  • Wing span: about 8.5 in / 21.5 cm across the back.
  • Gauge: 24 sts and 34 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in stockinette stitch on smaller needles, after light stuffing.

  • DK weight yarn in warm tan for head, ears, legs, and hands.
  • DK weight yarn in cream for muzzle, inner paw details, and sweater background.
  • DK weight yarn in black for nose, eye pupils, and mouth embroidery.
  • DK weight yarn in brown for eye irises and acorn.

Important Construction Notes

Use a firm gauge for the puppy body so the stuffing does not show between stitches. The sweater, pants, wings, bag, and accessories may be knitted slightly looser because they sit on top of the stuffed doll. Stuff the head and body firmly, but keep the ears soft and floppy.

When changing colors for the mushroom sweater, carry unused yarn loosely across the wrong side. Do not pull the floats tight. The sweater should stay soft and slightly relaxed, like the one in the image.

The puppy is built in separate pieces. First knit the head, muzzle, ears, body, legs, and arms. Then knit the sweater body and sleeves, the pants texture, the wings, the bag, the hat, and the small woodland props. Finish with facial embroidery and careful assembly.

Cut yarn, leaving a 16 in / 40 cm tail. Thread through the remaining 10 sts and pull gently. Sew the back head seam from top to lower edge. Stuff firmly, shaping the face into a rounded oval with a slightly wider cheek area.

The cream muzzle is an oval patch placed on the lower front of the face. It should sit below the eyes and curve gently around the nose area.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 8 sts.

Black Oval Nose

The nose in the image is a soft black oval, placed at the upper center of the cream muzzle.

Large Puppy Eyes

The eyes are large, glossy, and expressive. You may use safety eyes with embroidery, or knit the full eye patches below. For a handmade look matching the image, use the knitted eye patches.

Fold each ear lengthwise with wrong sides together and sew the outer edge only if you want a thicker ear. For a softer drape, leave the ear single-layered and weave in the ends. Sew the top of each ear to the head beginning about 4 rows down from the crown and 8 sts away from the face center.

Body

The body is pear-shaped, slightly wider at the lower belly, and narrow at the neck so the sweater sits neatly over it.

  1. With tan yarn, CO 16 sts.
  2. Row 1 WS: purl all sts.
  3. Row 2 RS: kfb in each st across. 32 sts.
  4. Row 3: purl all sts.

Sew the back seam. Stuff the body firmly at the lower section and slightly lighter at the neck. Sew the top opening closed flat. Later, the head will sit directly on this closed neck edge.

  9. Rows 27-32: work in St st. 15 sts.
  10. BO all sts, leaving a long tail.

Sew each leg seam from toe to thigh. Stuff the foot firmly and the leg moderately. Flatten the top slightly and sew each leg to the lower body so the feet point forward and sit apart, like the seated puppy in the image.

Toe Embroidery

  • Using black yarn, embroider 3 short vertical toe lines on the cream front of each foot.
  • Place the center toe line first, then add one line on each side.
  • Keep the stitches soft and slightly curved so they look like puppy paw toes.

  10. BO all sts.

Sew the arm seams and stuff lightly. Embroider 2 small black paw lines on each cream paw. Attach the arms to the upper body after the sweater is placed, so the cuffs line up under the sleeves.

  4. Cut yarn and pull through remaining sts.

Sew the cap seam and attach it to the top of the brown acorn. Add a short brown stem using 3 twisted embroidery stitches.

Head and Body Joining

Place the head on the body so the muzzle faces forward and the ears hang evenly. The head should be slightly larger than the body, giving the puppy the soft toy proportions shown in the image.

  1. Pin the head to the neck area before sewing.
  2. Use tan yarn and small ladder stitches around the neck edge.
  3. Sew around the neck twice for strength.
  4. Check from the front and side to make sure the puppy sits naturally.

Attaching Arms, Legs, Wings, and Accessories

Attach the legs first so the puppy can sit. Then add the sweater, sleeves, arms, wings, and pouch. The wings should sit behind the shoulders and spread outward, not straight down.

  1. Sew the legs to the lower body, angled slightly outward.
  2. Dress the body in the sweater and sew the back sweater seam.
  3. Slide sleeves over arms and sew sleeve tops to sweater shoulder area.
  4. Sew arms to the upper sides of the body, angled downward.
  5. Sew wings to the back center, hiding the stitches behind the sweater neckline.
  6. Place the pouch strap over one shoulder and tack it at the shoulder and hip so it stays in position.
  7. Place the hat, mushroom, and acorn beside the puppy as display accessories.

Facial Embroidery

The face gives this puppy its gentle woodland expression. Take time with pinning before sewing. If the eyes are too high, the puppy may look surprised. If they are too low, the muzzle may look crowded.

  • Place eyes about 7 rows above the muzzle and about 9 sts apart.
  • Place the black nose at the top center of the cream muzzle.
  • Use black yarn for the short mouth line and two tiny smile curves.
  • Add a small white highlight to each eye to create the shiny look.
  • Use tan yarn to make two tiny shaping stitches under the cheeks if desired.

Optional Sweater Surface Embroidery

After the sweater is sewn onto the body, add small duplicate-stitch accents if you want the mushroom pattern to appear fuller. This is helpful because tiny toy sweaters can lose detail during seaming.

  • Add rusty duplicate stitches above the chest to strengthen the mushroom caps.
  • Add olive V stitches between mushrooms to suggest woodland leaves.
  • Add beige vertical stitches under rusty caps to define mushroom stems.
  • Keep all surface stitches loose so the sweater remains soft.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the puppy from all angles before weaving in the final ends. The ears should hang softly beside the head, the wings should peek out from behind the sweater, and the pouch should rest diagonally across the front. Add the flower cluster last so it stays clean and dimensional.

For the best expression, shape the muzzle gently with your fingers after sewing. A tiny amount of extra stuffing under the nose area helps create the rounded puppy face seen in the image.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if you used safety eyes, buttons, iridescent thread, or delicate embroidery.
  • Let the toy air dry flat on a towel.
  • Gently reshape the wings and ears while damp.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Head is firmly stuffed and securely sewn to the body.
  • Eyes are even and have white highlights.
  • Muzzle, nose, and mouth are centered.
  • Ears are attached at matching height on both sides.
  • Sweater motifs are visible on the chest and sleeves.
  • Wings are sewn firmly at the back center.
  • Pouch strap crosses the body neatly.
  • Sandals show cream toes and rusty straps.
  • Flower cluster is attached near one ear.
  • Mushroom, acorn, and hat are finished as matching display pieces.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished woodland fairy puppy away from direct sunlight to protect the soft tan, cream, olive, and rusty colors. If dust collects on the wings or flower details, use a clean dry brush and lift the dust gently instead of rubbing.

When storing for a long time, wrap the puppy loosely in acid-free tissue or clean cotton fabric. Do not press heavy items on top of the toy, because the ears, wings, sandals, and pouch can flatten. Refresh the shape by gently fluffing the body and smoothing the knitted fabric with your hands.
